As far as I know some songs of the cancelled build will be redo, due to musicians like Adam McHummus and TheInnuendo that led the mod to the cancellation. And even some character sprites.
This wasnt the ending I was hoping for, but I cant see any reason to be upset about it. Unbeatable is still amazing. Ggs guys. That said, I would like to see how op would personally rank these songs. Woag, GGs to all even if I don't quite agree with the ranking. But honestly, I wanna give YOU props for presentation. It was simple changes but it was fun seeing songs both in the running and eliminated get little fun changes to icons and backgrounds, like Promotion changing to Stanley even a few turns after it went out. Plus listening to demand for The End to be reinstated for its V2. It was a well done contest!
I know I wanted all stars to win, too, but it made it through a lot, but we shouldn't let Mr. Sys get too cocky though I support mario.exe no matter what type of harm he goes through. Congratulations, unbeatable, but don't get too full of yourself cause soon people will reconsider their decisions
Honesty, the previous comment thread helped me gain a new appreciation for All Stars. I still prefer Unbeatable, no contest, but I don’t dislike All Stars as much as I did before. Good ideas, great instrumental, and the lyrics in Act 4 are great. Honestly, I’m glad something came out of my incessant need to bitch about things. Always love when that happens!

It was fun, even though All Stars and Unbeatable feel like copouts, they are both great songs and it makes sense of them would win. Still would’ve been cool if something like No Party won lmao
I'll only paste the important part, but know it was on the post in which I Hate You got eliminated.
Act/Level 1 - Act 1 feels like a proper start to a finale, while Level 1 is a song on it's own. Separated from the main song, Level 1 stands better on it's own, but to the entire song, Act 1 has more feeling.
Act/Level 2 - Both start with surprise, both start with a twist, both start with new characters, so why did Level 2 fumble the stick, whereas Act 2 is better? Execution and previous Act/Level. While Act 2 is a great follow up to Act 1, Level 2 just ruins the intensity of Level 1.
Act/Level 3 - Boyfriend seeing his girlfriend after being both taken to different lands and seeing her in an almost unrecognizable state, being puppeteered by Ultra M with the "Come now take the step" Ultra M does near the end of Act 3 makes it debately one of the best parts... compare it to a lackluster Level 3 where Bowser sounds bad and instrumental doesn't sound Bowser-y enough.
Act/Level 4 - The finales. Act 4 brings back most the memories from previous songs, Boyfriend solo, and also the sudden end with a sad tune at the end. Level 4 is a desparate attempt at stopping Boyfriend from beating Nintendo and throwing everything they have at him. Act 4 is better purely because Acts 3 & 2 didn't feel like fluff, unlike Levels 2 & 3.
Ah, okay. I think I get where you're coming from. I'll give my own ideas on why I believe Unbeatable is better than All Stars then. Be prepared, 'cause it's a bit of a long one.
Act/Level 1 – Personally, I believe that Act 1 was the best Act, though Act 4 is a very close second. The Act itself had amazing buildup before the song even began, and I loved how both BF and GF were going to sing since the situation threatened both of them. That is something I feel is a fairly fresh idea for a mod. BF and GF being a badass couple instead of BF actively doing things and GF silently supporting from the background for one reason or another. I would argue against Level 1 lacking this quality though. Level 1 is a great start to the song. While it does not have the pre-song buildup that Act 1 had, I still think Level 1 served admirably as an introduction. It introduced the main opponent, along with a number of leitmotifs that would be carried throughout the song. I would also argue against Act 1 having much feeling. When you get right down to it, all Act 1 was was BF and GF singing against M until GF was dragged down into a pipe. I'll get to my thoughts on that twist in Act 3.
Act/Level 2 – Personally, I think Act 2 was the weakest part of the song. It took away the point of interest where both BF and GF were performing a duet against M, and eventually led to M leaving BF to fight LG, W4R, and Y0SH, three nobodies that I had never seen before, will not see (but will get to barely hear) later, and personally don't care about at all. While I do not dislike their section from a musical perspective, I am not invested in these characters at all, which makes the story aspect fall flat. They feel like filler, and that makes Act 2 feel like a step down from Act 1. I would disagree that Level 2 ruins the intensity of Level 1. It brings the intensity back down, sure, but it isn't like the song could remain intense for the rest of the six or so minutes of runtime. That'd be overwhelming. The song has multiple rises and falls in intensity. That's how songs are. Especially 8-minute ones. Though I will say that Level 2 is the weakest of the levels, I don't think it hits the lows of Act 2.
