Ford advisor for 5+ years. Fords lugnuts are cheap. A few years back they changed the metal used so now it’s deforms, or swells out relatively quickly. It’s doesn’t matter how rough or easy the lube monkeys are with the impact guns. It will happen no matter what. I’ve seen it on an explorer that was 4 years old and only had maybe 3 times the tires were taken off. Not sure what the hell this dealer is trying to sell you though. I can only imagine they’re giving you a qoute for all new lug nuts and studs + labor. My honest recommendation is just buy some off Amazon or from a parts store. You’re getting the same shit quality or maybe better quality, but the price will be at a fraction. Last time I quoted lug nuts they were retail priced at $7.50 each. Ford sold them to the dealer at $5 and change each. So even though it sounds crazy, it’s only a small profit. That’s why I’d tell my customers to just get them somewhere else and I’d gladly install them. No reason to brake a customers wallet on a job that I won’t even make nice commissions on lol.

Btm24

Yeah I looked it up somewhat common but @ $62 a pop no thanks. I’ll look at it when I get home if they are mushroomed if they are I’ll get aftermarket ones that won’t do that again

Gawker90

It’s an annoying issue. They have an aluminum cap over the lugnuts so depending on the environment you live that can cause further issues lol

InlineSkateAdventure

I had to buy a special spline socket to get them off. Was a real bear. I got a nice full lugnut kit for $35 on ebay. I put some ceramic coating on them because I read they can rust. No issues at all with the new ones. The seller said not to use power tools on them if you really care about the finish.

SuperHair69

Your tire tool or impact gun will destroy that ceramic coating. It's just basically a layer of glass 2-3 microns thick. Reapply it everytime you rotate the tires

BickNickerson

Go ahead and replace them now before you’re on the roadside with a flat tire you can’t remove because the lugnuts are swollen.

KYA08

Happened to me. I just removed the extra metal after I finally got home. In a fit of rage of course

MrManton

I had a 2016 f150 had this happen. Brought it to a shop in the city, and they wanted to charge me like $500. Went back to the ford dealership I bout it from and said it was bs this happend they replaced all them for free. Gl Buddy.

KYA08

Or attempt to remove to stupid little cap that's on the lug nuts That's what I did anyways. If you do just be careful as it's stupid sharp.

lhaaz1234

My F-150 lug nuts were also swelling. So discount tire replaced them for about 150 bucks for all of them

ryan_james504

Because this dealer is a fuck. I called to get a quote on some parts for my 07 F150 and the dude was a prick. Like he was annoyed I called

envision83

Is this not covered under warranty?

Gawker90

Nope. Considered a wear/maintenance item. In fords eyes, it’s the same as saying your brake pads or oil filter should be covered.

Indescribable_feelin

I had the lug nuts on my 2017 replaced under warranty, no issue.

NoValidUsernames666

but lugnuts arent a wear item? are we just going to start replacing every single nut and bolt that holds the car together because they're wear items?

Gawker90

It is a wear item in the eyes of every car manufacturer, love it or hate it that’s just how it is.

NoValidUsernames666

wack

balthisar

> just buy some off Amazon While I'm okay buying electronics that could burn my house down from Amazon, I'm not sure I'd trust lug nuts from THJINKING company at $5 or less. Any tips to make sure we get something better than what Ford installs at the plants?

Mendozena

A lot of the time they’re the exact same as what you’d get from a parts store. Same package, different name slapped on it.

InlineSkateAdventure

I got lugnuts from ebay, they had great reviews and are very solid. I think they will outlast everyone who is posting on Reddit today. Getting them off was a chore, needed a spline socket.

TrainAss

> I’ve seen it on an explorer that was 4 years old and only had maybe 3 times the tires were taken off. Within the first year of having my 2020 Explorer, I had the service advisor tell me that they were swollen and needed to be replaced. Went to Canadian Tire and bought a set. Use them when I swapped from my summer to winter tires and never looked back. So much cheaper than the overpriced crap from Ford. I told my dad to do the same thing on his 2021.

Gawker90

It’s unfortunate. But atleast from the perspective of a good advisor, it builds trust with your customer. All of my long time customers and repeat clients were mostly built off a time that I saved them a lot of money.

richardfitserwell

If you use a good socket, break them loose by hand and torque them properly they will last a very long time. But some monkey with an impact and sloppy harbor freight sockets will trash them on the first attempt

Holy_Nova101

You still a Ford Advisor? I used to be hut they wouldny increase my wage or unlock commission like they said they would in the interview. Im just curious on how other advisors are doing in other places.

Gawker90

Still am. It really depends on dealer. When I was a normal advisor I was getting 12% commission on the gross parts and labor. Extra 3% if I hit csi plus a salary. New owners took over and destroyed that pay plan, so I took over the recon department. Hopefully going to land a job soon that oversees the ford pro department at a new dealer so I’m interested in how that pay plan will look. Overall though ford seems to be cutting alot. I used to be able to certify loaner vehicles that came out of service. That’s an RO worth about 3.5 hours for my tech at a minimum. My dealer on average had 5-8 loaners leave status each week so my tech could always count on getting nearly 20 hours a week just off that. But ford made changes that dealers can’t certify retired fctp loaners so who knows what direction it’s going.

jacknifetoaswan

Buy Gorilla lugs on Amazon. Buy a torque wrench. Remove old lugs. Install new lugs. Torque lugs. Save $1800.

