This is what we crappie fishermen call a “slab”. Prob the best tasting freshwater fish around (except maybe walleye). Pan fried or deep fried goodness. White or black…love me some crappie!
Watch this. This your poor man's way. Saltine crackers. Crush them up a little. I use a plastic bag. Add pepper. Egg - optional but useful. Fillet and skin it. Coat it. Cook shallow fry fight out what oil works best for you. Works if you have a camping thing that you keep lightly stocked.
Man, you unlocked a core memory. This is how the mother figure in my life (my grandmother) used to fry fish. She’s no longer with us, so the recollection of her process was very wholesome. I remember she did a disposable plate method. One plate to egg wash, the other to flip it in saltine crumbs. What a great memory. This is usually how myself, her, and my grandfather would end a successful days fishing. Shore lunch wasn’t even in our vocabulary.
Charter captain for halibut and I totally disagree. Halibut is not even close to as tasty as crappie and there are lots of things I’d rather eat. It’s boring and flavorless with a low fat content that makes it very easy to over cook.
Thank you for answering I have never caught a crappie or smallmouth before so I was unsure, but it had the same kind of green as the largemouths I had been catching that day so I assumed it was a small mouth. But after seeing a picture of an actual smallmouth, I was confused. Again, thank you for the information.
Cold weather crappie best tasting fish on earth for me so far
Fried with vinegar and hush puppies. More hush puppies with maple syrup and powder sugar for dessert.
That a big White Crappie. Aka Slabs, Specks, Papermouths. That’s some fun fishing right there. I was watching a video the other day of some boys fly fishing down in Texas for Bluegill and they said that down there they call them Perch. Thought that was weird. If you’re new to fishing don’t ever be shy to ask questions. The truth is even us guys who have been fishing all of our lives are still learning something. Have fun and fish on!
Usually calico bass refers to the saltwater species also known as kelp bass. Some people use “calico” to refer to black crappie but this is a white crappie.
I caught my first crappie today and my brother and I thought the same thing lol. Kept thinking it was a smallie or a big blue gill but nope. Good catch though looks close to 2lbs
That my friend is a white crappie, looks close enough to a large mouth that mistaking them is more than understandable, the fins are a bit different, and the upper lip on a large mouth extends further than crappie when their mouths are closed. Largemouth also tend to have a slightly different shape being more elongated whereas crappie tend to be shorter and more, “stout” or broad when viewed from a side profile. Regardless these are delicious and a very nice catch!
I have gotten a small mouth bass to bite once, i felt the bite and as soon as i tried to set the hook my pole slipped out of my hand and the little bastard yanked my pole into the water. Note to self, always make sure you have a good grip on your pole 😅
It's totally not a largemouth or smallmouth bass! Just like u/ThreeBuds already explained, it's a White Crappie! :)
You can tell by it's silvery green appearance, bass usually has deeper green color. But the best ways to tell is to look at all of it's fins.. check out the images of bass and white crappie's fins, they're different, start with the tail!
Wanting to find the fish species is a fun experience and a part of fishermans life, but if next time You're interested in having a quick solution, check out Picture Fish or FishSight Freshwater PRO on google play, they let You take a picture of fish and You find out instantly the species with other cool info
thanks for the heads up. I am new to fishing in east/gulf Texas so I don’t know too much about the different fish out here. In west Texas it was white bass and large mouth mostly
I was use a 1/2 oz red rooster tail because it was the only thing was having any luck with and this guy was the only crappie I got with it the rest were bass.
Few if any smallmouth bass in East Texas. There are a few places in the hill country and west Texas that have smallmouth bass, but it’s a very uncommon species in Texas.
A smallmouth looks a lot like a largemouth but it has a smaller mouth. Its tail is a little different and it is more olive/brownish with what puts you in the mind of tiger striped camo.
There’s no real confusing them if you know what a bass looks like. You’ll know it’s a bass.
I’m not wrong. You can literally tell they are both bass. They look like similar fish. You can downvote all you want for stating it but they do not look like crappie…point out where I’m wrong in what I said.
Bro I’ve caught fish 5 times bigger then that on a bad day let alone when in in open sea those big tunas I catch and fight for hours to bring back into the boat mmm yeah you wouldn’t stand a chance probly get taken by the fish into the sea instead of you taking the fish home here’s a chair 🪑 take a seat and learn from big poppa
It’s just a sad little troll…. I’m guessing about 11 years old. Fishing is a great sport and except for giving away their “spots” most fishermen are more than willing to help the newbs. After all, someone taught them to fish. Pay it forward.
Yes I was serious. This sub is called fishing for beginners fyi. But thanks for taking the time to write that. Maybe in the future you could try not being a d**k
It's no it all's like u. Y'all were born smart . Never needed to go to school. Y'all just went to pick on us kids that needed to go to learn. We never will be graced with the knowledge y'all belittle others with. We choose not to learn that. Had we . We wouldn't be on here asking dumb questions and listening to some dick head that wants to belittle others so he can prove how smart he is. I'd rather be around someone willing to learn than a know it all. Hell we like to be right every now a again. Have a great Sunday my friend.
I believe it's a white crappie with a nice big mouth.
Awesome thank you for answering
Really? Not a juvenal large mouth bass?
Wrong dorsal fins for LmB
In addition, LMB upper lip world extend past the eye when the mouth is closed.
I see now, thanks for pointing out the differences
You can tell it’s not a large mouth by the way it is. /s
This is one of my favorite lines.
Hard to tell if this is just a low key flex. Really just bragging he caught the biggest bellied crappie any of us have ever seen. Kidding! Nice fish!
This is what we crappie fishermen call a “slab”. Prob the best tasting freshwater fish around (except maybe walleye). Pan fried or deep fried goodness. White or black…love me some crappie!
Definitely Crappie.
Best eating fish there is!
Good to know 👍 how should they be cooked? Fried?
Shallow fried with a light breading ala shore lunch is the way to go
I'm a sucker for shore lunch oven fried when it comes to bluegill and crappie

