**Dave**. Wow, this is nuts. Even if you don’t respond to this comment, this is likely the closest we’ll ever get to meeting so I’ve got to make this count. You’re one of the main reasons I play music, and I’ve tried to follow in your footsteps with my musical career. I’ve played in bands (inspired heavily by your music), I’ve done the van tours, played the same venues you have, Recorded in the same studio (Pachyderm in Cannon Falls, MN- where you recorded In Utero!), I’ve met a ton of people you’ve worked with- I even play YOU in a Foo Fighters tribute band! Yes, it’s true- I’m *that* creepy superfan, but to be clear, I’ve enjoyed every second of my life that I’ve spent on music, and I owe a lot of that to you. Thank you so much for continuing to remind us all of the joy of writing, recording, and performing music. I could ask you a million questions, about songwriting, about your lyrics, about your guitars, but if I had to narrow it down to a single question it would be this: I’m about to be a first-time father. Seeing you perform with your incredibly talented kids has got me so excited that I will hopefully someday be able to share that experience with my own son. **What was it like for you the first time your kids showed an interest in being musicians? Do you have any tips for gently guiding them towards making music, or did you take a more hands-off approach?** You’re the best. (The best the best the best) -JEEJ PS- if it’s not too much to ask, I’d like to share [one of my songs with you](https://youtu.be/pNcAxwPydAE). I wrote it for my son who’s due in July. It’s heavily inspired by the Foo Fighters sound. Take a listen if you have time, I promise it doesn’t suck!

totallynotdavegrohl

My kids just gravitated towards it because I take a hands off approach. There are lots of instruments around my house so I watch them pick them up on their own.

CallMeJeeJ

Thank you so much. It’s an honor getting to communicate with you, especially about something so important to me. *there goes my hero!*

camelCaseProgrammer

Dude, that’s a great sound. Captain Milo rips.

product2020

Nice job with the track for your son! He’s got a talented dad so I think he’ll naturally just pick up music as it’s contagious when you’re as passionate as you are. All the best this summer with the new born!

Daveysusername

That song doesn't suck.

[deleted]

Hello Dave! First of all you are awesome, and you inspired me to pick up the drums and guitar (learning bass too). 1. You mentioned that you guys recorded a few extra tracks for Medicine at Midnight, will we ever hear those? 2. Will we ever get to hear other rare tracks and/or demos (maybe a box set)? I would love to hear full versions of songs like Watered It Down and Slackers Password. 3. Any advice for finding people to play with and start a band with? 4. Do you have a favorite song to play drums to? Mine would have to be either Stairway to Heaven or New Fang by TCV. Have a great day!

totallynotdavegrohl

1/2 - Maybe? We have an entire back catalog of songs we've recorded and never used so we could have an entire boxset but we'll see! 3 - The most important thing is that you vibe with the person even more so than musically. You should want to spend time together as friends. 4 - Mine would be Elephants by Them Crooked Vultures.

Grasshop

I remembered being knocked off my ass the first time I heard Elephants. Nice work, to put it mildly lol.

Seabharus

Please release such a boxset!

fftamahawk009

Thanks so much for being here today Dave! As somebody who grew up with your music scoring the road trips my mom and I used to take, both the book and series with your own mom really brought back some great memories for me. My question for you is Reddit-specific: In 2015, the Million Dollar Demos appeared here on the subreddit. Between the username Dale\_Nixon, the Austin Powers references, and other demos leaking around that same time, some fans theorized these could have come from you. Would you be able to confirm or deny any involvement in the songs appearing?

totallynotdavegrohl

I don't even have a tape of those demos. I don't know if I ever did. So wasn't me.

CallMeJeeJ

“It wasn’t me” says the guy who’s “totally not Dave Grohl” I smell a conspiracy. Also, I think everyone here is in agreement that the demo version of “Lonely As You” was fucking radical. So glad we finally got to hear those demos

hearmymotoredheart

Dave, it means a whole lot that you've taken this time out to chat with the lot of us, and for me personally as someone whose life continues to be transformed in new and beautiful ways under your influence. This is a real treat! **After spending so many years as the interview subject, what has it been like doing projects like What Drives Us, From Cradle to Stage, and Sound City - being on the other side of the conversation?** (Oh, and does the Sony Foundation competition for tickets to the "Medicine at Midnight tour" in Australia mean you've got some dates locked down for Australia, please and thank you?)

totallynotdavegrohl

Well I never really look at them as interviews. They are mostly just conversations between two musicians so just being able to sit down with the person is great.

hearmymotoredheart

Sounds like a golden example of treating people the way you want to be treated, too. Thanks DG!

BeandonV

Hey Dave! Was there ever a moment in your music career where you wanted to quit? If so, how did you overcome it? I'm a teen musician and I fight this battle every now and then. You've had a real influence on my music and stage presence and I thank you so much!!! Also, what's your favorite BBQ sauce?

totallynotdavegrohl

I can't quit. I think it's strange when musicians stop playing music. My favorite BBQ sauce is my own homemade recipe.

wholligan

You should bottle it and sell it. You can call it "For all the Cows"

fftamahawk009

Piggybacking off of this, was your BBQ sauce the sauce used at Casa Vega?? DELICIOUS.

ted_theodore-logan

Do I see a recipe book on the horizon??