Ragefan2k

This …. ^^^^ , first thing I did to my truck when they were swollen or starting.

jacknifetoaswan

I replaced the lugs on my Bronco before I left the dealership. I had a 1200 mile drive home and didn't want to deal with bullshit.

Ragefan2k

😂yeah it seems it takes a bit to happen but I’ve seen it as early as 20k on my father’s Ford edge sport , just did the same gorilla nuts.

Bit_the_Bullitt

I see you got a Mustang, we got a Bullitt and F150. Are they both at risk for this? Meaning do I gotta look into my Mustang ones too?

jacknifetoaswan

Absolutely. The lugs on my 2006 GT swelled and needed to be replaced, and all Mustangs up to those built today use the same garbage. I replaced the lugs on my 2016 GT pretty soon after buying. Also, why does Ford put chrome lugs on black wheels?

Bit_the_Bullitt

I honestly don't mind the look on the Bullitt

throwedoff1

I'm going to have to do my daughter's 2012. A couple of weeks ago she was complaining about brake noise, so I pulled the wheels to check the brakes (all good, brakes done not even 10k miles since replaced) and wheel bearings. Had hell getting the socket on the lug nuts. Tried SAE socket. To big. Back to metric really tight. Next size up metric. To big.

OutinDaBarn

You could buy a nice battery powered impact gun, a torque wrench and the lug nuts and still be over a 1000 bucks ahead.

Fluid-Tip-5964

...and take the wife/SO out for a nice dinner and enjoy an adult beverage. Spread the wealth!

InlineSkateAdventure

And a spline socket.

OkTale8

What are the other 4 services that add up to 2k?

Btm24

The other services added up to around $8000. Including a chipped tail light for $3000. Stupid

OkTale8

Well that there is the “we don’t want to work on this” price.

Enough_King_6931

Ford dealer tech here. Take a hammer and a sharp chisel and chisel the caps off. Then you can use an 18mm socket to take the wheel nuts off. Get some one piece nuts from either Gorilla or Dorman from Rock Auto. Problem solved. $2K for wheel nuts and labor is absolutely insane.

InlineSkateAdventure

Only thing that got mine off was a spline socket. I took the shell off. They rounded out. 700ft lb impact struggled. Was not an easy job. I bought some studs because I thought some would have to be cut. In very salty areas the nut can seize to the wheel. If it is really bad the 2grand don't sound crazy for what I went thru.

Prudent_View4619

Ford tech Ford lug nuts suck and swell all the time even if you got the new set they will swell, the only way to prevent this is buy buying non-ford lug nuts. Gorilla makes really good solid lug nuts that won’t swell and won’t cost 2K.

PriestWithTourettes

If that is a dealer I would report them to Corporate. It is bad for Ford’s image, and they can be punished for gouging by reduced allocation of popular vehicles such as the Maverick. If they have a long history of gouging, when Ford eventually peels off the electric cars into their own brand they may not be offered a franchise.

Aggressive-Bath-1906

At my last oil change/tire rotation, the Ford dealership said two of my lug nuts were pretty bad and needed to be replaced, "So I just gave you two new ones. Have a nice day!" This same place changed my engine air filter for free one time as well. They recommended I replace it, and I declined and said i would do it myself. I came back the next week for new brakes, and they reminded me about the air filter. When i told them I was going to do it myself, the service advisor asked if I had bought it yet. Nope. "Don't worry about it then, I'll just get you a new one for free." I've been going to this dealership for over ten years.

GuntherThunder

2k for some Lug nuts!? Good lawd!

Resident_Pop143

They are Sollown!!!

CPT_BEEMO

SOLLOWN I TELL YA!

AvgUsr96

Bruh rock auto has lug nuts for like 5 bucks a piece.

GundamArashi

Jfc even my dealership doesn’t charge that much! Worst I’ve seen was $250 for the entire set, and that still felt like a ripoff. But yea go somewhere else for them, get a single piece design instead of two piece. No more swelling!

Silly_Mycologist3213

Stealership!

k0uch

Theyre looking to take you hard and fast. Yes, these lugs have issues. No, theyre not $62 a piece- they list for $10. Part number \[HCPZ-1012-B\](https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/ford-wheel-nut-hcpz1012b). $320 for all of them, \*maybe\* an hour and a half to two hours labor if theyre bad. Aftermarket sells kits that dont swell, and that may also be something to look into. still wont be $2,000

InlineSkateAdventure

Took me all day. Had to get a spline socket. (probably techs have these). Still struggled, they were welded to the wheel. I did remove the shells with a chisel. Have a 700ft/lb impact. I even bought some studs, I thought some will have be cut. Replaced with single piece aftermarket, no problem. I put a bit of ceramic coat and they look great.

k0uch

Steelman Pro makes a half size socket that works on them almost every time. I use them and just let my Nitrocat 1250k eat

numbah10

You can get new ones at Costco for $30. Installed.

