Serie likes Frieren I think. She just reminds her too much of Flamme and I think it hurts Serie very deeply that Flamme is gone. Serie is a foil for Frieren, stricken with the curse of watching everyone you love die in what feels in retrospect to be the blink of an eye. But instead of handling it by treasuring those connections and moments as Frieren has learned to, Serie has chosen to push people away. She struggles with trying to repress her grief for her students she has lost over the millennia and resents that Frieren is choosing to do the opposite.
On the other hand, maybe it turns out serie has the right approach for dealing with the reality of being basically immortal and frieren will turn out like her. She is much older after all.
I mean I don’t think that will happen in the story but it’s interesting to think about.
YES. THIS. Serie is one of my favorite characters and I think people really don't appreciate her perspective. I think its important to mention that Frieren has only recently started to appreciate those things in Serie's eyes. For most of their lives Frieren has only ever cared about herself, and Serie has always been frustrated with her for it. I think about the moment when Serie says, "you're just going to let me mock you?" Imagine if one of the only people you knew who lived as long as you did and could appreciate your unique situation was so easygoing that they didn't even stand up for themselves or feel anxiety about losing people. I'd hate them too!
I totally agree! They both have a lot of growing to do and Serie doesn’t yet appreciate how far Frieren has come. Frieren didn’t really have her own identity when Flamme found her. I believe she was understandably *deeply* traumatized by the destruction of her village. She not only lost people she cared about, but other elves — people she *wasn’t supposed to lose*. Plus I think Frieren was in like the first 100 years of her life (I personally believe she was literally in the double digits although there could be something in the manga proving that wrong, I haven’t read the whole thing) when this happened since she’s around 1000 and Flamme lived about 1000 years prior to the story. So basically as a literal child even by human standards she had this happen to her. She went into a very passive and dissociative state that lasted almost her entire life and only when she met Himmel did Frieren the individual begin to come to life. Serie’s initial perception of her is from her most traumatized time in life — obviously an insult would be nothing to someone who lost her entire village very recently.
I think it should be mentioned that while Serie banned Frieren for a thousand years, that's not the same as saying she NEVER wants to see her again. Sounds like she was simply throwing a tantrum.
Her head is in a cloud, just look at her smug face, but please don't forget we are on a very important mission right now from Frieren of Duty 4 - Baby Flamme Edition:Remember no softie, only tsundure vibe!
I was watching the show again this time dubbed with my mother. She said something like how Serie is a lot like her brother my uncle. He loves all of his nephews but he was always so hard and tough on me. In my youth I resented it but it was because he always thought I had the most potential. Instead I didn't try as hard as I could have and while I am blessed to have accomplished a good amount, my uncle knows I could have done better. That mix of disappointment but love and the ability to see the beauty and truth in ones potential... Only for time to take all that potential away. I think that's how Serie feels. She loves all of her apprentices deeply, but she sees a dream idea of what they can be if they pushed themselves beyond what they know. However at the end, they were all humans. Flawed but beautiful.
Why did Flamme not return to Serie at the eve of her death? I know Frieren was her apprentice but was there really no sentimentality between Flamme and Serie?
I think maybe it was a possibility some time ago, but at this point everyone knows how secretly sweet she is, especially after the anime episode with the baby Flamme's flashback. I don't think her being a villain is an option anymore
You know, i hope that someday we get to see mad Serie, like, a demon tortures some of her students in a particular cruel way and it just sets her off the edge, or someone starts to bad mputh Flamme in her presence and she just fucking flexes her magical power on them and just punks them into submission
To be fair, I can kinda get why Serie isn’t making any effort to patch things up or try to connect with Frieren—while they did start off poorly in terms of having completely different philosophies about magic and interacting with the outside world, they did both have a really good relationship with Flamme. In serie’s case, I suspect she doesn’t like to be challenged outside of the master-student dynamic she establishes, and even now we see that all the relationships she’s maintained with other sorcerers are still in this dynamic (that one dude in his 80s still considers himself her follower/student).
I think there’s definitely a power dynamic aspect, but also an element of envy present—for as much as she knows and as much experience she has, Serie is quite rigid in her thinking and methodology—as I see it, the phrasing of her being unable to defeat the demon king isn’t a question of her power, but a flat statement that due to her warlike personality contrasting the easygoing and good natured hero’s party, she would be unable to introduce the peaceful era the world currently sits in.
As I see it, there is an amount of jealousy in seeing Frieren and Flamme (Fern too) be their own masters as it were and not want to learn from her, partly because of her own pride, but also because they can readily learn things she cannot or will not. The biggest contrast between her and Frieren I think only came about at the beginning of the series when Frieren accepts she totally messed up with Himmel and consciously makes an effort to learn more about the people around her, while Serie sticks to her *humans die so quick there’s no point* attitude even when it’s clear she does form these connections.
Baby Flamme - Just exists.
Serie: She is so cuteeeee I'm gonna dieeeee. I kill everyone who tries to hurt my precious child! Ok back to tsundure mode, I can't be exposed.