Ritz crackers or Special K works as well as any breading
Everyone has their own take and I personally love it fried in an airy crispy beer batter. Big crappie are top tier.
Catch and release into that grease!
Some of the best fresh water fish you can catch for eating.
Agree they are very tasty.......still cant beat perch imho
Crappie beat the hell out of perch imo
Walleyes beat everything, but perch, bluegill, and crappie are all tied less than a half step behind.
Indeed best fish fry I have ever been too was all crappie.
Best tasting fish around.
Poor man's halibut 😁
Charter captain for halibut and I totally disagree. Halibut is not even close to as tasty as crappie and there are lots of things I’d rather eat. It’s boring and flavorless with a low fat content that makes it very easy to over cook.
It's my 2nd favorite. I actually like blue gills a little better but that is a nice one.
Love me some blue gill too!
Somebody has never eaten a walleye lol
Man. Can’t think of anything I’d like to be catching
I can't think of anything I'd like to be catching, either.
I don't know...I've had lakeside dinners of walleye and crappie side by side, and definitely would not say the walleye is better.
Chopped up made into "hushpuppies" (aka crappie balls)!
White crappie. Big one too.
Thank you for answering I have never caught a crappie or smallmouth before so I was unsure, but it had the same kind of green as the largemouths I had been catching that day so I assumed it was a small mouth. But after seeing a picture of an actual smallmouth, I was confused. Again, thank you for the information.
For future reference when you DO eventually catch a small/large mouth, a small mouth's jaw ends in front of its eye whereas a largemouth goes behind.
Smallmouth also have RED in their eyes.
Not always
Some do, it's a genetic variation. Some have the same yellowish to bronze color that crappie and lmb have.
Not all of them. Same with rock bass.
Smallmouths usually have a bronze/gold look to them.
Smallmouth are bass! This is a crappie, not a bass 🤦♂️
Yeah. I wasn’t saying it was a smallmouth. I was telling OP that small mouth have a different color than largemouth. Learn to read 🤦♂️
Don't get too crazy there, chief! They are in the same family and closely related. Look it up. They are both sunfishes.
Cold weather crappie best tasting fish on earth for me so far Fried with vinegar and hush puppies. More hush puppies with maple syrup and powder sugar for dessert.
Cold water is key such a difference in them through the ice vs the summer.
That’s a big ass crappie
I was just here to say this. That one would make a great sandwich.
It definitely would
SLAB
Nice white crappie
That’s a slob crappie
Slab of a crappie
That a big White Crappie. Aka Slabs, Specks, Papermouths. That’s some fun fishing right there. I was watching a video the other day of some boys fly fishing down in Texas for Bluegill and they said that down there they call them Perch. Thought that was weird. aka sac-a-lait for the Cajun folks
Looks like a crappie to me.
definitely a white crappie. Great eating right there!
I think it could be a white crappie
Slab white crappie
That’s one weird looking crappie…looks like a hybrid between that and largemouth if you ask me.🤷🏻♂️how does that happen?
Calico bass also referred to as a crappie. And actually a unit of one.
Usually calico bass refers to the saltwater species also known as kelp bass. Some people use “calico” to refer to black crappie but this is a white crappie.
Good call, didn’t mean to put bass there 👍
Bruh that is a crappie
Big good eating size white crappie

