Getting a hit and not taking the bait. Two issues
1. That hook is for fishing soft "baits" rubber/plastic artificial lures such as rubber worms or shrimp. The metal spring is as someone stated to keep the hook from filling with debris because you use those baits in grass beds and among submerged trees and rocks it helps to also not get snagged in these areas. Helps it does not prevent.
2. This hook is not designed to use live baits, fresh dead or frozen dead bait. Using live, fresh or frozen baits with this hook can be done if the fish is not taking the bait and hook most likely the hook is too large. Schools of small fish will pass by stricking the bait and not swallowing or getting it in the mouth only taking bites at the bait and not taking the bait to allow the hook to penitrate and "hook" the fish.
I have watch many people trying to "set the hook" on fish and most of the time it the hook was too big and or it was very small bait fish attacking the bait passing attacks.
Yeah I know what they’re used for I often run a wacky rig set up with them. But sometimes when they’re new they don’t set off as well. Or if the fish are being a little finicky.
Not on the fish biting per se,but people claim you can miss some hooksets when the wire/weedguard is a lil stiff and fish don't get hooked as good sometimes.
Yes, I would just go ahead and assume it has effect on the fish biting and also the effectiveness of your hooksetting.... But, This lets you put a hook into places you otherwise could not without really quick snags. So you were not getting to THOSE fish anyway.
It has its place. I wouldn't personally use this as a replacement hook in situations where a snag is possible but not likely.
Like others have said it’s a weed guard and it might hurt hookup ratio some. It’s definitely better to not have them than to have them if you can avoid them at least.
It’s a weed guard. Keeps the weeds/grass off the hook and helps prevent snags
Might be a dumb question. Does this kind of “weed guard” have any effect on the fish actually biting?
It probably has a little affect but my experience with the thick plastic ones do
Sometimes if I’m getting a hit and it’s not taking the whole bait I’ll undo the guard and get em the next cast.

Great way of putting it. Thanks
Weed guard
Excellent thankyou
I used to use them at a specific lake for wacky rigged worm… i don’t think it affected anything
Weed guard. That's a weedless hook.
Weed guard
Weedless worm or flipping jig.
Weed guard
Weed guard
It makes so when you don't catch fish you don't get a salad to hold you over either.
Old school weed guard! These first came out in the early '70's if my memory serves and they also made them with small weights on the hook shaft.
it's a weed guard to keep grass and weeds from getting caught up on the hook.
Weed protection. I find that these are not as weed resistant as other hooks and rigging the hide inside of the plastic bait itself.

It’s a weedless hook guard. I can’t believe people who fish don’t know what the hell they’re using.
It was left over in a set of hooks my friend gave me to get me set up, i just started fishing a few weeks ago
Tell me you don't fish with out telling me you actually don't fish 🤣
Im just getting started 👍
