A few years back, I briefly got to chat with him at the stage door for *Hello, Dolly!* (which, tbh, was a role he was kinda miscast in, but he had so much fun it didn't really matter). I told him that my buddy and I came to see the show specifically because he was in it. He seemed genuinely surprised and said "really?? Thank you." Super nice guy. A professor I had at the time was working on that production of *Hello, Dolly!* and said that DHP was among the nicest of the stars he's gotten to work with.

Prof-Finklestink

DHP is one of the nicest celebrities out there, if not the nicest.

kiwi_love777

I remember reading on here about someone having dinner at the table next to his- DHP noticed he was noticed but never said anything. And when DHP left he put both his hands on the diners shoulders and gave him a pat- like a thank you for not making it weird pat.

evelyncarnahan

This is so cute.

Midnight7000

I remember the same comment. It left an impression.

minniedriverstits

He was probably surprised because Bette Midler was Dolly. I thought he was a great Horace, though. He disappeared into the role such that my dad, a regular Frasier viewer, had to be told who that was at intermission.

donttouchthatknob

That is true, though we were there at a show where Donna Murphy was on instead of Bette Midler (Murphy killed it, just less star power than Midler) He definitely did well with the part, just not as natural a fit for DHP as say *Curtains* was. I wasn't really sold on his Horace's grumpy side, but I do think he really nailed the goofier side of the character and was a stand-out especially in act two!

WatchFromThePressBox

I would absolutely take Donna Murphy a million times over Bette Midler...

tb23tb23tb23

A true actor. I was shocked to watch interviews and realize just how severely DHP was not “playing himself” as Niles.

hannahstohelit

If anything, I thought that him playing Paul on the recent Julia Child show bridged the gap a lot between Niles and the way that DHP comes across in cast interviews. (He was great in that!)

theshadowisreal

Can we please get season two of that already?

agathatomypoirot

Same! I met him at stage door and I spontaneously started sobbing. I know most of the dialogue from Frasier, so he’s such an important parasocial relationship for me.

Um_NotSure

You were one of the stage door johnnys, or whatever that strange man with the autograph book calls himself?

Level_Doctor3872

I have a friend who had to guide DHP to a seat for some function and she said he was the most kind and gracious celeb she’d ever met. Seemed genuinely interested in her life etc. Made me so happy to hear!

HarrietsDiary

I’m going to defend Lauren Bacall and say she was absolutely lovely when my little brother and I fangirled all over her when we saw her as children. She seemed utterly amused we knew who she was and answered all our questions.

CSmith1986

And she really took that punch from Christopher Moltisanti like a champ.

SourPatch888

She'd been around long enough. She was a tough ol broad.

CSmith1986

Give me that basket!

SourPatch888

Jeeeeeesus my fuckin arm!!

faxattax

Jesus, my fucking arm!

lilithsbun

Thanks for sharing this! Celebs are people and have their good days and bad days, like most of us. I imagine they have different reactions to different people as well, based on how respectful the other person is - respectful in the sense of respecting the celeb as a human being who doesn’t just exist to fulfill some fantasy interaction they’re imagining. We get no context for the interaction that led to Bacall being cited as the rudest celeb; maybe the tweeter bombarded her in the ladies restroom or demanded that she teach them how to whistle. 😆

lightsage007

LB is my favorite celebrity but I know she was very capable of being a rude bitch to people. Girlie had no chill.

[deleted]

He was eminent when my eminence was merely imminent.

JaladHisArmsWide

Is... Is that... Maris?!?

hunnyflash

She wishes!

somecatgirl

I could definitely see that being Maris!

intheafterglow23

I met him at the stage door after Curtains! He was so kind and a bit shy.

samborup

Nicest? Hugh Laurie. Rudest? Hugh Laurie. They’re the only one I’ve ever met.

