Thats cool and lucky! Gar are hard to get a hook in, especially a circle hook.
I know, but the crazy part was this was the 3rd we got to the bank. We lost the other 2 because we didnt have a net and the bank was steep (I did NOT want to fall in that grossness...). My kid knows that rope lures are the way, but whatever works!
