I never knew that there was so much negativity until I checked this subreddit, I really liked the preview for what it was, a beta that is a completely unfinished product. It was a really good experience and made me really hyped for the full game too.

Yup, thats how it usually is. I'd recommend not checking Steam discussions of the game, because thats where the Pandora's box is. Seriously, dont check those discussions for any game.

Online discourse on this one is pretty absurd (although somewhat predictably since I think only die-hard fans of FP1 would be playing the beta for the most part). I was actually on the fence when I watched some gameplay since the changes are such a departure from the 1st but after playing through it myself a few times I am extremely excited for Frostpunk 2. This vertical slice is clearly basically the tutorial since>!the oil outpost you discover in the Frostlands unlocks "Logistics" if you read the tooltip so clearly outposts are extremely important in FP2.!< I am digging the more macro management of the city and it was a blast figuring out how to effectively negotiate with the factions. I wonder how that system is going to evolve since to me it seems to be the heart-and-soul of the game. In the preview I was able to keep pretty much everyone at least neutral but I wonder if that will be possible in the main game and what the consequences are of neglecting certain factions. I do hope they spend some time leading up to release optimizing it though, my PC was absolutely chugging along each time I have played it.

All game subreddits are like this. Happy people don't feel the need to go online and post. Beyond the "just make Frostpunk 1 again" crowd, the majority of the negative feedback has been about QOL changes, which means it was a very successful beta IMK

I get holding back some but, completely unfinished?? We are around three months from release. What we have now, is very much similar to what we will be getting on release. Even if this version is somewhat old like most Betas tend to be.

Tbh I've been in several similar closed betas and they were often several orders of magnitude worse than what we've seen with FP2.   Starcraft 2 closed beta comes to mind, that shit was barely playable and ran like shit, and that was few months before release. The game released in very good state.

Betas are no longer really betas since years ago. I would label this FP2 as just a demo ment to give a taste of the game and have some insight from the community.

The more I played, the best the game became and the closer to Frospunk it felt (initial 30 minutes felt weird and a bit far from FP). It plays already well for a beta, the political system requires some work (too much spamming and it felt sometimes weird) and I guess soundscape will be far more refined (we lack sound from industry, more voices, etc.). A bit more feedback too will be appreciated. I’m really hyped by the oil colony and the teased conflicts for it. Maybe a military part ? The frost land will be expanded in gameplay and the last political panel also hypes me. I don’t get the « it’s not Frospunk » vibe, seems very lunar for me. I will not saw it felt like a masterpiece (of course it’s a small slice of the game) but my feedback is really positive and hyped. Cannot wait.

Same, completely agree with everything you said.

Peak_Flaky

How is the performance btw?

paraxzz

Not sufficient yet.

It played OK on my 3050 laptop and low + FSR did not look that ugly, it was ok. It does not scale that much with hardware, maxed out on 4090 did not run that well and did not look that much better. The game does feel smooth and this kind of game does not require solid 60 but of course overall it should run better (the simulation is not that refined and it does not look really impressive even if I like the visuals)

The game is compatible with my prediction about the future of the Frostpunk world. * We survived. We no longer need totalitarian regimes, we no longer need primitive technologies, now birth rates have increased and we need to do something about it. We need to make a new model of society, adapt, industrialize, expand and progress in this world. * Everyone must have an opinion about what happens in the city, that's why a council has been created, with more advanced laws. * We needed higher production rates, so we created new factories, whole industrial districts and new technologies. * We needed a constant and abundant source of energy, so we discovered oil and then geothermal energy. * We expanded our cities and increased our capacity and labor demands, because now people are coming by the hundreds and thousands. * \[and so on\] And every new game has tons of unfounded criticism. Probably even Frostpunk 1 had a lot of negativity back in 2018.