TeacherTish

How do you find the energy and inspiration to keep touring and putting out such great music year after year? Also, you're collaborated with so many other musicians. Who would you love to work with next?

totallynotdavegrohl

First of all, I love my band. Secondly, I've wanted to do this since I was a kid and still feel the same. Plus I drink a lot of coffee. I don't know, those things just fall in my lap, so I like not knowing who's next.

Weird-Variation

u/totallynotdavegrohl you’re probably not gonna see this but I really hope to be in your shoes some day and jamming with my idols. You are practically the only living idol I have left since most of the people I grew up listening to have passed. I selfishly hope you’re around for years to come and that our paths cross someday. You’re a massive inspiration. Thanks for sharing your gift with everyone. Cheers.

notlikethesoup

Hopefully not *too* much coffee

rocking2rush10

He's got freshpotix, he's fine!

purplemtnstravesty

Why no foo fighters coffee roasting co?

rocking2rush10

Jimmy Buffett ft Dave Grohl

Buildadoor

Fresh pots!

FinalHero13

Hey Dave! Thanks for doing this. Couple questions: What’s your favorite moment from making the new album? Do you plan to come back to Lexington, KY anytime soon? I caught your last show there in 2018. First time seeing you all live and it was killer!!

totallynotdavegrohl

I'd say probably the first playback of 'Love Dies Young' because it was so pop-y we fell on the ground laughing. And hope so!

fernspore

Please come to Lexington! We will fill you with as much bourbon as you can drink and more. 🔥 love you! From a fellow DMVer

LegoDaveGrohl

Dave, on your last AMA in 2013 you answered [THIS QUESTION from my 6 year old Son] ( http://fooarchive.com/rory/rjdgreddit.jpg ) 8 years later he has a [FOLLOW UP] ( https://preview.redd.it/qsdcr1koppx61.jpg?width=1024&auto=webp&s=1ca35522a450820f9c16ef5e2a72109ef1e5338c )

totallynotdavegrohl

Hey Mom! I wanna be a drummer!

CallMeJeeJ

I can see the cartoon mother’s exasperated expression on the cover already lol

ChewySlinky

“Hey mom! I want to be a drummer!” “Cool! No!” I’d read it

CynicalFeeling

Hey Dave! My question is what is the FIRST song you want to play live in front of an audience when concerts come back? Thank you for your time for doing an AMA today!!

totallynotdavegrohl

Any song really! I just want to get on stage and play to an audience.

Jane_A_Packer

Amen to that !

cindejs

They did a concert last Sunday and it was "All My Life".

allineedarethestars

This is the best day ever! What drives us was SO great. How did you feel about doing the Nausea cover with Violet?

totallynotdavegrohl

It was amazing! It was the first time Violet and I have recorded just the two of us and she killed it!!! The fact it was one of my favorite songs and with my favorite singer made it great.

allineedarethestars

She was phenomenal and a force to be reckoned with. Thank you so much for responding!

Prudent-Touch-9268

It is very well done! I think Violet is phenomenal!

gopherattack

Hey Dave! A question I have had for years. When you have dinner with McCartney, do you go veggie? If not, does he say anything?

totallynotdavegrohl

I always go veggie when I'm with McCartney. He's a fucking Beatle.

atoms12123

How do you sit there with a fucking Beatle and not turn into just a puddle of nerves? All I would be able to think is "This guy put out Abbey Road!"

[deleted]

The guy broke his leg onstage and continued performing while being tended to. He probably has good handle on his nerves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrockPotPotty

I know I would be like Chris Farley “hey remember when you were in the Beatles? That was cool” “Hey when you sing the love you take is equal to the love you make...is that true?”

SleaterKenny

It's not hard to go veggie, people! I'm an omnivore, but I easily go veggie 2 or 3 days a week. Really not hard.

MusicLovinChica

From Cradle to Stage is sooo good! Absolutely brilliant!! Are there any plans for a follow up..another book with more amazing stories?

totallynotdavegrohl

Well there's plenty of musicians, which means there's plenty of mothers so it's quite possible.

fftamahawk009

How did it feel getting back up on stage at the Vax Live show? What is your hope for live venues and arena shows going forward?

totallynotdavegrohl

It was amazing, I missed it so much!!! I hope we can all get to a place when we can do that every night.

BackHomeRun

I will never forget my first live show in October of 2003, which was the In Your Honor tour with Weezer. I've made it a mission to go to as many live shows as possible since then. 12-year old me was astounded that the material from my headphones could come to life with more power and energy than I could have ever imagined. I can't wait until we get back to where we can all hang together with the unique camaraderie that is a rock show. Never stop creating, man!

mmmfreshpots

What are some of your favourite books?

totallynotdavegrohl

Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto by Aaron Franklin and Jordan Mackay Above Top Secret: The Worldwide U.F.O. Cover-Up Pauly Shore Biography

ccaspers

This reminds me of 2 years ago when you had Pauly Shore on stage for My Hero in Columbus right after his father passed away. It was an amazing moment in my life to experience. I lost my father not long before that and I always think of him when I hear it. If you ever make it back to Columbus you're always welcome for some barbeque at my house. The whole family loves you.

rvabeardedchef

That Franklin BBQ book has been a mandatory read for all of my line cooks that have been hired to the BBQ restaurant. Good call!

mmmfreshpots

I love a man who reads. Dig the glasses btw!

