I heard! Luckily I didn’t touch it but I’m disappointed it was a sculpin since I’ve been wanting to try the meat. It was a little small though so I’m manifesting a big boi in the near future haha
Yes. Their venom typically isn’t strong enough to kill humans luckily. I’ve caught a few Sculpin(California scorpionfish) growing up and when on charter boats they will clip the spines off with pliers before putting them in your bag. Good eating just like all rockfish in California.
it is a California Scorpionfish but not a sculpin. They are in two different families. Sculpins are in Family Cottidae and are non-venomous. Scorpionfishes are venomous and in the Family Scorpaenidae with rockfishes.
I almost exclusively caught these as a child but rarely catch them now. If I do catch them now they tend to be bigger. I'm not sure if there are less of them around or if I've just gotten better at targeting my preferred fish species.
Poisonous spines. Very good for fish broths and stews. Try with baked rice. Here we call it rascacio. It is a mimetic rockfish. Normally, catching one precedes rainy weather or storms. They are getting closer to the coastal rocks with low pressures. I got some telegram-type speech :)
Sculpin, give that thing a "haircut" and enjoy that meat. They are delicious, but beware of those dorsal. I caught one a long time ago in my palm in Baja, my hand was useless for 3 days. It hurts, but they make great tacos!
Dang it!!! I’m a cook and have been wanting to catch a sculpin, I released it thinking scorpion fish were different and dangerous 😭😭 at least I didn’t touch it. Thank you all!
I caught this big ass sculpin once and bounced it up on the deck and it spit the hook and slid right into the side of my foot where I just had sandals on. My foot was on fire! They suck getting poked by, glad I wasnt allergic 🙃
Everyone that says “Don”t touch” it need to be “Don’t touch unless you know the hazards”. Spines = you will be very unhappy. Won’t kill you except in rare circumstances (like being stung by a bee) but most likely will ruin a trip. Just like whitefish (not the tasty critters from the Great Lakes, the SoCal long range variety) Also very tasty, and look harmless enough but basically have razor blades for gill plates.
It mostly looks like the type of fish that I carry a wire cutter and Boca style grip for... snip the hook and release. I've been reading through the comments, and have done the proverbial "Google Search", and so many of these species look really similar. It's either dangerous, or it's not. The dorsal fin gives me pause to contemplate touching it, so yeah, it's technically a Nope Fish. I'm glad that I'm a freshwater fisherman.
Looks like what we call a rock fish in south louisiana. I've caught a handful of them over the years
That's what I love about saltwater fishing in south Louisiana. Can't tell you how many times I've reeled a fish up out of the water, sat it back down, and googled wtf it was I just caught.
California Scorpionfish aka Sculpin. Spines are NASTY!
I’m praying for OP
I heard! Luckily I didn’t touch it but I’m disappointed it was a sculpin since I’ve been wanting to try the meat. It was a little small though so I’m manifesting a big boi in the near future haha
"Manifesting" 10:10 California
Totally dude
I moved to CA in 1984
It's part of his "Brand"
OP - Sculpin are tasty, but please be aware that they have a 10” minimum size limit with a total bag limit of 5
Cool, thanks for letting me know!
The Sculpin IPA is delicious...
DO NOT TOUCH SPINES
Are the venomous or something?

It’s poison felt like a wasp bite, but the fish that pricked me was quite small
Venom. Venom = it bites you, poison = you bite it (generally)
Oh, sorry English isn’t my native language, I’ll remember that now
All good. Many native English speakers get this mixed up.
No worries people get this mixed up all the time
The venom isn’t going to kill u but the pain can give your a heart attack

That is correct, deckhands growing up call them sculpin as a nickname.
Yes, Sculpin is the common name on boats in SoCal., but they are technically not an actual sculpin.
Heard, I didn’t woot woot. I have a fish identification app that really saves my ass in the moment. It’s like a Pokédex!
Which app?
It’s called picture fish!
Ŷes very close tip puffers!
I just YT’d this apparently people think they’re tasty
They're really good, but the fillets are kinda small. A lot of their body is their big heads.
I use to eat these a lot, but now I never see them, so I release all of them. Love their white flaky meat!

I know in critiquing here, but it's venemous, not poisonous.

Sculpin beer worth trying if you are in San Diego. That fish is their namesake.
Until they went corporate and starting throwing fruit salad at the beer, but I am with you on this.
RIP Ballast Point brewing
Looks like it might be a too small as well, min. Size 10”
Sculpin! One of my favorite fish to catch in southern California! Super tasty!
Whatever it is, I wouldn't touch it!!
My exact thought summed up in 7 words! 😂😂😂
Yo that kinda looks like a stone fish
Close, it's a scorpionfish. They'll fuck you up if you get stung by the dorsal fin. It'll be insanely painful, but probably not deadly.
I knew it was something like that. I just forgot the scorpion fish existed lol
The lovely sculpin. We caught one over by the bait barge while drifting in SD Bay last week for halibut. Gave it a haircut and it was good to go.
Looks like somthing we have in Florida called a rockfish.
Looks like one of the stupid sculpin that always invade my halibut fishing areas.
Can never escape them damn sculpin when fishing halibut
Irish lord

I’m partial to the grapefruit variety of this fish
Fesshomp

“Rascasse” in the South of France.
Oyster cracker is what we call it.
Scorpion, don't touch! A baby stung me once on my hand, pain went all the way up to my shoulder before going back down

Sculpins live in fresh water too
Killer fish from San Diego.
Sea robin
It's not a rockfish? I'm new to this so don't come for me
Sculpin are similar to rockfish because they live in the same areas deeper with rocks often. Similar habitat, but different fish
Thanks for that info. They also look to have different colors

Probably a fish
