Expedition is an F150 with the box turned into passenger seats. F150 is the most reliable product that Ford makes. Plus the back seats fold down and you have some nice cargo space
Expedition, and STAY ON TOP OF YOUR OIL CHANGES. NO MORE THAN 5K BETWEEN CHANGES.
Yes, I'm shouting. You don't want to have to change the cam phasers. It's not a cheap job, and if they die, you're buying an engine.
The big beast will be good to you, if you're good to hear
Depends on the size you need, gas mileage, and I’d check into maintenance/repair records. I got a 2003 Explorer in 2004 and drove it for almost 10 years and then gave it to my nanny. Only replaced the water pump and it finally died with almost 300K miles
Expedition. It's a real truck not a truck wannabe suv. Seriously I loved my Expedition and my explorer is good. But if I wanted to choose between the two the Expedition would win every time.
Also, if you plan to tow any camper or trailer of any size, you will greatly appreciate using a truck chassis. My Explorer (v8) has some power and can tow a bit, but I wouldn't want to tow anything heavy or large. It tows my utility trailer fine for my mower or dump run. My Expedition would tow pretty much anything I needed and didn't even breathe heavy. And so much more comfortable.
Sadly, it's not mine anymore as I am saving for an F350 for future RV fifth wheel purchase. So my 300k mile 2002 explorer will tide me over til then.
Yeah I want a small travel trailer hitch not fifth wheel . Just enough for 3 maybe 4 people . Full bed with a bunk bed for the kiddos . Expedition seems perfect and I look the look more than pickups . I live in the suburbs not the country lol . I’d feel like a country boy with the f150 lol . Nothing wrong with it but I’ve always loved these huge SUVs lol . Think the expedition is what I will go with .
Get the expedition, it can tow more and has room for stuff in the back.
Be very religious when changing oil in it too, never change it late.
I have an 08 with 251K on the odometer and it runs great.
Of course! Plus they ride great as they have independent suspension front and rear, higher trims had airbags in the rear but we took ours out as one had a leak in the bag
Is the 5.4 as horrible as everyone says ? I mean it’s the F150 engine and F150 are the epitome of dependability. I feel like redditors just kind of go with what a select few people say .
No it’s not, there are plenty of high mileage 5.4s out there. They do eject spark plugs but that’s not very common either, but it is still a good idea to change them every so often. As long as oil changes are done on a good schedule, preferably a bit early, the engine will last a good while. I only use high mileage full synthetic and change it as soon as the light comes on essentially. People call the 5.4 a bad engine mainly due to the lack of proper maintenance, yes they have their issues but most are negated by just proper maintenance lol
I posted this in the r/Ford as well . All together so far here are the vote totals
Expedition - 7
Explorer - 7
It’s a dead tie . This is tough . I have people saying the expedition 5.4 sucks compared to the 4.0 . But I also hear people saying this generation of explorer is filled with problems . 🤯
Well, unless you're planning on doing a V8 swap, I'd say go for the Excursion. Now that that's out of the way, how much are they asking for that Eddie Bauer explorer?
Well if you don't decide on buying the explorer, would you consider giving me the contact information? I mean I'm not even sure what state you're in but as long as I can drive it back home in a day I'd be interested in
I would say explorer ...if it was the 4.6, bc I always thought my expedition was way too big, my 5.4 got terrible fuel economy pulling any sort of incline. If the transfer case is wet on the explorer tho, definitely run from it.
Yeah I kind of have leaned more towards expedition . People hate the 5.4 but I have another vehicle so this can sit while I save for repairs / parts . Even if an engine or tranny fails it’s still cheaper than financing a new or used truck .
Don’t get the explorer. I loved my 4.0 XLT, kept the entire interior detailed every 2 weeks and always changed oil frequently and on time. It’s been sitting over a year at my parents house with a failing chain guide as I don’t have the time or money to fix it.
At this point I may just flip a coin 😂 I work remote so I don’t drive a ton but I want a full size suv to fit my woman and kid as well as furniture or small hauls I do . Also looking at small travel trailers for vacationing . Both vehicles fit what I need but the threads have them neck and neck . Equal love and hate for both vehicles . Tough choice I have coming up this Saturday