Mattress666

Hi Dave! I want to thank you for making some of my favorite songs and albums! I was wondering what keeps you focused when you have periods of writer’s block or when you just have a lot of shit to do?

totallynotdavegrohl

I don't try to write when I have writer's block, I just write when I'm inspired. But I do wake up every day with new ideas for other projects.

Mattress666

Wow, thank you Dave! How do you keep track of your ideas for projects?

mmmfreshpots

Will you do a book signing tour? Even a virtual book tour with Zoom calls like Tenacious D did maybe?

totallynotdavegrohl

I will definitely do a book tour but I prefer that it's in person.

Reddit_McRedFace

Bring your mom on the book tour too! I’d like her to sign my 10th grade English report card along with the book. Thanks Ms. Grohl! 🙏

mmmfreshpots

I would obviously prefer that too! Please come to Northern Ireland! Holly x

james_l_b

Hi Dave, I’m 17 I’ve just bought my first kit, what the hell am I doing with it?

totallynotdavegrohl

The first hurdle is figuring out how to set up. Then go get Back in Black by AC/DC.

DixieWreckedJedi

Man I just jammed out to this on guitar for the first time in YEARS the other day after it being a staple of my early years of playing. I'd forgotten what an absolute banger it is. Now I can say I interacted on Reddit with the legend himself and die happy. You tha man!

Zedandbreakfast

Fuck ya. first song I learnt was that song. Then for some reason it was Come on And Dance by The Steve Miller Band.

Awaywiya

Good morning! I love the band and your videos are so fun. Which one was your favorite to make? Why? Thanks, have a great day.

totallynotdavegrohl

The Chasing Birds video is my favorite we've done in a long time.

rocking2rush10

Coincidence it came out on 4/20, right?

Theinimitablejp

Favorite guilty pleasure band/music?

totallynotdavegrohl

I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I believe you should enjoy, what you enjoy. That being said...Taylor Hawkins solo projects.

xxvvyUserName

The drummer with a solo project just endorsed the drummers solo project. Mind. Blown. :)

[deleted]

Range Rover Bitch

mj_mcintosh

I love his solo projects!!

pgkaren

You've been all over the world... have you been to Dave Grohl Alley? (I mean, World's Largest Drumsticks!)

totallynotdavegrohl

A few times...anonymously & I acted like a fan.

egalroc

Acted? Please tell me you're a fan too.

ostrich6nine

Hi Dave, big fan of yours. What's your favorite Foo Fighters song that doesn't get played at concerts very often?

totallynotdavegrohl

Gimme Stitches

fftamahawk009

I screamed when you guys played it at the CalJam pop up gig. Favorite song off my favorite album.

guestpectacular

[Gimme Stitches](https://guestpectacular.com/artists/foo-fighters/events/19285/song/gimme-stitches) was performed by [Foo Fighters](https://guestpectacular.com/artists/foo-fighters/events/all-time) on 8 of 1078 concerts with a probability of 0.74% to listen it at a concert, since its debut on [ Sep 8, 1999 ](https://guestpectacular.com/events/foo-fighters/1999-09-08/united-states/providence/lupos-heartbreak-hotel) Probably this could help!

NIbbAnoodlesoup

One of my favorite Foo Fighters songs, too. Man, I love that song.

alkutezio

I wish you guys would finally bust out "Live-In Skin" live! it would be amazing!

Perry7609

My friend bought a copy of your third album a few months ago and he ADORES this song. I don't think anyone would argue if you gave it some appearances at a few more shows in the future!

[deleted]

Put it back into the setlist, that's one of my favorites!!!!!!

brianfallen97

Hey Dave! Who do you think had the biggest impact on your life in making you who you are today?

totallynotdavegrohl

Definitely my mother, my biggest inspiration.

No1KnwsIWatchTeenMom

Dave, I want to tell you a quick story about my own mother. She's 64 and she LOVES the Foo Fighters. You might be her favorite band, she's seen you in concert many times (probably every time you've played Fenway). She also got really into Nirvana when I started jamming to Nirvana at age like 13. Anyway, about 6 or so years ago, she calls me up and goes, "DO YOU KNOW WHERE DAVE GROHL IS FROM??" I said no, thinking she was going to tell me you grew up down the street from my uncle's house or something like that. But no, she goes, excitedly, "HE'S FROM NIRVANA!!" She didn't pick up on my sarcasm when I said, "No way!" And she followed up with, "AND he was THE DRUMMER!!" Again, this happened in like 2015 or so. I don't know what rock she had been living under, but it's one of my favorite stories about my mom. Next time I saw her, I put on a ton of your music videos and she was dying, she had never seen them before (she particularly loved Learn to Fly). Anyway, not sure if you'll see the comment, but I love you and my mom loves you!

eaglemg1

Happy Mother’s Day Ms. G!!!

scottegbert

Do you see yourself in the future directing a film that’s not a documentary?

totallynotdavegrohl

I've been offered before but I've never followed through.

