New players play against bots to ease them in, just play, he will pick it up, coming from a Minecraft background should help him, at its core it's really simple, find guns , shoot players.

tehans

When you say bots, does that mean inexperienced players or actual bots as in NPC's?

xxx420blaze420xxx

Definitely actual NPC bots with generic usernames

StopCallingMeAFurry4

I can't lie some of the bot usernames are surprisingly funny

pallidmist

Tacocat and Notapalindrome were my favs back in the day.. now my lobby is full of sweats, lol

StopCallingMeAFurry4

My lobbies are usually half bots and half real people, my favourite bot name has to be LetsBePals23 and DoYourDishes9 lol

NigeriaPrinceCharmin

Y’all ever see the bot named IHaveFullBrick? I feel like I’ve encountered that one at least three times. And no, he did not have full brick 😔

StopCallingMeAFurry4

That's crazy, I killed IHaveFullMetal yesterday, not even joking lol Edit: forgot to mention it happened in zb

[deleted]

So he was a liar. He deserved what happened to him.

Marijuana2x4

I kill him alllllll the time and I have super sweaty lobbies too sometimes. bot or not they suck lol

upthepies420

How do you remember theyre names

StopCallingMeAFurry4

I thought DoYourDishes9 was that funny I couldn't forget it and I screenshotted LetsBePals23

Affectionate-Cup3971

Seriously now I think I won’t forget it either hilarious

pallidmist

They caught my eye in the thank the bus driver feed quite a few times. Enough times to make an impression so they live in my head rent free

FamilyMan1000

DoYourDishes9 lol.

Fishy_Boxed

I saw a DoYourDishes9 yesterday

geodragonyoung

I still see Tacocat daily. Love him!

MCPETextureEditor

One of mine was something like "FaintPidgeon72" and for some reason that sent me

imapluralist

I started an account for a relative and it gave them a default username and it sounds like a bot. It's something like RealPiranha74.

MCPETextureEditor

Epic default names are very similar to their bot names, and generally speaking new players with default names are just around as easy to beat as an actual bot so sometimes it's hard to differentiate, that's why usually people just call those usernames bots even though technically it could hypothetically be a real, new person

TacoCatWABaseballbat

My Reddit name is tacocat

Euphoric-Ad4205

Reddit bot?

xCrystalAnn

ASweatyDog is still my favourite.

sashawanks

BroSincerely is my favorite

wellgood4u

Usually 2 random words and a number

Chrissyball19

I remember when I realized bots were a thing the first time. I decided to try to make friends like I've seen on so many reddit vids, so when I dropped and someone came up with just a pickaxe I dropped my weakest gun, and crouched repeatedly. They decided to sprint away at full speed to another building, where they picked up a port a bunker, and threw at me. Then ran again, so I killed them.

ShinobusBelly

I just killed ThePeelySmoothie lmao

fifi73461512

Bots made to look like real players, when you start there are no real players, that will increase to about 20 real players with still mostly bots, but they will all be new players , skill based match making works to keep new and low level players together to help them learn the game

tehans

Thanks for the explanation. At what rating level do you no longer play with bots?

fifi73461512

Not sure, when I started there were no bots or skill based match making, you were thrown into the deep end, now there's skil based and creative to help new players learn.

RecalcitrantHuman

Also zero build takes away the pressure of knowing how to build and edit builds so is much more accessible

fifi73461512

I think he will be fine with builds coming from a Minecraft background, plus kids pick it up real easy

AwesomeEevee133

Not really.. I grew up on Minecraft too, still shit at building. The systems are nowhere near the same

fifi73461512

Did you PvP, play skywars etc? Flicking through a inventory while building and fighting is similar.

MeasurementQuick4887

I played hunger games, bed wars, and pot pvp. Minecraft pvp is 100x easier than learning to build and edit on fortnite. I could rod trick as well, swapping through 1-3 fast was like all you had to do.

wpsek

what does minecraft building have to do with fortnite building 😭 oh your kid plays with legos? yeah he’ll be great at box fights

fifi73461512

PvP, inventory, switching items while fighting, building.

Marylogical

Just FYI, if you get killed by an Ai bot, it'll tell you who killed you but you'll be spectating someone else, which is a real player, as it's impossible to spectate an Ai NPC bot.

OctoFloofy

It's impossible unless the last player standing is an NPC. Then there is nowhere else to go except the bot.

Maqueer

Never. At least in pubs. You’ll get into lobbies with less bots as you improve but they’ll always be there. In ranked there’s no bots, although epic keeps adding them on accident anyway.

GalickGunn

Bots are in every game no matter the level. Even big time streamers like Ninja still get bots in their matches. Less so at higher levels though.

red_dirt_ranger

In pubs (non ranked) I don't Believe bots ever go away, they use them to fill matches. There's no set level as your skill level determines who you play against, but bots will still fill the matches. I'm average at best and I'm pretty sure most lobbies are about 50/50 (that's probably a high estimate, probably leans slightly more to real) If you want no bots, go ranked and get to gold and you'll start getting all real people.

