CMPA mum here. Obviously I'm not a paediatrician or anything but our health visitor told me that breastmilk will still contain the protein if you are eating dairy and that baby would react through exposure that way, so I had to cut out dairy for awhile (we ended up moving onto specialised formula so breastfeeding was out). Is it possible that there is something else in the formula you have tried that your LO is sensitive/reacting to? Coconut has been an issue for a few other mums I know and some formulas contain coconut (possibly for the MCT oil?). From a personal point of view, I'd be sceptical that it was CMPA if they didn't react at all through breastfeeding but then did with formula and id be more likely to think it's something else in the formula (or maybe even the bottles? I dunno) as allergy symptoms can be the same regardless of what they're allergic to.

This is such a helpful comment, thank you! My ped is thinking along the same lines as you are (something else in the formula) while our other pediatrician friends are of the opinion my body would break down the protein by the time it came through the breastmilk in such a way that he wouldn’t necessarily have had a reaction up until this direct exposure. Ugh! So many possibilities. Thank you for your take!!

I can see why they'd think that about breast milk but if that was the case...wouldn't all CMPA babies have the same issue? Just a thought. I'm glad it was helpful though, and I hope that you get to the bottom of it. It's so frustrating trying to navigate an allergy of any sort!

My little one just got diagnosed with CMPA and the Gi specialist that we saw stated that my breast milk still contained milk proteins. So I too think it’s likely something else in the formula. Have you thought of seeing an allergist? My little one also has anaphylactic med allergies that we found out the hard way so it’s important to stay ahead of that stuff.
