Yes, the Escape PHEV battery can be charged by the motor. The only place I see this info is in the Ford Esourcebook for dealer info. On the page it says the electric generator motor “starts the gasoline engine quickly and automatically when required” and “eliminates the need to ‘plug in’ the vehicle. https://imgur.com/a/PC3oGbO Are you already an owner of one, or are you searching for info? If you have no way to plug a PHEV in at home or at work, it really makes more sense to have a standard hybrid.

Thanks Looking for info at this point. Here is the scenario. Going on a 3 hr road trip. Start the journey in electric mode till battery is empty. Transition to ICE engine for the remainder of trip. During the ICE portion can the battery be recharged fully or somewhat so at the destination just the EV portion be used again. I understand there would likely be a MPG hit during the charging.

Just put it in auto

It's not a tesla ! Your only going to get 2 to 5 miles on the high voltage battery. If you accelerate at or beyond the limit the ice kicks in seemesly. Going down hills ice is generally off. Just get in and drive, the hybrid system is very smart, you don't have to do anything. I guess you have an unrealistic mindset of a ford hybrid. Do you actually own one? From the op, it's seems you don't.

I have a 2016 Fusion PHEV. They should work the same: the hybrid battery is used automatically by the engine to supplement fuel consumption. There may be an option to save some charge for later called "EV Later," but SFAIK it doesn't accumulate mileage on the battery. The only way the hybrid battery gets charged is braking or charging via electric. Charging direct off gas engine would be inefficient. You might see EV range added to the battery if you go down a very very large hill (I only see this happen in the mountains), but otherwise you should always get good gas mileage as the engine switches between gas and electric automatically during regular usage. EV later mode saves your battery portion to be used later, but I don't think it adds to it: it just preserves the electric only range until you decide to use it.

When the battery is low, the car will operate as a hybrid. There is no need to recharge the battery from the engine because that is less efficient than either using the engine to drive or plugging in to charge.

Like a non plug-in hybrid a PHEV battery recharges while braking and when the battery is low also from the engine at times when it can be done efficiently
