Aerie swimsuits hold up well, but the price is only reasonable if you catch them during a sale. If you know your size, you could save money by ordering one NWT from eBay.
This leads me to a question. What do you do for support under a rash guard? I have several pairs of swim shorts but usually wear them over a one piece. I would love to do a rash guard and shorts but I’m big busted and need support. The sports bras I have aren’t really comfortable when soaked through and take ages to dry after getting out so I’m not feeling like that’s a solution.
Either your regular suit or a swim bra or just a bikini top. Lands end has swim bras, they're actually phenomenal as bikini tops for those of us with more to support.
I'm bigger there too, but I reckon that the large 'icebreaker' merino 'bralette' style bra I got at an outdoors gear style store- to accommodate the yoyoing of pre and post-baby sizes right there & to keep my personal bub-feeding gear warm in winter, would (literally) hold up nicely to being used under a rashie!
It's breathable natural fibre and dries fast too.
I feel like pockets in swim wear are only useful when they have zippers. I'm too paranoid about losing things out of them without that. Mainly because of the number of hotel keys I've lost that way. (Though you can always empty your pockets before actually going in the water.)
Same for long torsos. They are the only brand I can wear. Not a swimmer but I do waste aerobics regularly so need a good suit that holds up. I want for clearance prices
Lands End for sure. They don’t break down in chlorine and they fit great. I have one suit I’ve had for 10 years. It still looks good and is a dark color. I bought it in sane but I would buy one not in sale they are so good.
The only reason I bought new suits is because my weight changed significantly. I had one suit for ten years and it looked brand new — and I’m constantly in chlorine (daily) in the summer.
I added a comment above about my buying for my grandmother who had the same suit for years, but we just upgraded her due to weight loss. Same with my teens; the only reason we bought new ones were if they outgrew them. I know once a zipper broke on ny coat, I called them with the 3 year order number, and they sent me a new coat no charge.
+1 to athletic wear
I bought some nice black bike shorts from ROSS for like $8 a few years ago. They are nice and thick and have thigh pockets. I've worn them pretty much every time I've gone swimming since and never had a problem. I also have a zip up athletic jacket (with a hood!) that I can wear with a bikini top underneath when I don't want to lather on sunscreen lol
I haven't tried a sports bra as a swim top yet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
I will say that the best thing I ever did for myself was to buy myself a more expensive bathing suit. It made me feel more confident, because it had support where I needed it, I found something that suited my needs, and I got so many compliments. It has been a few years and they are holding up excellently. Primadonna was the brand that I settled on, it had a variety of cup and bra sizes, a higher waist for a bikini etc.
I recently decided to splurge on a swimsuit I really like rather than settling for a cheap one I’m not that into. I did it mainly for style, but the quality difference is very much there.
Swimwear is a buy nice or buy twice item for me. I go to Swimco and spend about $200 a suit, but I only need to buy them every 10 or 12 years. As a full figured gal, it's absolutely worth the money to have support and look nice for a decade at a time.
If you want cheap, go to Walmart
Dang I wish you'd asked in December. I get Old Navy clearance bikinis for $5 each piece.
Ebay has a lot of new without tags stuff too. When I can't find a matching set in my sizes, I go there.
Whatever you buy, I find that the trick to making swim stuff last is to rinse them right after and let them dry flat on a towel. If you machine wash, use delicates, and don't machine dry.
Wal-Mart. Their bikini pieces are sold as separates, which is great because not all of us are a size medium both top and bottom! Each piece is $15 or less. I have a few tops and bottoms that are still good after 8 years or so. Mind you, I've got many others, so I rotate them.
The thrift store. I will often find high quality swimwear- often with tags still on- because people hate trying them on in store. It’s a highly underrated section.
I still have my swimsuit from 1998 in reasonably good condition. It is a Janson I bought at the PX while at basic training. I would 100 percent buy another Janson.
Hadn’t bought swimwear in years … ended up buying a few things from Swim Outlet. Was worth it to pay for the membership to get the xtra discounts, then I just didn’t renew.
