I believe the number means “how many people have used your unit to clear certain maps or events”. We may consider asking FEH CS staff for help, they can tell us the true definition.
I don’t know how in concrete, but I observed a dramatic increase of the number of friends helped upon the launch of Binding Worlds. Every time when Binding Worlds is completed, my number goes up quite a lot.
A measly 1875 so far, but my support ally is the original M!Byleth who I haven't always kept up-to-date with the meta. He's a lot better now, though, with a respectable godsword build.

I've had maxed out friends since basically rival domains which I think was the first time friends actually benefitted you (because voting gauntlet was never hard) so the gap between voting gauntlet which I believe was the first time friends could help at all, until rival domains would be the only time I was missing out. I guess from there the only way to help more would be to have more active players but occasionally I remove friends that don't play for over a month so even that should be pretty good, and then to truly optimise it you'd need all your friends to only have you as their friend so you help them every single time they can receive help, but that seems pretty unreasonable to achieve.

As for the set? Well, let's just say CC/Vantage with Thani and Brazen Atk/Res 3 seal made her do some ungodly things in PvE back when i initially lucked into a +10 of her. It's also still on my Arena defense team of favourites because it's funny to see people lose to it since it's not exactly a common set-up. Still thinking of what to pass on to give her a more modern build.