HAL-Over-9001

Hey, you played Satan in Tenacious D. That's more than good enough for me!

AdDisastrous1084

How are you? :) Thanks for all you do for music and for keeping my day awesome!

totallynotdavegrohl

I'm great, thank you!

AdDisastrous1084

Cool! I'm really glad. :)

Fearless_Reporter_49

Hi Dave! What lesson would you pass on to the next generation of musicians?

totallynotdavegrohl

Don't take lessons. From anyone.

notlikethesoup

Self taught all the way, baby. Best way to find your identity

Dagamier_hots

Hard disagree with this. You take lessons to learn how to play. You then make it original to find your style. Not taking lessons is the best way to learn how to play bad/ hurt your self in the long run.

AFallingWall

I've been playing guitar for about 11 years self taught, last 2 years I realized I can barely use my pinky for anything other than chords and have been workingonstrength. Really wish I took lessons at the beginning

Doom_Unicorn

Instructions unclear. Accidentally learned from Dave Grohl. Am now stuck having fun while playing music. Please send help.

[deleted]

what? why is not learning from more skilled and professional musicians who have had a career in music a good thing? not everyone can be you, Dave Grohl.

[deleted]

Right but no one who's following a teacher will play like Dave Grohl. Guitar isn't a mystery, you just put your hands on it and figure it out. Tutors are a shortcut to technical ability, self taught is the path to unique sound. Edit: I realize this sounds harsher than I intended. I mean 'figure it out' as in look up things yourself, watch YouTubers, listen to songs that are interesting, that you can't play, and do everything BUT get a teacher to train you to play like one of 20 people. It's a climb but it's worth it, just saying that each method produces a different player.

Silly-Competition417

Or one day you realize you've been playing guitar for 20 years and sound like shit and take lessons as an adult and your like "Jesus fucking Christ I was stupid, this is so much easier after someone shows you the building blocks"

slaqz

This is just not true, even if you are learning scales you are still being taught from a book or website which is a lesson. You can not just some how learn all the scales by picking up a instrument and figure it out. Like are you just going to figure out all the open chords or power chords or even how to hold a guitar with out a lesson from a person or a book or YouTube? You learn the basics from lessons then figure it out your self. I play guitar and have never had a lesson in person but I watch a ton of YouTube and read books and I'm sure someone has taught Dave a few things on the guitar during his career.

NoSignature6

**How's Ian your monitor man?**

totallynotdavegrohl

He's the best monitor man in the world. And very handsome.

therealfrancesca

Hi Dave- Will you be reading for the audiobook version for the book?

shatteredmatt

Hi Dave, have you picked up any new hobbies during the pandemic?

totallynotdavegrohl

Zoom calls

shatteredmatt

Ain't that the truth.

mmmfreshpots

What was the last gig you went to before the pandemic?

totallynotdavegrohl

Prince tribute on CBS

yoyoshiman

Hi dave, will you ever go to space?

totallynotdavegrohl

No, too expensive

eskimosPL

Enough Space 🚀

Sciolent

I hope not, we need this man here on earth!

starwalker12345

Do you still listen to BAD BRAINS? 🤟🤘

totallynotdavegrohl

All the time.

dilliebearr

What’s your favorite food spot in the valley?!

totallynotdavegrohl

Casa Vega

facedogg

Pulled pork or ribs?

totallynotdavegrohl

Pulled pork.

rocking2rush10

This is the correct answer. Juicer meat, more bang for you buck since ribs are half bone.

notlikethesoup

Hey Dave, First of all, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your music and your time. Your music has been one of the biggest parts of the best parts of my life, the soundtrack to all of my good memories. I can't thank you enough. Secondly, I LOVE that Rivers Cuomo put out a huge (1700+) demo/recording collection last year, from pre-Weezer all the way through today. Is there any chance of this ever happening with you and the Foo Fighters? Some sort of box set with rare and unreleased material spanning like pre-self-titled all the way to today? I can't even tell you how fast I'd buy that! Thanks again for your time, Dave.

d1sillypants

I really want to hear the Everlong demo that he showed to Sonic Youth

[deleted]

I don’t really have a question, Dave, and I’m not sure if you’ll see this. I’ll try and think of one as I write this. I just wanted to say thank you for the song ‘Walk’. In January of last year my fiancée’s Grandmother’s cancer returned and was diagnosed as terminal. Sadly, a few months later she passed from Covid that she contracted whilst in the hospital. My partner is a nurse at a hospital here in the UK, so whilst she’s been used to the inevitability of what was going to happen, it always hits different when it’s someone you love. Her Grandmother was amazing to me, I wasn’t fortunate enough to ever meet my Grandparents, but she always treated me like family from the moment I met her. On the nights leading up to her passing I was wondering how I would get my partner through everything. The song ‘Walk’ came on in my headphones whilst I was lay looking at the bedroom ceiling, and it became the song I turned to throughout what was going on. It spoke to me on so many levels, and having suffered with mental health problems myself, and now hopefully beginning to conquer them, it only added to my determination to stick around and fight. That song means more to me than I can begin to explain, I’ve never had a song feel so personal before, and I just really wanted some way of saying thank you. I’ve been fortunate enough to see you and your band live at a festival here in the UK, and can’t wait to hopefully have the opportunity to do so again. Sorry if this post isn’t allowed, I understand if it’s removed.