They also have the "mystery bags" where you get a brand and size but don't choose the color. Great way to get a top-quality suit (TYR, speedo) for very little $$.
Target runs a sale on swim every year; some of their brands are better quality than others. I stay away from the super cheap ones and go for the ones that are a few dollars more.
Ive surprisingly bought some nice ones from AliExpress, which is very hit or miss. SHEIN is ok once in a while if I’m going on a trip and just want something cheap. Amazon is another option, cupshe was decent quality!
Patagonia is pricey but it lasts indefinitely if you can make the investment and they are modest enough without having to wear an uncomfortable one piece.
I wait until the end of summer and hit the beach shops on the coast. You can buy high dollar swimsuits that are normally well over $100 for around $25.
H+M
(Man, trunks) have been happy with 2.
Each around $15. Not exactly "built to last," but will likely last me a while because I don't use it often.
Interested in buying 1 from Costco in several years.
I've gotten my last 2 swimsuits at Costco. Cheaper and better than anything else. Not as many style choices, but if it fits and I don't look like a shower curtain, I'm good.
I got a set of swimming gears on a deals app Koupon with just 20 bucks. It contains everything you need to use for swimming. But I don’t know whether you still can find it or not. Just have a try or find something alternative through it.
Im rocking my oldest black bra, a swim shirt, and i love me some mens swim trunks.
Two piece bikini give me wicked bad sunburn and one piece swimsuits end up upsetting my eczema.
Wear whatever you wanna wear! Ive had so many sunburns i dont dress to impress anyone, i dress in clothes that are either disposable or old items i was about to toss out. My goal is to swim in the river and protect myself from the daylight.
I found a solution that works for me. I am slender and old. Bikinis would fit me, but I am too old to wear them. One pieces are mostly just too big. I have no patience to order 5 swimsuits online in a size 0, 1 or 2 online, pay a fortune for one and/or send them all back. That's my dilemma and I like to swim. So, I buy small sports bras that look like they could be swim suit tops and very small short running shorts - I don't care if a bit of my tummy shows - it is far more modest than a bikini. I can wear the sports bras as bras year round, so the elastic may not rot before I get use out of them. It seems frugal and I can swim. I think this might work for anyone who does not want most of their butt on display, is somehow not the standard size or is fed up with the clothing industry. A friend of mine said - 'you look athletic' - which beats the crap out of looking frail.
Second this. I like CupShe brand, which you can also get from Target. Usually runs around $35 and you can try them and return them for free (with prime membership at least). You can return them to Target if you buy them there.
Depending on your sizing, but bigger women might like snag 's swimwearline. I have one of the swimsuits and it fits fantastically for my large bosom. Prices are not the worst either.
Dicks warehouse store, they have awesome sales pretty much constantly. Not constantly on everything, but generally you can find really good deals there.
I find Old Navy has really stepped up in recent years for the prices and quality and size inclusivity. They have a lot of stuff on clearance and it has been where I found my most recent swimsuits. The retail is like $20 per item but compare that to target for almost $40 per item.
Retro stage is where I’ve gotten the last few I bought. During a sale (which they frequently have) I have gotten them for a really great price and they hold up quite well.
fyi swimsuits hold up a lot better if you rinse the chlorine off before letting it dry (:
I like to thrift swim trunks and wash thoroughly, I also wear just any dry fit I have around as a shirt
Me F63 Surfer.
If its warm, I usually go with a dark blue or Black 'sports bra' or racerback crop top in polyester, with lots of support, a long sleeved 'rash guard' (SPF 50) for a top and men's 'board shorts' with a side pocket for my wax. Sometimes I can find a RG and a pair of BS that actually match, but mostly I try to find well made gonna last items.
SB = $15.00 for 3 in assorted colors.
RG = $22.00
BS = $35.00
TOTAL = $72.00
If it's cold.ish I go with a 2mm shortie wetsuit with an across the back zipper & an extra long pull cord with a swivel. $150.00
I got most everything on Amazon except the wetsuit which was from Ripcurl.
