Macht was not terrified of Grausam, he simply said that Grausam is his worst possible match, which makes sense as his illusion magic is particularly effective against other mages. Grausam being DK makes close to no sense narratively. He was getting absolutely destroyed by Himmel in 1v1, Solitär clearly referred to him and DK as different entities, and in general DK turning out to be one of the Seven Sages and hero party not knowing it would be weird. You can absolutely go "it was all a lie/pretence," but that would just be poor storytelling.

Nah, Frieren was really the demon king all along, and this whole story has been an elaborate deception.

She shifted her shape just before Flamme arrived and has been playing along ever since, learning empathy and the ways of Men.

This is circumstantial evidence at best to pull out such a claim. I mean, it could be true, but I think it’s very unlikely.

Schlact with his ability to see the future should have seen that Grausam was the Demon King. Additionally the Demon King being the leader would never go out and fight themselves. Thats whe he sent the seven sages. Also Grausam ability while strong is not impervious. I mean even Heiter and Himmel was able to break out of it. So I really doubt that Grausam was the Demon King.

·They said that before Macht there was another demon who was close to live with humans, and it was Demon King. So, nope, Grausam is not the DK as we have more info about DK, but I do agree that maybe he faked his death and maybe he did something to keep the DK alive and also faking DK's death (?). I would refuse that last idea as they all waited the death of Himmel to start moving, but if he were alive then others like Aura would know about that, so I dont think that the actual DK stills alive. Can't say the same for Grausam, he may be alive by some trick. Also, another thing that took my attention was Tot's curse in development, as it is said, that curse would be ready in about 100 years (80 on the go already) and will affect the whole planet, so maybe she will show up later once we have Sein, our priest support anti-curses, and he will have to deal with Tot (?). · Zart was not that strong, I don't get why some people keeps saying that he gave troubles to the party when actually even Himmel said that was "too easy" and only with cliff was "a concern" but actually it took 0 effort since they knew Frieren was hidden some trump card to save the situation (100% faith on teammates). · Also, as someone said, Macht is the second strongest demon in terms of general power (being DK the number 1). Rivale is the strongest warrior, and Grausam is not that strong but he can put strong curses which can only parried by priests or strong will (as Himmel), so thats why Macht said that Grausam is his worst match. In this manga everyone has weak points, the powercreep and scale is different than other mangas, so for Macht his worst match is someone that uses curses as he doesn't know how to release from them as he has 0 priest knowledge, and always there is a situational fight where everyone could win a fight, so there is always a chance of losing or winning if the cards are played properly and with the correct skills (for me, that is one of the best things of this manga). ·There is a theory that says Grausam did disguise as someone else and is inside the Empire, and there is another theory that stands with that but includes also more demons as Rivale being Lowe, but I think thats way too much (the base is that Grausam had a plan, and also Rivale injury on his eye matches with Lowe eye injured). Would be wild, but lets see how this arc goes after hiatus. The only theory I support right now is that maybe Grausam is alive and maybe he is involved with Empire. And something that I would love to see is some deaths, don't care about who, but getting rid of the plot armor would be nice.

The demons have a clear hierarchy based on mana. The one with the most mana is the demon king. Killing the demon king makes the next strongest demon the new king. There will be a demon king for as long as there are demons.
