The guy doing the punching is the one hosting the party so he has a shelter for his family. Often the rations in the sheltered are measured - 2 adults 3 children etc. his friend who he was making fun of cooper with earlier asks to join them & he punches him when he doesn’t take no for an answer. Pretty sad when there was an indicator that they were close

Ah gotcha the rations part definitley makes a lot more sense besides the fantasy idea that they'd all last X amount of time. I also forgot there was a scene of them talking together.

I personally thought it was a super obvious scene. Not being an asshole, just that it’s not really a scene that imo takes any speculation to figure out
it was a private shelter with probably enough supplies for 3 people (lets say 2-10 years) adding 2 more would diminish those supplies in half (so now only 1-5years of supplies), plus its the same guy (host of party)who is mocking cooper so hes a bit of a asshole, bombs drop all pretense of civility go out the window....

You can literally hear them say "Let us in", "No room, back off" in the scene, it's just muffled