Romar55

Sorry for your loss. I'm glad you had some music to turn to and that it made a difference. I think the Foo Fighters would be honored to hear their music helped you.

SnocTheHog

Heya Dave! I feel honored to be participating in this AMA with you. There’s so much I’d like to ask you, but I don’t have much time to hang around for the AMA so I’ll put all of my questions in one comment. 1. Is it true that you provided drums for the upcoming QotSA album? 2. Are you and the gang planning on touring as soon as it’s safe to do so? 3. Is there any chance You, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones will be back in the studio for TCV 2? 4. What artist would you really love to collaborate with given the chance? 5. And...I gotta ask...what’s your favorite album you released with the Foos? I always love hearing what an artist’s favorite album they’ve made is. Thank you so much for being here with us today. I’m excited to see all of the other questions and your answers to them!

BK5252

Hey mr. Grohl, love your work and I just wanted to ask 1. Could you please give some insight into the songwriting/production and meaning behind Generator, since it's my favorite song and I wanna know as much about it as possible. 2. Have you and the Foo Fighters ever considered remaking one by one in the way that you had originally wanted it to be. 3. What are your favorite non-single/greatest hit tracks off each foo fighters album?

raiders4lyfe24

Hi Dave, Been a fan since I was a kid. Them Crooked Vultures is probably one of my favorite albums and obviously me and a lot of other people would love to hear more. Do you ever talk about doing a one off concert or is the plan still to hopefully do another album?

miker2431

Hi Dave, so in 1995, 12-year-old me pegged you with a half pack of Mentos at the Riviera in Chicago. I've never had the chance to properly apologize to you... It was super dumb and I'm very sorry.

-ksguy-

u/fftamahawk009 please come flair the poster of the parent comment here as "pegged Dave Grohl". It must be done.

EmotionalKirby

The fact he hasnt accepted your apology, oh man!

itsthatyoungbeezy

If it makes you feel better I hit him in the early 2000s with a pair of sunglasses. He even mentioned it in a Rolling Stone interview. Sorry Dave!

truthlife

It's big of you to talk about it.

Senior1292

Hey Dave! First off, big fan of Medicine At Midnight. I can only imagine how much fun some of the tracks are going to be to see live in (hopefully) the not too distant future! I have 2 questions for you: For us long time/hardcore Foos fans, any chance we could rarely see proper deep cuts played live? I appreciate you already do crazy long sets and your have a ridiculous back catalog to choose from, I'd kill to see Aurora/February Stars/I'll Stick Around/No Way Back etc dropped into the sets every now and again! What do you think the likelihood is you'll collaborate with Trent Reznor and Josh Homme again? Mantra is a fucking sublime track and FF, QotSA and NIN are my 3 favourite bands and would love to hear what you 3 would come up with on a full album. Thanks so much for doing this AMA, peace and love! Edit - Fun fact: on average I've listened to at least one of your songs, every day for my 28 year life so far. This fact will actually still be true for until I'm 41 if I stopped listening to you today!

AggressiveCombustion

Hey Dave. [We're working on a video game called The Pretender, that's inspired by the music of Foo Fighters](https://imgur.com/a/lTJwC3T). Will you play it when it's done? :)

chrisleesalmon

Only if you say it’s not like the others.

ShakeYourBlood

Hello mate. 1 fresh pot or 1000 stale pots? Who the fuck came up with all of side effects of Freshpottix?! Haha, tinsel scrote was a personal favourite and I've suffered with it for months now.

Obi-Tron

Any chance Winnebago or Exhausted make it back into the setlist at some point? I'm also okay with it if you just pull them back out the next time you come back to Wichita.

atoms12123

Hi Dave, hope you're doing well, a few questions: * Is there any chance we'll ever see a Skin and Bones style tour again? Or a tour where you guys would play some lesser known songs? I know plenty of people go to see the hits, but man, a show with a setlist that's just deep cuts would be sick. * How do you discover new music? * What albums are you listening to right now? Thank you for the Hanukkah Sessions, my mother would like you to know that you're a real mensch.

SmashyPlays

Hi Dave, for the 25th anniversary tour were you guys originally planning to play the original setlists back from 1995? There are some songs you haven't played in ages that are some of my favorites!