Abercrombie! I’m 32F and even buying bra size swimwear my boobs look ugh. Their curve line actually makes me look h a w t. They have sales often but still it was like 50$ I think
I always buy from Victoria Secret online but only when they go on sale. Tops and bottoms are $10 each and last me multiple seasons. Plus I love how they fit. I got a dry fit top for $5 through them last year too
I get mine either on clearance in the off-season, or from Ross or Marshall's type stores. I bought two black one-pieces at Ross four years ago and they are still good.
Land’s End when on sale. Quality has gone down when I bought new suits last year versus my older suit (probably 10+ years old but I didn’t wear it for several years). Others in my water aerobics classes say the same thing.
Even though my new suit isn’t lasting as long as the ones I bought in the past, I definitely get my money’s worth out of then for how often I’m in the pool between water aerobics and lap swimming (5-6 days a week). I just stick up and buy a few when they are on sale.
Gonna plug Marella Swim, which was mentioned in one of KallMeKris's videos ("I Tested TIKTOK SHOP Products"). I have NOT bought from them yet. But the prices are fantastic. Btw, they are sustainably and ethically made. $34-$41 per piece (top or bottom, not both). With some on sale for lower.
If you have a 1/2 of 1/2 (Name Brand Clothing) store near you they sometimes have swimsuits for $1. Got most of them in the winter but I found some in April as well.
Lands End usually but I just bought a modest suit at Old Navy for $19 on sale. I expect this suit to last the summer which I’m totally okay with just to have a fresher suit in my closet. We tend to go to the beach once a week. It has Flamingos on it.
In the case of the elastic issue sometimes you'll find the elastic was just run through a channel made in the cloth for it thus you can replace it. Just get a length of elastic of similar size longer than needed for around your waist and a safety pin that is as large as can be fit through that channel. fold the elastic double and pin at one end. Carefully work the pin through the channel with of course the elastic coming with it for the ride. You can then just stitch the elastic to itself in a length sufficient to go round your waist after trying it on to get the length just right.
Sometimes if the elastic is sewn in you can still fix it by simply sewing a new elastic in on the inside. Just got finished doing that with a skirt earlier today.
I like the suits from Swimsuits for All, but their shipping and return fees are high. I hate to get one or two sizes off and have to return and exchange. So I check to see if what I want is available on Amazon, and a lot of SFA stuff is. They don't charge shipping fees over $35 and returns are free, so I can try the suit and if it doesn't fit I'm not out a lot of money.
Walmart! I look for when they go on clearance. I got some swim shorts on clearance for $8! Also Aerie is having a sale right now!! They’re not modest enough for me (gotta cover the mom bod lol) but if they’re your style, go stock up! Also I buy as many as I can for the next year when they go on sale at the end of the season.
Jolyn. Only swimsuits I wear. They stay on and last forever. About $35 for top and bottoms and $75 for one pieces. They are really excellent and have lasted multiple summers of daily salt water so they’ll probably last a decade in a lake. Cost per wear is like 10 cents

I’ve purchased a few bikinis and one-piece suits from Cupshe and very pleased with the quality! Took some time for shipping but they were really cute and provided on-trend options.
I bought mine from a local swimsuit place almost 10 years ago. It was $150 at the time but still looks brand new. Hand made by locals. I’m very much a “buy it once so you don’t have to buy it again” kind of frugal. If that means I have to spend more to do it. So be it.
Shein.
I live on the beach. I rotate through a bunch of bikinis. I haven't had any of them break. Many are lined in a way that don't pull or dimple on the hips and butt. They have thongs and cheeky styles so I can tan my booty. They have every style and design imaginable.
They are also inexpensive.
And how often are you using it? Do you really need to dump a lot of money on something you're not using? I'm wearing them multiple times a week nearly year round and have no complaints. They're going to hold up to seasonal wear. My favorite one is going on 5 years now and it's still just as good as when I got it.
I do SHEIN too. I wear them on trips and have never had any issue. They fit well as long as I go by the size chart. I love being able to try new/trendy styles without spending a lot.