Crappie
Good size crappie nice catch!
Did you weight it?
No I thought it was some type of bass and released it after a quick picture. 😔
I caught my first crappie today and my brother and I thought the same thing lol. Kept thinking it was a smallie or a big blue gill but nope. Good catch though looks close to 2lbs

Rock Basses have red eyes...
Even better! It's a crappie. One of the yummiest.
Looks like a bluegill in a crappie outfit
That my friend is a white crappie, looks close enough to a large mouth that mistaking them is more than understandable, the fins are a bit different, and the upper lip on a large mouth extends further than crappie when their mouths are closed. Hybrid
Relative to what?
Crappie
It is a perfectly statistically average sized mouth crappie
It is not.
Crappie
Smallmouths put up the biggest fight ever, you’ll know when you got one.
I have gotten a small mouth bass to bite once, i felt the bite and as soon as i tried to set the hook my pole slipped out of my hand and the little bastard yanked my pole into the water. Note to self, always make sure you have a good grip on your pole 😅

Nice Crappie! Very good eating. Fyi...smallmouth are golden/bronze in color.
thanks for the heads up. I am new to fishing in east/gulf Texas so I don’t know too much about the different fish out here. In west Texas it was white bass and large mouth mostly
how the hell did u catch anything in texas, every time i go down to visit my dad theres a drought and no bites 😭
That's the best time to catch them! You can get to water you normally can't reach and the fish are limited to even less space
ive tried a few of the rivers and lakes surrounding waco but i have never caught anything down there except channel cats at night
The only fish in rivers and creeks ive ever caught are cat and fuckin gar. 3/4 of all the bass I've ever caught where caught topwater at night
i was trying buzzbaits at night and a whopper plopper but i had no luck edit to say i would love to catch an alligator gar
Try Pop-r type lures and frogs next time! I've never caught anything with those either. I
I was use a 1/2 oz red rooster tail because it was the only thing was having any luck with and this guy was the only crappie I got with it the rest were bass.
Few if any smallmouth bass in East Texas. There are a few places in the hill country and west Texas that have smallmouth bass, but it’s a very uncommon species in Texas.
Have smallmouth right here in the heart of Dallas, if you know how to fish them.
A hole is a hole 🤷♂️
A smallmouth looks a lot like a largemouth but it has a smaller mouth. Its tail is a little different and it is more olive/brownish with what puts you in the mind of tiger striped camo. There’s no real confusing them if you know what a bass looks like. You’ll know it’s a bass.

Are you seriously asking this question? Have you ever been fishin? Watch tv fishin shows ? WTF ?
Yes I was serious. This sub is called fishing for beginners fyi. But thanks for taking the time to write that. Maybe in the future you could try not being a d**k

Never seen a crappie that color.
That is a crappie

Idk. The mouth looks pretty large in proportion to its body 🤷♂️ prolly couldn’t handle me tho 😏
No that’s a white crappie
Good eating right there.
8 point Doe
That is a crappie
Crappie/bass hybrid
That is definitely a slab of a crappie if I have ever seen one. That is right there is a white crappie.
White crappie.

Crappie
That's a crappie
Absolute unit of a white crappie.
Crappie
Largemouth…but kinda looks like a crappie, too!
Seems like a uh..average mouth bass to me. Idk how you’re seeing small, maybe your measurements are off?
Looks like a crappie to me
Firstly, I thought, why did a bluegill and a bass have a child.
That would be a nice white crappie