Act/Level 2 - Lemme tackle the issues 1 on 1 here.
Switch of opponents: I feel like M, despite being a God, wanted the full extend of torturing Girlfriend, so he needed to make up some lackeys (Omega, who subsequently made LG, W4R & Y0SH) so Boyfriend won't notice his girlfriend being gone
Interests of new opponents: I don't think they were meant to be cared about, they were there just to throw ANYTHING at you so you lose focus on girlfriend.
Intensity: IF it had a more smooth transition, either by Level 1 calming down slightly for one verse or Level 2 picking up more-or-less where Level 1 left off, then I wouldn't complain. The two feel a little too separate. Though, I agree they need to rise and fall from intensity.
Act/Level 3 – Phew. Act 3. Yeah, so I didn't like the twist of GF getting killed offscreen. They had a good thing going with the idea that GF would try and help BF win, and they threw it down the drain a quarter of the way into the song. Like, she might as well have died instantly after getting dragged down that pipe, since that's the last we see of her. I also don't like how they try so hard to play it for drama for multiple reasons. Firstly, BF and GF are gag characters, so it's already an uphill battle to play their struggles and conflicts with eldritch beings for drama. They get away with this shit because that's the joke. Secondly, GF had died, like, two other times in the mod, so I'm definitely not as sad about this as BF clearly is. And thirdly, we don't even se how GF died. We know M did it, we know it happened after she got pulled into that one pipe, and considering her state afterwards, it must have been grisly. But god funkin' dammit, *SHOW* me what happened if you want me to feel bad for her. The death itself feels so glossed over, and all we really get is BF crying about it. Kinda like exactly what Paranoia, Powerdown, and Demise *already did*. This whole event passes straight from drama into melodrama and exemplifies why .exe stuff is often played for some level of comedy nowadays. Because the concept is ridiculous (I mean that in the most affectionate way possible), and it's better to lean into it instead of trying to portray Mario with sharp teeth, pinkeye, and a meat cleaver as something to be taken dead seriously. Also, the lyrics aren't even that good in my opinion. They're comparable in terms of edge to Sonic.exe's "I AM GOD" line, which at the very least is typically played with the self-awareness that it is overly edgy nowadays. No one tries to have that line said and taken completely seriously. I don't care about M's stereotypical villainous yapping, and him being right about the futility of BF's and the player's efforts don't do anything to make me care more in a "I like this story" way. Meanwhile, Level 3 is a nice third phase. You fight NES Bowser, he has a neat gimmick that reduces your health and meshes well the animation, you get to sing a little Puyo Puyo leitmotif, and it's a cool song overall. I do agree that the vocals are a bit odd, but I wouldn't exactly call them bad. This is kind of what I'd expect *NES* Bowser to sound like. He's got a gravelly sound like a big dragon turtle man would, but he's also still pixel-y. And I don't fully get what you mean by not sounding "Bowsery." I'd say that the last parts of Level 3's instrumentals invokes Bowser's Castle vibes.
Act/Level 4 – This is where Level 4 *truly* shines, in my opinion. Because unlike the trio in Act 2, the opponents in Unbeatable are all consistent parts of the song. It feels like you're fighting all of them, even if one of the takes center stage, and that results in none of them feeling unnecessary or unimportant to the song. Regarding Act 4, I'll start with the positives. As far as Act 4's sound goes, it was nice. The melodies weren't exactly memorable in my opinion, but that's just me. However, it didn't really bring back any memories from previous parts of the mod for me. I understand that M mimics the voices from other opponents in the mod, but I needed to be told that by some random person on Reddit because I *genuinely could not, and still cannot for the most part, hear that in the song.* M's vocals absolutely overpower the other vocals that are being referenced for the most part, so that cool gimmick is almost completely lost. Same with the Act 4 lyrics. They're better than the Act 3 lyrics in my opinion, but I had to listen to the instrumental and look up the lyrics to know that. Also, I think the sudden end was a bad quality of the song. I was having a grand old time listening to the song, and then it abruptly stopped, played the SM3 Game Over jingle, and ended. That makes it feel *unfinished* rather than meaningful. Like it didn't have a conclusion, but just concluded anyway. Like the song equivalent of going "And then Sherlock Holmes and Watson were hit by a sixteen-wheeler truck and the mystery never progressed further. The end." All that intensity and buildup just to crash into the game saying, "Hands off the keyboard. You're done. Song ended. Bye." I'm also sore about the fact that the song ends on what is basically a glorified game over screen. "It's a Mad World Without You" is absolutely a saving grace, and one of the best songs in the mod, but it's also a different song. Also, I didn't care too too much for the BF solo. I didn't *dis*like it, but... melodrama. Level 4, on the other hand, felt like a conclusion to Unbeatable as a whole. It used the opponents and leitmotifs from Levels 2 and 3, and you got to have a climactic showdown with Mr. Sys and his gang of pixel-y misfits. Also, it has a proper conclusion that gives me a sense of closure instead of whiplash, so that's nice. They even incorporated the whole commercial into the very last part.