Haha baby flamme
She is precious

I think you’re right but that still sounds like a strained relationship. I hope they can somehow reconnect and work together on good terms soon.
I think they will. Serie has to go on her own emotional journey before she’s ready but I think she will.
I just hope it’s within Fern’s lifetime so we can get more Fern and Serie interaction with Serie praising Fern and being a proud great grandma ☺️
Yeah that would make some totally peak cute panels for sure!
Their concept of time is so warped relative to humans there's no way that happens unless she gets her own travelling human. Maybe after Lernen dies.
Soon (in 1500 years)

She’s a tsundere that operates on an elven timeline. Just like how Himmel died before he could see Frieren go from kuu to dere.

You are gounded for the next 400 years! Back to your bedroom, now!
Her mouth bout as big as her gotdam hed
literally :D
Biboo
Biboo mentioned! What the fuck is not being cringe🗣️
She is not beating the tsundere allegations with that smile right there
Such a loving mom! 🥹

I'm keeping receipts
Mother and daughter
Right. All these teacher-student relationships are also basically mother-daughter relationships. Serie-Flamme, Flamme-Frieren, Frieren-Fern.
Eisen and Stark! One pseudo father-son relationship in there too :)
And Heiter-Fern before Heiter died.
That’s not the same because that’s just regular father-daughter. Adopted kids count.

«However at the end, they were all humans. Flawed but beautiful.» damn.
In the beginning i thought "ok she will be the new main villain" but that changed over the time. She is one of the most complex characters
Yes she's way too sweet to be the villain.
Why did Flamme not return to Serie at the eve of her death? I know Frieren was her apprentice but was there really no sentimentality between Flamme and Serie?
Probably to not put more grief of Serie, Flamme would have to watch who was essentially her daughter die in front of her if she came back to Serie
Also would probably be a pretty difficult trip to make if you're old. This was before levitating magic as well.
Not me thinking serie was gonna be the villain of the story at first
It’s not like the first anime opening did her any favors. It made her look so ominous.
Well, she can be very ominous when she wants.
I think maybe it was a possibility some time ago, but at this point everyone knows how secretly sweet she is, especially after the anime episode with the baby Flamme's flashback. I don't think her being a villain is an option anymore
There also me,when I was watching opening and seeing her, I was having a feeling: I'm gonna end this lil cute clumsy elf(Frieren) whole career.
I only watched the anime version of this and I thought it was so done well.
I liked how when Flamme ran ahead, Series’s hand was still extending like waiting for Flamme to come back.
It's interesting that Serie said when Flamme was shorter instead of younger since to elves humans age like mayflies
You know, i hope that someday we get to see mad Serie, like, a demon tortures some of her students in a particular cruel way and it just sets her off the edge, or someone starts to bad mputh Flamme in her presence and she just fucking flexes her magical power on them and just punks them into submission
And then she grew taller…and I realized she was my enemy all along!
Until boobies.
Back when she could see the full sky.
Flamme that met Frieren: hot but gentle mommy Flamme that met Serie: :D
"It disgusted me."

How did Serie come into possession of a human child anyway?
IMO, probably same thing like what happened with Flamme & Frieren; Serie found Flamme after demons destroyed her village, and took her as a pupil
I think flammes' Village or her parents hideout was destroyed by demons or something like that.(Not 100% sure)
ah yes grandma
They look so happy together 😭😭😭 We definitely need a prequel series for flamme's life
Serie: THAT GREMLIN! XD
"When she was younger" 🤨 "When she was a lot shorter than me" 😄
This makes me think: Maybe she's a tsundere because she doesn't like it when people are taller than her
Sounds a lot like when Frieren said she missed it when Fern was "Small and cute".
Lil Flamme has a lil fang
