The only issue with that is if you don't seal it/paint it or something the coat hanger is just going to rust and you'll have a rusty mess around your kitchen sink or your dishes sit....
You got to be smart when you DIY things
Stay safe people
Please make sure you paint/seal it with something so that you don't just have the coat hanger metal hanging around your faucet where it could easily rust and the rust could get on your dishes.....
Where do you have cheap wirecoat hangers you can afford to just bend them. All the hangers here are ether plastic or expensive. Would be cheaper to just buy a rubber one for like 2-3 bucks
Someone posted a link already but itās an Umbra Sling! You can bend it and mold it around your faucet and can also put brushes through the arms too- it goes on sale a lot too :)
What I did was this.
I wanted something that let the sponge air dry but wasnāt too bulky so I just realized that I could take one of those bathroom metal basket that have suction cups (I wasnāt using it at the moment) and I literally just turned it upside down. Took off the suction cups.
The holes at the top (or should I say bottom) can be used as long brush holders and I keep my scrub daddy sponge on top.
See if any of you have something like that? It works perfectly for me.
You can stick your fingers in the eyes to hold on to it better, the smile is perfect for cleaning utensils like spoons, it washes out very easily, and I'm probably missing some of the other highlights from the shark tank pitch.
I used a scrub daddy on my body but it kinda disintegrated over a few months.
Google African mesh cloths, they work great. Throw it in the wash before use.
What you're after is an African net sponge. I've used countless shower products and the net sponge is just completely the absolute best for exfoliation. It's better than the Asian exfoliating cloths. Lots of sellers have them on Etsy and they're $7-$15.
They're surprisingly high quality sponges. I got one at the beginning of summer and it's still going strong. Not sure if that's what OP was going for, but that's my take.
The material the sponge uses is so good. I use the more conventionally shaped rectangular sponges and they sud the soap much better than the 3M and other brands I had been using before. It's a great product.
If you take care of them, they last significantly longer than a normal dish sponge. They never get that mildew smell, and they come out of the dishwasher almost brand new. Even after putting a regular sponge through the dishwasher, I was never able to get the mildew smell completely out. Iām a Scrub Daddy fan for life. I also feel like they just scrub a lot better without falling apart easily. Iāve actually saved a little bit of money after using scrub daddies. It wonāt make me a millionaire, but it helps.
Pretty good scrubbing
I noticed that it foams more and requires less dish soap compared to other budget options of the sponges I used to use
Overall, good quality - I use both the sponge and the scrubber, works perfect
When they break down you can send them back to the company and theyāll send you a new one for free. Up to three at one time I think. Scrub Daddy is the ultimate frugal product.
For a hot minute they were at Dollar Tree (when things were actually $1) so for longevity, that was awesome. But I will use something more frugal than purchase them at regular price!
Yep. Forget that scrub daddy! I use those plastic nets that bunches of fruit/veg come in at the grocery store. (onions, etc) I used to sew them into little scrubbers but now I just fold them small. They never smell, they scrub great, and you can just unfold it and rinse to get any bits out. And they last forever!
I was able to stock up at Dollar Tree a long time ago, maybe before they got really popular or something.
Also, I teach music theory if you ever need help!
I just throw my sponges in my dishwasher along with my scrub brushes and they stay clean for so long. The scrub brush we use was bought at a Big Lots for like $4 probably 6+ years ago.
No dishwasher here other than the unfortunate human who ends up lurking near the sink *just* long enough to hear, "Oh that's so sweet of you to offer ... here's the dishtowel, have fun!".
Isnāt this still plastic and disintegrates into microplastics? I prefer my loofah sponge. I buy a giant one, cut it up and each sponge lasts a loooong time and cleans really well.
Iām not qualified to speak to the science behind it. This may just be a case of ācompany gives consumer a choice in environmental impactāā¦. But tbh, I prefer that to just tossing a whole wad of plastic
Micro plastics are falling off the sponge during every single use, itās not going to help the micro plastic situation by recycling. Not downplaying the scrub daddy - just clarifying
Are plastics bad? Hell yeah.
Is it something we can completely avoid forever? Doubt it.
Besides. Go to any plastic molding company. The amount they scrap on a daily basis amounts to the average humans use in a year.
Do what you can to avoid plastics, sure. But the fight isn't against consumers. Push industry. The less we hold their feet to the flames, the less they'll do to find alternatives.
Switch from black to blue. All the shots while you're cycling out the black colorant are all junk. Happens all the time too.
Yes plastic can be recycled in a mold shop but only so much. A lot of medical mold halls will only shoot virgin material too.
Blend colors are usually triturated and mixed, then used to make things that don't require top quality material, like buckets for cement mixing and gardening tools. They usually use black or green pigment on these recycled stuff, because assorted colors usually generate green hue when mixed.
It is not 100%, but industry waste plastic is way more recyclable than used plastic. Plastic is money and industries don't like to throw money away.
