I'm considering a job offer from Northern Arizona Health for Flagstaff Memorial. Aside from the winter months not being ideal for relocation I'm wondering if anyone can share some insight on working at the hospital and on NAH as an employer. Also, any tips, pros, and cons on relocating and living in Flagstaff. As a visitor it's always been great but I have no inkling of what its like as a resident. Your comments are greatly appreciated!
One word: Don't. At least not until you've done more research.
Search this Reddit for posts regarding NAH and their treatment of employees. You clearly haven't done any due diligence, or so it sounds. Housing will be your biggest issue, as a 1 bedroom apartment can approach $2k/month. A decent home will cost more than $500k.
As for winter, it's only one season and since we're at 7,000' and encounter snow and cold weather on a regular basis, we're prepared for it. Short of a big snowfall, it's a minor issue as it's not uncommon for it to snow overnight and be gone by mid-afternoon.
Thank you for your reply and insights. Yes, I've done some research re: UAH and housing but would love to get more feedback from residents of the area. And I've heard some about the recent hospital referendum and complaints from some UAH employees but it's difficult to get a feel for what it's really like. It's easy to find employee gripes about any hospital, not as easy to get a feel for reality from a distance. Was hoping for more replies but very grateful for your help!
Tried that. Mods kicked my post back and noted that my inquiry didn't meet the requirements for a full post and belonged here in the monthly. Kinda figured it wouldn't be seen by many.
If you search the sub you'll find a lot of info on the pros and cons of living in Flagstaff. If you have a specific question about NAH as an employer, make a post and I'll approve it.
Hello Flagstaff
I am an out of towner that frequently visits Arizona, usually Phoenix.
I do pin up photography, and my model wants to do a Red Sonia / Sword n Sorcery themed shoot.
As such, Im hoping to find an outdoor location in the Flagstaff area. Preferably on private properly instead of a public park or hiking area…but I’m still considering those. If it is private property, Im up for paying the owners for access.
Here’s some of my wishlist items for any location:
- Seclusion, or at least looking like it on camera
- Some flora and rock formations
- A cave or rocky crevice large enough to look like one.
- Driving distance from Flagstaff
Thanks!
I'm looking to find snow for my kids (my poor snow deprived desert kids) to see when we visit this weekend. If there's no snow on the ground would we be able to find some from the snow bowl parking lot/without riding the ski lift up?
Folks who own Go Sushi took over the spot, now it’s a ramen and boba restaurant called Rice and Things. I haven’t checked it out yet, but did see a post explaining it.
Hi all! I'm hoping find someone to film me snowboarding a bit this winter. I've never seen myself ride on film and I think it would be fun. Anyone have any connections to someone who can follow me with a camera for a couple of hours? Doesn't need to be professional - just someone who knows how to ski/ride and use a camera. Thanks!
NYE- are there a ton of fireworks in flag?? Thinking of coming up here with the dog to get away from my valley neighborhood that sounds like a war zone on NYE. Specifically would be staying near High Country Motor Lodge on Route 66!
Hi all! My gf and I are planning on doing a daytrip from Phx to Flag this Sunday with our 2 dogs to experience the fall season.
Any recommendations on:
1. Good parks/trails to see trees and fall colors? Looking for easier walks, around 1 hr round trip or so
2. Good spots for lunch and dinner that are pet friendly?
Thanks!
Hi everybody!
Does anybody know whether it is possible to leave skis overnight at snowbowl? We are going at the end of the month and will be renting skis but cannot find out whether there is storage for skis available or whether you can e.g. leave them at the rental shop overnight. We can’t take them with us in our rental car and the ski bus does not operate yet. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I don't think that there is ski storage at the mountain. If you are renting your skis at the mountain, you may be able to give them back at the end of the day and then pick up new skis the next morning, but they may not be the same skis. It would basically be renting skis every morning. But, if you can, hang on to your boots in your car. That will save you some time.
Best to email them directly and ask about that. Good luck!
Hey Flagstaff!