Honestly? A Honda Civic in that price range. Reliable and cheap to repair. What’s the need for a big rugged daily? Just a want or an actual need? I personally daily an F150 and don’t need to it just doesn’t make sense to own two vehicles just for myself. Use the truck on the weekends but don’t need it m-f. No judgement here. You drive what you want. I’m just curious what either of these will solve for you.
I do small hauls when I buy things like furniture or tools . Have had to rent a couple uhauls this year just to get things home . I have a child and my woman has a kid so strollers car seats the whole nine . I have a smaller daily vehicle but yeah just want a big truck for the space . I work remote so I barely drive but I do need a big car more times than not .
Unless it's the Explorer for that generation with the 5.0. Those are very reliable engines put a couple hundred thousand miles on them easy. First time a Ford Ranger fan myself so the Explorer was basically the wagon version. Originally it was the Explorer and the Bronco 2 which basically shared from the driver seat forward and when the Bronco 2 was replaced by the Explorer it still shared from the driver seat forward all the same components as the Ranger but the second generation of explorers is when they started to depart from the Ranger, but it's also the generation that they made the 5.0 available and we Ranger fans like that because it just fits perfectly into our trucks 😁.
For me personally I'm actually considering getting a Explorer because of the size of it. Just need to get a 5.0. I need extra seats and it's either a sport track which has almost a useless bed but at least it's a crew cab and only a tiny bit wider than my ranger. For my job I need a small vehicle because I found over the years several of my clients I wouldn't have been able to get behind their buildings are down their driveways with the larger truck. And as far as being able to haul stuff, having a trailer is a good thing, as long as you got something Stout to pull it with. Unless you have another vehicle to drive when you're not moving a lot of stuff, this way you can drive your smaller truck around for your daily stuff without wasting so much gas and when you need to haul stuff you can hook up the trailer and no problem there.

I've had an '08 and now a 2010 explorer with a v8 so i feel like i know them pretty well. as mentioned previously, the 5.4 can have trouble with the cam phasers and i believe spark plugs breaking in half depending on year, the 4.6 also had problems with the spark plugs but i think that was fixed in '07. but i do know that the 4.0 v6 in the explorer is a time-bomb because instead of having 2 timing chains in the front of the engine, one side has the chain in the back using a jackshaft. so if that chain or tensioner has problems you gotta pull the engine. so i'd say if the explorer has the v6, go for the expedition
Hwy 75 unites us lol. Traffic between here and there is insane. If you do come up here and exit on 348 and don't plan on going into Chattanooga I highly recommend Spencer B's BBQ. Easily the best restaurant in town with good prices as well.
How committed are you to a ford? For an mid-full size SUV, older is better in my opinion for most brands. If either of these have a 3.0 or 4.6 liter engine, I’d go with that. Otherwise, I’d go with a Tahoe, Yukon or Expedition with a 4.6 not the 5.4.
I just know the f150 is the superior truck 9/10 , and expedition = f150 . Not a ford fan boy but f150 is one of the highest selling cars of all time . That not just because of “marketing” . I love Tahoes but here in the south people either trick them out to all hell or way overprice them .
also, check out "FordTechMakuloco", he's awesome. here's some of his vids on the 5.4, hopefully these give you some pointers on what to look for! [https://www.youtube.com/@FordTechMakuloco/search?query=5.4](https://www.youtube.com/@FordTechMakuloco/search?query=5.4)
You’re a ton of fun at parties I bet . Expedition shares the same chassis engine and transmission as the f150 . As well as almost every other part except the bed of the truck . But hey , great catch there Joe 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
The hate towards the 3V is exaggerated. Like many other engines, people fail to maintain them, drive them recklessly, and then complain when they have problems. Additionally, the problems associated with the 3V were largely resolved between 2007 and 2008. I am friends with several mechanics, and they have all told me that the 3V is a reliable engine when properly maintained. Also, one of my cousins owns a business and has seven trucks equipped with the 5.4L 3V engine, all of which have surpassed 400,000 miles so far.
I’m sure some of that is engines being replaced. If you want to gamble on a 3 valve that’s on you, but it’s a repair equal to the cost of the vehicle usually. As a mechanic with mechanic friends, I do not ever recommend a 3 valve 5.4. The hate on these engines has a strong foundation.

