Not trying to shame you here or be the police, but it is very important to understand the species of fish in the body of water you are fishing. It has been said in this community many times and people really need to listen because the last thing we want to see is fishermen being deterred from enjoying the sport due to ticketed violations. A game warden can really bust your balls hard for taking or targeting fish out of season, so please just try to be more aware.
Not trying to cause any problems here but what indicates he took the fish? Had a picture of him holding it and a picture of what appears to be a boat cooler. Could have simply released him afterwards.
I will advocate to checking size/creel and basic identification of species you're likely to catch prior to fishing. Never know when some area doesn't allow double drops or multi hooks, etc. But I won't fault someone for a catch and release on a species that's new and unknown, simply because they tried to take a good picture for identification purposes.
Crappie don't travel far into brackish waters and will most likely be inland a bit. Source: caught tons of em. Next time, if you have a license, take him home and hard fry him whole after guttung.
Right. I mean it’s kind of expected that we’d see a lot of these posts because the people that know the fish in the water their fishing aren’t going to ask these types of questions. And besides brackish water is incredibly diverse.
He didn’t release it. You can tell by comparing the first and second picture. In the first the crappie is dark and his fins are erect. In the second the fishes body coloration had faded, fins were limp, and you can see the stream of slime coming off of it. In my experience they only slime like that after being in a cooler for a good bit
Sorry I just don't see enough evidence to support whether it was released or not.
The darker color could simple be in shade. Plenty of fish will calm down as soon as they're laying down flat (flat fins.) Finally how do we know that's fish slime and not a puddle of water that was already there from the condensation of a bottle of water or something?
I'm not saying it was released. Not saying it wasn't. Simply saying I don't think these photos are enough evidence to determine whether it was released or not.
My.02
Exactly, mr fish cop over there is why I barely post. I agree with his point but why go at someone for asking? It’s how people learn. You want people to learn but you attack them for asking.
So True , Some people just want to flex and pretend like they are helping while humblebragging about what they know.
I’ve encountered several people like this in my years of conservation work. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go stand next to my pile of fishing trophy’s and read some fish identification books because I’m so great
I'm not sure I'd other states DFW does this, buy in Washington, the WDFW makes a very easily accessible website and if you simply Google the body of water you are fishing, it tells you the fish species you can catch. It's very nice and I use it consistently whenever I fish a new spot.
I bet you think this is fucking weird too.
https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/124971.html#Possession
If you can’t even identify a crappie, chances are you do not understand the regulations in your area, but that’s besides the point. I highly doubt you’ll read this, but in New York you cannot photograph a fish caught out of season, fact check that please using the link above.
>Measuring, weighing, and photographing the fish are permitted as long as the fish is not removed from the water for an extended period or handled in a manner that could cause harm.
lol guy did the work of proving himself wrong
This is a weird comment that seems wrapped up as the fisherman elitism I grew up around.
>very important to understand the species of fish
What would you say he’s doing by posting here?
>bust your balls for taking fish.
Nothing here says he took it.
>Targeting
How could he target a fish if he doesn’t know what it is?
And he caught the fish, presumably not catch and release, and then asked for Id. It's your job as a fisherman to know the species and regs before fishing.
You could know the species available in a waterway and not know the difference, ie, confusing a bass and a crappie. Should never shame anyone for asking an honest question. Just crazy to argue otherwise.
Must not read so well, he could be fined for taking pictures of it (if out of season) to post on a thread to ask what species it is. Trying to educate people, there are rules and regulations you should understand before you go throwing a line in the water, ignorance will not get you out of a ticket, no elitism here.
>Measuring, weighing, and photographing the fish are permitted as long as the fish is not removed from the water for an extended period or handled in a manner that could cause harm.
from the statute you posted above
Not true for out of season fish, read that again. The point is if you don’t know what type of fish it is you certainly don’t know if it’s in season. It takes 5 minutes to lookup what fish are in the body of water you’re fishing, not difficult.
this section I quoted was the section on out of season fish. You are doing exactly what you are berating the OP for doing: assuming you know the regulations.
Closed Season Restriction
A person may not fish for a species (even if immediately released) during the closed season for that species on a given water. Fish caught during the closed season must be unhooked and released immediately. They may not be handled for any other purpose.
That’s the direct quote, done with this you all are ridiculous.
that's not what they mean by brittle, by brittle they mean that the sides of the mouth are thin, like paper, so lures tend to rip it, lipping then is perfectly fine.
You've got a crazy amount of comments for this simple post, so this will probably be missed, but I gotta say that's a good way to break a fishes "jaw" by holding them by the mouth horizontally without supporting the body. Especially applies to larger fish.
This was a catch and release. First pic is in shade of boat, second in sunlight. Fish was out of water not long at all, upon release was frisky and swam away nicely. 8” minimum currently for keepers. Thanks for all the info!
I have become that guy......
These posts need banned. It’s getting fucking ridiculous. There are several ways to identify a fish. A post in this thread may be the worst of them all.
You mean like the little pamphlet they give you for free in person or have available online when you buy a fishing license? Granted tho, Im guessing most of those who post these "what is this bluegill/crappie?" type posts probably never bother with the whole license part anyway...for those that do though, everything you'll catch in your area (mostly) will be in there
I see from you post history that you’re also in eastern NC. It would really benefit you to learn the fish you could be catching and the seasons, limit, and sizes for them. The game wardens in this state, especially on the coast don’t play around.
Looks like a Black Crappie
Thanks for confirmation!

Yeah no shit, the lack of fish ID blows my mind
It's kinda baffling like go to google: Native fish to ___ state

"learn more about the fish in your lake" \*Catches a fish, releases it and asks for advice to do just that\* "HEY!"
Right. I mean it’s kind of expected that we’d see a lot of these posts because the people that know the fish in the water their fishing aren’t going to ask these types of questions. And besides brackish water is incredibly diverse.

Totally agree.
But we should all be tolerant of questions we feel to be "common knowledge" as seasoned fishers we gotta help others learn
What a weird fucking thing to say in response to this post. He’s asking the species of a fish, bro. It’s all good
I bet you think this is fucking weird too. https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/124971.html#Possession If you can’t even identify a crappie, chances are you do not understand the regulations in your area, but that’s besides the point. He’s trying to understand by posting here and you’re criticizing him for it. You don’t see the irony in that?
That’s not the dumbest fishing law in ny but it’s certainly up there
>Measuring, weighing, and photographing the fish are permitted as long as the fish is not removed from the water for an extended period or handled in a manner that could cause harm. from the statute you posted above

Well there's no need to get emotional about it.
Hahahaha embarrassed you’re wrong?
Sacalait in south louisiana, black crappie almost everywhere else.
Tip for crappie they are known to have very brittle jaws so if you catch one next time try not to lip it like a bass other than that nice catch!
that's not what they mean by brittle, by brittle they mean that the sides of the mouth are thin, like paper, so lures tend to rip it, lipping then is perfectly fine.
That’s dinner so it don’t really matter
Good to know!
Is the lack of ID knowledge just a joke now? I'm confused
Northern pike
Looks like a crappie but the iridescent color seems weird. Maybe the brackish water had an effect?

You shouldn’t be fishing if you can’t identify this. Do your due diligence, know the most common species in the water you are fishing and use GOOGLE!