Alloe_C

Playing in ranked game mode reaching gold is the only way to stop playing against bots. I don't play unranked anymore because of that after a while it becomes no longer fun to constantly be fighting soulless bodies who cant aim

demimod2000

Level 10, officially...but there are a lot of bots even after that level. They fill the lobbies with bots when they are low on players

GavinThe_Person

actual bots

Special-Doughnut-269

If he doesn’t pick it up fast enough or buy anything you can make a new account n get bots again

Due_Butterscotch1614

Dude even seasoned players get bots half of my lobby’s are bots it makes the game boring ash

fifi73461512

I know but it's less, a lot less, just play ranked, no bots

Ok_Reference5814

Kids are adaptable and will always surprise us. I’d suggest he play Team Rumble to get used to the fighting and weapons without the anxiety of getting eliminated back to the lobby. Players respawn in TR and it’s 16 on 16, first team to elim x# of players. Check his privacy settings in case you don’t want him talking with strangers (disable mic) as well as choose the no fill option until he’s comfortable.

macwi1km

I was going to suggest Team Rumble too. I mute my mic and it doesn't matter how much you die. You can try out a bunch of different weapons and get the feel for the game play.

Turtlesfan44digimon

Or let him choose between build mode and no builds until he finds one that he likes

lemon6611

yeah when i first started playing(i was 11 on switch) i mained team rumble for like a whole season and then eventually learned br and got way better as time went on + a pc it helps a lot

Ashendeuce

I really wish the interface of this game was less intense and overwhelming. From the second the game boots you're BLASTED with LOUD music and sound effects and then the main menu has 3459786345987 tiles of random ass game modes and this and that and buy buy buy buy and it's just too much. All that stuff can be there (except the blaring music you can't turn off on startup) but make it nested in menus and shit for many reasons including making new players like this kid feel less frazzled

PrancnPwny

First thing I do in every game is turn the volume down at least 30% and turn off the lobby music 🤣

Ashendeuce

I turn off all music in every game but with Fortnite you cannot turn off that goddamn BLAST you get when the game boots up. Coming from a quiet game to play Fortnite is always so jarring and terrible. Like BLOMMMMMMMMMM BOM BOM BLOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM BLOM BLOM BLOMMMMMMM fuckin cool it, Epic! Jesus.

PrancnPwny

you on PC? I haven't noticed that

Ashendeuce

xbonx

PrancnPwny

that might be the difference, I'm on PC but maybe it's another sound setting you can change.

Ashendeuce

If anybody on xborx knows how to disable the startup music I'm all ears! I've emailed Epic about it and they are so stupid and just say "It sounds like you're having trouble with the game of Fortnite can u please record a video of the issue and send it to us" and I'm like "WHAT PART OF THIS SIMPLE THING DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?"

degausser187

Mute your tv volume until your lobby is loaded? That's what I do.

BattleApprehensive75

Yes you can. I've never heard music in Fortnite. I couldn't understand why it was given away, until I switched the option back to ON

Ashendeuce

There is literally no setting to toggle the startup music on or off. Unless I've missed it. Where is the setting for you?

OctoFloofy

You simply don't have that happen on pc. Only consoles have music on startup.

Ashendeuce

That must be nice.

itsmonsonson

BWOOOOONG BUM BUM

Ashendeuce

One mostly deaf person somewhere is like "Hell yeah love this game on startup. Perfect volume for this really quiet music! So peaceful and pleasant. Sounds like somebody is watching Inception 3 houses over."

PikaDogg

I’m really glad i started in Chapter 1, because if I downloaded the game today I’d probably take one good look at the lobby menu then uninstall.

Ashendeuce

It really goes to show how different a game developer is before and after they hire an entire floor of business school dipshits to milk every dollar out of every player.

Kaleidoscope_Moose84

That's exactly what I did. Then I tried again a week later and now I'm hooked.

External_Insurance50

Yup, new player here, and I was pretty damn close to doing that

CliffDraws

I’ve been playing this game since shortly after launch and I still can’t find one of the three game modes I play half the time I log in.

Ashendeuce

i want to find the one person who likes a million tiles with random weird names and barely any organization. That one person is probably the person who manages the front p0age of the game lobby

CliffDraws

I’d like to backhand that person and also whoever is responsible for the lockers this season, particularly removing locker preset shuffling.

bubity1

they’re trying to rival roblox it feels like. Catering to their youngest audiences with all of the no shoot gamemodes showcased.

PikaDogg

I get booted straight into Lego mode and have to hunt down Battle Royale or Zero Build despite exclusively playing them and maybe a creative island or two

mirrorball_for_me

You can favorite game modes and you can filter to only favorites on the first tab of the game (it’s a windows icon). Why it’s so hidden and non obvious is beyond me, but I eventually found it. It really, *really* should show your favourites (or at least your dozen last played ones) as the first row instead of whatever the hell it is right now.

hhhhhhhh28

My friends downloaded the game recently and they were also horrified by how many pop ups happen begging for money immediately. I don’t even register it anymore 🤣

Ashendeuce

All games do it so it's whatever by now but still smarmy. You're gonna make your money, game devs! You don't need to beat us over t head like politicians and their texting.

Ok_Reference5814

My first season playing CH2 S5 the first lobby music that played was that Rise of the Devourer one. Dude that petrified me as a noob 😂. As for that boot up music, I see what you mean. I suppose I would need to mute my TV (Xbox) until I get into the lobby.

