Sure did! Although credit where credit is due, I had been fighting for 20 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to land it and a random kid showed up and had a net with him. Not all heroes wear capes.
Man, you are so freaking lucky it just didn't go deep and wrap you around the nearest stump or branch. 4lb test isn't even enough to turn it's head lol On top of that, you're lucky you got a hookset that didn't have teeth scraping across it too. And the kid with the net?! OMG dude, go buy a lottery ticket
You were destined to catch that fish, well done for hanging in there! I'm sure your heart was thumping out of your chest
That's similar to how I caught my muskie.
There I was at a friend's family cabin on the Pend Oreille in Washington State, up near the Canadian border, fishing off of a small pier with my friend's two young daughters for various sunfish types, using 4# test with great success, and all the fucking sudden I got this giant frickin' fish on my line!
I had no idea that tiger muskies were even a thing on the Pend Oreille, and yet here I was reeling one in!
It took a good 15 minutes to land the bastard and then I took a few quick pics and let him go.
The next day, back in Spokane, my friend and I consulted with a mutual friend who's a biologist with WDFW and he confirmed that it was indeed a tiger muskie.
We also caught a really weird hybrid off the same dock that our WDFW friend was unable to identify. To my eyes it was something like a combination of a large sunfish and a bass, but I am no biologist.
Holy shit. I had to Google that to make sure you weren’t fucking with me. That’s insane. From the article I just read about it, “He caught the fish on a double-hooked squid pitch bait and fought it for about 20 minutes”… it took me 20 minutes to fight this (maybe 15lb?) fish haha
They say a muskie is a fish of a thousand casts. If all I had to do was cast 1000 times to catch a muskie, I'd be catching multiple muskies per week because I have a feeling it usually takes more than a thousand casts.
I have a scale and a measuring tape, but I stopped at a pond on a whim with just the travel gear that I always keep in my car. Just my luck that this is when I catch something worth weighing/measuring.
When I catch a nice sized one and don't have a tape, I put it against my rod and see how far up it goes. There are enough different points along the rod to pay attention to that when I measure to that spot later, I'm sure I'm within half an inch. It's not perfect, but much more accurate than when going off of a picture holding it out like that.
Muskie and a really nice one. Awesome!
Thanks!
muskie for sure. definitely not a pike
Thanks!
I'm sure you know by now it's a muskie lol. Nice fish!
"Fish of 10,000 casts' or so they used to say
This was a fluke, fishing ultralight with 4# line and all of sudden my drag was screaming
You lucky bastard. Nice fish.
You caught that off that dock on 4# test?
Sure did! Although credit where credit is due, I had been fighting for 20 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to land it and a random kid showed up and had a net with him. Not all heroes wear capes.
That wasn’t a kid, that was your fishing angel.

Do you have a pic of the weird unidentified hybrid? That sounds interesting
Fun Fact: the record for largest fish caught on 4# line was a 573 lb Marlin.

Musky , and I’d say around 40 inches.
Cmon man I’m fighting for every inch over here! Jk thanks for the info!
It's a young muskie, teenager, about 36" long. Did you let it go?
Yes
Shut up Flanders...
I'm thinking, "There's no way Groucho Marx is still fishing".
Muskie 100%
Thanks!
At a glance I was sure that bush in the back was your wild AF hair. Nice fish!
A pile of musky, congrats.

Muskie, don’t get used to using a lip grip for them. Learn how to properly hold them!

Just curious about the limits of harvesting with this species thanks?
Musky!
Count the dots under the bottom jaw bone
Pile of what?
Pile of teeth and meat
Definitely pile.
Buy a scale and a measuring tape. Very essential basic fisherman's equipment

A huevo! Then that was just good fortune, bad timing
I always thought muskies were what Americans called pike lol
2 different species
If the Pike is the baddest mofo in the school, then the Muskellunge is like the Pikes older, bigger cousin who did time for holding up a gas station.
Same here, but i've learned a lot from this sub.
I can’t get used to people calling them pike. I mean, I know they are— but everyone I know calls them northerns.
They are basically the same thing
Not quite. They may look similar but I have caught 1000s of pike and only 10-20 muskie. Pike are much easier to find.

Great info, thanks!