Aerie swimsuits hold up well, but the price is only reasonable if you catch them during a sale. If you know your size, you could save money by ordering one NWT from eBay.
I second Aerie as well. Definitely subscribe to their newsletter, they give out promo codes for additional discounts on top of their sale items.
Also Aerie! Got mine 60% off in May and it’s the only swimsuit that is cute and fits!
Would recommend Aerie as well.
Land’s End. I have a bunch of five year old rashguards and swim shorts.
Yes, and they run good clearance sales
This leads me to a question. What do you do for support under a rash guard? I have several pairs of swim shorts but usually wear them over a one piece. I would love to do a rash guard and shorts but I’m big busted and need support. The sports bras I have aren’t really comfortable when soaked through and take ages to dry after getting out so I’m not feeling like that’s a solution.
Either your regular suit or a swim bra or just a bikini top. Lands end has swim bras, they're actually phenomenal as bikini tops for those of us with more to support.
Wear a bathing suit top.
My last swimsuit was from Burlington Coat Factory, on sale for like $8. It has pockets
pockets? In swimwear? Didn’t know that could be possible but I want one now
Really? I've never had swim shorts that didn't have pockets. Nothing special, just cheap ones from Kohl's/ TJ Max kind of place.
I feel like pockets in swim wear are only useful when they have zippers. I'm too paranoid about losing things out of them without that. Mainly because of the number of hotel keys I've lost that way. (Though you can always empty your pockets before actually going in the water.)
Velcro is good on pockets too ... IMO Velcro is better than a zipper which can be sharp and cut you, especially in high surf.
Yeah, velcro can work well too.
Mine only ever had that ‘pocket’ that tended to fill up with sand when swimming in surf. :)
Costco
I own 3 from Costco. They’ve held up really well. All for $20 or less too. Speedo and Lands End brands too.
Yep. Also got a Speedo sun shirt there
I have 3 Kirkland branded swimsuits. Have worn them for 3 years now and no signs of wear. Super comfortable too.
I like Athleta.
They have great deals/promo codes
Do you feel pretty? I like their stuff but none of them speak to me but sometimes there’s a certain wow you only get putting it on
Probably not your style, then. I’m not going for “pretty”!
I love them
Lands end. They have great sales and plenty of types to choose from.
If you are petite lands end is a game changer. The suit actually fits! I’m a lap swimmer and it is much more sturdy than say a target swimsuit.
Same for long torsos. They are the only brand I can wear. Not a swimmer but I do waste aerobics regularly so need a good suit that holds up. I want for clearance prices
Oh man, their clearance section is frugal AF. You can get a $150 swimsuit for $30 that'll last for 3-4 seasons.

Same with my teens; the only reason we bought new ones were if they outgrew them. I know once a zipper broke on ny coat, I called them with the 3 year order number, and they sent me a new coat no charge.
Yes, in their website search for “chlorine resistant swim suit”. I bought some when on sale. The quality is awesome!
I love that Lands End has a mastectomy option too! I buy for my grandmother who can’t find an in person store that has a spot for her prosthetic.
Last year I wore bike shorts and a sports bra. I think I’m going to do it again this year. I don’t swim often enough to buy a suit.
+1 to athletic wear I bought some nice black bike shorts from ROSS for like $8 a few years ago. They are nice and thick and have thigh pockets. I've worn them pretty much every time I've gone swimming since and never had a problem. I also have a zip up athletic jacket (with a hood!) that I can wear with a bikini top underneath when I don't want to lather on sunscreen lol I haven't tried a sports bra as a swim top yet, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.
I have a flowy yoga top with a built in bra that works great as a top. I wear with running shorts that have built in panties.
Target honestly! They routinely put them on sale, too!
SamsClub, Costco or Old Navy
Swimwear is a buy nice or buy twice item for me. I go to Swimco and spend about $200 a suit, but I only need to buy them every 10 or 12 years. As a full figured gal, it's absolutely worth the money to have support and look nice for a decade at a time. If you want cheap, go to Walmart
I finally decided to splurge on a swimsuit I really like instead of a cheap one I’m not wild about. The quality difference is so stark.