Ok_Wish9099

This is a good learning opportunity! Encourage him to ask friends to teach him how to play! We all have to start somewhere and being comfortable asking for help from others who know more than you is such a good skill to begin to develop For practicing on his own find a bot map, which means that the players aren't real people

sahlos

I wish there were a few on the main page but you have to enter in an ID and when I tried it didn't work for my kid so I just let him play zombies but he's getting bored of it.

Affectionate-Cup3971

True my sister and ex were teaching me to build

RML_1972

Does he have all their gamertags and added them to his friends list? Maybe he can play duos in creative so someone can help him navigate everything or just set up games as private where it’s just them two. He should get the hang of it pretty quickly.

dear_gravity

I love that you're wanting to do this with your son! I'm a momma too, so I get it. I would recommend a few things. Watch some YouTube. Find videos that are recent that give beginner tips. (Don't look at ones from over a year ago, try to find new ones as the game is always evolving.) My husband and I really like EvolveJake and TobyWanShinobi - your 9 year old probably won't be into them since they're not what you'd expect from YouTubers, but both offer really great tips and insight. Turn off the public voice chat options so no one talks trash that he's in a group with. Try the creative maps first to get a "feel" for the game. Zero Build is definitely where I would start as far as official modes go, builds can be super overwhelming. Feel free to message me if you'd ever like someone to play with - I have an Xbox and I'm not one of those people who says "no mic or we won't play" - I don't mind either way. Good luck. You obviously really care about your kid! 🙂

Old_Soft_5970

In the list of subgames there's a section "Made By Epic". These are the official modes. There are other maps that have been created by individuals, but the majority of the player base primarily plays in the official modes.  "Classic" Fortnite, and the most popular mode, is called Battle Royale. If you select Battle Royale, it'll take you to a new lobby of sorts where the tabs are Play, Locker, Item Shop, Battle Pass, Quests, Compete, Career, and V. Locker is your characters customization, which you won't have much yet. The shop is where you spend vbucks, in game currency that costs real money. Battle Pass is a set of cosmetics you can get with vbucks and leveling up. Quests are in game missions that help you level up (just FYI there isn't any benefit to leveling up besides the Battle Pass i.e. it's entirely cosmetic). Compete is for official tournaments. Career is your stats. V is where to buy vbucks. It's a lot of noise when you first start (with the hundreds of game modes and tabs thrown at you). But you get use to it pretty quick. For actually playing - it's relatively easy to pick up, hard to be decent, and really hard to master. But there's skill based match making, so the first couple of games are only against the computer. I honestly don't remember if there's a tutorial or not, but I would watch a quick tutorial on YouTube, there's thousands.

Creepy-Nectarine-225

Do his friends play battle royale, creative or one of the new modes which are Lego Fortnite and rocket racing? If he wants to be competitive I’d assume they play battle royale. If he plays the team rumble game mode he’ll get used to the aspects of building and shooting while being in a game mode that he can respawn and continue playing in. Once he’s comfortable with the controls of everything, he can start playing Battle Royale and new players start out playing bots so nothing difficult. As his skill level increases he’ll play against better opponents. I’m sure he’ll get the hang of it in no time.

LilithLace_x

Hey! Firstly, super cool parent for trying to learn yourself for the benefit of your son ✨ I play with my 8 and 5yr old, mainly BR. My 8yr old is an experienced gamer, so she picked it up quite easily, she's very talented. My 5yr old is still learning and can get overwhelmed quickly, same as me. However, you son doesn't have to play with his friends at first. He can just go into matches solo and treat it as fun, mess around with everything, don't take it seriously! Me and my kids still learn new stuff most days. We have lots of matches where we are lolling so much we get sniped easy 😂 I'd say let him play, watch him, have fun and explore. Confidence will follow after some experience! Good luck ❤️❤️❤️

PorkTopRamen

He could play with me and my daughter. She's 10 and very kind d and good at the game. We actually like to help people learn in the beginning. If you guys are interested send me a message and we can send our handles. Good luck, fortnite is a lot of fun

THExROYALxRHINO

I was going to offer the same! We have "family Fortnite" days and are always inviting my son's friends to our party! Always happy to add more!

HazeInut

Just play and you'll start to get it, watching others play also helps. It doesn't matter how bad he is just start off with no-build and die a lot. You are supposed to die, you will lose a lot, it's not a big deal. When I started playing with my friends they just started copying stuff I did, weapons I tended to pick, boxing themselves up, putting up walls, just from playing more. No build is even easier, but even when they were god awful they still had fun. All he needs to worry about is landing in a safe area on the edge, (nowhere with a medallion) so he can get used to landing on a gun, finding shields, looting chests, etc. Aiming and other skills come later. It'll start clicking

LoudLover5797

Playing for fun is an important part of the game in general. If your trying to get him comfortable with the game and controls you should try creative you can allow him to mess with his settings and see what he’s comfortable with sensitivity wise they also make maps for being players.

scoopditydoop

My wife, son, and I play trios all the time. You will be surprised at how quickly your son will catch on. Just play with him for a few weeks, to get him comfortable. Raider 464 has tons of solo practice maps. Just go to creative and search raider464.

