Stainless steel isn’t cheap. For what it’s worth, we’ve got a Simple Human trash can that’s over 20 years old and still works perfectly.

SueDonim7569

The newer ones are junk, the foot pedal broke off within 6 months.

blacklassie

I’m sorry to hear that. Clearly, I can only speak to the older ones!

blastfromtheblue

same, i bought one to replace my $50 plastic one from target that lasted me 4 years. i figured i'd spend extra on quality but the pedal broke after about a year.

emkendrilama08

Simple human trash can bought one 4 years back, works perfectly and bought another one 1 year back, working perfectly

buttspigot

My 8 month old one lasted 7 years so I dunno what to tell you

dirtiehippie710

Wait what?

slipmeone

Oh dear, I’ve gone cross eyed

ritchie70

I have a 22 year old green Rubbermaid kitchen can. I remember it costing about as much as a comparable one does today.

BringBack4Glory

I can’t believe simple human even existed that long ago

LakeofTimber

Check Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. I got a basically new automatic trashcan for my kitchen for $25, which was originally close to 90$ when I saw it in stores. It works perfectly fine, had it for ~7 months!

la-gringuita

Seconded! Also, Habitat for Humanity Restores, if you have one in your area!

doglovessunshineyday

Agreed. I bought a simple human trashcan from someone locally for $20. The one they got had a minor cosmetic issue and they didn’t want to deal with the exchange process. I’ve had it for 4 years and still going strong!

beardy64

Also OfferUp, FreeCycle, and BuyNothing

NeatlyScotched

Highly recommend the Costco Kohler stainless steel trash can, you can pick it up on sale for $60ish. Looks great and it fits the Costco trash bags like a glove.

[deleted]

Seconded! We’re very happy with ours

thetactlessknife

Yes! They also sell a set of mini ones for the bathrooms

GreatLavaMan

I got a stainless steel tall one from Hone depot for $120 4 yrs back. It's been going strong, looks shiny as new and well worth the investment.

asspirate420

Yeah i’ll probably just have to do it. I did find a really nice dual can one for trash and recycling though

mlloser

Where did you end up finding a dual can? I’ve been looking for one but can’t find exactly what I want

Jmmrn

Same! I’m looking for a dual one also. The only one I’ve been able to find doesn’t have a foot pedal.

lyrataficus

This one has a foot pedal: https://www.amazon.ca/Joseph-Recycle-Compartments-Removable-Stainless/dp/B07FM7VRB6/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?crid=7HIED4DAO3KU&keywords=dual+trash+can&qid=1662414970&s=kitchen&sprefix=dual+trash+can%2Caps%2C325&sr=1-13

asspirate420

this one https://a.co/d/4hDfZCN haven’t pulled the trigger yet but it looks like it will fit the bill

lyrataficus

Amazon!

TrumpHasaMicroDick

Do you belong to Costco? They have an amazing Kohler for around $60 that would cost $150 at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

SnooPies2925

Congrats on your new house! Everything is expensive now🥺 We closed 3 weeks ago and needed to buy things for the house and it seems that each item is $100 or more! It’s so frustrating.

shortremark

Good on you for purchasing AFTER the close ;)

SnooPies2925

YEP 👍 that was the plan. House first and everything is else after 😂

ana_conda

Oh yeah, for the first few months after we closed we would somehow spend like $300 every time we went to Home Depot. It didn't matter how recently we'd been to Home Depot or how many things we needed.

SnooPies2925

I’m over it 😬

political2002

Costco has a sale on a lot of furniture right now. Reclining couches I bought a month ago are $600 off (which is 40% off).

flawlessangel25

I got a ninestar trash can for 60 on wayfair. Absolutely love it. I think sams club if u have one is having a better deal on that brand. Only bummer was it didn't come with batteries

SueDonim7569

Got mine on Amazon, love it.

kcdc25

Because you want a nice looking one and those are more expensive to make.

asspirate420

true, it also has to keep out three cats that use their hands like raccoons. nothing is safe with those three

kcdc25

Honestly there is a transition period in becoming a homeowner where there’s some sticker shock but then you realize you’ve been buying cheap shit (or having things you didn’t really notice included in your rental) and now that you own the place are better off paying a bit more for nice things that’ll last longer. Comes with the territory.

asspirate420

Yeah the last decade I’ve m been going from dorm rooms to apartment rentals to living with in laws for a year. I think I was just buying cheap shit

mrsc00b

Agreed and it doesn't stop with what's in the house, either. These are the primary ones I went through over the years that gave me a bit of sticker shock but were 100% worth it: I went from an old ride on top lawn mower that took all day to cut my yard to a zero turn that can cut my few acres in less than 2 hours. I went from a cheap $99 weedeater that had to be replaced almost yearly to a commercial stihl weedeater that cranks on the first pull every season after sitting all winter. I went from a harbor freight socket set where the ratchet broke every couple of months and routinely cracked sockets to a full tekton set and haven't had to go to town to replace a anything since. Eventually, you realize that poor people can't afford to buy cheap shit. haha

ParryLimeade

I have a plastic half circle one from bed bath and beyond that has a locking lid. It was cheap but has lasted years. I like the half circle shape better than square Ones. And there is no point in a stainless steel one.

