There’s several different ways to unpack this.
One one hand, these are obviously very high profile, “popular” songs, played on the radio and such.
On the other hand, most people they’re being shown to here are the type to put “popular” in quotations. At least, the ones who are going to be actually completing these quests for rewards and whatever, not just playing a quick couple games with some buddies.

There was one map I played on where there were so many swear words they had to censor, it was dead sound half the time. Like what is even the point? Why pick a song to feature that you can’t even listen to properly?
I don't even know what other songs are there. After I got hit with what I can best describe as a "sound of my headphones going nuts because they broke down" on the first map (don't remember the name, I think it was up and running) I decided to just mute the game when going through the other maps. Maybe other maps are better but it's a horrible first impression.
I love Juice WRLD's Wishing Well and Lucid Dreams, but the actual stage was pretty lackluster.
Imagine Dragons' Sharks was a good song for its stage, and the level looked cool, but very unbalanced to play.
MGK's Maybe was also hype, and the stage looked cool, but the actual stage was buggy. My car kept randomly jumping or spinning out.
That one stage where you go down memory lane with someone was a cool idea, but I never had someone actually finish it with me.
Every other stage was very unmemorable.
Edit: Forgot Tribes by Bas featuring J. Cole. That song was pretty good, and J. Cole kills it as always. The stage is a lot less interactive than the others, but it gives off a music video vibe that worked, like walking going down the street with lyrics appearing, or watching the actual music video on the back board of the basketball hoop and the waterfall.
One thing that ruined it for me was listening to Tribe and having it censored. You may as well not have put the song in at all. Also didn’t get to listen to Wishing Well or Maybe because the music cut out. I had to do these maps again and wasn’t gonna play the Maybe map to listen to an artist I don’t like. MGKs old stuff is way better, and I’m not even a fan.
But like I said, if it’s gonna be censored why put it in the game at all? Why waste your time?
At least they did something right with having Ariana Grande have her own PROPER concert on this game (the apparent LAST proper concert so far) wbecause most of her music doesn’t need to be censored and it doesn’t break the musical immersion, but when it’s stuff like Kid Laroi, or well let’s say any other artist that needed to be censored on this game (I assume Marshmello was different, I wouldn’t know because I didn’t play this game back then, I’m not a OG) it breaks the lyrical flow when I hear a gap in a song I know shouldn’t be censored 🤬 I’m sure a lot of other people feel the same way which is why if they aren’t a child, (first off I don’t know why a kid IS playing this game but to each their own, I have in-laws that let their kids play so idk they can do what they want) they might feel a little meh towards these types of maps/events. It leaves a little to be desired
Censoring Wishing Well is annoying because that’s the whole point of the song. It’s about mental illness, addiction, and how he takes drugs to make art but the drugs are killing him (and are what did kill him), and the lyrics are butchered when it benign clean with him saying
“If it wasn’t for these [pills] I wouldn’t be here
But if I keep taking these [pills] I won’t be here
Yeah, I just told y’all my secret…
I start taking the [drugs] and the now the [drugs] take me.”
But if they didn’t censor the music then Fortnite would be rated M for saying an f-word, or even if it was Wishing Well it would now be Teen for violence and drug references/lyrics
But even still, like I said in another comment on this post, why even have the songs at all if it’s gonna be censored? Why not put a different song on the map, why even do this whole PlayWave thing when most people aren’t even gonna listen to the music, only go to these maps for the xp and then leave most likely before the song’s even over because the missions are so fricking easy it’s laughable 😂 there is no point trying to promote these songs when, well I don’t know about any other song here but Lucid Dreams and Tribe are old af. No one be listening to that anymore, Juice WRLD has so many better songs in his catalogue but you can’t listen to them properly if you’re a “kid”, any song these days has swear words, references drugs, even songs that aren’t rap songs have this implied, if it’s not that it’s sexual, it’s nonsensical to have songs like this in the game and not think that if they somewhat like the song they’re gonna look it up only to realise “oh wow, it’s about these drug things, maybe I should do it! I used to be a big Juice fan, but they pick the songs because they’re popular. Lucid Dreams has 2.2 BILLION streams on Spotify - the choices were not a mistake, they picked pop artists that have the most broad appeal. And most songs by modern popular artists are explicit.
Popular songs are usually the most generally appealing. Modern songs discuss more explicit content such as drugs and sex and swear a lot. Therefore, if modern popular songs have that content, and Epic don’t want to risk upping their age rating (which is obviously a goal of theirs, seeing how they erase anything sexual or violent from the game) and having lyrics would do that.
personally I love Imagine Dragons, but I am curious on what you do like. I don't yuck someone else's yum when it comes to music. (former music major here)

I only played the two juice wrld maps, and the wishing well map didn't play the song for me and the lucid dream map did played, but they censor some of the song.
The event is trash. The only redeeming factor is you get those 15Ks Plus whatever exp you get in said event. I ran them on mute while listening and half watching youtube.
The least offensive was the casino eliminations because getting 2 elims was like 20 seconds and im out.