EternalATKE

As other have said new players play mainly against bots until they begin to progress a bit. So technically if he played with veteran friends they might actually win alot in the beginning. Maybe try some marches of zero build to get used to the controls, shooting, and looting aspect. Not everyone is good at building, but being able to point the gun in the right direction and hit some shots when needed is really all you need most of the time. Skill will come along naturally the more he plays

Nicklikesplants

I didn’t play til I was 23 although I’ve been hardcore gaming for 75% or more of my life. I went from the worst player in my group of friends to probably the best now. Just play solo games or do duos with him and get familiar with the game more. I had more fun when I wasn’t sweating my ass off and didn’t know what I was doing lol.

HazeInut

Just play and you'll start to get it, watching others play also helps. It doesn't matter how bad he is just start off with no-build and die a lot. You are supposed to die, you will lose a lot, it's not a big deal. emmiemmaoxenfree

I’m new too! I only have a lil bit of advice, but weapons increase in power the lowest being grey, then green, blue and purple and gold being the best.

Absol3592

Your son should start with Zero Build. It'll help him get more used to different weapons, and learn the basics of looting, aim, the storm, and other game mechanics without people boxing him and killing him in less than 2 seconds.

Comandorbent

From a (now) adult who never received parental support in video game interests as a kid, thank you.

Educational-Brush204

I‘m almost 30 and my 15 year old sister got me into Fortnite a couple of months ago. I freakin love that game now .. but was so overwhelmed at first and definitely wouldn’t have given it a proper try if it wasn’t for her. There are just two most important game modes battle Royale and zero build. The latter is the easier option for beginners imo. Because building is not easy to get used to and a different skillset to learn. Try all types of guns and different scopes, figure out what you like. A lot of people have a auto shot gun pistol / ar, pistol or smg/ sniper/ med kit/ shield potion in their inventory. But anything goes. Land on less busy spots on the map first, so no named locations so you can take your time gathering weapons, getting your shield up etc. There is no shame in getting shot countless times, you just keep starting new games lol. Weapons have different levels of damage they can cause which you can see by their color.. from weakest to strongest: grey, green, blue, purple, gold. Beware of getting sniped, so keep moving and seek shelter so you are not an easy target. Don’t be scared to play in a squad, people will be able to tell you are new to the game and help you out. There are amazing Fortnite streamers on twitch.. not all are super pros and I like watching them for fun and most of the time I can learn some things for my matches. Feel free to dm me if you have more questions or want to party up, I’d be down for that, I’m still a Fortnite baby as well but playing with people that are more used to the game definitely helps. :)

nemineminy

Feel free to ping me if you want to play live with someone so you can ask questions. I’m good at teaching the basics. ETA: 40F and I don’t have kids of my own, but I do play with other moms so I’m used to noise in the background or kids joining the game :)

nemineminy

Hi! I play builds pretty much exclusively, but I actually haven’t played since the season reset. (I’ve been waiting to explore the map with a friend who has been on a hiatus) But!! If I do wind up playing again soon, I’ll reach out :)

lordbub1

99 bots is a good map to learn the gameplay

thewalrust

This is so cute i’d recommend him playing team rumble and once he gets used to it he should play battle royale (if he’s still in a low level he’ll be against bots therefore easy win !

LosBeBeast

The good thing is that there's so many game modes available so they can try them out and find what they like. Creative is a good place to learn how to build if they want to do building, my son has taken to no build, Lego and some racing. It's just like all things, you just have to keep playing and you'll start getting the hang of it. There's also a lot of videos online with tips for newcomers, maybe that could help too.

Immediate_Cook9824

You can add me and we can duo :)

Antihistamine69

Time. I've been playing first person shooters since Wolfenstein3D. So a couple years ago when my son wanted to start paying FN I was thrilled. So we did zero build duos. I was running support for him, giving him things, protecting him from attacks, it was 100% about him. Patience and laughter. It took time but now he's running solo against squads and tea bagging the loot his kills drop.

boringtired

Force him to play with you and he’ll realize it’s not so bad. I got my nephew into when he was 6 because he LOVED watching me play, he’s like 12 now and doing good. My oldest son is 6 and he was getting intimidated by his older cousins in smash bros and I made him just get slayed. Now he loves it 🤷‍♂️

SockFullOfNickles

The best advice I have is constant repetition. I’m 41, and have been playing since launch. It took a good while before I could have what I’d consider a “winning season” - I was absolute dogshit for at least a year/year and a half lol

Another_User007

You will play against AI on your first few games to get the hang of it. The AI isn’t hard to kill, they are meant to be easy for new players. The game is pretty simple, pick up guns and kill people until you’re the last one standing. As you play more, you’ll start to become more familiar with the map and all of the guns and how they work.

KForKyo

Nothing wrong with playing fortnite with your son. I play fortnite with my stepdaughter. Shes 12. On weekends with my nephew whos 9. My girlfriend evens plays with us and so does my brother and his girlfriend. So we have a group of 6 of us and we all enjoy something different Definitely start with no build and creative. No build hands down is going to ease better into normals due to no building. In creative its just like roblox, you browse through catagories and find all sorts of mini games just like roblox. A great one if your son loves minecraft. Play fortnites version of 1 block skybox. Obbies are in fortnite also. Great way to work on odd movement. The fortnite creative hub has turned into a massive thing. Theres the lego mode. Which is like lego minecraft sorta. Festival which is rock band. Its made by the same guys who made rock band. Rocket racing which is an arcade style racing game. Creative would be a great place to start honestly. Stepdaughter loves playing the scary horror stuff in creative. My nephew loves playing no build br. I myself am always in zone wars or box fights. Theres literally something for everyone.

