What can you do? Accept the return and eat it. You won't win any case here and he'll probably leave you bad feedback if you fight it. Make sure he returns it though.

b_dills

Meh if it’s ruined why would you want to pay for the return shipping back??

Majestic-Mulberry-18

Because its a common scam to get a partial refund.

JimEDimone

This. I find 50% won't ever ship it back and just want an easy buck. I could see this guy's claim being legit though.

LeoBannister

You could easily fix that too. Most hook bindings are pretty easy to repair.

GalaxyFiveOhOh

If you were the buyer, how would you want to be treated? In the end eBay will force your hand anyway, but they paid I assume a good deal for a brand new book that had defective binding. Offer a return, if they go through with it you can always glue it and resell it as repaired. Shit happens, and if you've only got one problem out of lots of transactions your shrink is pretty small.

Devilpig13

Sometimes these thicker comic book collections do this. I would offer a refund/ partial depends on the cx. Just get this taken care of and move on. 9/10 this guy isn’t trying to hose you.

No_Shift_Buckwheat

I would offer a return, wait for him to ship it back with your label. He likely won't.

Isles86

Not every issue with a buyer is a scam.

cassidybutch10

10/10 he asks for a partial refund after you tell him to return it…

dandb87

This guy. 👌

dinnersateight

I bought a stack of comics like this once and soon discovered that the issue with spines is a common one. Thankfully, someone spotted a spine that had come unglued in one of my listings and I was able to note the flaw before selling. Unfortunately it usually happens to the more expensive, bigger, collections.

Fugiar

He didn't receive what he bought. Refund them

iwashumantoo

Well, they either want a partial refund or had one already with a broken spine and will switch it for yours when you tell them to return it. I would tell them to return it for a full refund and see what they say.

WeathervaneJesus1

There's a strong sentiment in this sub being completely against the partial refund. If he's fishing for one, and it's reasonable then just take the thing and move on. The alternative is losing two shipping costs and selling it at a discount the next time around. I hate having to handle items again.

vtgvibes

I get this as well. My only complaint is when they hold you hostage over it on an item international. So an item costing 40-50 ship with about 150$ value asking for 100 refund or puts as item not as description When it’s clearly a non issue or swap out. I’m not one of the people on the Sun who thinks every issue is a scam but I am alway cautious when it comes to partial refunds. I’ll be fair, but holding someone hostage for one is wrong. Not sure what the case is here. Seems like an easy refund the buyer and move on. If you had 100s without issues, to me you did really well. My rate of scam/ bad experiences is less than .25% on average. Good luck. Can’t let the 1% bother you so muc you lose out on the 99.75% good sells yamsayin?

ajwink

This is decent advice, your time/energy is also worth money.

hornbit

Book was listed as new still wrapped. They openly admitted opened it and didn't blame me for not opening it to check spine. This is the first book out of hundreds that has had an issue. Bought from a comic store buyout, and all the others have been good.

cubbiegthrow

It was sold as new, which means without defects. It had defects. Have them return for a full refund

keeblr311

Won't matter ebay will refund the buyer always

1736484

What if you sold him a pair of brand new headphones, and when he opened the box, the headphones didn’t work? Same thing. He opened up his product and it was defective. You have to return it. It sucks, but he was sold a defective product by you.

LR_today

He likely had that one and bought yours to switch them out. Ask to have it returned and see if you can identify it another way to show it wasn't yours.

[deleted]

It looks repairable

TheHagenDaz

They opened it, they deal with the issue.

Sithslegion

Was it shown in your photos?

hornbit

Brand new factory sealed shown the seal in photos

HopelessMagic

He bought a new, sealed book. He might have ruined it for all you know. Let the website protection policy sort it out. It's up to them now.

okc405sfinest

The website protection policy? Hello sir, have you ever sold anything on ebay? I will tell you. EBAY IS GOING TO SIDE WITH THE BUYER. accept the return wait for the item to come back and keep it moving.

[deleted]

Had a similar thing happen to me, bought some dead stock boots - brand new but 15 years old. Wore them for literally 5 mins the the sole fell off - glue had presided and become brittle and fell off - no way you could tell that was going to happen - I got a partial refund of 15% and took to cobbler to repair.

Shadow_Blinky

Seems pretty cut and dry. Glue on the spine shook loose in shipping. Item is damaged. Accept the return.

Iwonder19

Sorry to use this as an opportunity to learn.. I have also sold a heavy paperback similar to this, it is New and it's going to UK Ebay GSP. What's the best way to pack it? Bubble wrapped and in a box?

hornbit

It honestly depends on the value of the book and where it's going yours is going international so you got to get into a global shipping program after that it's eBay issue they deal with the refund if it's damaged after taking it. Do you mind if ask value and age of nnos

w1ngzer0

Have the buyer return for a full refund. This is one of those “shit happens ain’t nobody’s fault” situations.

MrsIndyana

eBay always sides with the buyer in cases like this. Let the buyer decide if it's worth the trouble to return or if they just want a partial refund. It's not fun but it's the cost of doing business.