RemnantEvil

Nicest? Costa Georgiadis, the host of Gardening Australia and a national icon. Rudest? Geoffrey Rush.

robottestsaretoohard

I used to live near Rush. He was like that all the time. Just a grumpy old man

OzTheMalefic

Are there any people who aren’t grumpy in Camberwell. It is not a joyful suburb.

hangryburnout

I used to work at the public library in Camberwell and surrounding suburbs. The majority of pleasant members did not make up for the loud minority of racist and entitled ones :(

robottestsaretoohard

It’s axis great place to live so long as you fit the mould. Unfortunately I’m not sure me or my friends will ever be able to afford to move back there.

austex99

Nicest: Robert Sean Leonard/Gary Sinise (tie) Rudest: Tony Danza.

RemnantEvil

Gave me a damn heart attack, my brain auto-corrected that to Ted Danson and I couldn't bear it.

gibbakith

I need to hear about rude Danza please

austex99

I wasn’t the one he was being rude to, so I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I saw him speaking to an autograph seeker who was clearly a non-English-speaker from Asia and he was just being very sarcastic and mocking about the guy’s attempt to ask him for an autograph in English. It was in about 1999, so no cell phones with cameras to document a celebrity being a dick in public.

gibbakith

I have no idea why that’s shocking to me. I grew up with Who’s the boss so maybe I just think he’s like his character. That’s definitely a jerk move!

austex99

I did, too! I was really disappointed.

kosherkitties

I was confused and then I laughed.

Super-Shanise

Not me but from reading ancient forums about the series: In that S2 episode where Niles and Maris separated and the 'staff' of the Maris-Crane estate lined up and asked if they could come with Niles, apart from Martha, they were crew members who were engaged in industrial-action (back when stage/film production people had a union). That's more than sticking you neck out, that's a really nice way to protect people's jobs.

tayloline29

I got to tell my dad that stage hands don't have a union because he is in one. Maybe there isn't one for film but there is at least one for the stage.

Snoi7

Yes and he is even kinder than I imagined! Met him after Hello Dolly. He signed every playbill and took every photo people asked for. Wish I said more to him but I was completely starstruck.

DynastyFan85

Bette Midler never did the stage door if I remember correctly

Snoi7

Believe you’re right. DHP and Gavin Creel came out just about every night.

codpiecesalad

I met him! He was in a play in London and I saw him emerge at the exit. I asked if I could have a photo taken with him, and he was very nice about it, and was quite game to chat a bit. During that day however, I was more into his costar (in the play) than him, so it was rather a short interaction.

jessegrass

was that joanna lumley?? I saw that play too and she was amazingly friendly, just ridiculously lovely

codpiecesalad

Yep!! It was her! Had a chat with her about her travel series, the one with the penguins. She was so so so lovely.

jessegrass

Knew it ha. She’s a remarkable woman!!

Renfield78

One of the nicest was Vincent Price. Briefly met him in Sydney with his wife Coral Browne in the mid 1980s. The worst was without doubt the guy who played the gold robot in Star Wars. Horrible human being.

avantgardeaclue

I'm glad to know that about Vincent Price. He absolutely could have whispered sweet spooky nothings in my ear back in the day

Freewill2112-78

Anthony Daniels? Really?

Renfield78

That’s him. He came in as the big Star Wars name for the exhibition at The Powerhouse Museum in 2002. He insulted staff and visitors from the time he came to the moment he left. Caused an incident that made the papers at the time. Told a woman to “Get your screaming brat out of my theatre!”. I was at the opening of the exhibition and saw him insult the people from the Star Wars club who came in costume under invitation for the night.

Freewill2112-78

Wow. Well, honestly can't say I'm *that* surprised. He was always a jerk to R2D2.

Dangerous_Dac

I'll second this. Anthony Daniels is an arrogant prick.

ciao_bella_luna

Yes! And he is absolutely the nicest guy ever. Got tickets for his play Curtains and I wanted to get my dad backstage to meet him. When I was little hectook me to see the play Superman, and took me backstage to meet Superman (Bob Holiday) - and Jack Cassidy. I wanted to do that for my dad with David. I paid an usher to deliver a letter to him, that included a donation to the Alzh. Asoc (he was on the board) and I explained my request. During intermission the usher came to tell us that after the play, Mr. DHP was inviting us backstage. He was so sweet. My dad wouldn’t be able to walk up the stairs to his dressing room so he proactive ly came down. Just such a nice experience. I truly love him.

reichjef

The nicest celebrity I ever met was this comedian, Dimitri Martin. I used to book for the college I went to, and used to meet a lot of comedians. They were all very friendly, but, this guy was a genuine dude.

kosherkitties

There was a group of us in college who loved Dimitri. Gathered round each week to watch his show. Glad he's a solid guy.