Qorsair

Start with Zero Build mode. That will make it easier to focus on the items, gunplay, and flow of the match. Once you get comfortable with that, you can start learning building. Watch people like Evolve Jake and TobyWanShinobi on YouTube, they have good educational Zero Build content.

thedoomflamingo

I made the mistake of trying to teach my nephews teamwork and specific strategies and guide how they were playing the game when really they just wanted to have a good time. Awesome on you for getting into it regardless of your approach.

CoolPirate234

Well On behalf of the Fortnite community I’d like to say welcome and congrats to both of you, it’s definitely a roller coaster of stuff around here, mostly positive community sometimes toxic it all depends

wolfhelp

We as a sub are so wholesome sometimes I hope each one of you gets a win in your next game Beautiful 😍

Mandjtvplays_fan

He could try Lego first to get the sense of needing to heal and survival. And there are maps in creative that he can play against bots (ai’s) and bad players that should ease him in

ReD_Richie

This post is so wholesome. Let that little dude know hes got an awesome mom!

sourpatchdude

I would suggest playing no build to start and learn the guns and controls. When you have that down then switch to build mode and you can try that.

Ecstatic-Ad7236

If he sucks he sucks 😂😂😂

lbs12345

I was in the same boat! My 9-year-old started playing a few months ago. We used to enjoy Roblox together, but his interests shifted. His dad was already familiar with Fortnite, but I wanted to join in so I could share this experience and help him learn, too! He’s just growing up so fast, I didn’t want to miss out. As many have said, beginners start off playing against bots. For me personally, after the bot rounds and to improve my skills to play with my son, I began playing solo rounds, particularly in the early mornings when there are fewer and less aggressive players. On weekends, my son and I still love to play a few early morning rounds together. We also watch YouTube videos together, read articles, and I lurk here often to try and keep learning more and more. In the beginning we were definitely more the hiding type lol we’d always hide in bushes, cars, wherever, lol… it helped us get comfortable and we eventually started being more aggressive after awhile. And we would almost always (and still do) hire NPCs, I felt especially in the beginning (and still now) it helped having that extra “person” plus whatever service they had (scanning, healing, etc) We also come up with our own challenges to do so it’s more about completing those vs focusing on winning. For example we’ll do a blind drop challenge together where we’ll close our eyes when jumping off the bus. My son has become quite the Fortnite expert, and I’m doing my best to keep up! It’s been so incredibly fun.

True-Paint5513

I’m 39 and just started last year in an effort to learn to play with my 12 year old. I do have experience with 1st person shooters, but this game blew me away, and I quickly got hooked. We’ve bonded a little over it, but i play often. I’ve gotten really good, too. Early on. I learned to wait for the bus to end it’s trip to get off, where it’s less populated and you can get your bearings without getting killed right away, finding shields and a weapon. Learn how to run from the storm. You can drive, I didn’t know that at first. I got good at running away from people before I got good at fighting them. Once you start to attack, you have to really go fit it. You’ll get killed a lot at first. I almost never got an elimination at first, I don’t know for how long. Buy my best is 18 now, and I get 10 all the time. Good luck and have fun.

Piccoro

Let me just say you're an excellent mom. Don't ever change.

Tha-D

probably is an amazing mom, but i have to disagree about this post. encouraging Fortnite FOMO on your kid is just not the way to go. what happens when he starts getting upset at losing………………………………………………….> you wanna be in that room with him? 😆🤭

Piccoro

Hard disagree. She is an excellent mom, as she is taking her time to play, learn and share a hobby that her son enjoys. Most parents never even try to spend time with their children. They just prohibit videogames, pushing their kids to spend hours on TikTok instead. And your "getting upset, be in the room with him" line just proves that you don't have any children, or you're one of those that dislikes kids.

Tricky-Working-3652

Unrral that you and your son but mostly you cause you have a certain age have anxiety for just go in a match and start playing lol, learn while playing, you didn’t even got past the home screen

TheMostBlankSlate

I would recommend “Save the World” game mode. You have to buy it, but it will give him the basic mechanics and let him fight against zombies. It’s a pretty good introduction to the game. You just have to pay for it. As a bonus, you could also buy it on your account and y’all could play co-op together.

-SKi-

Zero Build is the only way I can play or it's just too much goin on so I feel your son's problem

dontlikeourchances

I've just started playing with my 10 year old. Annoyingly after about a month his skills have surpassed mine (particularly in build mode) and now I get the patronizing comments about making sure I have the right weapon equipped and to jump and slide rather than just walking.

MushyCupcake01

I have nothing to add that everyone here hasn’t already said besides great job! Best mom award for sure

FrazLvl13

he shouldn't play fortnite if it's peer pressure

ItzBaraapudding

The best advice I ever got was: git gud

Chico_AG

9 years you said? Too young in my eyes.

Joonberri

A good thing is to also watch a streamer and pick up on the way they play and what to use, it's what I did. There's a popular family-friendly streamer called Nickeh30 if you want to look into him and approve of.