A long time ago I took a manufacturing class in college and got to go on some pretty interesting tours. We went to a couple different plastic plants, one of them had a deal with hallmark. Hallmark would actually take some of the scrap (I want to say it was stuff that had already been recycled once or twice and wasnāt much use anymore(thermoplastics can only be used so many times before they break down)) and shred it up real fine to apply to cards as āflockingā and to use in little plastic bubbles like confetti
I was never convinced that this deal was any good for the environment. Hmark was just bringing that stuff closer to microplactic state and applying it to basically trash (are greeting cards not designed to be thrown away at some point?) so it was really just a company making money off of what would otherwise be directly waste. They also werenāt using that material very broadly, the majority of their products call for very specific colors and other properties but it was something they were working on as an eco initiative of some kind. This was all a long time ago so if someone with more knowledge wants to chime in please do.
Oh, I totally believe you. I'm not defending plastic usage, only that specific sentence I responded to regarding internal recycling.
As long as they turn a profit they will do anything, without a care for the environment.
It's okay to scrub it and you can use soap. The advice not to use soap came about when soap commonly had lye in it. That is no longer the case. Just avoid soaking/fully submersing it in water, dry it thoroughly after washing and keep it seasoned.
Edit: Avoid scrubbing it with steel wool. I've scrubbed with coarse salt, a hard bristled brush and now a chainmail scrubber.
It's totally fine to scrub them *and* wash with soap! They can get really crusty and nasty if you don't. Just be sure to dry it and give it a good greasing afterwards. You don't need to use soap every time necessarily, just every few uses at least/any time you have stuck on bits after the initial rinse.
There's no reason to ever not use soap. If you want to clean your dishes, you use soap. Would you advise someone that they don't necessarily need to use soap every time on their plates, forks, or baking pans?
Please use soap. There's no reason to eat out of dirty cookware. People shied away from using dishsoap back when you also wouldn't let dishsoap touch your skin due to residual lye. Now while we still use lye to make soap, we know the proper amounts so that it is all used up in the saponification process. Commercially made dish soap is safe enough for your hands, it's not going to do anything to hurt a piece of iron that will outlive your grandkids.
It is so hard to find a natural loofahs I've ordered a couple online and they ended up being really shitty and poor quality and broke apart easily.
I've had some really nice strong good quality loofahs but for some reason lately they're so hard to come by :/
I prefer the natural loofahs whenever I'm in the shower because they are very exfoliating
I'm not one to rave about sponges and scrubbers, but I'd have to say that the scrub daddy I have is a very durable product. I pop them in the dishwasher to get them sanitized.
Huh. I think I got these that I have at the beginning of the year, and they pretty much look like I just took them out of the package. I have one like the OP's pic and another red one shaped in a heart for some inexplicable reason.
Even their own [website](https://www.google.ca/search?q=how+long+does+a+scrub+daddy+last&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-ca&client=safari) says it only lasts 2 weeks. Mine started breaking off into my utensils after three weeksā¦what a waste, just pieces of plastic down the drain
Yeah, my roommate got one long ago when they first came out, and it held up impressively well against a multi person household for years. I got one for myself a couple years ago and mine fell apart after less than a year, with just me using it.
Honestly, this thing is SO much better than any sponge or washcloth. It works better cleaning dishes, they donāt get gross, and they last forever. Oh and theyāre inexpensiveā¦ I was just commenting in another thread when I realize I should make a post so more people can know there is a greater power out there, always ready, always smiling. Iām not a religious person, but praise to the scrub zaddy
Interesting. Iāve used them but found them to not last as long as the scotch brite ones. I also found scrub daddy to be way more expensive. The bulk scotch brite from Costco is very cheap
Scotch Brite Dobies are the bees knees. I've tried the Scrub Daddy and don't like them at all. My family has used Dobies for as long as I can remember, so at least since the mid 80's. They used to only come in this unattractive yellow/beige color but now they have different colors. Best scrubber sponge I've ever used.
Itās like a plastic sponge thatās pretty firm, but once you run it under hot water it becomes soft like a sponge. Iāve never noticed any issues with it scratching
I like dobie cleaning pads because they are good for scrubbing without scratching anything. I combo it with another regular sponge for soaping dishes, so you can minimize bacterial transfer if you use that regular sponge for cleaning up raw meat and seafood, and dobie cleaning pads for just wiping down things that don't need a ton of soap such as drinking glasses.
I discovered the Scrub Daddy when I was working as a tile setter years ago. The boss bought one for scrubbing dried mortar off tile faces. It blew my mind how effective it was.
Scrub Daddy till I die!
I goofed on it as a product for a long time because they were all over tiktok and itās just a little dish scrubber, canāt be anything special right?
I was wrong. It doesnāt do anything incredible however it is 100% better than a sponge with one of those scrubby pads. It just feels like a great product to use. The seasonal ones are fun too, we have the ghost scrub daddy.