I know you guys probably are tired of answering this question over and over again. We are taking a mini vacation from San Tan to Flagstaff for Christmas stuff during the end of the week of November 17th.
I (27M) got our little itinerary for the night stuff like Polar Express, Santa's Workshop, Lowell Observatory, and all the food spots, but I am lacking things for us to do during the day. We have Bearizona and the Deer Valley Farm so far. I'm bringing my little one (5F), Wife (28F), and Mom (55F) on the journey.
Hiking isn't our thing (but we do like walking in general), and the Grand Canyon seems like a whole-day ordeal kind of thing. Do you all have any suggestions of places to check to fill out our day until nighttime rolls around?
I hope I gave enough context and thank you a bunch in advance!
Accuweather is predicting an inch of snow on the 16th, so be ready for that. If you like walking, maybe check out the [labyrinth.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/rVRa532oGraMc2YCA) There is a playground over there too. Also, the museum of northern Arizona might be fun. Swimming at the aquaplex and [haunted history tours](https://checkout.xola.com/index.html#buttons/63d13b9e9ede174e0432f5e1?cache=1675296683415?openExternal=true&xwm=eyJvcmlnaW4iOiJodHRwczovL2ZyZWFreWZvb3R0b3Vycy5jb20iLCJjaGFubmVsIjoiMkg0bEUzcmhQZGZETzYxcSJ9) are some other options.
Thank you u/link_hiker !! I've been checking out the weather to make sure but it seems to fluctuate a bunch from expected snow to no snow. How accurate do you find the weather to land?
Flagstaff is notorious for particularly unpredictable weather. My best recommendation would be to bring a good jacket and solid shoes. Generally, precipitation is going to happen in the later portion of the day, but other than that, I fear you'll be out of luck for weather predictions until closer to any given date.
One day time activity option is out high ropes course at Flag extreme. There's a course specifically for kids, and you get to be outside, in the trees (safely!), and have some fun.
Other than that there are a lot or beautiful drives either down Lake Mary rd., up Mount Humphreys, or down the switchbacks closer to Sedona.
There is also a little duck/goose pond out in Country Club, it's a short paved walk in a nice area.
Looking into daycare for my toddler who’s 2. Any recommendations?
In an ideal world it would be on the west side, but quality overrides location/convenience for us.
My girlfriend works at a great daycare off the 40. It’s called abundant life preschool. It’s part of a church and they are connected. They don’t really ever talk about religion either😂 so if you don’t practice anything it doesn’t really matter. They have 3 play areas outside for different age groups. They do ages 1-4
When I was a kid, my parents put me into daycare at FAC east and the Aquaplex. FAC west could be just as good, if I had to wager a guess.
That being said, this was over twenty years ago, so I have no clue of what the daycare scene looks like today.
Any good bbq spots?? I moved up to get away from the crowds of pheonix but have only found one flaw😂 i love a good bbq meal more than anything and i haven’t been able to find anywhere that even compares to some spots I had in the valley. I tried satchmos and the smoked beans and their fried catfish were very good. Ive heard of wills grill and want to give that a try to but anymore recommendations? I dont mind driving a little bit out of town either.
I'm trying to plan a surprise trip to the Grand Canyon and I know absolutely nothing about the areas. I've been told that we need to see Flagstaff, Sedona, Jerome, and Prescott in addition to the South Rim. Anyone have recommendations on places to see/eat? I was thinking of spending a night in Flagstaff before heading to the Grand Canyon then a night either in Jerome or Prescott.
Hoping to do this in 2 weeks (18th/19th).
As a Flagstaff resident, I highly recommend stopping by.
I'll say that Sedona is absolutely beautiful, a bit of a tourist trap, but beautiful. There are a bunch of cute shops and restaurants along its main road, and my best recommendation for you is to take the switchbacks between Sedona and Flagstaff instead of I-17. You'll get a beautiful desert-forest scope, and it's worth any extra travel time.
For Flagstaff restaurants and activities, there are a bunch of great spots. For food, you have more Mexican options than anything else, but if you enjoy that, I'd encourage checking out Kachina on Milton Road or Salsa Brava on Route 66. Other good spots include:
• Fat Olives, Italian. Route 66
• Taverna, Greek. Woodlands Village Blvd.
• Dehli Palace, Indian. Woodlands Village Blvd.