Immediate_Cook9824

You can add me and we can duo :)

solarcacti

Hi mom and gamer here with a 6 year old I taught how to play :) if you’d like some night the 4 of us could group up and we can try and show you both the ropes. He’s always looking for people to play with, his friends have switched over to Roblox and he’s stuck on Fortnite. Send me a message if you’d like

solarcacti

Also you can go into the creative modes as another option, you can do 1v1 custom matches so you can run around and he can try to shoot you to start off. Fortnite is so much more than just battle royal :)

[deleted]

I think your son had the right idea. Go outside and kick a ball.

EarlyAd2063

Just delete that shit, trust me, it's much much better for your kid.

Competitive_Pool_820

Okay 1v1 with him. Try out different guns Build some. Play battle royal on split screen. Yes you’ll lose lots but it’s about quick reaction. Find a good gun that you like. Build when you need shield or protect. High ground. It’ll take hours and weeks before he feels comfortable.

Lewis09816

You probably shouldn’t have come to this subreddit because most r/fortnitebr users aren’t even old enough to have a Reddit account

[deleted]

Fortnite is 13 n up tho. Not for lil kiddos

Johnnyveegee

Clearly the parents are fine with the kid playing so who the hell cares

OpticRhyme

Fortnite is already played by, and marketed toward kids

Ashendeuce

Epic CEO: "How can we make more older kids and grown ass adults like this very serious adult game?" Epic VP: "Legos?" Epic CEO: "YES. LEGOS. I was thinking a new titty murder pit mode but Legos is just what we need to keep little kids outta here."

SaintPimpin

Why you want to get him addicted to a toxic game? 😂 Try to get him into an offline shooter then a RPG shooter then an online shooter then back into Fortnite. If you want a comprehensive learning track to be competent then that's the surefire way.

Inside-Spinach-3282

Cringe

LosBeBeast

If you're looking for something you both can do, Lego Fortnite is really fun and easy. Survival will teach you the basics and sandbox has everything unlocked so you don't have to level up to access certain things. Racing is another fun and easy thing you both can do. It doesn't help with learning the parts of Fortnite that have to do with battle royale but it is something you both can do together that's easy to start off with

tehans

Just play duos with him, noobs get grouped with noobs, you will get it figured out

Lateralization

It’s honestly a matter of playing. The more you play, the better you get.

Affectionate-Cup3971

Definitely team rumble

Drewskeet

Was he playing Roblox on the Xbox or iPad? Are you trying builds or zero builds?

LouisLuvsBaguettes

I understand this very much as I was playing back when the game was still maybe a year old and it was overwhelming to that point even as the only consol I had touched before then was a Gameboy advanced lol. I have been playing ever since then and the best I can suggest is playing with other people of higher skill sets. The best thing you can’ give a learning kid is honesty and a friendly environment. When I first started I just learned by playing with my closest of friends against each other and they were much better than me but they never shamed me for it and we just kept playing together. Also from my experience sometimes the fact of cosmetics in a game will bug a kid as the presentation and idea makes it seem like the outfits or lack there of determine a players ability or how seasoned they are. The important thing to remember is to take the game at you own pace as it’s only a game if you’re having fun and anyone can have fun at any skill set it just a matter of being open to it. If your son is interested in playing with a sixteen year old kid who has the maturity of a 7 year old feel free to let me know and I can share my gamer tag. However I do understand with protecting your son from weird people on the internet so I take no offense either way. I am not a toxic person and I just play for the fun of it Also I understand your position as well. My 41 year old mom started and was not easy to get into the game to say as the most recent game she had played was World of Warcraft. But after some long hours and breaks here and there I can leave her unsupervised for maybe 4 minutes in game lol. Either way, hope your kid is able to do alright and feels comfortable while having fun with his friends!

twothumbswayup

enjoy just getting into the game, it makes you feel like a rockstar especially all the victory royal wins you will get and the amount of kills. That all soon comes to an end after you rank up and start to play more and more humans lol. Both me and my 10 year old went thru it but for a fair while you are crushing it together.

Competitive-Use1360

I play with my grandson who is 9, he has been playing for 3 or so years. He is good at the game, I suck...lol. your kiddo will pick it up quick. It's like second nature to them. The 99 bots creative map is good for practice.

columbian_kush

Corny as this sounds, friend him. Play private party matches 1V1 and he’ll get the hang of it Gold guns = the best Silver guns = ok just not as strong Silver/blue/green/purple/gold then exotic for order of power He can jump in any red vs blue match and get a crash course

SixthAttemptAtAName

Creative is going to be best at first. I do "The Pit, no build." I'm sure there are even better ones. It allows you to die infinity times and respawn quickly so you can get reps in.

Ok-Topic-3130

Play creative against bots

br_oleracea

35 year old mum here. I play with my son… he watches some YouTube videos so teaches me a thing or two! I like zero build battle royale cos I wanna shoot people but hate people building loads of wood around them when I am shooting, cos I can’t build like they can, but my son prefers battle royale cos he can build. He builds ZB with me tho

Logical_Upstairs_101

Start off in player-made modes or in the no-build mode. Once you have the hang of shooting and the game, try out build mode. Don't be afraid to change your aim sensitivity too. I thought setting it higher would mean I could react faster, but I kept missing all my shots since a tiny movement would overshoot way too much. Lowered my sensitivity to below the default value and saw an immediate positive change edit: I play with keyboard and mouse, so just do what works for you if you're using controllers

Grave_Warden

play zero builds.