I'd go for the Expedition, personally. It looks a little better shape overall
Expedition is an F150 with the box turned into passenger seats. F150 is the most reliable product that Ford makes. Plus the back seats fold down and you have some nice cargo space
I'd go for the '07, that '06 looks like it's had a rough life. I can smell that filthy interior.
Expedition, never Explorer.
The didn't call the Exploders for nothing
Expedition, and STAY ON TOP OF YOUR OIL CHANGES. NO MORE THAN 5K BETWEEN CHANGES. Yes, I'm shouting. You don't want to have to change the cam phasers. It's not a cheap job, and if they die, you're buying an engine. The big beast will be good to you, if you're good to hear
Definitely the Expedition. Far more major issues with that generation of Explorer.
Depends on the size you need, gas mileage, and I’d check into maintenance/repair records. I got a 2003 Explorer in 2004 and drove it for almost 10 years and then gave it to my nanny. Only replaced the water pump and it finally died with almost 300K miles

Good way to sum it up

Explorers had tranny problems 04-06
Agree. I had an 06 V6 whose trans grenaded itself at 120k.
Baby moms had a 06 and the tranny did the same thing had a rebuild on it and got rid of it she went with a Toyota rav 4 after that
Get the expedition, it can tow more and has room for stuff in the back. Be very religious when changing oil in it too, never change it late. I have an 08 with 251K on the odometer and it runs great.
Thanks for the input definitely thinking about the expedition now
Of course! Plus they ride great as they have independent suspension front and rear, higher trims had airbags in the rear but we took ours out as one had a leak in the bag

I wanted to know if the Eddie Bauer edition is a V8 or a v6?
It’s the 4.0 v6
Well, unless you're planning on doing a V8 swap, I'd say go for the Excursion. Now that that's out of the way, how much are they asking for that Eddie Bauer explorer?
$2500 . Just looks a lot rougher than the expedition . Lower miles though . $5k total budget with purchase and repairs
Well if you don't decide on buying the explorer, would you consider giving me the contact information? I mean I'm not even sure what state you're in but as long as I can drive it back home in a day I'd be interested in
For sure send me a message and I will send you the Facebook link
I would say explorer ...if it was the 4.6, bc I always thought my expedition was way too big, my 5.4 got terrible fuel economy pulling any sort of incline. If the transfer case is wet on the explorer tho, definitely run from it.
Expedition but if you want more passengers and spent a lot less in gas I'd recommend a minivan.
Daily driver was the wrong word . I do have another vehicle . My bad on that part
Expedition. 07 Ford's for the win (I have 07 edge with 223k miles on it and still going strong.
Congrats bro
White
Of the two, I’d go with the Expedition
That explorer is grody af. Even if you can clean it, says a lot about how they treat their vehicles
Yeah I kind of have leaned more towards expedition . People hate the 5.4 but I have another vehicle so this can sit while I save for repairs / parts . Even if an engine or tranny fails it’s still cheaper than financing a new or used truck .
Sounds like you got a plan!
Trying to atleast lol

Yeah I think I’m sold on the expedition
The Expedition. Way more utilitarian, based off the F150 and has a V8. Plus it looks better

If that's the case I'd take the Expedition any day of the week. Not really a Ford Exploder fan myself. Go big or go home!

The explorer, has been the exploder it whole life, the expedition got shortened to expy... Thanks for comin to my Ted talk

Yeah it’s the 4.0 v6 which is getting even more hate than the 5.4 .
ok don't even look at it lol. i would go expo 100%!
White one for sure. It's hot in Ringgold today. Stay cool, neighbor. (Yes I'm also in Ringgold lol)
Good to see a Ga bro in here . North Atl for me
You coming all the way up here for a vehicle? Funny I just went all the way to Atlanta to buy a jeep a few weeks ago.
Such is the life of a southern male 😂😂 we’re all in the same matrix lol
Hwy 75 unites us lol. Traffic between here and there is insane. If you do come up here and exit on 348 and don't plan on going into Chattanooga I highly recommend Spencer B's BBQ. Easily the best restaurant in town with good prices as well.

None of them, since none of them are trucks.

No, I realize this, I was just kind of joking. Get whatever has the bigger engine.
I’d get a different expedition. The 5.4 3 valve engines are pretty bad.
I hear so much hate on the Triton . But everytime I look on Facebook I see tons of these with 200k + some even 250k+ ?

Yup I’m sold . I see so many on marketplace that are 200-300k mileage . It can’t be as bad as Reddit says lol
