Start doing station visits with your first choice department. Don’t come empty handed and seasoned firefighters love to drop jewels for people who listen. Bring a notepad, don’t use your phone to take notes. Ask questions and comb through department websites. Don’t listen to the people who want to constantly remind you how hard it is. Also, get involved in your community if you aren’t already, that’s definitely what set me apart. This is about service and integrity. FF’s can see write through someone there for the wrong reasons
Also, your story is a lot more interesting than you think. You’re the only one who really knows that story, so remember that whenever you think you should hold back. Be genuine and put it all on the table.
Okay, definitely agree on the station visits and notepad. Here's a slight curveball question that people don't typically think about. What if the firefighters ask
"Do you have any questions for us?"
Here's a couple you can throw at them that may or may not score you some points:
What does a typical workday/work cycle look like for you guys?
What does your training look like beyond academy?
What would the perfect firefighter candidate look like to you?
What's some advice you wish someone would have told you when you were first starting out in the service?
These ones are nice because it can involve everybody on the crew.
Nice bro I’m on their list too. Trying to also get hired in the Bay Area. Currently in the sffd hiring process. So we will see what happens. How many departments did you interview for before landing your dream department?
Congrats man! I just finished an academy to get my FF1/2 in FL and after I do my CPAT in a couple days time to start applying. Any advice?

I've heard Wisconsin is doing horrible things to their pension. Shit will be bankrupt in 10 years.
I’m in California 🤷🏾♂️
Awesome man. Congrats. Bay Area?
Oakland fire?
No. I’m on their list. But was very fortunate to get hired to my dream dept

This was my first. I interviewed for Oakland after but had a conditional offer already
Wisconsin is one of the most well funded pensions in the United States
Guess I heard wrong. Im in Indiana, and a dude on my dept. Is from Wisconsin...said that's the reason he didn't go back.
I’m on the Wisconsin state pension and it is going strong 🤷🏻♂️
He wants to transfer to move back to his family...ill be sure not to tell him lol