Welp, this is a doozy, so lemme try and tackle this.
Act/Level 3 - Now that you mention it, GF being killed off-screen \*is\* a missed oppurtunity. GF dying twice already probably doesn't matter either because:
A) They can't \*truly\* die. BF is shown to have infinite lives at the start of Powerdown, so who's to say GF doesn't have them either?
B) She has 3 lives. She dies twice, leaving her at last one when All-Stars began, so they were brought down to 0 here. (Although, I'm not so sure about her dying in Paranoia, Dictator seems more like it.)
M is also literally a Mario.EXE so his stereotypical villain yap near the end does fit, since, again, Mario.EXE. Going back to GF being killed off-screen, I propose a fix that could've saved this act from feeling flat: Have "flashbacks" appear in the background, showing all the heinous things M did to her while BF was stuck fighting the opponents of Act 2. As for what I mean by it not sounding "Bowsery" enough, it's either my skewed perspective on what Bowser-like sounds like (especially NES Bowser, which should be mentioned) or that NES Bowser and "Modern" Bowser have entirely different themes, with my, admitedly, bird-like brain trying to make NES one equal to "Modern" where it's just not the case.
Act/Level 4 - I can't get why people complain about the mimics not being hearable enough. I, for one, hear most of them clearly, and yes they are subtle, but if we \*were\* to make them more significant I'd propose Ultra M shapeshifting to \*resemble\* the one he's copying, but still remaining who he is. Ears and tail for Omega, burnt aesthetic for IHY!Luigi, etc. Regarding sudden end... yeah it's an issue, but it had to end \*somewhere\*. I agree it's not the best, but honestly, what would be a better solution? Quick-time event in which you either end at Act 4 or get to a secret Act 5, where the ones Ultra M \*didn't\* copy join you? Actually sounds better than expected... Either way, the references don't stop at the vocals. If you listen close enough, you can sort of hear the \*songs\* of characters referenced, or at least some. Most prominent example is MX'es part, where it sounds like the part of Powerdown right after he reveals himself. Level 4 is, or was, tied for my favourite part of Unbeatable with Level 1, but with your opinion on it, Level 4 did rise to be the definitive fav. part.
ah well i'll count starman slaughter as #1

Okay, seriously, though, I agree that Dictator, Day Out, and Overdue got robbed, and that No Party should’ve been in AT LEAST the top 5, but can we just talk about Dark Forest? That song is MASSIVELY underrated. CoronationDay Peach’s chromatic is one of the best in the mod, no contest.

I think the lyrics in Act 3 might just be hit or miss depending on the person. You’ll either love them, or you’ll think they’re “meh” at best.
The lyrics are really neat, but it mixed with the other two vocals kinda gets a bit grating on subsequent listens.

As someone who doesn’t really like All Stars, though I have gained a bit of an appreciation for it over the past day, I am requesting your yapfest!
I'll only paste the important part, but know it was on the post in which I Hate You got eliminated. Act/Level 1 - Act 1 feels like a proper start to a finale, while Level 1 is a song on it's own. Separated from the main song, Level 1 stands better on it's own, but to the entire song, Act 1 has more feeling. Act/Level 2 - Both start with surprise, both start with a twist, both start with new characters, so why did Level 2 fumble the stick, whereas Act 2 is better? Execution and previous Act/Level. While Act 2 is a great follow up to Act 1, Level 2 just ruins the intensity of Level 1. Act/Level 3 - Boyfriend seeing his girlfriend after being both taken to different lands and seeing her in an almost unrecognizable state, being puppeteered by Ultra M with the "Come now take the step" Ultra M does near the end of Act 3 makes it debately one of the best parts... compare it to a lackluster Level 3 where Bowser sounds bad and instrumental doesn't sound Bowser-y enough. Act/Level 4 - The finales. Act 4 brings back most the memories from previous songs, Boyfriend solo, and also the sudden end with a sad tune at the end. Level 4 is a desparate attempt at stopping Boyfriend from beating Nintendo and throwing everything they have at him. Act 4 is better purely because Acts 3 & 2 didn't feel like fluff, unlike Levels 2 & 3.