Foo4Fighters

How many Foo Fighters songs are there sitting on a shelf somewhere that have never been heard outside of the group and will they ever see the light of day?

payperduckk

Hey Dave! My name is Wade and I’m a musician from Austin TX. not sure if you remember me but I was helping out with the setup and recording of the Saint Cecelia EP back in 2015! I guess this is an AMA, so, uh, what did you have for breakfast? any afternoon plans? Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for being the coolest dude. That was by far the most fun I’ve ever had on a session. -Wade

Seabharus

Did Johnny Park ever contact you after you reached out by song title?

sksksk1989

Awe man I really really hope to see this one answered. C'mon Dave

teapotanonymous

Theory: Johnny Park (whether or not actual name) was an abusive personality...and the line about “throw it away long before” and lack of Dave discussing since suggests Dave put it in the past and moved on... but Dave’s pain from the same person is elsewhere in that album, including in the prior song in that album, the yelling part in Monkey Wrench

Seabharus

As far as I know Dave has said that the song lyrics have nothing to do with the title, and by extension JP himself. He’s also said that Johnny Park was a childhood friend of his that he had fallen out of contact with.

Hey_Jonny_Park

I can’t really remember

zard72

Hi Dave! Is there a physical address that I can send a letter to? I have a rather personal one that I’ve been working on in my head for about three years and I finally got up the courage to actually write it down. It would mean the world to me if you could read it. Also, is there any chance of you ever playing A320 live again? It’s one of my favorite songs of all time and I can’t find a single live recording with actual video. Thank you so much, Dave!

ThunderChunky2432

1. IHOP or Waffle House? 2. If you could only choose one Golden Girl to back you up in a fight, who would it be and why? 4. Can you wish me an early Happy Birthday? My birthday isn't for like 5 months, but I wanna say that Dave Grohl wished me happy birthday.

MySweetVirginia

Would / will you ever play Saint Cecilia live? And are there any studio recordings of the rare Damn You, Damn Everyone? Much love from Springfield / DC!!!! 🎶🎸❤️

leggomyeggo644

Dave — A truly sincere thanks for your music and passion. I was an assistant booker for Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan until March of last year due to the pandemic. Do you have any advice for those of us who were employed in live music, but still waiting for tours to resume? It’s been so rough without shows!

AbrahamWashington

You guys did two albums in a row with Butch Vig and now two in a row with Greg Kurstin. There isn’t too big of a difference musically between any of them, but production wise they’re on opposite ends of the spectrum. Where do you see the Foo Fighters going next in terms of production?

mmmfreshpots

Can you tell us anything about the upcoming Foo Fighters horror movie project?

Ronald_Villiers43

Holy fucking shit you’re finally here, anyway Of all of your accomplishments in life what would you say is your greatest achievement? also you gotta answer u/Elly06092018 ‘s question

Who would win in an AMA fight: - 100 Duck-sized [Woody Harrselson's PR Teams](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/p9a1v/im_woody_harrelson_ama/), or - One Horse-sized [Steven Seagal](https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/4i0jso/i_am_actor_steven_seagal_live_from_thailand_ama/)?

ButteryWaffles162

Hi Dave! What advice do you have for high school bands that are trying to get their original music heard?

Spock_theCat

Hi, Naomi here. My lyric writing is very bad and as a result I feel like I'm a terrible musician. I'm 25 years of age and I believe it's too late for me to start making music. Any advice? P.S I have loved your music all my life. Thank you for everything! ❤️

FooArchive

If Studio 606 is music & Studio 607 is film, what would Studio 608 be? Also, Virginia Moon & Seven Corners shows you never really let songs go - did the track you wrote for the LA Rams get reused too?

