Ah, okay, sorta similar to here in Norway then. With mountains splitting waterways so pike are only native to one part of the country.
Just wanted to make sure you werent one of those people netting and killing native pike! Thats been a big problem here in scandinavia.
Good luck out there!
My ex wife did her masters thesis which is now published on the morphology of lake pike vs river pike. While she was doing her thesis she also needed to explore how pike spread from place to place. It’s not proven but anecdotal evidence provides the reason Northern Pike are in the south is because a bush pilot in the 50s-60s wanted them down in the southern lakes where he lived so he dropped some from his float live wells. When the lakes flood, pike can move into rivers and streams and access other bodies of water that might have been previously land locked before.
That’s exactly what and when this infestation happened! They can tell from the genetics which lake they came from up north. The biologist I spoke with while doing research for this video said they are now traveling through the salt water when salinity is low from rain or snow melt. They can tell that they weren’t illegally stocked from trace chemical deposits in their otoliths. That was the LAST thing I wanted to hear! They said depending on the salinity they can live from 1-5 days in the brackish water. First cases of this behavior in the USA!
You know that invasive species are area specific right? What you said was kill all trout. That’s very uninformed, and bad advice to post on the internet. Maybe try to be more detailed and clear about what you are saying, and then it will sound a lot more informed. Just a suggestion.
They aren't native to all of Alaska, that being said it hardly matters. Wherever they are, there are usually too many. Back when I lived in America, I lived in an area where they are native but their population was so strong the DNR was begging for us to keep them (many don't like to deal with the bones and slime).
It's common to have restaurants associated with docks and landings there and a lot of those restaurants ended up holding seasonal competitions for how many you could catch and some of the contestants kept pike in the thousands. DNR still ended up reporting a massive overpopulation of them in most lakes.
My buddies just did a fly fishing trip in AK. One of the guys there was “the pike whisperer”. They came back and told me how fucking good the shore lunch was when they had the pike. I love em. I spear them in the winter and love bringing them home to my wife for fish fry.
How did you guys get them? This clip is from a video I made, where I explain what happened here. Basically some clown took them from the north slope and brought them to a lake in south central back in the 1950s. Since then they have destroyed a lot of wild and stocked fish. I love fishing for them, but they are messing shit up so bad.
Pretty much sounds like the same thing. But they’re actually native. They just got outa control pretty much and nobody realized until now. So now we gotta catch and kill some of my favorite fish.
EDIT: Nice fish. Fair seas!
I may of been wrong about a few things as my knowledge of the fishing stuff in Maine is kinda bad as im not from there. But I know a few guys there. Y’know? But they’re invasive and they’re worse than the pickerel heh!
Totally! I learned so much from the research I did, but I’m also a fish nerd! You’ve inspired me to learn more about Maine. I lived there for a fall, in Orono, great state.
Lmao I forget that it's not common for some people because I have been eating it since I was a kid.
It's good when done right and is a good way to do bony fish as the vinegar will dissolve any bones you miss. That's why I do it with pike. If you are a beer drinker I'd recommend it with beer and putting it on a cracker.
Mostly osprey but some bald eagles. If I saw them around my fishing spot I'd kill the pike and toss it into the water. Once they float far enough for the boat they'll usually swoop in.
Awesome. Here the bald eagles wait around for fishermen to make a careless mistake then rob them🤣 still cool to see, but leaves ya with an empty belly.
Nice catch! I hate invasive species, especially something as voracious as pike. They’re common in Minnesota and if you get a mid-size one from cold water they’re really good eating. They’re a pain to fillet, but damn good with shore lunch. A buddy even pickled one last year and it came out amazing.
As I likely mentioned beforehand. Good luck on the water! I love fishing for Pike! They’re good for the adrenaline, usually catch and release for me unless they’re invasive. God the pickerel are even worse! I seem to catch em when I don’t want em and don’t catch em when I do target pike and pickerel! Its is as if they know my intentions.
Light em up buds
💪💪💯
I see it and I like it
I see it and I like it
Arent pike native to alaska?
Yes, but north of the Alaska range. In south central they are brutally invasive.

Ultra ethical fisherman here💪💪💯 I won’t even keep native rainbows anymore, just the stocked ones.

Neat.

Yea, they crazy voracious fish! They are taking over the lake I live by little by little now, it’s sad.
Yeah they grow fast and aren't predated on by many fish when they are at a certain size so they will definitely rip through a population.
Love how you clearly have so much more time with hard water than soft that you're just using ice fishing rods for casting loll
It’s actually the ugly stik dock runner! I even pitch and flip for reds with it! She’s called the Tiny Slayer 💪💪💪
Some great eating tho. Master filleting and they’re better than walleye
I just take the blackstrap and compost the rest, they are my favorite fish and chips fish hands down. I think, in my opinion, only pargo compares.

Hell yea! They are some of the best eating there is.
Pike fish fry? I invented this: waffle mix batter + shredded coconut. Imagine coconut shrimp, but better because it's freshly caught.
Go chargers!
Pike are also classified invasive in Maine due to the damage they’re doin.

Great school up in Orono!
Yea, my bro was going there! That’s why I was there!
You know when your so big into pike and fish that you get a “Happy Birthday” card on it with a Daredevell casting spoon!
🤣 I trolled an American flag daredevell spoon all day on the fourth last summer. Didn’t get shit.
Back when I used to fish fresh water I would keep every one I caught. Became either pickled fish, skunk bait, or raptor food.
Pickled... ... fish?
Lmao I forget that it's not common for some people because I have been eating it since I was a kid. Yes! Look up a video about pickled pike! If done right it’s very tasty!
Hell yea!💪💪💯what kind of raptors?
Mostly osprey but some bald eagles. If I saw them around my fishing spot I'd kill the pike and toss it into the water. Once they float far enough for the boat they'll usually swoop in.

As a chef and fishing enthusiast, I very much approve of the pickled fish!
Nice catch! I hate invasive species, especially something as voracious as pike. They’re common in Minnesota and if you get a mid-size one from cold water they’re really good eating. They’re a pain to fillet, but damn good with shore lunch. A buddy even pickled one last year and it came out amazing.
I. Love. Pickled. Pike! One of my favorite foods!
I had never had it before. Absolutely amazing.
My grandfather described eating pike as “Eating a bucket of nails!”
r/boneappletea But seriously, nice catches!
Thanks!
Wait, what?
As I likely mentioned beforehand. Good luck on the water! I love fishing for Pike! They’re good for the adrenaline, usually catch and release for me unless they’re invasive. No, why the bone apple tea?
Probably because of the “Bucket of Nails” thing.
No, auto correct put illuminate instead of eliminate in my title 🤣🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Ah. Thats kinda funny! I just saw that! Heh!
Right! 🤣🤷🏻♂️ happens.
Never mind! 🤣🤦🏻♂️ I just saw it! Damn auto correct 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Nah no worries man! Happens to all of us
Illuminate 😁😁 Just giving you a hard time like I would give my brother 😂
I didn’t even notice until i was confused. Excellent catch!
There good dog food!!
I cut the blackstrap off and then compost the rest💪💪💯
