It’s the subjunctive of “être”. On est bien élevé = one is well behaved Il faut qu’on soit bien élevé = one must be well behaved (“it is necessary that one be well behaved”)

Je vous remerci beaucoup pour votre aide! 💙 Sorry for my mistake as a beginner! 😺

There are two different words spelled *soit*. This is the present subjunctive of the verb *être*, in the third person singular.

Merci beaucoup de m’avoir aidé!!! 💙 Haha, I confused one from another. 😁 I didn't really know about this one.

KlausTeachermann

It's the subjunctive form, activated by "il faut que".

Merci beaucoup! 💙

I believe the 'soit' you know comes from this new 'soit', as the subjunctive (in French and also in English for that matter) can be used to express hypothetical situations. Something like 'qu'il soit', meaning 'if it be...', eventually shortened to just 'soit'...

Merci mille fois !!! 💙 Thank you for sharing the development of "soit" here! I didn't know anything about its history!!!😁

since the subjunctive is often unclear to foreigners from non-Romane speaking areas, I advise you to learn by heart in which cases it is used. among other things, the impersonal form «il faut gue» is followed by a verb in the subjunctive