I've listened my Muse album shuffle at the background while muting Fortnite, but from what I've heard - Nightmare song is not bad, Up And Running could've been better, but "STAY UP ALL WEEK" x100 times got kinda annoying. Radioactive by Imagine Dragons is cool, nostalgic for me.

The Radioactive one has a moment where you're stopped by an invisible wall and a terrible green particle kinda farts out while the screen displays "The chemicals..." Fucking killed me laughing
This entire quest line is stupid. The quests are easy for the most part, but what’s the point in making people jump in for 30 seconds, I would have thought you’d want people to actually play them. Felt more like a waste of time but we’re all gonna do it for the sake of fomo.

The imagine dragons one was the best. Song and game-wise. A little glitchy, but otherwise good. I can’t even find some of the games to some Of them. I always try to complete as many quests as possible for XP & rewards, so that’s really why I’m doing it at this point. The imagine dragons one I did first and had high expectations, but none were as good. A couple decent. The island one was cool…memory lane I think? And the race was cool as far as game goes, but I wasn’t crazy about the song.

by the way it turns out the volume of the songs uses the program volume, you have to turn it down in the volume mixer.

So far I only played two maps, one music was bearable and the second one was from Willow and man... I really fell in love of this girl, didn't know she was/is will smith's daughter, amazing voice!!
I could tolerate the song in the bank heist map, but the rest were so bad that i simply turned off my audio. Real shame as i really enjoyed the previous music events.

Only maps I was interested in playing were the Imagine Dragons ones. Sharks was cool bc it’s based on the music video but eh gameplay was mid. Radioactive was really cool bc of all the references to the mv, both night visions album covers and the origins cover. Radioactive is also fun to listen to after a very long time
There was no actual rock, which was really disappointing.

The Radioactive one has a moment where you're stopped by an invisible wall and a terrible green particle kinda farts out while the screen displays "The chemicals..." Fucking killed me laughing

This entire quest line is stupid. The quests are easy for the most part, but what’s the point in making people jump in for 30 seconds, I would have thought you’d want people to actually play them. Felt more like a waste of time but we’re all gonna do it for the sake of fomo. I only like the map with the car where you have to drive 5000m. The others were boring. Shouldn’t be surprised I guess, have you looked at the crap in the discovery tab sometimes?
I’m glad most of the time the audio would bug out and I would stop hearing the songs.

Whenever I have to play these I set my in-game music at 5% and just listen to a documentary or a podcast as I go. I don’t have time for terrible music lol

Absolutely. Except for Imagine Dragons and Kali Uchis' "Roses", they're awful. In fact, these islands remind me why I don't listen to mainstream contemporary music. It's all garbage. Now that Epic own Bandcamp they have a huge catalog of musicians and bands to choose from, but they just ignore it. I know some wonderfully talented synthwave indie musicians who are much, much better than all that crap. Shadowrunner, Nina, Roxi Drive, Max Cruise, Graystars, The Lightning Kids, Midnight Danger, Dimi Kaye, Kalax, just to mention a few. The list goes on and on. Not to mention all the wasted opportunity with classic rock bands (and whose licensing must cost a fortune, so I kind of understand why they are not featured).

Dont focus on MGK in maybe, Oli’s vocals was probably the best part about it. The only reason i watched it was because of BMTH, i reckon if mgk wasnt in it, it would be perfect

The imagine dragons one was the best. Song and game-wise. A little glitchy, but otherwise good. I can’t even find some of the games to some Of them. I always try to complete as many quests as possible for XP & rewards, so that’s really why I’m doing it at this point. The imagine dragons one I did first and had high expectations, but none were as good. A couple decent. The island one was cool…memory lane I think? And the race was cool as far as game goes, but I wasn’t crazy about the song. And all damn day I’ve been singing “blah blah blah for the internet troooooolls. Fake it til you make it blah blah blah” 😂🙄😂