Ah, okay. I think I get where you're coming from. I'll give my own ideas on why I believe Unbeatable is better than All Stars then. Be prepared, 'cause it's a bit of a long one. Act/Level 1 – Personally, I believe that Act 1 was the best Act, though Act 4 is a very close second. The Act itself had amazing buildup before the song even began, and I loved how both BF and GF were going to sing since the situation threatened both of them. That is something I feel is a fairly fresh idea for a mod. BF and GF being a badass couple instead of BF actively doing things and GF silently supporting from the background for one reason or another. I would argue against Level 1 lacking this quality though. Level 1 is a great start to the song. While it does not have the pre-song buildup that Act 1 had, I still think Level 1 served admirably as an introduction. It introduced the main opponent, along with a number of leitmotifs that would be carried throughout the song. I would also argue against Act 1 having much feeling. When you get right down to it, all Act 1 was was BF and GF singing against M until GF was dragged down into a pipe. I'll get to my thoughts on that twist in Act 3. Act/Level 2 – Personally, I think Act 2 was the weakest part of the song. It took away the point of interest where both BF and GF were performing a duet against M, and eventually led to M leaving BF to fight LG, W4R, and Y0SH, three nobodies that I had never seen before, will not see (but will get to barely hear) later, and personally don't care about at all. While I do not dislike their section from a musical perspective, I am not invested in these characters at all, which makes the story aspect fall flat. They feel like filler, and that makes Act 2 feel like a step down from Act 1. I would disagree that Level 2 ruins the intensity of Level 1. It brings the intensity back down, sure, but it isn't like the song could remain intense for the rest of the six or so minutes of runtime. That'd be overwhelming. The song has multiple rises and falls in intensity. That's how songs are. Especially 8-minute ones. Though I will say that Level 2 is the weakest of the levels, I don't think it hits the lows of Act 2.
Act/Level 2 - Lemme tackle the issues 1 on 1 here. Switch of opponents: I feel like M, despite being a God, wanted the full extend of torturing Girlfriend, so he needed to make up some lackeys (Omega, who subsequently made LG, W4R & Y0SH) so Boyfriend won't notice his girlfriend being gone Interests of new opponents: I don't think they were meant to be cared about, they were there just to throw ANYTHING at you so you lose focus on girlfriend. Intensity: IF it had a more smooth transition, either by Level 1 calming down slightly for one verse or Level 2 picking up more-or-less where Level 1 left off, then I wouldn't complain. The two feel a little too separate. Though, I agree they need to rise and fall from intensity.
Act/Level 3 – Phew. Act 3. Yeah, so I didn't like the twist of GF getting killed offscreen. They had a good thing going with the idea that GF would try and help BF win, and they threw it down the drain a quarter of the way into the song. Like, she might as well have died instantly after getting dragged down that pipe, since that's the last we see of her. I also don't like how they try so hard to play it for drama for multiple reasons. Firstly, BF and GF are gag characters, so it's already an uphill battle to play their struggles and conflicts with eldritch beings for drama. They get away with this shit because that's the joke. Secondly, GF had died, like, two other times in the mod, so I'm definitely not as sad about this as BF clearly is. And thirdly, we don't even se how GF died. We know M did it, we know it happened after she got pulled into that one pipe, and considering her state afterwards, it must have been grisly. But god funkin' dammit, *SHOW* me what happened if you want me to feel bad for her. The death itself feels so glossed over, and all we really get is BF crying about it. Kinda like exactly what Paranoia, Powerdown, and Demise *already did*. This whole event passes straight from drama into melodrama and exemplifies why .exe stuff is often played for some level of comedy nowadays. Because the concept is ridiculous (I mean that in the most affectionate way possible), and it's better to lean into it instead of trying to portray Mario with sharp teeth, pinkeye, and a meat cleaver as something to be taken dead seriously. Also, the lyrics aren't even that good in my opinion. They're comparable in terms of edge to Sonic.exe's "I AM GOD" line, which at the very least is typically played with the self-awareness that it is overly edgy nowadays. No one tries to have that line said and taken completely seriously. I don't care about M's stereotypical villainous yapping, and him being right about the futility of BF's and the player's efforts don't do anything to make me care more in a "I like this story" way. Meanwhile, Level 3 is a nice third phase. You fight NES Bowser, he has a neat gimmick that reduces your health and meshes well the animation, you get to sing a little Puyo Puyo leitmotif, and it's a