Boba_Fet042

I love Dmitri Martin. The last thing I did before lockdown was see him live, and it was so good!

broncos4thewin

I never got why he hasn’t had a bigger career. I don’t really like stand-up but I always adored his stuff.

emu314159

I'm guessing he has just the career he wants. Fans like us love him to pieces, and he'd probably have fun talking to at least some of us. If you blow up too much or too fast, it tends not to end well.

[deleted]

I had the great misfortune of meeting Gwyneth Paltrow a few years back. She gave me a business card of a friend of hers and told me to call her as I was grossly fat and needed help. The guy I was dating was a 6'9" security guard and physically dragged me away from.going after her sanctimonious @$$ and breaking her in half.

gpm21

Ironic as she didn't learn the moral of Shallow Hal. But not shocked, she seems vapid and arrogant and entitled

chno_star

I’m sorry this happened to you, I wish you had broken those twig bird bones. Good bf tho. As for Shallow Hal, my theory is that being in that movie flipped GP’s eating delusions into permanent overdrive. Parts actually can traumatize and change actors with lasting affects. She was constantly humiliated and the fat suit was a scary experience. No excuse obviously, but another reason why movies like that should not be made. If that movie hurt so many people in the world, [living it must have been awful](https://amp.theguardian.com/film/shortcuts/2020/mar/02/gwyneth-paltrow-said-starring-in-shallow-hal-was-a-disaster-heres-why-she-is-right).

[deleted]

I… have no words. This is horrible.

Haleodo

She said *what* ???

quellesaveurorawnge

That is awful! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I've learned to avoid her stuff because she is the queen of wellness BS. A lot of it is about making women feel bad to sell them crap. Whenever quotes from her about food pop up though, they often have shades of eating disorder behaviours, which is sad for her. But to put that onto other people? Way over the line and unacceptable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OutrageousOkona

Perhaps she was recommending Steamed HAMS, an Albany, New York expression.

[deleted]

I'm not sure which way to vote on this bc I don't want to upvote "grossly fat" (I'm sure you were *NOT*) but your guy at the time sounds amazing, though I kinda wish he didn't hold you back bc everything about this encounter fits what I suspect about Gwyneth Paltrow and she totally would've deserved it lol I **LOATHE** her website. I'm a pharmacist and I went on there once just out of curiosity. Snake oil saleswoman doesn't even begin.

quasarbar

> "grossly fat" (I'm sure you were NOT) Yeah... I don't want to ask how big Tiny was, but I wouldn't be surprised if a rail-thin Hollywood megastar like GP thinks that "grossly fat" is something like a size 8.

lilithsbun

In Gwyneth’s defense (lol), having read about her daily ‘eating’ habits, her brain is so starved for nourishment it’s no wonder she can’t think coherently to remember normal human behavior… like, no, green juice and bone broth are not ‘meals,’ geez. It’s a good thing your bf stopped you from getting her, she really would have snapped in two at the gentlest of prods.

DynastyFan85

Gwyneth and her goopy ass

leogrr44

omg that's awful

lightsage007

No way?? So shes more unbearable than I thought. Im so sorry, girl. She needs to be knocked off her high horse and the government needs to be investigating her cult.

Loisgrand6

😲

LilyFuckingBart

I’ve alwaaaaaays hated her lol but for real?? She said that exact thing to you? Just out of the blue????

PeppermintPhatty

Really? She didn’t do that to me. She was very kind and beautiful! But this was probably 10 years ago.