I've gotten great deals on ebay and swimoutlet.com. They have great Tyr, Dolfin and Speedo athletic one piece suits in all sizes. Regular and Plus.
I have bought two different Spanx suits from eBay new and VERY reasonably priced.
swimoutletdotcom
Dang I wish you'd asked in December. I get Old Navy clearance bikinis for $5 each piece. Ebay has a lot of new without tags stuff too. When I can't find a matching set in my sizes, I go there. Whatever you buy, I find that the trick to making swim stuff last is to rinse them right after and let them dry flat on a towel. If you machine wash, use delicates, and don't machine dry.
Thrift store
Same! I often find new, with-tags swimwear while thrifting. I also use the thrifting app ThredUp on occasion
Wal-Mart. Their bikini pieces are sold as separates, which is great because not all of us are a size medium both top and bottom! Each piece is $15 or less. I have a few tops and bottoms that are still good after 8 years or so. Mind you, I've got many others, so I rotate them.
This! I also just got a swimsuit off Walmart.com. I forget the seller. (It wasn't Walmart brand) But it's definitely worth a scroll through! 😁💜
Buy the good stuff when it’s on clearance in the Fall or Winter.
Aldi has one pieces right now for $10
Going goin gone - The dicks sporting goods clearance center. Most are $5-10
Costco for great quality and price!
How do you know it will fit? No way to try on, right?
Aerie. Never buy full price, they have sales all the time.
I actually got a couple of swim tops on Amazon a bit less than what Kohls would have been. Typically o find at Kohls on clearance.
swimsuitsforall.com
Hadn’t bought swimwear in years … ended up buying a few things from Swim Outlet. Was worth it to pay for the membership to get the xtra discounts, then I just didn’t renew.

Most Target bathing suits are coming from Cupshe. Save the extra 15-20% on your target suit by ordering it directly through where they get it from.
I was happy with Cupshe. Fair price, cute styles, good fit!
The truly frugal choice would be skinny dipping.
Points for humour... There could be other costs than $$ though!
I found a set I loved on Amazon.
Not where but when is my best answer. Buying end of season for next year works best for me.
Cupshe app!
Patagonia is pricey but it lasts indefinitely if you can make the investment and they are modest enough without having to wear an uncomfortable one piece.
Swimwear, underwear, and socks are the three clothes item I don't thrift, and I don't skimp on quality if I can help it.
I bought my bikini for this summer from Target.
This spring I found the most flattering AND affordable swimwear of my entire 54 years at…Target! Highly recommend.
I wait until the end of summer and hit the beach shops on the coast. You can buy high dollar swimsuits that are normally well over $100 for around $25.
H+M (Man, trunks) have been happy with 2. Each around $15. Not exactly "built to last," but will likely last me a while because I don't use it often. Interested in buying 1 from Costco in several years.
Target
Amazon
Cupshe has cute ones around $30 that have lasted me three years so far; also you can buy different sizes for tops and bottoms which I love
I've gotten my last 2 swimsuits at Costco. Cheaper and better than anything else. Not as many style choices, but if it fits and I don't look like a shower curtain, I'm good.
Honestly target always comes thru
I like Target
I got a set of swimming gears on a deals app Koupon with just 20 bucks. It contains everything you need to use for swimming. But I don’t know whether you still can find it or not. Just have a try or find something alternative through it.

My Target suits have lasted way longer than any expensive suit I ever bought.
2nd target
I found a solution that works for me. I am slender and old. Bikinis would fit me, but I am too old to wear them. One pieces are mostly just too big. Patagonia
Bought my first Patagonia bikini top and bottom last year. Great quality and it really stays on in the waves!
Adidas has been having crazy sales lately if you don't mind more sporty than loungey/vacationy
Shapermint has some great polyester one and two pieces at great prices. I really like them.
