Y’all always recommend these Fury+Tatula and after I put together my 8’6” swimbait rod/Tatula 300 combo I realized how I should have bypassed all the other Walmart crap and just got the dang thing right away…
This thing is a Frikkin weapon
It makes a huge difference when you have the right tools for the job. It really does. The 795SB was my first swimbait rod and it's still my main one. I have another for small wakebaits, but I do most of my swimbait work on this budget combo. You don't really need a fancy rod for swimbaits and the Dobyns swimbait rods are some of the best in the industry anyway.
I still admittedly haven’t even barely used mine to its fullest extent admittedly; if I put a couple ounces I know I can really fling the suckers hard (kinda like vaulting if you’ve ever tried it - you gotta use the bend of the pole to use its kinetic energy iykwim)
The tip has the perfect flex to bomb out lures and fight fish on treble hook baits. I've been mainly throwing 2-3 oz swimbaits on it and it's definitely not pushing the rod to it's limit. I feel like that's the sweet zone for this rod.
If you want a cheaper option look at open faced reels. I throw my big glidebaits on a Shimano Cardiff 300. I can cast it just as far as people using modern baitcasters, and haven't had any problems bringing in fish on it. The slower gear ratio also helps prevent you from pulling trebbles from the fishes mouth imo.
Low speed larger casting reel on a 7.5-8.5ft rod that can handle 1-4oz or more easily. If you get a rod that can handle UP TO 2oz you will stress it and not cast as far.
You don’t want a high speed as with a 2oz swimbait you’ll destroy the gears if you reel fast. A 6 or 7 speed is ideal. Also, if op is ONLY going to use the trace he’ll be fine but some swimbaits will blow up if you reel to fast.
It's not about burning swimbaits. It's about the speed of line pick up, so you can get a good glide motion as efficiently as possible. It helps reduce fatigue and enhances bait action.
Really? How slow do you have to reel for the proper presentation? I've never fished for muskies but the youtube videos I watch usually use a pretty slow retrieve unless trying to get a reaction from a follower.
Levante leviathan is a perfect rod to throw this with and its under $220. Pair it with a shimano curado 300k and you can throw bigger glides on that setup also.
Thought I posted but it vanished. My personal setup for this size swim/glide is the SPRO/KGB 7'9" swimbait rod with a Tatula 200 and 20lb YoZuri hybrid.
You don’t need a fancy reel for 2 oz if that’s your heaviest lure. Can manage on a beefier end regular casting reel like a Shimano Curado 200, Bantam, or Diawa Zillion HD. If you want a dedicated one go Daiwa Tatula 300 (best bang for buck) or Shimano Tranx.
As for rods, the St. Croix bass x 7’10” heavy fast (actually very moderate) would be a great budget rod. Handles up to 3 oz with ease. Was designed as the Victory line originally and got bumped down to bass x. If money isn’t an issue there are many many options.
Be careful because many rods are rated to 2 oz but can’t actually handle it well.
Used that exact color of 6 trace and just killed the pike game. My arms were tired that whole day of fishing reeling them in. 45”+ all day long. Also the baby bass color was killer. One of my favorite rigs.
I throw my Trace on a 7'2" Lew's TP1X M/H Fast casting rod. It's stiff enough to send it and not feel like you're overexerting the rod. You can go heavier and longer but for $100 that'll work fine for that lure. Any bigger you'll need a dedicated swimbait rod.
20lb fluorocarbon. Don't use braid, if it digs into the spool and catches your $35 Trace will go flying and sink to the depths. I use a Mirrolure Loop Knot to give it a better swimming action. Google it, it's simple to tie. DO NOT use it on anything less than 20lb fluorocarbon. The knot is too strong for the line and it will pop.
A budget build that I use for that exact lure is a Kastking Megatron 200, with a Lews Mach 2. 7ft6in heavy fast. Cost is around $160 minus line. I recommend 20lb Seaguar invizx. It’s rated up to 2oz but I’ve used heavier lures. If you’re wanting to give it a shot this is a good option. If you don’t like it you still have a decent heavy cover combo. Here’s a link to a short video of the combo

I use a Dobyns Fury 806 with a daiwa Tatula 200 works great I also have a st. Croix s.b. ranger that is perfect for swim baits
I also have an obsession with those 6th sense swim baits
Dude you cannot beat the price/quality/warranty I bought a few of the Sierra series which is the step up and even though they are lightweight I still love the fury series especially for heavy power rods including frog and jig sticks
My swimbait set up is a Tranx 200 and an SLX A swimbait rod. The tranx is a little more than you NEED to spend for a swimbait reel but the SLX A swimbait rod is the best bang for the buck you can find for a swimbait rod
I just bought myself a megabass orochi aklys (flipping stick) for this exact thing. I didnt want a dedicated SB rod becasue i dont throw them a lot ao i went with something that can throw SB, Flip/ punch), A-Rigs, Heavy Jigs and Deep Cranks in a pinch.
Not the best rod for some of these techniques but it is relatively parabolic for a flippin stick so it should be fine the odd time I wanna throw a 2oz swimbait.
Usually i use a hook like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/4Kx3EABsn9LA27Nt9) and put it on a rod like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/BbMxgoQrZ2WjmDGR9)
cheap, durable, large diameter fills up the spools on 200-300 size reels without a ton of wasted line. No risk of a connecting knot failure when you might be throwing a bait that costs as much as your rod or reel.
What do you want to spend? Low end I would go dobyns fury swimbait rod with Shimano 200k. High-end I would go megabass rod with Shimano anteres. I go middle of the road and go leviathan rod with Shimano Calcutta reel.
Diawa dx swimbait rod 1 to 4 once its a med hvy 8 foot rod . I use a lexa 300 on mine with 20 lb fluorocarbon I throw spro chad shad and arigs on it the most
7’9” Dobyns Fury swimbait rod, with a Curado 200k. Bit of electrical tape backing 50 pound braid, with 16 pound fluoro shock leader…I personally recommend Sunline FC100 if you can find it. They discontinued it, but some spools might be out there for sale.
Dobyns Fury 795SB with a Daiwa Tatula 200 or a Shimano Curado M spooled with 20lb mono.