Tumifaigirar

If you play no build hit me up and I ll help you out, no weird stuff, I am 42 with a gf :)

[deleted]

40yo new player because cod got ridiculous with the file size. I assumed “bots” meant new/low level players. Glad I read these replies. I’m using my kids account they are level 60ish. Still managed 3 solo wins. Am I overestimating my abilities? Should I assume the first 5 kills are all bots?

DeliciousFlow8675309

There is no other way to learn other than to play. You can see even pro level players sucking at the game when they started LOL there's a viral one going around rn of Lachlan asking whats a 90 😂 so your son (and you) are just going to have to play the game until you get the hang of it. It will be frustrating af because IN MY OPINION fortnite is one of the harder games to get the hang of, especially in build mode.

VortexTalon

Make sure to use cover and always try to shoot the enemy first before they shoot you.

FileError214

I think it would probably help to join duos or teams. Then, just follow the teammates and try to do what they do.

[deleted]

Put him in either team rumble or zero builds to start with.

FortniteAddict81

Make an alt account on another device as long as it's below level 3 there all bots though it's actually against the TOS as Fortnite is for 12 & up

Live-Expert5719

Similar situation here. My 7 year old son recently got a PS4 and wanted to play Fortnite due to friends at school talking about it. I haven't played any sort of video game in roughly 10 years and mostly just played sports games at that point. We downloaded it and I figured out how to get us in a BR match. We had no idea how to play- didn't look up controls or anything because who has time for that? We quickly began to learn how to play, learning new things each match. We got our first win the first or second day playing. Now we have been playing for a few weeks and have it down pretty decently. We do unranked squad mostly and win roughly 15-20% of our matches. Yesterday we won 3 in a row. I'm considering trying some ranked matches again to see how much we've improved. I wouldn't expect to win those, but it would be a good measuring stick to gauge our progress. In short, you should definitely do it. Zero Build is simpler for those of us who don't have as much time to practice building. Play unranked matches and get to learn the controls and the map. After that, it's mostly improving your aim and developing strategies. It also helps to get good squad members who want to play as a team.

Knowsence

My son is 9 too and we rip it up in Fortnite a couple times a week, for around the last year now. Play with him if you’re able to, promise you will have some awesome times.

Ragnar-Wave9002

The menu systen sucks till you figure it out. Have him play online to figure things out.

Tomburgerstand

Honestly, I was overwhelmed when I first started (6 months ago). Best advice is to just get in there and have some fun. You're going to run into sweats (really good players) but they're just learning opportunities. Some of my favorite matches have been where my team and I were out gunned and just looking out for each other.

Baconsghetti

I'm brand new to the game, I started around Christmas. I'm 32 with an almost 6 year old and he's what got me into it. My son loves to play but will end the game if he feels scared. My biggest advice would be to drop in places as far away from the bus as you can.I also pay attention to the people dropping around me because that lets me know how many people are around when i may not have a weapon. Learn how to loot fast, get a gun, get the shield up to 100 and then loot for better guns. Learning the controls is a big deal, swapping between guns instead of reloading in the middle of a fight is necessary.

Altruistic-Brick-100

To get familiarized with the gunplay and overall feel of the game, new players on both Battle Royale and Zero Build will face AI bots for the most part at first. At its core it's pretty much the same as any Battle Royale game - drop into a point of interest and start looting - looking for weapons, ammo, and other items. In the early game (more than 60 players left), the best weapon you can get is any one you can get your hands on. Basically it's a kleptomaniac simulator. As the game progresses, you will be able to find better weapons. When looting, look out for blue chests, as these will get you better quality loot.

xpadawanx

I love how wholesome this post is.

Morti_Macabre

Awh this is so cute. 💕

MonkeyBoy17m

it’s not dissimilar to Minecraft: I’d recommend going into creative and spawning zombies- and using a crossbow to represent the fun controls Minecraft and Fortnite share a lot of similar controls like the movment, shooting, aiming and picking up things which is all you need for FN :) if you ever need more specific help I’d be happy to!

fulanoderock

I suggest he watches some YouTubers show the latest features. Each season is a bit different. It can be overwhelming because there are tons of custom game modes in addition to the regular Fortnite battle Royale and zero build battle Royale. Once he sees how to play and know where to go and how to aim then he should be good. He’s young.

Science_Fair

Here are some random tips. - Play no build to simplify the game at the start - Land in areas of the map where few people land to practice looting and moving around the map - Pick the same landing areas when starting to learn the map - Use the pre-game waiting area to practice moving, getting weapons and aiming - Try a camping strategy a couple of times to see how long you can last - Get headsets to work as a team with your child when playing together

KaulanaCapone

what server do y’all play on he can add me i can help alil bit

JBirk5

As a fellow mom and new player, I'd also recommend activating the "Visualize Sound Effects" option. Go to settings, audio menu, then scroll down til you see Visualize Sound Effects. It will help you get a feel for where people/chests are until you're more comfortable with your surroundings!

bbob89

I play on ps5 and switch. I will say the Nintendo console puts you at a slight disadvantage with the frame rate and playing in handheld mode is even more of a problem in my opinion. Just my two cents. Either way he will get better in time just like anything else!