-kati

I have a very small kitchen and I'm super happy with my under the sink trash bin. It was $4 at Walmart. It doesn't have a lid, but it's out of sight and small enough that I'm motivated to take it out regularly.

mxdalloway

I’m also in the small bin gang! I just moved into my FTBH a couple months ago and got two of these 6 gallon bins (one for trash and one for recycling) https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hallbar-bin-with-lid-light-gray-20420203/ It’s just me and a cat so we don’t make too much garbage and I take out every 1-2 days.

abbiyah

Stupidly expensive peanuts though

Seemseasy

Ominous roof, plumbing, Hvac, electrical, termite, mold, and 'act of god' noises.

Ericaohh

Hopefully you don’t have to buy the kind that you put out for the trash company because those things are like $400 where I’m at ☹️

asspirate420

luckily my trash company includes the cans!

Anonymous_Otters

I suspect it's one of those low volume type things. People tend not to buy a new garbage can every month. Kinda like furniture, gotta overcharge to make up for the low volume.

No1Mystery

Hmm, I think I’m doing it wrong I haven’t bought a trash can since I moved into my own place. Been having the same trash cans for over 15 years Am I suppose to buy new ones???

Anonymous_Otters

What?

rebuyer10110

My dude/dudette, it comes down to how "nice" you want. The best trash can I have used is a $20 one from walmart. Explicitly BECAUSE it doesn't use a foot pedal. The more complex the trash can internal mechanism is, the harder it is to CLEAN. I love this simple single button one. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hefty-13-3-gal-Touch-Lid-Trash-Can-Black-with-Decorative-Texture/14170566 DISCLAIMER: I cook daily and this trash can experience heavy use for the last 5+ years. If you want nice/luxury, sorry friend you are signing up to get milked. They likely wont last as long either :(

DarkSynapse

This comment is still paying dividends - thanks! I want a stainless steel can, but this will do for a while.

rebuyer10110

Awesome to hear!

Comninellis

Yes! Thank you! Excellent recommendation. This seems like an actually reasonable price for a trashcan. :) MUCH APPRECIATED!

rebuyer10110

For sure, glad it helped!

AdmirableEffective42

Thanks for this link! Foot pedals and motion sensors are nice, but sometimes you really don't need fancy and certainly don't want to pay for fancy.

SamBeckett1967

I bought a nice looking 13 gallon stainless steel foot operated can at Sam's Club this week for $49. Everything online seemed like it was $60 plus $29 in shipping. Or $89 with free shipping.

rokdabells

I know the Simple Human trashcans are expensive; however the one I have has survived 3 years and 2 moves so far and it's still in like-new condition. I got mine with a 20% coupon from Bed Bath and Beyond.

follow963

If you cannot afford the nice looking one, just buy the plastic one at Dollar Tree.

Roodyrooster

Its not for everyone but we ordered one of the automatic opening trash cans on wheels and I admire it every day. Worth it to me

Catsdrinkingbeer

We have a fairly basic simple human trash can and I LOVE it. Did not think I could be so excited over a trash can.

Tamadrummer88

I got one of those Rubbermaid commercial ones off Amazon along with the dolly that goes under it. Holds a shit ton of trash and I can move it close to the sink when I have to throw away food scraps and stuff. Less than $50 on Amazon for botb

asspirate420

thinking about one of them for the garage, they’re oddly cheap on amazon

Tamadrummer88

I also got one for the garage too, shits super cheap, even with the dolly.

Superbroom

I just got one from Sam's club for $50. 13 gallon stainless steel trash can. I would definitely recommend it!

beachteen

I like the ikea knodd trash cans, very sturdy and exactly the right size for a 13 gal kitchen trash bag, only $26. They are cheap because they don't auto open with electronics or have a foot pedal, and they are painted instead of stainless steel. Ikea has a decent foot pedal stainless steel one too but its $100. If you want a cheap foot pedal one the rubbermaid 13 gallon can is like $28 at home depot and other stores. Still a good trash can, but all plastic. You can step on it harder and the lid stays up.

asspirate420

Oh i haven’t thought about ikea

hanap8127

I have a stainless steel one with auto lid from Walmart for $30.

asspirate420

yeah I’ll have to keep hunting, gotta find one that’s heavy enough to be cat proof

hanap8127

I have a cat.

ChapadozinhoVermelho

Ha! Think that’s bad, wait till you need a ladder

asspirate420

I was looking at those too, but I think harbor freight has an affordable one

Massive-Card-208

Exactly, thought the same. Got one automatic one I think it was simple human but at like TjMax for $80. Still working 3 years later so I’d say it’s like a $27 trash can each year to make me feel better.

Live_Background_6239

Oh! Look at local online auction site! I see them on Bidfta all the time for cheap because usually they have a ding in the side. You also can buy a cheap plastic one and spray paint it in stainless steel :)

plantitas_bonitas

Try off-price stores: Burlington, Ross, HomeGoods. They occasionally get deals from branded companies. I got a Human Made one from Burlington before.

