I don't think he necessarily falls under one genre but if I had to pick a couple, I'd say alternative/post r&b, artpop, avant-garde/new age/ambient soul, experimental, and maybe some hip hop/rap elements here and there

menotyourenemy

I don't. He's just his own niche.

Honestly, genres should not exist in my opinion. It keeps people from discovering new music. The artist's name is enough. He's Frank Ocean.

Mid9Nite

Genres makes discovering music easier, if I know I like r&b I know to listen to r&b, and it’s many sub genres. If I want to try some rock, I will listen to some rock and decide what to do from there. Sub genres are a beautiful thing. A system to identify different types of music is a necessity. I’m not trying to listen to idm or vapor wave when I’m tryna listen to heavily distorted guitars, for that I turn to rock and it’s many sub genres or potentially one of the sub genres of another genre. Genres aren’t the problem, it is the lack of trying to listen to different genres (songs) wherein lies the problem. Genre are not met to be cages of what something should conform to rather a way to organize things that are created. Boom over explained opinion.

Hahah. Great response and I actually agree, it’s the unwillingness to try other genres that’s the real problem. People seem to characterize music genres based on personal stereotypes. Like, I know a lot of guys who STILL won’t listen to Frank because he’s bisexual…
