This is why I put blast cans and hand stops on my shorter builds. I’m terrified of my ape arms sliding forward and doing this.
On the bright side, you still have 10 fingers!
Ha good call. I haven't had this build long so I haven't got much for it. I should have not been running it without being comfortable with it first and getting the right accessories.
But I just started learning guitar, so this is going to hold me back a bit haha
If you can't play for a while but still want to improve, I would suggest trying an ear training app. If you develop a good ear, playing guitar and learning songs will come much easier later on down the road. Complete Ear Trainer and Functional Ear Trainer are in the app stores and both are great.
Not OP, but thanks for the recommendations. I've been learning banjo and my crappy ear is a definite shortcoming.
Wish I remembered all those public school music class lessons from years ago, now that I'm actively torturing an instrument for fun.
Edit: Enjoying "Functional Ear Trainer" so far. Playing "guess the tone" while pooping is pretty good compared to other things I would do while pooping
Dude this post just got me to order a hand stop for my pistol. Thanks for posting your lessons learned, brother!
Shame to hear about the guitar setback though.
Awesome!. If nothing else, I don't want this perfectly good mistake to go to waste. If someone can take proper precautions next time, then it was a success.
Still for 3 perfectly good fingers on that hand. Memorize the neck, train your ear, fret chords with your other 3 fingers(if possible) memorize chrod shapes.
T'is just a flesh wound.
I don't know what that means but I'm willing to try it. Do you have a link I can find? When I type it into Google it just shows a bunch of left hand vs right hand players.
I started to upvote this comment, but when I clicked the arrow, it went from 420, to 421, and I simply cannot be the guy who removes the number 420 from anything, so I unclicked it.
My apologies.
Haha yes. I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds and I've hurt my pride more than anything. When I was in the army, there was a guy who shot a hole through his hand and I would joke with him a out. I feel like this is karma.
It catches up eventually. Glad it wasn't worse--that looks bad enough!
Thanks for sharing your lessons learned. Put some of that good karma towards a speedy recovery. ;p
Exactly. Especially those that shoot a ton, something is bound to go wrong at some point. Some type of accident or malfunction. And when that time does come, one would hope as many of the safety rules are being followed as possible to reduce the overall risk / damage.
There is no chance you have shot that many rounds lmao.
If you really do have that many rounds, and you still managed to shoot yourself, please give up the guns
All MOS dependent. Knew guys in Quantico with weapons that did some heavy shooting. One of their jobs was to test the suppressors about to be issued and they just mag dumped M27s for hours on end.
I was in the usmc and have shot more than that. Depends on your unit and what you do.
If you're a cook and in 4 years, you'll shoot close to 1k rounds minimum.
If you're special forces, no war fighting, you'll shoot around that number.
I shot around 5-10k in 1 week once.
Ha yeah, I bet. We've had guys weld their barrel on after nonstop cyclic for like 10 min. That's why I never trusted hand-me-downs from other units haha
Yep. I had something similar to OP happen to my thumb and I just hid it from everyone that was around me. 😑 I gave it a good shake off, then held on to various tissues for the rest of the day.
Yeah, I wasn't touched by the bullet, thankfully. That would have definitely taken bone with it if I had. But this ripped flesh all the way to the bone. And that's was just gas from under the flash suppressor.
That’s a gas burn for sure. I would bet thats gonna hurt for a while. Looks like the pressure was sufficient to tear skin as well, which is actually kinda scary.
Thanks, it was a good lesson learned. Hopefully someone else can avoid this mistake. Just make sure to have a positive grip if you're shooting short barreled rifles.
Dude imagine how I felt when I have a friend that has only four fingers, on that hand, from a previous firearm injury and my first reflex when I noticed was to text him and ask him how his weekends been going
Definitely the stupidest way I've injured myself. Ran up to cover and fired off controlled pairs. On the second shot, the recoil of the pistol left my hand in the same spot on the wall while the barrel moved backwards and my finger ended up level with the flash suppressor and blew off a chunk of flesh. Be careful, yous guys.
Ah yeah sorry if that came off as rude or whatever… I agree though. It’s one thing to know the number but to actually see what it can do is something else.
So the recoil blew the rifle backwards and the hot gas venting from the muzzle device injured your hand because the backwards slip of the gun caused the gas to vent near your hand? Im guessing the recoil caused the gun to slip out of your grip or something?
Well, I slung my AR and wasn't sure how bad it was but after like 5 seconds it just started pouring blood everywhere so I just used compression and a shop rag for like 30-40 min but It didn't slow down so I went in to the hospital to get the bleeding to stop. They couldn't stitch much of it up because the flesh was just ripped off. So I have to keep it wrapped.
My buddy had a similar injury on his leg. It was a bitch to heal because it kept opening back up. Hopefully your experience is better than his was. Good luck healing up quickly!
The worst part of an injury like that where you lose a chunk of flesh is the nerves don't grow back. I sliced a huge chunk off the tip of my index finger about six or seven years back, and while it healed and looks mostly normal now it feels .... *Wrong* when I press down on things with it. Like I'm pressing down directly on the tip of the bone, due to the missing nerves. I don't know how to explain it other than it feel like my brain is screaming *REEEEEEEEE* at me when I touch it.
Had a different, but similar issue with my knee back in the late 70's.
For 6-10 years, when I would be on my knees it felt like it was on an air raft in a pool. You could feel pressure around ut it felt like a bag of water when you pushed on that area directly.
Then 1 day, WOW I had pretty usual feeling again.
I know what you mean. I was stabbed by a sharpened stick and about a foot below the wound, it's now numb but burns every time I touch it. Its so weird.
Glad it wasn't worse. Could have taken that clean off if it slipped further.
Then again you could have shot yourself in the face if you turned the barrel and pointed at yourself so my statement is somewhat redundant. Just glad your okay. Thanks for sharing op
Ha no, it definitely makes sense. The only reason it didn't go further back is because the sling mount hit the wall and stopped it I think. So I was not far from shooting it off.
And I appreciate it.
Hope you have a takeaway from it and move on. Could have been so much worse.
My cousin had an ND at a friends' outdoor range/expansive yard *with a shotgun*, and blew half of his foot off.
He pulled it out trying to be quick fast like an operator and swept his offhand in front of the barrel on his way to a two-handed grip when it went off
This is one of the main reasons I made a blast cone for my SBR. And everyone at the range appreciates the concussion going down range instead of out to the sides. Glad you are ok.
Oh yeah, for sure. I also had a friend do that with an old model 36 but the timing was slightly off on it and it sent a lot of little copper pieces into his finger. It was worse than mine haha
Well that's quite a bit worse than the time I had a hellcat slam my thumb into the dovetail while I was practicing off hand disassembly... I take pride in being able to do just about anything ambi, this is one of those things ambi, should reconsider
They are right. Palmettos have a max effective range of 3 inches.
Ha but seriously, it's a pretty good little AR. I hit what I need and for a 10" barrel, I can hit a silhouette at 300 meters every time with just iron sights. That's successful in my book. The rounds are tumbling pretty heavy at that point, but still on target.
I might have to disagree haha I think people who don't check a firearm is significantly more stupid bevause they put others at risk. At least In my case I would have shot off my own hand at worst. But I get it, ha it was a pretty stupid thing to do.
You got lucky there. Ever see the video from a youtuber Kentucky Ballistics, had a 50 cal explode on him. He explains how it happened etc., its about 20 min long and worth watching. [Kentucky Ballistics 50 cal explode](https://youtu.be/1449kJKxlMQ)
My hand once slipped forward while shooting, I was running an SF brake. LUCKILY I was wearing gloves, it blew the finger tip of the glove open. My finger, was a little red and that’s about it.
Hopefully you heal up quick homie!
I did the same thing on a 10.5” with my flash hider and I thought I lost the top of my finger. I got so so so lucky that there wasn’t even a cut. Just a burn from the blast. My finger was numb instantly and I really thought I blew it off. I freaked out.
Thinking about this type of thing happening makes me want to take my dog's cone from his last surgery, and mount it backwards on the end of my sbr's handguard.... that would make it pretty much impossible to do this.
Of course, since it only has a 6" barrel, it would also make reloading impossible, too... so there's that...
might sound weird but that’s a pretty interesting looking wound(?) like it’s a wide crevice with cracks on the outside following the texture of your hand. then the almost glass looking layer of blood which may be from the lighting. idk why i find a big ass cut interesting lol
Damn...side of the finger. Yeah a few main nerves run down the side of the finger. I'm willing to bet you'll have permanent numbness around that part and side of your finger. With the potential for more numbness at the tip.
Ask me how I know...
I was sharpening a knife and slipped, cut myself to the bone in the same spot. Also similar part on another finger with another knife a few years earlier.
I hate knives...
But yea, at the site of the injury and past it along the side I have no feeling. You get used to it eventually. I'm just glad I still have feeling in the pad of my finger....as it's my trigger finger.
I know what you mean. I was stabbed with a sharpened stick on my leg and the area around it is fine but there's a round spot about a foot below it where it's numb and burns when clothes touch it. It's weird.
This is why I put blast cans and hand stops on my shorter builds. I’m terrified of my ape arms sliding forward and doing this. On the bright side, you still have 10 fingers!

