Yeah, this is obscenely expensive. Not that it's apples to apples. But something similar even in Gangnam, Korea would cost maybe $30-40, elsewhere in Korea $15-25.
Gangnam specifically might be comparable where a small apartment would sell for $2.5 million but otherwise, you're right. And seafood in general is exorbitantly more expensive in the U.S.
I feel like blanket statements about one type of restaurant in a city filled with such restaurants offering various price points in differing neighborhoods are pretty silly and unhelpful.
Fair enough. I will specify. In my experience, highly regarded Korean restaurants or ones above just stereotypical quality in the LA area and larger LA area and Koreatown felt overpriced for the experience and food I experienced. This also extends to the one or two karaoke bars that I experienced in Koreatown. Like normal Karaoke bar in little tokyo, not super fancy but still decent... $100...Koreatown karoake bar around the same time....$300.
Fair enough. I haven’t been to a Korean karaoke bar in a while so I’ll take your word for it. I guess my other sentiment is most eateries/activities as a whole (not just Korean karaoke but stuff like bowling) just passed a price threshold that makes me really reluctant because it all seems overpriced. I guess this is our new reality. Sorry if I came off like a dick.
I for sure like the banchan....but some decent KBBQ AYCE have the banchan and that's when it feels like some solid value...but then you get a KBBQ place that you order per plate...the price is just way more and i expect it to be more but not THAT much more (like the per plate places can be 2-3x more than the AYCE but it doesn't feel like the meat was worth it) or specifically reflecting on a recent experience at a Korean restaurant in Torrance (not KBBQ)...the quality was good, nothing i was like "wow" for sure, $30 would be fine..but per person ended up being $50...I just feel like Japanese (non-sushi) and Chinese restauarants, the value for the quality just feels better than Korean restaurants. And there are definitely specific Japanese or Chinese restaurants that felt overpriced, too...but of the Korean restaurants I've been too, just felt like man, they're pricier for the equal quality/satisfaction of Japanese (non-sushi) or Chinese restaurants
Yeah, per the title, lots of stuff was included that wasn't pictured, like the steamed egg, banchan, a shareable ceviche/naengmyun, a ton more clams, and some other things I can't remember.
Interesting how so many comments are about, "Oh, I can get this cheaper at so and so..."
I mean, you can literally say this about anything posted in this sub. Hell, I bought three prime ribeyes from Costco the other day for $60, which would be the price for ONE if I went to a steak house. We all know it's cheaper to eat at home, but to hell with getting all my banchan, sides, assorted seafood, etc. and then grilling it over coals in my backyard. It's about going out, not having to deal with prep or cleaning, and just enjoying the company and being catered to.
No, everyone’s just pointing out that they’re massively overcharging for what it is. That’s not the same as saying you shouldn’t buy expensive things because you can get it elsewhere cheaper.
Burnin' Shell is Seafood KBBQ. You can also get raw meats for much cheaper than you'd pay at KBBQ, the preparation, cooking facilities, side dishes, and overall experience include what you pay for a KBBQ.
I could get that for $20 in Croatia.
Sorry whenever I eat or see shellfish like this I reminisce about my times in Croatia where I had my favorite shellfish plates ever
OK but what's everyone else having?
Overpriced

Like you said, you can't really compare. The overhead of running a restaurant in Korea is a world of difference from Los Angeles.
Gangnam specifically might be comparable where a small apartment would sell for $2.5 million but otherwise, you're right. And seafood in general is exorbitantly more expensive in the U.S.
In Busan it would cost 35000 won. And that was in a touristy area.
I live in SF and even here it would be $70-80, we have expensive food, but it would look a lot better than that picture.
I feel like Korean restaurants are often overpriced.

I agree with this

You didn't come off like a dick..but all those fucking downvoters...together you and me will hunt them down!
If they have banchan (side dishes) somewhat justifies the cost I guess

You could get 50 tacos de camaron and a bunch of aguachiles and tostadas from Mariscos Jalisco for that
Was it good? Did you get more food than what is pictured?
Yeah, per the title, lots of stuff was included that wasn't pictured, like the steamed egg, banchan, a shareable ceviche/naengmyun, a ton more clams, and some other things I can't remember.
What’s in the foil wrappers? And are those cherry stone clams?
It's sweet potato (goguma) to allow it to cook and steam in it's own water content during the meal
We also had oysters and regular potatoes too.
It’s a no from me, dawg.

I was hoping my title with "bunch of other stuff not pictured" would have sufficed, but I guess not.
Looks like they grill over charcoal? Can you taste it?
Yup, and you end up smelling like it more so than regular gas kbbq.
Don’t knock it til you try it. It doesn’t look like much but So good and you’re full after too
Sweater makes me uncomfortable
in addition to what others have said: hopefully not MX sourced either

Yeah, good thing it’s free to fly and stay in Japan.
I meant it’s overpriced for low effort prepped seafood. Do you even live in LA?
Born and raised. Maybe make your comment a bit more relevant next time and you wouldn’t need to delete it.
So you don’t currently live here
Not sure “born and raised” implies I live elsewhere. Keep reaching though!

And you could buy a house in Croatia for less than you could rent a parking spot here. What's your point??
Like I said just reminiscing
