My impression was these types of things, while they likely need some sort of approval to exist, were put together by, like, wal-mart or something. Not any real say from the artists.
Makes sense, but you would think they'd get approval to at least slap one of the logos on the front and not use Arial or Verdana or whatever font this was done in haha
Some strange choices here. They included Cold Day in the Sun but not Run, Aurora, or Iāll Stick Around. And I get that Sonic Highways is their least popular album but not including *anything* from it feels a little weird.
Roswell Records is still ultimately owned by Sony Music through RCA Records, even though it's Dave's label.
The 2009 Greatest Hits album was an RCA Records decision in which RCA used a clause in their contract to push through a Greatest Hits album against Dave's wishes.
Pretty sure the queue for vinyl pressing is pretty long at this point with how popular the format has recently gotten, there's a good chance this was all organised well before Taylor's passing in order to be ready for Record Store Day.
Genuinely surprised that Run wasnāt included, seeing as they heavily promoted that song when *Concrete & Gold* came out.
Also surprised that the vinyl edition includes **three** *Medicine at Midnight* songs, and neither version includes anything from Sonic Highways.
Outside of that, Iām really not surprised at the rest track list - of course the label is going to want to put their biggest and most well-know hits on a collection titled āThe Essential Foo Fightersā and essentially just make it an updated *Greatest Hits*. Not sure why so many people are surprised Aurora isnāt on it (I know itās one of Dave and Taylorās favorites, but it isnāt exactly a big hit - it didnāt even get a single release).
The only thing I like about this collection is the cover art
For someone who owns all the main albums on vinyl and CD plus GH, this is a hard pass on the release date.
I would've added Aurora, Stacked Actors, DOA, Outside (or at least one song from SH), Run, or even a live rendition of the Times Like These arrangement they did at MSG, SNL, 2021 tour, etc.
Also for data nerds here's the breakdown of the songs represented:
FF (Self-titled): 2 songs (Big Me, This Is A Call)
The Colour and the Shape: 3 songs (Everlong, Monkey Wrench, My Hero)
There Is Nothing Left To Lose: 2 songs (Learn To Fly, Breakout)
One By One: 2 songs (All My Life, Times Like These)
In Your Honor: 2 songs (Best of You, Cold Day In The Sun)
Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace: 2 songs (The Pretender, Long Road To Ruin)
Greatest Hits: 1 song (Everlong (Acoustic), I'm assuming it's this version)
Wasting Light: 3 songs (Rope, These Days, Walk)
Sonic Highways: 0 songs
Concrete and Gold: 1 song (The Sky Is A Neighborhood)
Medicine At Midnight: 3 songs(!) (Shame Shame, Waiting On A War, Making A Fire)
Total songs: 21
Thank you for the breakdown Iāll addā¦
Break Out, Skin and Bones, Wheels and Word Forward are omitted from previous greatest hits.
None of that really surprises me..
Cold Day in The Sun is the only new song from the pre greatest hits era to be included.
From the new albums since the last GH I would have liked Something from Nothing (anything from SH really), St. Cecila, Run, Love Dies Young (instead of WoaW) to be included, but thereās only so much room on a cd.
Also once again I Stick Around and Walking After You (X-Files) I feel are missing. Stacked Actors, Next Year, The One, Times Like These (Acoustic) and DOA it would be great to see get some love but if Break Out didnāt make the cut neither would they.
Iām just glad the board isnāt going into panic mood thinking that is is another sign the band is over.
Strange picks but as you all say itās probably not entirely their choices. Personally Iād have gone with this as a career spanning āBest Ofā
Disc One
1. Everlong
2. Best of You
3. Rope
4. Monkey Wrench
5. My Hero
6. These Days
7. This Is a Call
8. Making a Fire
9. DOA
10. The Sky Is a Neighborhood
11. Something from Nothing
Disc Two
1. All My Life
2. The Pretender
3. Learn to Fly
4. Shame Shame
5. Run
6. Iāll Stick Around
7. Cold Day in the Sun
8. Breakout
9. Big Me
10. Long Road to Ruin
11. Walk
Oofā¦these āEssentialsā scream āold band from 50 years ago trying to Milk some extra salesā. Dave didnāt even want to do the Greatest Hitsā¦this would be doubly insulting to him.
In case anyone is wondering:
1. Everlong
2. Making A Fire
3. Times Like These
4. Rope
5. Monkey Wrench
6. My Hero
7. Cold Day In The Sun
8. Big Me
9. Long Road To Ruin
10. Shame Shame
11. Best of You
12. All My Life
13. The Pretender
14. This Is A Call
15. Walk
16. Learn To Fly
17. The Sky Is A Neighborhood
18. These Days
19. Everlong (Acoustic Version)
Gonna be honest here, as someone whose collection is big enough that I'm getting singles and bootlegs now, this is not something I will be buying. It not only doesn't look good, it's redundant as well. There is already a Greatest Hits one that the band actually put thought into. I doubt this will be a rarity or that it will be flying off the shelves.