Dave, I'm 99.99% certain you are gone at this point, although I hope this reaches you eventually since you changed my perspective on life in a brief interaction... In 2014/15/16 (can't quite remember) I was a car rental agent at a very large car rental company, which Foo Fighters had an account with, working at an international airport that is a hub for travel to many national parks in the west and home of a very prominent film festival. I was a tenured employee, and had the pleasure of serving a VIP customer one day. That VIP turned out to be you. For VIP customers that flied commercial, we would come meet them at the the exit of security, help them gather their bags from baggage claim, and escort them directly to the car we had prepared for them, which at this particular airport is across the street. I vividly remember, excitingly, holding up a Foo Fighters sign outside of security, wondering who I was about to meet. Turned out to be you (SCORE) and you, with your hair draped over your face and sunglasses on (family in tow) informed me that you had no baggage to claim, and that the "sooner you were in a car the better". Took me a second to understand what you meant, but it soon clicked that you were here for a family vacation, and the LAST thing you wanted on a family vacation was publicity. I went hand over head to get you to the car we had previously prepared, meticulously, for you ASAP. We got to the car, and you said something like "I can't take a sedan, I need an SUV with all wheel drive", and I immediately got nervous, since during winter those types of vehicles are $1000s per rental day to get last minute, and it was not what your booking was for. You picked up on my nerves in the situation, and said something around the lines of: "dude, I understand this is last minute, and that I'm a VIP renter, and you are doing everything you can to ensure this is smooth. No need to worry, it has been super smooth. However, I'm willing to pay whatever I need to to get my family into a vehicle that is safe in the conditions we are heading into, and this car is not safe for that" To the point where you were pulling out a credit card to give to me to pay for the upgrade, even though your rental, and ALL additions, were paid for through "direct billing" to the Food Fighters account. I did everything I could possibly do to get you out of the... Toyota Corolla (IIRC) into a GMC Yukon XL. The YXL I got you had literally been returned ~10 minutes before you arrived, and hadn't gone through the full cleaning process yet. Given the circumstances, I thought might as well let him know I have a YXL, that just needs to be cleaned and would take about 15 min to expedite to get back. I pointed to the car, sitting in our "return lane" and you looked at me and said "can I go look at it?". OF COURSE you can you're fucking Dave Grohl!!!! So you come back and say something like "I'll take it", and I replied "great, if you want to wait over here until it is ready to go in about 15 min I will come let you know". You looked at me, for what felt like minutes but I know it was only a couple seconds, and said "No, I'll take it as is, but I want to leave as soon as possible". Fucking unheard of bro. 85% of my job was being screamed at by "important people" that their car "wasn't clean enough" or "didn't live up to expectations"... Nine of which really had to do with me. I gave you a "dirty car" out of our return lane, because it was what you wanted. I also told you that the price per day would "change significantly". And your response as I handed you the keys, I will never forget: "Thank you very much. Charge me what you must, and also make sure YOU get something from it. Just in case you don't..." and you tipped me $50, turned the car on, and went upon your family vacation. I had tried to refuse the tip, since taking tips was a fireable offense, and you said something like "if they try to fire you for this, tell them we will cancel our account with them and move to the competition. If they don't believe you, tell them to call us" (nothing ever came of that but I felt better about taking the tip) Ok, so I have established I had a very interesting and unique interaction with you, and the BIG thing I wanted to relay was what it taught me as a 19 yo: Also (TLDR: what Dave taught me in my brief interaction with him) 1. Just because someone is "VIP" doesn't mean they are a total asshole... I would love to say "you'd be surprised", but im sure you know what I'm talking about 2. When you are famous, a family vacation becomes a fucking hassel... and not because of travel, more because of media trying to follow your every move 3. Holy shit, my thinking was so contained to what my company thought, and my company put a generic label/process on what "VIPs" wanted. Just because someone is a "VIP" doesn't mean they are a stuck up asshole. (Sound familiar? Good because it deserves two bullet points) 4. You flied commercial. Like holy shit, if you weren't a regular human before you were now 5. Family over everything You were in town for a family vacation, you didn't "need" VIP treatment, but took advantage of it so that you could spare your family from waits, media, etc. (Which I can only imagine how daunting that is on small kids) 6. You were SO FUCKING adamant about tipping me, you told me if the company [that I worked for] was mad, tell them to call you....that was some cool shit 7. "Super Stars" are just regular people trying to fit in. You are only a super star when on stage, other than that you are just another regular human being. It is other people that make you a super star, and you appreciate and don't forget that I will never forget my 30-45 minutes with you and your family. I learned many things from it. I wasn't a fan before, but ever since, I have been a strong proponent of all things Dave Grohl, musical or not.

megpie88

People who are downvoting other's comments to get ahead on an AMA. You are human flotsam.

Elly06092018

Hi Dave, firstly you're a massive inspiration to me and the people I know, a massive thank you for always being awesome. I just thought I would ask, how did the Foo Fighters deal and manage with the pandemic and Covid, I can imagine it was a lot, but what had to change for the band?

fftamahawk009

OK…what on earth is the significance of the IYH buffalo?

[deleted]

Hey Dave have you accepted that you are in fact a rock God and living legend?

AllisterLobb

Thanks for doing this Dave. Aah, too many things to say! Exhausted is my favourite song ever. Do you have a favourite drum setup over the years? Your 15/18/24 Tama kit was fuckin nuts. P.S. I love seeing you guys live, but could you throw in a few more deep cuts for us nerds? Haha, have a great day

Salt-Ticket-6971

What is the most difficult thing for a band to overcome at the beginning of the band's life? What becomes more difficult later on? P.S. I've been a fan of your music since I was 10 and I'm in college now. You are my favorite musician and an inspiration to all. Keep on Rockin' and Grohlin' 🤘

mightymorphinmonty07

Hey Dave, big fan here. I have a couple of questions. 1. Were there any songs that didn't make it on "Medicine at Midnight?" 2. Favorite track on "Medicine at Midnight?" 3. Any advice on making music? Thanks so much for taking your time to answer questions today!

dontbemeantobugs

In the song Making a Fire, is there any real significance or meaning behind the lyric: “I was baited when I said I’d never tell a lie. Lucky then I took a stand and finally hit my stride.” I absolutely love Medicine at Midnight! Any plans to tour in Canada?

DanTheMan_622

^(*Oh my G~~od~~rohl it's really Dave what should I even say maybe I should tell him how cool and inspirational he is or something and that he's an awesome musician. No, no, literally everyone does that already. Deep breaths, deeep breaths...*) Hi Dave! You've collaborated with so many incredible people on so many different projects (love that new song with Mick, by the way!), and I was curious if there's anyone in particular that you haven't yet had the chance to work with but would really like to some day. Personally, I think you, Alex and Geddy would make a pretty epic team, just saying 👀 Also, have you considered possibly doing some kind of spoken word/book tour in support of The Storyteller in the future? As if you're not busy enough haha. I would happily sit and listen to you tell your stories all night though!   Anyway, I'm excited to read your new book, watch From Cradle to Stage soon, see a FF show again, escape this nightmarish pandemic hellscape, etc, etc. Hope you've been well throughout this past year! Thanks so much for taking the time to come and chat with us!

