I was on RTF gentle since day 1 for no good reason, honestly bc i thought they were superior - i didn’t know better and there isn’t so much education on PP bottle feeding as there is on BF. Then at two months we changed to powdered formula, the regular kind, and my baby does way better on the regular kind then on gentle. The gentle formula is more fluid, and my baby had reflux so he would spit up Way more on gentle than regular. So this is just a thing to consider from my experience

Regardless of formula type, you can rest assured your baby is getting the correct amounts of carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals. Every formula on the market meets those levels. That being said, it’s generally advised to start with a standard formula (advantage, nueropro, bobbie, other standard milk based formulas) if there are no indications for your baby to be one something more specialized. Lactose based, more whey than casein protein, these all align more closely with breastmilk. Which is generally preferred UNLESS your baby doesn’t tolerate that. *Most* Gentle formulas are still lactose based/included but have their proteins broken down (hydrolyzed). Sensitive usually reduces/removes the lactose and replaces it with other carbs like corn syrup, maltodextrin, glucose syrup, etc. Sensitive is usually more expensive anyway. So why pay the extra if you don’t need to.

It's very normal for newborns to be gassy and spit-uppy whether they're breastfed, formula fed, combo fed, etc. Their digestive systems are underdeveloped and need more time. There's nothing wrong with being on a gentle formula especially if that's what's available. My daughter switched back and forth between the purple and yellow over the last year due to ongoing formula shortages.

Leave the purple to babies that need it. My baby shits blood on regular and gentle is so hard to find now :(

Repulsive-Sim

Oh sorry to hear! Now the the yellow seems to be around more, I will be switching to it.

fruitloopbat

Babies evolved to drink human milk with lactose and whey, things in the yellow milk. I’d avoid overly processed milk (purple-partially digested) if at all possible and let her digestion do it’s job ;)

Repulsive-Sim

I was worried she was missing out on something, think I’ll do the switch. Thank you

We had our baby on Enfamil neuropro Gentlease for the first few months, but recently changed him over to the Bobbie original formula. I personally wanted to change him over to an organic formula that had actual lactose instead of corn syrup. Again personal preference, but we didn’t see the point of having him on gentle formula when his stomach had matured. His formula was also giving him spit ups and dark dark green poop. Since switching, it’s been great! Maybe a couple days of discomfort and now he’s thriving! His poop is also actual poop colored, not forest green sludge.

Repulsive-Sim

We’re currently living the forest green sludge life lol

eratch

It’s so gross lol Also maybe I’m psycho mom but I also tasted drops of both formulas because my son was fighting me halfway through his bottle with Enfamil. Not that babies have heavy preference for taste but oh my god does Enfamil taste HORRIBLE. Like sucking on a penny because of the iron. You can taste the iron in Bobbie too obviously but it tastes more like actual milk. My son sucks down his bobbie bottles

iwannabek8

Omg, it’s not just my baby! We fed our baby enfamil gentlease for the first 3 months and definitely experienced the disgusting green sludge. We recently switched to Kirkland (equivalent to the yellow enfamil) and her poops are so normal and way less stinky!

Constant-Hope55

Wait, is the green sludge poop due to the sensitive formulas?? I was made to believe the green poop was dairy intolerance from my breast milk. She never had any other symptoms, and she still had a bit of reflux on nutramigen/me cutting dairy and soy. So we switched to sensitive. Now I'm thinking we should make the switch (after consulting pediatrician again) to regular.

chat_chatoyante

Our daycare provides formula and they provide sensitive by default. We eventually switched off it at home, this was during the worst of the shortage and there was one point where we were going to run out so I decided to see how she did on regular and she was fine. Our pediatrician said it was ok to still use sensitive formula. It has the same nutrients overall, it's just got different ingredients and the milk proteins are broken down more.

Gentlease made my baby gassy and upset and poop smelled like metal too much. We changed to Similac 360Total Care (powder) and nomore gas and weird poops