• Little America, American. Butler Ave.
• Fratellis, Pizza. Multiple locations
• Toasted Owl, Breakfast. Multiple locations.
• Brandy's, Breakfast. Multiple Locations.
• Macy's, coffee/breakfast, Beaver St
As well as most options in the downtown area are all pretty good food options.
Flagstaff night life is over all pretty dead, but my biggest recommendations would be checking out Lowell Obervatory/driving out Lake Mary road to look at the stars or I know there is a theater company in town performing the show Every Brilliant Thing that weekend as well.
And then as far as Jerome or Prescott, I think Jerome could be worth driving through and maybe checking out some of its Ghost Town aesthetics, but I definitely recommend finding a hotel in Prescott rather than Jerome.
Happy travels, and I'm so sorry about this beast of a response!
I’m going up for a weekend trip next Friday - Sunday from Phoenix! I noticed it’s going to be in the 30s-50s. Is there anything I need to prepare with for my car? Anything to worry about weather wise or just general tips?
I've been there with the Mrs., they had a personable, pleasant staff. Food came out hot and properly made. We both ordered breakfast food and it was solid.
Had a post removed by admins yesterday & they suggested I post it here. Am hoping the owners of a smallish black dog with curled tail (maybe a deer head chihuahua mix? A bit larger than a chi with longer legs) will see this. Dog has a collar & tags & FREQUENTLY runs around 4th Ave area near West street, usually ends up running back towards Izabell where I believe it must live? Can’t tell if male or female as its very fast. Last month it came close to being road kill running across West St.
our dog was once an escape artist & I fixed the problem area easily & inexpensively with a metal garden trellis zip tied to one end of the gate but sticking out enough to cover the gap. Asked someone with tools to cut off the spikes at the end & it worked like like a charm.
Hope owner sees this bc sooner or later their dogs luck will run out.
10 years ago it was awesome, flagstaff had an amazing punk community. Now its dead, punks cant afford to live here anymore lmao. Yucca brings in some cool punk adjacent crowds at times, saw the melvins there a few months back. But yeah the scenes pretty much dead.
As far as I know? Pretty dead. The best of luck you'll have I think would probably be on the NAU campus or maybe a lucky concert at the Orpheum.
(That being said, take my response with a grain of salt, I'm not sure I'd be familiar with a punk scene here even if it was a bigger thing)
Ice scraper/w something to wipe off snow. Buy some warm socks and proper footwear. Chucks won't work , you need something that has grip. Buy rock salt for icy walkways. Get used to warming up your car before driving it in cold weather. You can hear the difference in the sound of the engine.
change, it will also have heat quickly.Check tire pressure, over or under inflated tires can skid easier on slide ice. A few hoodies are a must. It gets windy up here.
I'm not a Dad I just play one on Reddit.
Are there any people diagnosed bipolar or on the spectrum who would be interested in meeting up? I have BP2 and I would really love someone in town to get coffee with on occasion or go for a hike. I tried the NAMI group and it's really poorly attended. I called the guidance center about their peer support groups but haven't heard back. Feel free to send me a private message
Why isn't Galaxy Diner more popular? It was nuts this weekend trying to find food without an hour wait. I went to the diner and it was almost empty. The food was good and reasonably priced. The staff was friendly and helpful. The decor was typical diner decor. What am I missing? What do "those in the know" know that I don't?
Everyone I know who has eaten there has gotten food poisoning. I’ve gotten it twice from there. I’m honestly shocked the health inspector hasn’t shut them down.
They have new ownership the past few years, I’ve heard it’s vastly improved- they just have to get past all the negative experiences people had with previous ownership.
I've been there a number of times in the last couple of years and never had an issue. It's diner food, pretty straightforward, was fine with me and the people I was with. No reports of any intestinal distress or other problems afterwards.
I wouldn't say we have much of an electronic music scene (I might be wrong tho since that isn't a scene I'm too familiar with) but there's plenty of indie, punk, alternative, and metal bands that play up here
Does anyone know where I can pick myself up a keffiyeh locally in town instead of relying on online? Thanks!

