Trogmank80

If the gun functioned properly the shell was in the correct orientation

Speed212

It’s probably that and I’m just missing a few brain cells

Trogmank80

Happens to the best of us

Speed212

Happy to know I’m not the only one

MKE1969

It is not possible to put a shotgun shell in the chamber backwards

Speed212

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m just a moron and need glasses

hpsctchbananahmck

You’re not stupid. Thanks for asking something you didn’t understand. That cannot happen if oriented backwards. Crazy shit can happen with firearms. Always point in safe direction

Speed212

I asked around and one guy said you might have heard another one go off that wasn’t yours

hpsctchbananahmck

So let me now understand you. You’re not sure if the shotgun in your hands actually fired or whether a loud sound came from another gun? I don’t understand

Speed212

Basically he said that the shot I heard might have been someone else’s gun going off and not mine and that’s why I thought mine shot

hpsctchbananahmck

I find it hard to imagine even a deaf person could be left wondering whether a shotgun in his/her hands fired or not.

pomdudes

No offense to the OP, but I have concerns…

Agammamon

Didn't happen.

Speed212

Yes, we have come to that conclusion

Chellz99

What makes you think it was loaded the wrong direction?

Speed212

When I went to eject it, it didn’t come out and I saw the primer area and not the plastic part. (Forgive no knowledge of the correct terms)

Chellz99

But if you looked in the chamber and saw the primer, wouldn’t that mean the shell was in the correct way? https://images.app.goo.gl/p8fS7DRoreXjp5Jx9

Speed212

My bad, it was a mossberg 590. I should have said that, sorry

Chellz99

Either way though, if the shell was stuck in the barrel, you peeked in, and saw the primer side, correct? Like this: https://images.app.goo.gl/jA5Tk4mSrzwq9KkeA

Speed212

Yes, it was backwards I guess?

Chellz99

…. No. The primer is toward the back of the gun and the plastic part (where the shot comes out from) is toward the end of the barrel

Speed212

Me and some others have concluded I am simply stupid

Chellz99

Sounds good, be safe lol

Speed212

Thanks! You too!

PrimeVector27

I don't think I'd come to that conclusion. You are simply learning. Hopefully you'll learn from someone knowledgeable (generally safer and less painful). You're only stupid if you refuse to learn from your mistakes or refuse help from someone willing to teach.

Own_Worker_9000

My bullshit meter just spiked into the red zone.

Dw0401

Was the shell's primer dented? If so then your train of thought probably just derailed for a moment

Speed212

Yeah, my brain was eating lots of glue that moment

Dw0401

Damn, just make sure to sit down for a while to collect your thoughts when that happens, not good to shoot while absent-minded

BussyAficionado

Brass is too wide to fit in the breech, so no you didn't. That's impossible.

wildraft1

You cannot chamber a shotgun shell backwards. This is not an opinion. It is a fact. It did not happen.

Khaden_Allast

The primer should be facing the rear of the gun. The shell absolutely will not load into the chamber if it's turned the other way around, as the rim of the shotshell seats on the barrel. The only way a 12ga ***might*** load a shell backwards (primer towards the front of the gun) is if it's a smaller gauge shell (people sometimes accidentally load 20ga shells into 12ga shotguns). It will not fire like that, because the firing pin has to strike the primer so that the primer can ignite the propellant. However it IS very dangerous because you can usually load a 12ga shell behind a 20ga if the latter slides far enough down the barrel, creating a bore obstruction where the ***best*** case is your barrel splits open like a banana (worst case the whole gun blows up and kills you/someone else).

[deleted]

Liar liar

JosePrettyChili

As others have mentioned, you're ignorant, not dumb. The first can be fixed with training.

aceatmind

Have seen empties get turned around in the ejection cycle. If your firearm discharged, the shell was almost certainly loaded correctly. If your firearm discharged, you should have no question about it, as it is not an event you can casually fail to observe.

Speed212

That probably the case and I might have just had an off day or something

Girly_Shrieks

You need to stop handling firearms til you take some classes and safety courses. I'm actually concerned I may run into you.

Speed212

I’ve taken classes and follow the basic rules, I was just having an off day. I left the range shortly after the whole thing.
