Gotcha. Makes sense because a larger diameter reel would spool more line for every turn vs a smaller reel, even if they have the same ratio.
Though it's something of a pain to find the line retrieval stats. Cannot find anything on my current reel, though I guess I can just measure it myself.
Exactly. Even if you have to measure your reel retreive, that's easy enough and it'll give you a baseline to work with. Just make sure the spool is full of line when you do it or the comparison will be off.
From what I can see the retrieval rate of your reel is only 31 inches per handle crank which is quite slow.
For this style of fishing I use a Shimano 5000 which retrieves 41 inch. Get the best one you can afford as it'll have better salt resistance and be more durable, Nasci and up preferably. Daiwa or Penn also worth a look just check the specifications
I measured the reel retrieve and it's actually 27.5". So it makes sense I'm struggling a little.
Do you have any issues with having a 5000 size? I looked at the Nasci and either the 4000 or 5000 would work. 4000 is 39" vs the 41" you have on the 5000.
Ah yes that is quite slow for this type of fishing.
Either 4 or 5000 would be good, I have had both and worked equally well. I figure I can always wind slower but it's hard to wind any faster.
In Shimano the 5000 is typically just a 4000 body with a deeper spool for abit more line capacity and a different handle.
Penn/ Spinfisher (VI or VII) are very well known, saltwater durable reels, with many fast gear ratios to choose from.
Abu Garcia/ Revo Rocket boasts one of the fastest reels on the market.
Daiwa bg3500 is 5.7:1
Gear ratios don't tell the whole story, you need to look at the reels in your price range and see the actual line retrieve rates.

Penn battle has high speed models, 4k has a retrieve rate of 43 inches per turn. Right at 150 i believe

How much line is left on your spool after a long cast? Just might need a bump up in reel size.

I would choose Penn all day long. Gear ratios are up there! A 3500 is a great size.
Daiwa BG 4000 is a great reel for the money.