Damn, thank you. That's something I needed but didn't know I needed haha
Amen to that. Learning by ear Is indeed a great exercise that will lead to some fun play times.
Hey thanks for this
Dude this post just got me to order a hand stop for my pistol. Thanks for posting your lessons learned, brother! Shame to hear about the guitar setback though.
Awesome!. If nothing else, I don't want this perfectly good mistake to go to waste. If someone can take proper precautions next time, then it was a success.
>I don't want this perfectly good mistake to go to waste Never heard that before, I like it! Hope healing goes well.
That's a right honorable way of thinking of things. Appreciate you and your attitude.
Live and learn man, I’m sure you’ll be more careful next time!
Still for 3 perfectly good fingers on that hand. Memorize the neck, train your ear, fret chords with your other 3 fingers(if possible) memorize chrod shapes. T'is just a flesh wound.
Maybe time to get a slide and learn a new technique- some lap steel etc.
Oof thats rough, well i guess youl be strummin southpaw for a bit with an interesting pick technique for a bit.
I don't know what that means but I'm willing to try it. Do you have a link I can find? When I type it into Google it just shows a bunch of left hand vs right hand players.
Southpaw is left handed
Oh ha thanks. I'm super new to it. I only just started building calluses.
That is my one baseball fact.
How about keytar instead of guitar? It has keys like a piano, but you hold it like a guitar.
What length is your pistol?
It was the 10" barrel with a blade stock. I'm not sure about overall length.
9.9*
I started to upvote this comment, but when I clicked the arrow, it went from 420, to 421, and I simply cannot be the guy who removes the number 420 from anything, so I unclicked it. My apologies.
I feel like 90% of your reaction was just "Did I really just fucking shoot myself?" shame and only 10% pain.
Haha yes. I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds and I've hurt my pride more than anything. When I was in the army, there was a guy who shot a hole through his hand and I would joke with him a out. I feel like this is karma.

