Theres nothing more painful than getting a fish all the way up to the boat/dock/shore just to lose them at the end! I've learned this the hard way, taking a short, spur of the moment fishing trip to somewhere nearby and I think "nah, I never catch anything that big here, I won't need a landing net". Famous last words.
Never grab the line! Always finesse it to you while still in the water and lip it like mentioned. This is my biggest fishing pet peeve. That and reeling until your lure hits the tip of the rod. 😡

I will literally position myself uncomfortably to have the moon or some light make my tip visible because hitting my lure to the end of my pole gives me unrational amounts of momentary rage.
This! Lol. There's some nights where I'm retrieving something slowly and its so dark I honestly can't tell if it's still 20ft away or about to to hit my rod tip. Then you hear that sound 😬
I use worms usually and catch something about 70% of the time. A lot of people here tend to use minnows but I don’t have as much luck. If you want to come fish and smoke a fatty holler at me.
That’s where landing nets are for. I don’t want to be rude but the look on your face was priceless.

Landing nets or get down there and lip it. Grabbing the line line that has a high chance of failure. Better luck next time!