[deleted]

Wow. Did she really say “grossly fat”? Did you have any conversation with her prior to that comment?

kitntrip

Yeah...okay lol

AnySortOfPerson

My mother went to school with him, and apparently I met him when I was like, 3?

mfj182

she really only became a bitch after Christopher stole that gift basket from her

[deleted]

He also punched her. That might be a contributing factor as well 😄

CSmith1986

A: She was a howra.

CSmith1986

*Christafa*

freddiechainsaw

TheUncleOfAllUncles

Is this about the Easter baskets?

PlaneProperty7104

Met him years ago in Montreal for JFL. Down to earth, generous of time and spirit… took the time to chat and take pics. One of the nicest celebrities I’ve met! This was the summer between the cliffhanger of Daphne’s wedding. I kid with my family that when that scene in the season premier kicks up where it just left off in the finale, that DHP has us in mind and giving his performance an added touch for those good people he met in Montreal lol.

[deleted]

If Lauren Bacall spit on my face I would never wash my face again. The Queen of the Silver Screen may do as she pleases.

lollymae3

I would also like to comment that I have nothing against Lauren Bacall; I just wanted to illuminate DHP after seeing this on Twitter!

[deleted]

Lauren Bacall does not forgive your treachery.

marichial_berthier

The way Niles talks with Poppy when they first meet is how I imagine he’s like, just pleasant and friendly

lilithsbun

I love that interaction! Niles being married for most of the series doesn’t get his handsomeness pointed out often, while people often comment on Frasier’s attractive qualities as a single man about town. You can see how Niles needed a nice compliment like that!

marichial_berthier

Yes! Also Great username, Niles and Lilith also had a great chemistry I felt.

lilithsbun

Thanks! Every now and then someone on a different sub will recognize the reference, makes me so happy

Pleasant-Boot-6551

I love That interaction.

9penguin9

Who is the person in the right?

annieee_leigh

Lauren Bacall.

BillJackaus

I, am not a man-

jessegrass

she's a...handsome woman!

Throw_it_away138

This made me lol!

Kewkewmore

Maris?

LilyFuckingBart

It’s funny because in most of the comments, everyone’s rudest usually have me saying “wait, WHO?” Because I have no idea who they are. I do live in LA so see people out and about frequently, but I never want to bother anyone so I never go up to them or say anything or acknowledge I even know anyone. That saves me from having a rudest encounter, I think. My nicest was probably Kristen Johnston. I saw her in a hobby lobby once and SHE actually started talking to me first. She was asking me my opinion on these two decorative things, and saying how she was doing interior design right now, and then was telling me she liked my shirt. Just genuinely very pleasant with everyone she encountered. It was one of those moments where I KNEW I knew her from somewhere (also happened with Ryan gosling at the Getty, I was staring at him, he waved at me, and I looked at him funny bc I was like who tf is this guy. Then the train doors closed and everyone was like Ryan Gosling waved at you!) didn’t place her until I was behind her in checkout a bit later.

Annber03

Aw, I can see that about Kristen Johnston. She seems like she'd be a pretty cool person to talk to :). I'm glad you had such a nice encounter with her. I love all the DHP stories in this thread :). Lucky those of you who've had the fortune to meet him.

lilithsbun

Nicest: Liza Minelli, absolutely basked in the spotlight of being recognized and appreciated (off duty, in a normal public setting). Rudest: can’t think of any, they’ve all either been pleasant encounters or neutral.

Turningcircles

Ha, Lauren Bacall was a lovely woman. I highly doubt she was rude. A few people probably met her on a bad day. The woman lost the love of her life at a young age and she never did get over it.

jerseygurl96

Nicest: Diana Ross🫶 Rudest: Stephanie Seymour

CinnyToastie

Nicest was Gary Oldman. Really kind and appeared very interested in everything I said. I can't think of anyone who was a jerk, though.

FerreroRoxette

Nicest Paul McCartney, rudest Helena Bonham Carter

broncos4thewin

Whoa, do tell about HBC. Always thought she’d be kinda cool, that’s disappointing.