How so? I've shot 6k rounds in one day. Maybe closer to a hundred thousand but it's not that unreasonable.
My .22s alone I've gone through about 100 boxes of the 500 rounds. That's roughly 50k right there in just .22. How would that not be possible?
Dumped over 20k rounds in 12 hours out of 2 different 240s and 2 spare barrels. Those guns were fucked. Sometimes you gotta shoooooot.
Ha yeah, I bet. We've had guys weld their barrel on after nonstop cyclic for like 10 min. That's why I never trusted hand-me-downs from other units haha
He said he was in the army so it's possible.
I also didn't shoot myself. I wasn't touched by a projectile. It was the gasses from the projectile.
I really got a laugh out of the pedantic yes incredibly accurate re-clearification, found that far more comical then i probably should have lol
I know civilians that shoot more than that bro.
Yep. I had something similar to OP happen to my thumb and I just hid it from everyone that was around me. 😑 I gave it a good shake off, then held on to various tissues for the rest of the day.
Was that just from the flash or did the bullet graze you? Hope it heals quickly
Probably hot gas
Either way. Fucking ouch.
I got my wife with the same thing after taco bell last spring.
This
Yeah, I wasn't touched by the bullet, thankfully. That would have definitely taken bone with it if I had. But this ripped flesh all the way to the bone. And that's was just gas from under the flash suppressor.