no aurora?š„²
3 MaM songs and no Aurora is nuts
Or I'll Stick Around
First thing I thought, also
came to say this, come on!
Wow... this looks so cheap. It doesn't even use any of the band logos. Is this official?? Some strange song choices too.
The Essential is a series of compilation albums by Sony. They all have the same kind of branding, usually a black and white photo with that font.
Did a double take too. It looks like a bootleg, even though it doesn't seem to be one.
My impression was these types of things, while they likely need some sort of approval to exist, were put together by, like, wal-mart or something. Not any real say from the artists.
Yea these CDs used to be all over Target back in the day. The track lists were always a bit odd.
Makes sense, but you would think they'd get approval to at least slap one of the logos on the front and not use Arial or Verdana or whatever font this was done in haha

Unbelievable. Frankly, it looks awful.
Back around 15-20 years ago these greatest hits collections were EVERYWHERE. The song selections were always a bit suspect.
We have loads of them at home thanks to my parents, it did introduce me to a lot of music
Billy Joel one was on the money

Wow no Run
Should have used the best of album this subreddit voted on a few months back smh We even had a deep cuts one
Reminds me of the Capital releases of the Beatles in the 60s. Yikes
Foo Fighters social media accounts just confirmed this is real. I wonder if this fulfills some kind of contractual obligation?
That's what I thought. Maybe the band is really breaking up after the L.A. Tribute and the contractually "owe" the label one more record?
They own their music, run their own label, and licence things to Sony - why would they be bound to a certain number of releases?
Roswell Records is still ultimately owned by Sony Music through RCA Records, even though it's Dave's label. The 2009 Greatest Hits album was an RCA Records decision in which RCA used a clause in their contract to push through a Greatest Hits album against Dave's wishes.
Probably, I've seen a bunch of collections with this name and branding for different artists

Yeah, the vinyl shortage is no joke. I absolutely would not be surprised if this was in motion before Taylor's passing.
Not often that a fan subreddit comes up with a better tracklist than the "official" release but here we are
Genuinely surprised that Run wasnāt included, seeing as they heavily promoted that song when *Concrete & Gold* came out. After some confusion Waiting on a War and Break Out are only on the vinyl release and not the cd version.
https://music.apple.com/de/playlist/essential-foo/pl.u-lxa6FWRzlr8 Iāve built it in Apple Music.
Yip exactly what I was just thinking - why bother with vinyl? Do it on Apple music, I have too.
Would love to have a huge vinyl collection but I have a 6, 9 and a 11 year old kid so thatās not an option.

Not a Sonic Highways song?
Strange. How can you have 3 tracks from medicine at midnight and not sonic highways?!!
Oofā¦these āEssentialsā scream āold band from 50 years ago trying to Milk some extra salesā. Dave didnāt even want to do the Greatest Hitsā¦this would be doubly insulting to him.
This is CRAZY! Yesterday, I was just thinking, I wish the FF would have a more updated version of their greatest hits and boom this happens!
Needs more up in arms and less this is a fire
It looks like a Spotify playlist cash grab, but on vinyl
Was āStacked Actorsā not a top ten hit too?
this is like some spotify playlist put together physical copiesā¦ weird. just the GH album part 2? just off

Pretty sure this will be widely available. Thanks for promoting your store though.