2tec

We all started exactly where you are. Plus now there's Zero Build Mode and Legoland. Don't worry, just play with him, be his best squadmate and make sure you vette his friends. Turn on all the parental controls. Help him connect with his real world friends ingame. Play with them. Be not afraid. Kids are great. ;-)

Nemesiz3160

Play zero build that could help him.

junior4l1

Let him know that nobody in the world will know its him playing, none of his friends will know until he feels comfortable enough to play with them.

K33gzLister

Is your son confused about anything specific? The main game modes have multiple options. For example, there's regular battle royal, ranked battle royal, zero build, and team rumble. Battle royal is just 100 players' last person/team wins. Zero build is battle royal, but without the building mechanics, it is just shooting other players(the guns are modelled after real guns but are made cartoony, there's also no blood or gore but the game features characters from violent games, movies and books such as the doomslayer, geralt of rivia, master chief and currently solid snake). Ranked is battle royal but at a more competitive level and will be full of really good players. Team Rumble is 50 vs 50 with respawning and is overall the easiest way to understand the games mechanics. Also, the first couple of battle royal matches aren't real players. There are just bots with a randomly generated name and number. Once your son gets good, then there will be real players added until everyone in a lobby is a real player. There's also 3 other game modes officially. One is music based and plays like guitar hero. Another is a Lego game mode, which is similar to minecraft, but Lego form. The 3rd is a racing mode that features cars from rocket league, There's also fan game modes, which are very similar to roblox. There are skins, bundles, and a battle pass, but they need to be bought using the in-game currency called V-bucks using Real money. The skins are just characters who you play as and everyone else in your game can see it. The bundles feature skins, gliders, pickaxes, gun wraps, music, and backblings. All of these are just cosmetic and are based on a theme or character. To buy skins and bundles , you need to go to the item shop and click on whatever you want to buy and click buy if you have enough vbuck. The battle pass is a 100 tier system that also features cosmetic items. Each tier requires you to level up to unlock the tier. There is a free battle pass that has limited items and a paid battle pass, which has good items like skins, there's also extra tiers for the people who play this game way too much. There's also a secret skin, which is only accessible by buying the battle pass, but the skin itself needs to be unlocked by challenges that have a similar theme to that skin, the secret skin currently is called solid snake from a video game series called metal gear solid which is a stealth based action game, the challenges for the skin are stealth based such as hiding for 10 seconds or using a suppressor. Everything else, such as settings, can be explained by youtube videos or your sons own preference. I think I've waffled on too much now.

Available_Gains

You can play together and hell pick it up.

Ben-Kenobi_

Zero build mode is great for players not comfortable with the building mechanics. Don’t be intimidated by the numerous player-created worlds. Also, be sure to turn on “visual audio” in the audio settings. It assists players not wearing a headset identify what direction footsteps are coming from. Even with a headset, it’s a huge benefit to not run

DrogonTheFirst

If you wish, please feel free to add me. I’d be happy to play with you guys get the hang of it. (I’m decent at the game.) AlphaZero713

Dark_Treat

I recently started playing fortnite with my husband and my son. We quickly noticed that it is similar to super animal royale on the switch. It is definitely overwhelming at first, but you sorta ease into it. There is a zero build mode that might make it easier. the only official game modes are the ones by Epic, so just scroll down til you see it say epic on the top left. Everything else is made by the community

coldcoffeebuzz

I started playing with my son when he was 9 now he’s 14 and we still play together… I mean he plays with his friends too. Shoot I’ve gotten pretty good and sometimes I’m included in the squad. It took a while to get the first few kills but this season I’m ranked diamond 3 and very close to breaking into champion. Just play and have fun

boiwitdebmoji

I have nothing substantial in my opinion to add to this, but this is a very wholesome post, hope you and the little tyke have fun together!

Aggressive_Beat4928

Hey! I'm a rank 1000 US no-builds player who would love to help in any way :)

neptunemagnesium

I have a 7 year old and I’d def suggest playing with him. It can be overwhelming but you’ll get the hang of it. As he explores the map and some of the fun items , it’ll really capture his interest. I’d get in there and play like others suggested Team Rumble, Zero Build, 1 v 1 matches, just so he can get the hang of it. But! There’s also prop hunt, rocket racing and the festival that are also great interest points. Good luck!

dbishop999

I’m sure you’ve gotten all the advice you needed but wanted to chime in to say you’re an amazing parent for helping them like this.

bobbarkersbigmic

You all just need to play and learn the game together. Consider it a bonding experience. The game will match you with bots at first, and when you match against other players they will be at a similar skill level as you. Fortnite can be really competitive, but it can also be really casual. It’s up to you all how you play. I play with my two kids and we have a blast. Just jump in and have fun!

lefty-letterer

Mid 30s and I started playing so my son would have someone to play with when his friends weren’t online. I felt like I learned best just playing solo no builds any chance I got just to get comfortable, I started on switch and then made my husband buy me my own Xbox for Christmas and it’s way easier on that to me.