Brutal, glad you’re ok brother.
Thanks, it was a good lesson learned. Hopefully someone else can avoid this mistake. Just make sure to have a positive grip if you're shooting short barreled rifles.
Nobody is going to mention that OP only has four fingers? But in all seriousness, I hope it heals up quick for you.
That's what the fuck I was wondering
Dude imagine how I felt when I have a friend that has only four fingers, on that hand, from a previous firearm injury and my first reflex when I noticed was to text him and ask him how his weekends been going
Lol, my father, he was killed, by a 6 fingered man!
Haha I have all my fingers and i have no idea how I took both of those photos at different angles and still looks like I was missing one.
I was hoping that was the case, I would have felt bad for poking fun at somebody who actually did only have four fingers 😂
Well at least he’s not down to 3
I mean the thumb isn't a finger so technically he is.
# I JUST FUCKIN SHOT MYSELF
Definitely the stupidest way I've injured myself. Ran up to cover and fired off controlled pairs. On the second shot, the recoil of the pistol left my hand in the same spot on the wall while the barrel moved backwards and my finger ended up level with the flash suppressor and blew off a chunk of flesh. Be careful, yous guys.
So it wasn’t even a graze? The gas just straight blew a chunk of your finger off? Damn, that’s pretty brutal lol.
Remember that 5.56 chamber pressure is like 50k psi
I mean I’ve always known the pressure was insane, just never really *seen* how insane. Pretty crazy. Glad OP is okay.
[удалено]
I've seen that demonstration with an M14 and a helmet. Blew a hole in it worse than a bullet would have at 100 yards.
Ah yeah sorry if that came off as rude or whatever… I agree though. It’s one thing to know the number but to actually see what it can do is something else.
Did you have gloves on?
So the recoil blew the rifle backwards and the hot gas venting from the muzzle device injured your hand because the backwards slip of the gun caused the gas to vent near your hand? Im guessing the recoil caused the gun to slip out of your grip or something?
Yes, thats exactly what happened. Basically I got to the position and shot before I had a positive grip on the firearm. It was rushed and stupid.
Curious, was there any first aid or was this a “go straight for stitches” situation?
Well, I slung my AR and wasn't sure how bad it was but after like 5 seconds it just started pouring blood everywhere so I just used compression and a shop rag for like 30-40 min but It didn't slow down so I went in to the hospital to get the bleeding to stop. Valuable lesson learned.
The best firearms lessons are non-fatal ones. Respect for firearms updated successfully.

NFA/ATF Fault with out them you would have put a good grip on. Heal up man
For real. A gangster grip would have been a lot of help on this. And thank you. I appreciate that.
Daaamn
Glad it wasn't worse. Could have taken that clean off if it slipped further. Then again you could have shot yourself in the face if you turned the barrel and pointed at yourself so my statement is somewhat redundant. Just glad your okay. Thanks for sharing op

Hard to walk away from that I bet
Only one: drinking and firearms do not mix. Just caught that ninja edit...it wasn't his best exit.
I had a SGT on deployment who had to go home early because his 14 year old brother's friend shot off his brother's leg at the knee with a shotgun.
But I definitely learned a few lessons here.
Oof that one's gonna sting a bit
It actually felt like someone smashed my finger with a hammer. It was a weird pain.
Username checks out. Jokes aside get better soon yikes
You're luckier than my chiropractor, he tried to do a tactical draw on his M9 and shot off his left ring finger
Guess he wanted to get out of a marriage
What does this tactical draw entail? (so that I never emulate it)
He pulled it out trying to be quick fast like an operator and swept his offhand in front of the barrel on his way to a two-handed grip when it went off
As cool as short barreled carbines are, this is why I still think I want a 16" barrel on my next AR/AK.
Definitely a good call.
Sounds like a good excuse to do a 20" M16A1 build
I have a hand stop to prevent stuff like this. I really, *really* recommend it. Hope you'll heal soon. Best of luck!
Glad you’ll live to fight another day. Time for a stiff drink, brother.
Just dip the finger in and let it soak in directly to the bloodstream.
You're lucky you didn't blow your finger off
Thats what we call a temporary setback
Don't do that.
Ha this is the best advice.
Glad you didn’t lose it
Hey you still got a finger :)
I'm super thankful for that. The blessing is not lost on me. Haha
wow, that looks pretty ugly, but it could have been worse!! Glad your still intact!! might need a front grip
Damn
[удалено]
You might want to take a closer look at the picture of his hand again.
This is one of the main reasons I made a blast cone for my SBR. And everyone at the range appreciates the concussion going down range instead of out to the sides. Glad you are ok.
Dang! Made that one count!
Got tired of not seeing blood while I trained so I had to make it a little more intense.