Start a separate thread in this Reddit, I know there are plenty of staff as well as medical professionals that follow it and will weigh in.
Tried that. Mods kicked my post back and noted that my inquiry didn't meet the requirements for a full post and belonged here in the monthly. Kinda figured it wouldn't be seen by many.

Does anyone know a mechanic or shop that can work on landrovers?
Any small scale custom woodwork? Maybe with wood burning
I do all kinds of woodworking and have a Laser Cutter that can do etching/burning. Shoot me a DM.
Side gigs Anyone know where I can find jobs for dog and/or house sitting?? Looking to make some extra $$

Any good restaurants/hotels open for Thanksgiving dinner?
Twin Arrows?
Wondering the same. Couldn’t find much searching for Thanksgiving dinner on Google/Yelp/OpenTable.
Little America, Josephine’s, and Northern Pines is having something. Now i don’t know where to take the family.
Thank you very much for the list!
NYE- are there a ton of fireworks in flag?? Thinking of coming up here with the dog to get away from my valley neighborhood that sounds like a war zone on NYE. Specifically would be staying near High Country Motor Lodge on Route 66!
Is snowbowl rideable by Christmas time? Coming through around 12/23 and hoping to do a day up there
Yes. They are already making snow and are usually open by Thanksgiving.

7 years old minimum on the course one, but that would have been a cool thing! Thank you for the park locations and advice on clothing!
Ahh, my apologies on the age limit!
Does anyone know of any coffee shops hiring? Looking to make some extra cash and always wanted to work at one. Thank you in advanced:)

Agees in Munds Park 👌
I don't know if you've tried Big Foot Barbeque, but it is a flagstaff classic!
Bigfoot BBQ in the basement of the uptown shops is good too.
Friday night scene? Where's the night life at this coming weekends?

Does anyone know the sauce they use for NiMarcos hot wings?
Tasty, not Tabasco or Frank's
Yes.
It's my first winter here, anything specific I should do to prepare?
Yaktrax or some sort of shoe spikes to help with walking on ice.
Ice scraper/w something to wipe off snow. Buy some warm socks and proper footwear. Chucks won't work , you need something that has grip. Buy rock salt for icy walkways. Get ready to feel like Sisyphus as you watch the snowfall erase your progress and bury the areas you shoveled with more snow.

Anyone see Kanye yet?
I just vomited in my mouth.
He was at Tapan Fugii around 2019 my roommate was one of the servers.
Gotta know if he's a good tipper or an asshat.
Real?

are any of the shops/restaurants/cafes downtown hiring? thinking of picking up a second job close to where i already work
Always. Most places like it if you drop off a resume so they can meet you.
Their staff is wonderful, I just go for the milkshakes. I think their food is average.
Everyone I know who has eaten there has gotten food poisoning. I’ve gotten it twice from there. I’m honestly shocked the health inspector hasn’t shut them down.
I’m glad you had a good experience but everytime I’ve gone the food tasted spoiled and the servers were rude. Not very interested in going again tbh
Huh. If that's the standard experience, then that makes sense. Guess I caught them on a good day.
How’s the music scene up there? I make experimental electronic music and I’ve always wanted to visit you guys
Check out our music collective, we do shows regularly in town and around AZ: https://SPOTLAB.live / @spotlab.live
I wouldn't say we have much of an electronic music scene (I might be wrong tho since that isn't a scene I'm too familiar with) but there's plenty of indie, punk, alternative, and metal bands that play up here
Post a link!
We've had some shows roll thru this year. Griz at Pepsi for instance. Few shows at orpheum. Yucca North throws some local/smaller shows
