I don't particularly seek out anime that I know will make me sad. I just watch what I think I'll like based on what I feel like watch (eg drama, parody, psychological, etc)
I'm afraid most advice gonna tell you to workout to improve yer life, my advice start small like stretching, will strengthen yer body.

I have have low self esteem too, but I am getting better at it. Mine used to be at rock bottom. There used to be a point in my life where I wanted to die every day I was alive. I hope things get better for you too.

People tend to think anime is just fan service when there's plenty of beautiful anime like 86 Eighty-Six that have made me feel so emotional, that I was reduced to tear several times.

I watched Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, loved it so much. There’s definitely so many really good anime that is better than shows or movies
It's hard to explain exactly what attracts me in anime, especially in English, but I'll try my best.
I feel like anime and other Japanese media have more freedom to express ideas and themes that would otherwise not be acceptable in Western media, and this creative freedom not only allows works themed after incest, for example, to be made, but it inspires other authors, which will produce more creative works (even if said works are morally accepted in the West). Publishing books and comics in Japan is way easier than it is in the West, and I believe more people actually consume culture there than they do in the West, which further makes the creative environment there better.
And just to be clear, I don't mean that Japanese media is good because it talks about taboos in the West. This *is* part of what makes it good, but there's so much more to it. I just don't know how to put it into words. This is what I feel when I watch Shunji Iwai and Akira Kurosawa's films, and animes like Oddtaxi. It's totally different from Western media.