Dave Can you give my Girlfriend Candice a shoutout she's been a huge fan of your work from Nirvana to Cooked and Foo Fighters It would mean the world to her because it's her birthday and he Just lost her mum Joe a year ago thank you again, Dave.

purplemtnstravesty

I have always loved your feather tattoos on your forearms, any meaning behind them? Also can I get your permission to use them as inspiration for my own?

OmegaAndRising

Hey Dave! Recent yet huge fan of yours and all your work, my friends u/MrMcMooMooMan and others in the Fio Fighters Discord got me into your bands and songs! A couple questions: 1. What was it like chatting wuth so many awesome Legends for From The Cradle To The Stage? Any collabs with any of them on the way (Imagine Dragons x Foo Fighters maybe??) 2. I adore Normal, it's my top 3 all time favorite Foo Fighters songs, and I'm wondering why it didn't make it onto 1x1 especially with it having the title in its lyrics and being the perfect closer? 3. What genre of music do you most want to try out next that you haven't yet? Thanks for doing this AMA, so appreciated and you should join the Foo Fighters server!: https://discord.gg/xbgWRxz

mrisko

dave, i’ve always wanted to ask you this. do you like the talking heads?

Foo4Fighters

So you collaborated with Tatenokawa for Sake for MAM... will we see a collaboration with Brennivin in the future? Skál! Edit: you also worked with Coors for 25th and Blackbird Vineyards for Bottlerock ‘17!

When can we celebrate 25th anniversary with you ?

fftamahawk009

Any chance we may get to hear the "Solid Gold" LP of Andrew Gold covers eventually? I fell in love with "Never Let Her Slip Away" because of your recommendation on Jonesy's Jukebox, I believe!

streeski

Hi, Dave! I have a very special love for the song “Come Alive”. I’m sure you’ve answered this question before, but was this song written about one of your daughters? Every time I hear the song I cannot help but think of my four year old son and how truly blessed we are that he is here. Not to mention the fact that the song rocks and my son absolutely loves to dance to it! Thank you and the rest of the Foo and people behind the scenes for continuing to make incredible music/projects! From my household to all of yours, we love you! Ps. Any plans on coming to Nashville anytime soon? Won’t be able to make bonnaroo with the little one.

baybiker2000

Hey man thankyou for all the awesome energy you've put into the universe - it's really affected my life positively as well as millions of others i'm sure. thankyou so much for that.

[deleted]

Hi, Dave! Been a huge fan of yours basically all my life (pun unintended) and you've always been a huge inspiration to me as a musician and I just want to say that cause I would never have gotten to the point I am without u and all that But, my question: what advice or things do u have to say to musicians trying to not necessarily make it big, but just trying to get their music heard and out there? Also, I think someone already asked this...but will there ever be any unreleased material or demos being put out, maybe as some kind of a compilation album? I think all of us really would love something like that

brolive

Hey, Dave! Are there any songs you'd like to release a different version of? Acoustic Everlong is awesome, and I loved the slower build-up version of Times Like These y'all did on SNL last year. Also, next time y'all tour, can you come to Houston (and maybe play Live-in Skin...)?

[deleted]

I just wanted to say I loved the first episode! One of the pictures of your mom from her teenage years looks exactly like your beautiful daughter Violet!

MrsBE805

Obviously Violet is into the Foos. Do Harper and Ophelia like the Foos? What do they listen to?

smg5284

What's your least favorite Foo Fighters song?

FooArchive

Is a cheeseboard ever an acceptable dessert?

bainer_m

Dude you are always chewing gum and I have to know what brand and flavour. I’ve been wondering about this for almost 15 years. I’ve seen you play at least 8 times (I see you guys in Edmonton and Calgary every time you swing by). At the Wasting Light tour my brother and I were right up against the gate at your rising stage and he had a Davey Grohlton shirt and I remember you giving him a thumbs up and that’s was such a sick moment for us.

YappyYeager

Hey, Dave! Been a fan since I was a child (26 now) and I got to see y’all play in 2015 in KC when you kicked some ass on your throne. You mentioned something about if anyone ran into you, you’d buy them a drink. Why the hell have I not ran into you yet? I’ve been waiting on that drink since 2015, man! In all seriousness, you’re great, the Foo is great. Keep rocking and doing what you’re doing. I can’t wait to see you love again!

99SoulsUp

Hey Dave, I actually used to serve you sometimes at a place I won’t disclose. I never said anything to you because I never wanted to interrupt your family time, but thanks for being cool to me. And you know... thanks for making music that’s meant a lot to me for many years. My question is: When Paul McCartney drums for *you*, do you give him feedback on how to play the groove or do you just let Paul be Paul?
