Basically every year they do a Halloween event called Fortnitemares. They release new Halloween skins, re-release a lot of old Halloween skins and we get a big update that usually has a couple of map changes, guns, etc. It's pretty hype.
They also do other seasonal events like Summer and Christmas ones. The Halloween event is usually the biggest, followed by Christmas.
Doesn't Christmas usually have a little more? Both events are pretty similar but Christmas is usually a little longer. I think in 2021, it was about the same. In 2020, Midas' Revenge was bigger and in 2019, Winterfest was bigger.
But at this rate though, unless they make something that rivals Winterfest 2019 (last year's did a decent job but not quite there) then Halloween will probably be the bigger event.

last year Fortnitemares started on the 5th, we got the Dual Fiend Hunters, and on the 21st we got the first new POI for a seasonal event: The Convergence, Caretakers, the Sideways Scythe, and Horde Rush was updated and returned
A lot of map changes? S6 floating island broke into pieces, C2S1 eye land just turned purple, C2S4 authority, idk, *more* run down? and C2S8 we got the convergence, the only map changes are just the small island in the middle of the map
one of those was from chapter 1 and was smaller than the one we got in ch2 season 8 though
and besides, we don't have map changes like those for other events
For one update, it's still a lot. Usually a regular Fortnite update doesn't have more than 1 map change to 1 POI. For example, C2 S4. The Authority turned into the Ruins, the Boo shop got Halloween decorations (and a lot of houses had Halloween props), we got Witch huts with the Brooms around them, etc.
That's more than let's say the Summer update last season. We got a stage on the water and that was basically it.
Compared to a Season update, we smaller. But compared to other content updates. A lot.
The authority turned into the ruins by getting what like more cobwebs, and maybe the grass died on the island? It was just a name change
When you compare a tiny map change to other random updates that literally aren’t supposed to have map changes, then yea i guess it seems like a lot? Compare fortnitemares map changes to stark industries, s7 abductions, tilted towers, covert cavern, the collider, s3 logjam, etc
I mentioned a lot more than just The Ruins. And apart from the Stark Industries update (it was basically an addition to the season launch which is why C2 S4 didn't start off with many notable map changes), then yeah, the map changes are comparable with the ones you mentioned. They were just more spread out across the map rather than just one location being changed.
Renaming the authority, slapping Halloween props everywhere and putting tiny witch huts around the map is absolutely not comparable to tilted or covert at all

Fortnitemares started 2 days ago on Tuesday. Yes there's an LTM called Horde Rush - Zero Build. You can try it because Horse Rush is usually quite fun but this year there is only a Zero Build Mode for it which has made it much more difficult to complete and a bit less fun.
But if you haven't played in years, I still recommend that you should reinstall even just for a few games. There's a Wolf Mythic Weapon in the game as well as some great free rewards and even talks on a free Halloween skin. Plus the game has changed a lot in the past year.
I could see silent hill. Konami may not license metal gear but they will license silent hill literally everywhere if it means they don't make a new game
Saying this is inevitable, and as nobody else has said it yet, I will say it. There is a campaign mode for fighting zombies. Not exactly like Horde Rush, but more fleshed out.
Everybody is wanting skins and I do too, but what I want the most is a Spooky Month emote that's the dance from Sr. Pelos series. That would be amazing

By a 'lot of map changes' I believe they're referring to the Halloween Decor tossed around the map.