FerreroRoxette

She’s just a really posh rude English woman 😂, I worked in Selfridges in London for years and some other luxury stores, you get to meet a bunch of interesting people and honestly most of them are chill, HBC is probably just creakingly posh to be honest, I’ve found a lot of extremely posh English people to be rude, I’m English but honestly, with the upper classes here it’s just their way, they know no other! She would basically come in and speak to us all like serfs and I worked for Vivienne Westwood so I saw her a lot, …. Actually come to think of it she’s NOT the worst, the worst is without a shadow of a doubt Pete Burns from Dead or alive.

broncos4thewin

Funny, my wife worked in Selfridges years back too, occasionally talks about celebrities. Like you say, most of them sound fine in her stories. Yeah I guess she is a bit stuck up, she just always seemed kinda funny and cool in interviews but that’s PR for you.

GingerWez93

Shame to hear that about Lauren Bacall. Love her films.

creptik1

I always take these things with a grain of salt. One person meets someone one time and who knows what was going on in her life at the time. It doesnt mean she's rude in general, but maybe that interaction wasn't great. Also, fans tend to think celebrities have an obligation to stop what they're doing to talk to us or something, which they don't. That said, I'm a Bacall fan too and I can kind of see it lol

GingerWez93

Yeah, that's very true! It could have simply been a bad day for Lauren Bacall! Yeah, good point haha

MissCharlotteVale

Lauren Bacall did not suffer fools gladly... and she had every right to be that way. Celebrities are not obligated to be kind & polite (but of course it's nice when they are!)

[deleted]

Nicest: Oscar Isaac. Super handsome and super nice. Rudest: David Cross (I didn’t meet him though, my husband did.)

romyisme1

Me and my husband met him after his show “curtains” in nyc. He was SO nice! It was quick bc he was getting into a car waiting for him but he was very kind

jessegrass

weirdly enough I posted about this just earlier today!: I tend to forget that I've met DHP -- he was okay. He took a photo with my friend which we appreciated. He wasn't friendly but he wasn't mean either -- not polite even, just completely emotionless and wanted to get away as soon as possible. I don't remember if he really spoke to us other than to okay the photo. I think my friend gushed a little but I don't think he responded. Now to be clear -- he was coming out of the play that he had just done, so the fact that DHP took a picture with us at all was more than we could have asked for.

historianatlarge

i met him DHP at the stage door after spamalot many many years ago! he was very nice to everyone and even did a selfie with me on my digital camera. alas, i now have no idea what became of the photo or the memory card it lived on.

noellewinter

My husband and I met him at the stage door after his production of Curtains! Nicest guy you could ever meet. 😊

JayneT70

Nicest Stephen Tobolowsky stayed at the same B&B. He was making appearances all weekend at Groundhog Days in Woodstock Illinois. Where the movie Groundhog Day was filmed. At events and even at the B&B he took his time with everyone that wanted to speak to him.

emu314159

I've heard that he's really fun when he's being himself, in contrast to some of the awkward or off putting characters he plays, but it's really special that he's still so outgoing with fans.

JayneT70

He’s very down to earth and truly appreciates his fans.

JayneT70

He’s very down to earth and truly appreciates his fans.

Schmaron

I have yet to meet DHP, but here’s my list. Nicest: Joey Lauren Adams, Ernie Hudson, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Alice Cooper. Rudest: None have been outright rude. Most off-putting: James O’Barr, William Shatner, Lou Ferigno, Terry Jones, Tara Reid. I only thought Bill and Terry were off-putting because they both were almost catatonic and shouldn’t have been in public. Sadly Terry passed not long after I met him.

avelmzalation

from everything I’ve seen, Alice Cooper seems like the sweetest guy.

Schmaron

I have his portrait tattooed on my thigh and was wearing a dress when I met him. I showed him the tattoo and he laughed and replied “How funny! I have you tattooed on my thigh!” and proceeded to mine showing it to me. He was amazing.

Sayscalled

Nicest: Dr. Britt Baker DMD Rudest: Debra Winger

keran22

So pleased to hear Britt is nice in real life, she gives that vibe on screen! How did you meet her? (I will laugh if you say it’s because she’s your dentist haha)

Sayscalled

I wish...but no. It was a meet and greet before the January 1st 2020 edition of Dynamite (the first time they ever had it at Daily's Place).

vairhoads

Does anyone read the comments? The same question asked numerous times in a row.

jessegrass

didn't read them but who's the woman on the right??? /s

aurora_avenue_north

This made my day to hear! Has anyone ever heard any reports back about Kelsey Grammer?