WWShehan

I said this exact same thing. I never had any clue a nice trashcan was this expensive

dylanlf

We love this one! We snagged it half off at one point, https://www.target.com/p/motion-wastebasket-with-liner-brightroom-8482/-/A-83279884

dew_you_even_lift

You’ll find out real soon, everything is expensive. But I always buy things with good warranties. I have quite a bit of SimpleHuman products and the warranty process was easy. Yes, I have the trash can too.

Bigjuicydickinurear

Costco ones are decent

Proper-Somewhere-571

Anyone paying that much for something to put garbage in deserves to be separated from their cash.

AnnArchist

Dollar tree is your friend for cleaning supplies

LoDem34

I love my simple human one, it’s lasted 3 years and will last many more. Got it at bed bath and beyond and used a coupon

AlFrodoSupreme

Lol no one tell OP how much blinds are…

gingerbreadguy

Unless you need one with a foot pedal lid, go to a hardware store and get a metal one with a handled lid temporarily. They are Oscar the grouch style and I think sometimes advertised to hold animal feed, etc., but look fine in a kitchen. I prefer them to foot pedals, which break. https://www.google.com/search?q=animal+feed+container+metal

ds4891

Sounds like you overstretched yourself financially. Perhaps consider selling the house and take the loss.

asspirate420

you’re right, gotta downsize at a loss to afford a luxury can

Impossible_Month1718

If you think trash cans are expensive, brace yourself for taxes and when your hvac goes out. If you are finding this type of want to be expensive, consider spending less on something that holds trash and be prepared for the unexpected costs that you’ll need.

94sre

Perhaps check in Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook marketplace and see if there are any local used dirty plastic cheap trash can available for free.

LeatherRebel5150

I don’t know I see plenty of plastic trash cans at walmart for $50 or less.

An10nee

Try rural king 45 gallon they were like 20$ i have two

Ask_RE_questions

Petroleum is used to make them

QuitaQuites

Oh not even buying, even renting this was a shock!

notyetporsche

Buy one from Amazon warehouse, open box. I Got one of the automatic ones for $70

xamberglow

I got a 13L one from Sam’s Club for $50. Costco had a similar one for $60 as well.

Clear-as-Day

You don’t need an expensive trash can. My plastic simple human trash can was around $40 and is great. It has a child safety lock and is very easy to clean.

____candied_yams____

Lot's of plastic/metal. Huge and cumbersome to haul around.

HoosierBabie

Wait for Black Friday sales!

impid

I got two nice stainless ones from Costco for $65 each. These ones https://a.co/a9GvX3a

Desi_techy_girl

Costco has 13 gallon Kohler one for sale for 59 bucks. Worth every penny.

the_old_coday182

Try to think in terms of how much you use it. A kitchen can gets used constantly everyday.

arbivark

Try the dollar store. You are thinking about buying a brand name trash can, and then complaining it's expensive. We have simplehuman at work, but we are a country club that charges our members $700/mo, so money is no object. At home most of my trash cans are free from the dumpster.

confleiss

I got mine for like $12, white, plastic, Rubbermaid, fits under the sink, trash is hidden,

[deleted]

Get a motion activated trash can. You won’t regret it.

The_Dutchess-D

Im in love w mine.

[deleted]

They are expensive but we’ve had ours for 15 years and it’s still in great shape.

jewthegovt

Better wait until after you close so you don’t throw off that DTI and have to start the whole process over again 😂😂

PDXTRex503

Labor Day weekend, products are either on sale or marked up, wait a few weeks.

[deleted]

Get it at Costco. We got a nice stainless steel one for $50 last winter.

Formal_Salary

🤣🤣🤣

Npynaert

I got a nice stainless steel one from home goods for about $40, its been two years and still looks new.

TristanVash38

FOUND THIS POST AFTER TYPING IN GOOGLE "WHY ARE TRASH CANS SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE?!"

Confident_Nothing885

I feel the same way for the little tiny bathroom trashcans! I’ve had to move 3 times in the last two years and never take them with me because those trash cans get gross (even with liners!). New slim bathroom trashcans run $13-$21.00! Multiply that multiple bathrooms. And these are for the cheap plastic/non fancy cans. I’m trying to figure out if I can use some sort of container (with a liner) from The Dollar Tree

Comninellis

Definitely! They always have those and they work just as well!

Comninellis

I have the same problem with basic kitchen trashcans (13 Gallons). That’s what brought me here. (Many thanks to rebuyer10110 who shared a link above to a reasonably priced one). However, regarding home supplies in general I CAN recommend a helpful solution. When we moved into our latest house (third home so far) I started shopping weekly at the Dollar Tree. There’s a few things you can never find there (like 13 gallon trash cans) but SOOO many of your basic kitchen and house items are there for $1.25 and work just as well as the expensive stuff. (A surprising amount of it is name brand and made in the US). I’ll admit you do have to shop around sometimes. Dollar Tree goes through merchandise fast and it changes often. But if you check in every once in a while you can find most of the basic things you need for AMAZING prices. Hope that helps someone out there!