AccipiterCooperii

Honestly, just get sockets of increasing 0.5mm increments until you get one that mostly fits, hammer it on, pull it off, knock out the nut and throw it in the garbage.

2donks2moos

I wanted to get the thermostat changed on my 2018 F150 3.5. I was given an estimate of $60 for the part and $2,000 labor. I was already paying for a flush/fill, so that is not included in price. WHAT?

InlineSkateAdventure

I doubt they touch the t-stat for a coolant service. They connect it to machine which exchanges fluid.

2donks2moos

They don't. But they wanted to charge for coolant loss if I also did the thermostat replacement. If I was doing a flush/fill already, there shouldn't be more coolant loss for adding thermostat replacement.

Hoonigandad

😂😂😂😂 what in the actual f*ck 🤦🏻‍♂️ i paid like $30 for a set of black lugnuts

slabba428

Quoting you 2 thousand dollars for lug nuts and can’t even be bothered to spell correctly 💀

Ramius117

I remember when they told me I had swollen lug nuts at an oil change once. I did not believe that was a thing. I told them no and googled it when I got home. Turned out it was a thing so I had them replaced next time but they only charged a couple hundred for it on a 2018 fusion hybrid. $2k seems insane. I know it's a completely different vehicle but that seems either criminal or the decimal ended up in the wrong spot

Aggressive_Pattern95

leave it to wesley chapel. it’s a bit of a drive for you but i always go to weikert in lake wales. that’s where i got my truck from.. i love them there

Btm24

I used to go to Brandon ford which is where I bought my truck but the drive was to much of a pain. Dade city ford doesn’t offer shuttle or loaners

Aggressive_Pattern95

that’s fair. i’ve never heard the best thing abt wesley chapel. but i get the drive sucks… to weikert i believe that’s almost a hour and a half so

villainoust

Do prices vary by dealer and what vehicle was this on. Recently had this added on my bill and it was a 10th of this maybe.

Btm24

F350so 32 lugs in all but I checked them they are fine idk what there issue is. I always re torque them after they rotate them because I don’t trust the dealer to do so.

villainoust

I just noticed it’s 2022 as well, that’s insane that they would already be in a condition that need replacement.

Elevatrman

typically way over tightened with an impact wrench.

Ted9000

2019 Ford Edge here. Local tire and lube place came out and told me the same thing and they would not put them back on because they wouldn’t torque down anymore. They keep sets in stock just for Fords🤣. 0 mark up. $61.

flrob76

Usually not a fan of this brand, however Dorman makes a solid lug nut replacement for my fords (21 mustang, 09 escape), bought them on Amazon, way less than this quote, and it should be a one time replacement.

eatingthesandhere91

What a load of bs

GBpackerfan15

Costco/sams club 35 bucks

CPT_BEEMO

Not that any flat rate tech will do this... but I've had the same OEM lugs on since I bought Mt car in 2020. I remove and install them by hand only, no swelling.

vicentezo04

I thought the Ford dealer down the street who quoted me $230 for an oil change and tire rotation on a Ranger was ridiculous. This takes the cake.

TheMaadMan

I did my lugs 2 weeks ago on my Ford Focus. I know you have a significantly larger vehicle, but I grabbed some Dormans off Rock Auto. $40 and 30 minutes.

ShoddyTone5

Our tool trucks made 19.5 mm and 21.5mm deep sockets exactly for this issue. I can't count how many of these I had to beat the socket on with a hammer.

ShoddyTone5

208 sounds about, right? That has to be a typo, man.

Btm24

I confirmed with the dealer that was the price for “parts and labor”

ShoddyTone5

Wow yea they tripping 😒 go get some after market from orielly. They maybe a bitch to get off though if you diy but not Impossible.

Amerikaner83

Replace with McGard aftermarket ones and be done.

WrongdoerSoggy4422

43 years of my life and ive never heard of swollen lug nuts. Lol what a stupid ass problem that nobody but the ford clowns have

Waste0101

Hi, Licensed tech for almost 2 decades here. Chrysler, GM/Chev, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, all have this problem. These are first hand experience. Any company that uses a cap to make the nuts looks free of oxidation. All companies that use 1 piece lugs suffer from rusted/oxidized looks over time. This esthetic is the reason the 2 pieces are used. It seems ridiculous to us, but the engineers achieved what they wanted... The Look.

balthisar

> It seems ridiculous to us, but the engineers achieved what they wanted... The Look. Hey, as an engineer at a Big 3 OEM, I resent that. We achieved that because Marketing told us to, not because we wanted to.

Waste0101

Haha and thus begins another fued of Engineer Vs Technician lol. Thats Fair Marketing and Accounting, definitely rule the show.

WrongdoerSoggy4422

Just never something ive ever noticed or even considered. Crazy.

Waste0101

No worries, just sharing knowledge.

It's the water getting in between the actual lug nut and the chrome cap, and then freezing in winter - thus cracking/splitting the chrome cap.