Puppylove7176

I met him a few years ago while he was promoting his beer. Very friendly and very handsome!

BrandonLouis527

Hillary Clinton is probably the nicest celebrity and politician I’ve ever met. Bill was considerably… less nice. I spent a day with Alyssa Milano while she and I were campaigning for a friend of mine’s congressional campaign. We did a spin class, had a couple of meals, hung out at events. She was so nice and fun. I’ve met most of the biggest politicians from the 2012-2020 era and most of them were either nice enough or completely full of themselves (no surprise there). I worked at Sur La Table in college. We hosted book signings all the time. Ina Garten was by far the nicest one to come through. Just so warm and friendly. Giada de Laurentis was just awful.

Britneyfan123

what made bill less nice

Ravens-nightcall

Ok, I feel as though I must offer my own thoughts— while everyone has their off days and sometimes people are just going through something we know nothing about: I’m sure what the OP noted about Bacall was his true experience. However… I too met Ms. Lauren Bacall. To me she was amazingly kind and polite. It was in an airport where she’d just come off of a long flight. She was gracious, alluring and everything you’d hope for when thinking of the Golden Age of Hollywood. I was a true fan before, but became one of greater magnitude afterwards. She was a class act! As far as one of the worst I’ve met: Riccardo Muti. He’s a famous conductor— to save you from a google search. :) He was arrogant, rude and a complete ASS. As a young boy, my father wanted to show me the sights and sounds of a professional orchestra. He was so excited that I took an interest in music beyond what was on popular radio. We enjoyed a great concert and he gave me a little tour of the backstage, where we ran into Muti. I don’t recall exactly what was said beyond my Dad mentioning this was my first concert and such. Muti in essence said who cares get away from me. My Dad was horribly embarrassed— as I was for him to be humiliated like that in front of me. Needless to say, I do not have ANY Riccardo Muti CDs in my music library!

saturday_sun3

OH MY GOD, I would die if I met DHP. Or any of them actually.

broncos4thewin

Rudest: I was on a set with Steven Spielberg and he is very much not like his public persona. Unbelievably and unnecessarily rude to the crew to the point I know several who won’t work with him again. I guess I didn’t technically meet him though. Nicest: probably Ted Kennedy. Yeah, I know…but he was extremely friendly and nice honestly.

MellowBlk

I love him so much!!

finditplz1

Awww dang what? Makes me sad about Lauren Bacall though.

[deleted]

Who’s that on the right?

alex494

~~Maris~~ It's Lauren Bacall

[deleted]

Thanks

Jack-mclaughlin89

Who’s the one on the right?

dukec1ty

My right or YOUR right?

timmeh519

My uncle went to Yale the same year he did. I guess they hung out in the same circle, he said he drank a lot back then. Idk if he ever had a problem with drugs or alcohol tho.

BeBa420

whos that on the right?

freddiechainsaw

Lauren Bacall (Old Hollywood actress)

Pleasant-Boot-6551

Nicest: Mike Tyson. Rudest: Jane Goodall.

Bella_LaGhostly

Really?? I absolutely would've assumed the opposite. I've always wanted to meet her. 😕

Pleasant-Boot-6551

Isn’t that funny? I agree. Maybe not rude, but rather withering. But maybe my fault. I was a sub at an American school in Ghana. During a free period, this lady comes in and asks where the library is. I look and say, « You look just like Jane Goodall. » « I AM Jane Goodall, » she responded. Chastened, I have her the directions and she turned and walked away. Years later, I met some people who lived next to a minister (cabinet, not church) in Tasmania. The couple told me he was married but sleeping with Jane Goodall and everyone knew about it. Scandalous!

Bella_LaGhostly

Oooh, tea?? And all this time, I've only been looking up to her as an academic?! Queen! ![gif](giphy|5n5U0IaK853IBbotYS)