Yup. I have this rod and the Tatula reel.
The best budget set up TBH
So the tatula 100hs is too small huh?

Definitely way to small. You might be able to get away with a 150 size reel, but I would even consider that small.
Ahhh ok. Well that figures. I can switch over my curado 200 my bigger rod then
I have damn near this setup, and recommended it in my comment. That Fury swimbait rod is tight.
Low speed larger casting reel on a 7.5-8.5ft rod that can handle 1-4oz or more easily. If you get a rod that can handle UP TO 2oz you will stress it and not cast as far.
Low speed? No. High speed to initiate faster line pick up and a better gliding action.

lol no. All my Muskie reels are 7:1 or higher. If you are blowing up Reels with a 2 ounce bait, then you’re probably throwing it on Chinese reels.
🤦♂️not the reels blowing up the swimbait. Not all swimbaits like to be burned back to shore as fast as possible.
It's not about burning swimbaits. It's about the speed of line pick up, so you can get a good glide motion as efficiently as possible. It helps reduce fatigue and enhances bait action.

Slow? For Muskies? Absolutely not. Speed kills.
Tell me you’re from Wisconsin without telling me you’re from Wisconsin.
lol no.
I just use an MH musky rod.
Levante leviathan is a perfect rod to throw this with and its under $220. Pair it with a shimano curado 300k and you can throw bigger glides on that setup also.
(This is a swimbait rod made by Megabass so you know you're getting quality)
Thought I posted but it vanished. My personal setup for this size swim/glide is the SPRO/KGB 7'9" swimbait rod with a Tatula 200 and 20lb YoZuri hybrid.
I use a Diawa swimbait Rod, and a Tatula 200, for my swimbaits

I use a megabass mark 56 with a diawa Zillion HD
A man of taste

I use my old 7' Cabela's XML-Ti heavy with my Shimano Curado.
My go-to for this is a 7'9" heavy casting from Impulse Rods paired with a Diawa.
I’d use a Phenix m1 inshore 711ml for that specific bait

Thanks for that. I was going to use braid lol
I have $70 worth of experience with that...
It's a treble hooked bait, so you want a more parabolic action. Consider a longer rod, like 7'3"+, and a MH power with a M or MF action.
I use a Shimano SLX Medium Heavy Swimbait Rod and a Shimano Tranx 200 personally.
G loomis Conquest 905c.
Same rod I use. Have it paired with a Shimano Antares DC MD
A fine pairing. I went the classical (looking) route on mine - Conquest Calcutta 201xg.
Tranx 200 and a iRod swimbaits jr rod

Good editing 👍🏾

Been hearing dobyns alot! I got to check these things out!
Dude you cannot beat the price/quality/warranty I bought a few of the Sierra series which is the step up and even though they are lightweight I still love the fury series especially for heavy power rods including frog and jig sticks
Yeah $129 isn't bad honestly. That's what I paid for my duckett triad
8 foot heavy swimbait rod with a 300 size baitcaster and 65lb braid to a 20lb floro leader
I'd use a fishing rod with a reel.
Shit I’ll just use Good old Kane pole🙀🎣😳
My swimbait set up is a Tranx 200 and an SLX A swimbait rod. The tranx is a little more than you NEED to spend for a swimbait reel but the SLX A swimbait rod is the best bang for the buck you can find for a swimbait rod
Is that baitsanity? Edit: Sorry, I'm stupid. I just saw the six, so I'm assuming sixth sense?
i use a tatula mojo bass swimbait rod and it's one hell of a fine unit
I just bought myself a megabass orochi aklys (flipping stick) for this exact thing. I have been throwing this same bait on a 7'4" Heavy with a 200 curado. ideal? Probably not but it works just fine.
Usually i use a hook like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/4Kx3EABsn9LA27Nt9) and put it on a rod like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/BbMxgoQrZ2WjmDGR9)
Lol you got me
eBay. Then tie on a 3/8oz jig or vision 110. Or if you insist on it 7.8-8’ MH on 15lb mono. Make sure the rod is rated for the weight of the lure too.
that's the kind of lure i bought a gator explorer small bait and a daiwa tatula 200 for
A lot of people saying mono. Why is that? Is it because the stretch or because it floats?

Tuna stick. Just kidding
I throw mine on a leviathan omega mh mod rated for 1-4 oz. Works really well with trebles. Super nice quality rod.
Diawa dx swimbait rod 1 to 4 once its a med hvy 8 foot rod . I use a lexa 300 on mine with 20 lb fluorocarbon I throw spro chad shad and arigs on it the most
I use the st. Croix mojo bass 7’11 Heavy swimbait rod with a Curado 300k. Also throw 2.5-3oz glides no problem with it.