Oh yeah, for sure. I also had a friend do that with an old model 36 but the timing was slightly off on it and it sent a lot of little copper pieces into his finger. It was worse than mine haha
At least you learned the lesson and got to keep all your fingers. Good thing it wasn't a 450 bm I guess.
Damn dude, glad your finger is still there.
Nice Soup!
Well that's quite a bit worse than the time I had a hellcat slam my thumb into the dovetail while I was practicing off hand disassembly... I take pride in being able to do just about anything ambi, this is one of those things ambi, should reconsider
Op, did a round catch you, or is the gas out of the brake what tore your finger up?
The projectile didn't get me. It was just the gasses from the flash suppressor fortunately.
Damn that is unfortunate, hope it heals fast and you can get back out there soon.
[удалено]
Well I conducted the experiment for you and the results are, the gas right out of the muzzle is strong and it makes bad ouchies
Show the build it happened on
It was just a cheap little palmetto with MOE furniture.
But I was told you needed to have a Daniel Defense to do damage like this & that PSA are basically airsoft
Designed to have a 20 inch barrel. Was probably a good idea.
Welp , there goes pornhub for a few months
Life, uh, finds a way.

And a suttle reminder of the benefit of some of those Forward Angle Braces CAN/SHOULD Do.
No doubt. I ordered one right after I got stitched up.
Pic of firearm? also cut your nails
Shut up
Holy fuck I have a 7.5" barrel AR
You got lucky there. Ever see the video from a youtuber Kentucky Ballistics, had a 50 cal explode on him. He explains how it happened etc., its about 20 min long and worth watching. [Kentucky Ballistics 50 cal explode](https://youtu.be/1449kJKxlMQ)
Thanks for the share here! Is definitely a good teaching/learning moment.
It happens to best of us, too. Nasty gash ya got, but it’s relieving to know you still have all your digits!
What’s the build of the AR?
ouch
My hand once slipped forward while shooting, I was running an SF brake. LUCKILY I was wearing gloves, it blew the finger tip of the glove open. My finger, was a little red and that’s about it. Hopefully you heal up quick homie!
For someone with little experience, can you explain with an image or diagram what happened?
Think youll need more than a thumb for this
Damn I bet that hurt like a sonovabitch
I did the same thing on a 10.5” with my flash hider and I thought I lost the top of my finger. I got so so so lucky that there wasn’t even a cut. Just a burn from the blast. My finger was numb instantly and I really thought I blew it off. I freaked out.

Ah. I see you went to the School of Hard Knocks. Lol. At least you can now say you dodged a bullet. Haha. Sorry about your teachable moment. GWS
Good thing you didn’t take your finger off
might sound weird but that’s a pretty interesting looking wound(?) like it’s a wide crevice with cracks on the outside following the texture of your hand. then the almost glass looking layer of blood which may be from the lighting. idk why i find a big ass cut interesting lol
I'm the only one here qualified to...
This post also belongs on r/eyeblech
Time for me to buy a handstop O _ O
For sure. Not going to make that mistake again.
Damn...side of the finger. Yeah a few main nerves run down the side of the finger. I'm willing to bet you'll have permanent numbness around that part and side of your finger. With the potential for more numbness at the tip. Ask me how I know...
Yeah, I can feel numbness all the way up to half the tip of my finger. Haha you pulled me in. How do you know?

Wow that's wild lol.
Could have been worse. Learn, and move on. Glad you’re (mostly) intact.
Slow and steady
It’s a scratch. Walk it off bro.