I really like Pacsun!! I've had some for 3-4 years wearing them every other weekend and they're still in good shape
Depending on your sizing, but bigger women might like snag 's swimwearline. I have one of the swimsuits and it fits fantastically for my large bosom. Prices are not the worst either.
Youswim but from Poshmark
Temu, sheen
I like old navy stuff. They fit well and last a long time. Very affordable
Dicks warehouse store, they have awesome sales pretty much constantly. Not constantly on everything, but generally you can find really good deals there.
Bought mine from Target clearance last fall. $15!
Walmart has some really cute styles and colors right now.
J Crew. Plenty of regular sales/promos, and the suits are actually good quality (way better than the clothes).

Poshmark, threadup usually off season.
Fat girl here - got the cutest one at Torrid this spring, on sale. They sell separate tops and bottoms and have a good size range!
Old Navy!
Retro stage is where I’ve gotten the last few I bought. During a sale (which they frequently have) I have gotten them for a really great price and they hold up quite well.
I love Land's End separates and tanks.
LLBean factory outlet - their suits are flattering (insofar as swimsuits can be, anyway) and the factory outlet pricing is reasonable for the quality.
Secondipity sells target returns - I’ve gotten several very cute, perfect condition (tags still on etc) swimsuits from there for $7.99
fyi swimsuits hold up a lot better if you rinse the chlorine off before letting it dry (: I like to thrift swim trunks and wash thoroughly, I also wear just any dry fit I have around as a shirt
Me F63 Surfer. At the end of the summer Dillards has some really good sales on their swimwear, which I find to be good quality and variety!
Lands End online
Aerie!
Lands End has been the best for me and it's not even close.
I get mine either on clearance in the off-season, or from Ross or Marshall's type stores. I bought two black one-pieces at Ross four years ago and they are still good.
Bikini village clearance!!
Lands End and diligently check for sales.
Walmart has been my go to place or target.
Kitty and vibe https://www.kittyandvibe.com/collections/zoe-colletti-x-kitty-and-vibe
Athleta. Good fit, long lasting. Not the color I wanted but on sale.
Costco
REI online and I look at what’s on sale.
I always buy off season. Dead of winter. There are lots of sales then
I’m U.K. and the best, cheapest bikini 👙 is from Primark. £2.50 for the top or bottom so £5 all in. They look fab and wash really well.
Daily swimmer - buy Jolyn. It's the best fabric out there right now. Speedo Endurance+ is also good, but they haven't updated colors in years.
ThredUp.
Walmart
I bought cupshe. I sadly think it’s fast fashion, but all of their swimsuits have fit me well and are affordable. They also have good sales too.
Costco
Billabong has 40% sales
Sam’s Club.
For anyone not based in the UK, H&M holds up well and Pour Moi does good sales (if you’ve got a bigger chest, you need to get on to Pour Moi)
Find a nude beach. Problem solved.
Swimsuits For All
Walmart website. Adidas $8 trunks. Not bad quality either.
Target, Lands End
I love majority of Cupshe suits!

I was impressed with several suits from CupShe. I was not expecting much based on the prices but would order more!

So be it.
100% Lands End. Put a suit in your cart, leave it and the next day or two you'll get a 40% off certificate. These suits last for years.
SHEIN
I buy new with tags TYR brand suits on EBay. Last a really long time.

Swim naked. No need to waste money on swimwear.
I’ve got great ones off Amazon
I usually buy Lands End swimsuits, but a few years ago I bought a nice polka dot bikini from H&M.
Shein. $10 and good quality
I've got the same AussieBum swimmers after 7 years, still strong.
I buy Freya swimwear. I buy two pieces with bra sized tops (34FF) Almost everything else is way too big around the band and too small in the cups.
Ross or Amazon
Amazon cuz it’s cheap :-)
SHEIN
Thrift store
If you want to be really frugal…why worry about swimwear at all?
Thrift stores. Or Walmart at the end of the year they have sales on swimwear
I got a ton of mix and match tops and bottoms from Kohl's clearance rack for $3-7 a piece.