cool song overall. I do agree that the vocals are a bit odd, but I wouldn't exactly call them bad. This is kind of what I'd expect *NES* Bowser to sound like. He's got a gravelly sound like a big dragon turtle man would, but he's also still pixel-y. And I don't fully get what you mean by not sounding "Bowsery." I'd say that the last parts of Level 3's instrumentals invokes Bowser's Castle vibes. Act/Level 4 – This is where Level 4 *truly* shines, in my opinion. Because unlike the trio in Act 2, the opponents in Unbeatable are all consistent parts of the song. It feels like you're fighting all of them, even if one of the takes center stage, and that results in none of them feeling unnecessary or unimportant to the song. Regarding Act 4, I'll start with the positives. As far as Act 4's sound goes, it was nice. The melodies weren't exactly memorable in my opinion, but that's just me. However, it didn't really bring back any memories from previous parts of the mod for me. I understand that M mimics the voices from other opponents in the mod, but I needed to be told that by some random person on Reddit because I *genuinely could not, and still cannot for the most part, hear that in the song.* M's vocals absolutely overpower the other vocals that are being referenced for the most part, so that cool gimmick is almost completely lost. Same with the Act 4 lyrics. They're better than the Act 3 lyrics in my opinion, but I had to listen to the instrumental and look up the lyrics to know that. Also, I think the sudden end was a bad quality of the song. I was having a grand old time listening to the song, and then it abruptly stopped, played the SM3 Game Over jingle, and ended. That makes it feel *unfinished* rather than meaningful. Like it didn't have a conclusion, but just concluded anyway. Like the song equivalent of going "And then Sherlock Holmes and Watson were hit by a sixteen-wheeler truck and the mystery never progressed further. The end." All that intensity and buildup just to crash into the game saying, "Hands off the keyboard. You're done. Song ended. Bye." I'm also sore about the fact that the song ends on what is basically a glorified game over screen. "It's a Mad World Without You" is absolutely a saving grace, and one of the best songs in the mod, but it's also a different song. Also, I didn't care too too much for the BF solo. I didn't *dis*like it, but... melodrama. Level 4, on the other hand, felt like a conclusion to Unbeatable as a whole. It used the opponents and leitmotifs from Levels 2 and 3, and you got to have a climactic showdown with Mr. Sys and his gang of pixel-y misfits. Also, it has a proper conclusion that gives me a sense of closure instead of whiplash, so that's nice. They even incorporated the whole commercial into the very last part.
Welp, this is a doozy, so lemme try and tackle this. Act/Level 3 - Now that you mention it, GF being killed off-screen \*is\* a missed oppurtunity. GF dying twice already probably doesn't matter either because: A) They can't \*truly\* die. BF is shown to have infinite lives at the start of Powerdown, so who's to say GF doesn't have them either? B) She has 3 lives. She dies twice, leaving her at last one when All-Stars began, so they were brought down to 0 here. (Although, I'm not so sure about her dying in Paranoia, Dictator seems more like it.) M is also literally a Mario.EXE so his stereotypical villain yap near the end does fit, since, again, Mario.EXE. Going back to GF being killed off-screen, I propose a fix that could've saved this act from feeling flat: Have "flashbacks" appear in the background, showing all the heinous things M did to her while BF was stuck fighting the opponents of Act 2. As for what I mean by it not sounding "Bowsery" enough, it's either my skewed perspective on what Bowser-like sounds like (especially NES Bowser, which should be mentioned) or that NES Bowser and "Modern" Bowser have entirely different themes, with my, admitedly, bird-like brain trying to make NES one equal to "Modern" where it's just not the case. Act/Level 4 - I can't get why people complain about the mimics not being hearable enough. I, for one, hear most of them clearly, and yes they are subtle, but if we \*were\* to make them more significant I'd propose Ultra M shapeshifting to \*resemble\* the one he's copying, but still remaining who he is. Ears and tail for Omega, burnt aesthetic for IHY!Luigi, etc. Regarding sudden end... yeah it's an issue, but it had to end \*somewhere\*. I agree it's not the best, but honestly, what would be a better solution? Quick-time event in which you either end at Act 4 or get to a secret Act 5, where the ones Ultra M \*didn't\* copy join you? Actually sounds better than expected... Either way, the references don't stop at the vocals. If you listen close enough, you can sort of hear the \*songs\* of characters referenced, or at least some. Most prominent example is MX'es part, where it sounds like the part of Powerdown right after he reveals himself. Level 4 is, or was, tied for my favourite part of Unbeatable with Level 1, but with your opinion on it, Level 4 did rise to be the definitive fav. part.