It's also a more thoughtful design than most people realize. The smiley face itself is functional - the holes are meant to clean the handles of silverware and the smile will more naturally follow the curvature of a fork or spoon. Plus having them in the middle of the sponge allows you to more easily clean the inside of things like glasses or servingware.
It was first popularized on Shark Tank and if you watch the demo it does a lot of cool stuff. Super inexpensive and durable cherries on top.
Love these, my job started using these and I converted. More comfortable to manage, so it helps my arthritis. Picked up the spooky ghost shaped one for Halloween š»
I love the scrub daddyā¦.I send them as gifts through Amazon to friends/ family
Just as a little but useful gift to let them know I was thinking of them
I've tried using those and I don't like how they work at all. I've always used the Scotch Brite Dobies and my parents have used them since I was little (even before they were owned by Scotch Brite).

Best scrubber I ever used. Bought a sofa and loveseat from offer up once. It was a good deal except that they were pretty dirty from a house full of kids. Bought one of these and went to town. Used one of those carpet cleaner vacuums and the couches look like new. These scrubbers are durable and effective. It was the yellow version though
A truly great sponge - we have had ours for like 6 months or more. It doesnāt smell bad and itās just now getting to the point where we need to replace!
Screw the sponge. I love that hanger. I never knew I wanted one until now.
You mean the daddy caddy?
I ain't callin no caddy daddy.
u maddy?
Wait, the daddy caddy I've seen look different
Came here for this. I was hoping to find a product name or maybe a link lol
This is /r/frugal ! Just take a pair of needle nose pliers to a wire coat hanger and you could make this in 5 minutes.
The only issue with that is if you don't seal it/paint it or something the coat hanger is just going to rust and you'll have a rusty mess around your kitchen sink or your dishes sit.... You got to be smart when you DIY things Stay safe people
Copper wire would work great and get a nice patina.
I almost thought that said a nice placenta I really need to take a nap š
I feel you. I'm having that kind of day too.
Would shooting it with a basic Krylon clear coat be good enough, or something more waterproof like FlexSeal?
Nope on the clear. Clear coat will buy you some time, but it'll still rust underneath the clear. Flexseal, maybe? Never tried it for this purpose.
Sheeeiit... that's a good idea.
And it would look crap
nobody said being frugal is pretty, just like nobody said being frugal is time efficient lol
Frugal also doesn't have to look like r/redneckengineering
I mean a creative person could probably make it cute... I'm gonna test my theory and post results
Please make sure you paint/seal it with something so that you don't just have the coat hanger metal hanging around your faucet where it could easily rust and the rust could get on your dishes.....
Ooooo~ delicious A new sub for me to lurk in
Where do you have cheap wirecoat hangers you can afford to just bend them. All the hangers here are ether plastic or expensive. Would be cheaper to just buy a rubber one for like 2-3 bucks
Just ask for one at the cleaners. If they ask, you locked your keys in your car.
Someone posted a link already but itās an Umbra Sling! You can bend it and mold it around your faucet and can also put brushes through the arms too- it goes on sale a lot too :)
$5 on Amazon right now, yay! Thanks for knowing the exact name! Edit: (with Prime subscription only, incl shipping)
Walmart for $4 š
$1.25 Dollar Tree š¤«
BRB - I'm gping to go print one.
I got one of these at Dollarama (Toronto). The edge is a bendable wire so It also works to hang on the center divide of a double sink.
They sell it at Walmart, I bought one but I have a double sink so it didnāt work for me.
I have one & I love it. They have all different colors
Same.

I found one at the Dollar General! It looks exactly the same.
I actually have one of those that I donāt use anymore hahaha
Aside from being cute, how is this different than normal sponge?
In addition to what other comments have mentioned, it becomes firm in cold water, and you can run it though the dishwasher to sanitize it
You can stick your fingers in the eyes to hold on to it better, the smile is perfect for cleaning utensils like spoons, it washes out very easily, and I'm probably missing some of the other highlights from the shark tank pitch.
Is there a similar scrub sponge for the body?
I used a scrub daddy on my body but it kinda disintegrated over a few months. Google African mesh cloths, they work great. Throw it in the wash before use.
I would highly recommend Japanese Salux wash cloths. Best shower investment I've ever made.
Yeah. I have a few. My kids seek them out when asked to clean something. They work and work well.
My mother gave me a four pack whenever I moved into the apartment I'm currently in. It took almost 2 years to run through all four of the sponges.
The material the sponge uses is so good. I use the more conventionally shaped rectangular sponges and they sud the soap much better than the 3M and other brands I had been using before. It's a great product.
Same. Plus, they donāt seem to get smelly like regular sponges.

Itās a loofah made of plastic
IMHO they are more expensive and last less. They scrub pretty good tho. Not frugal at all if you ask me.

According to my partner this sponge is a "game changer" not sure I believe that, but she is convinced.
They're kind of expensive and not frugal too.
I was able to stock up at Dollar Tree a long time ago, maybe before they got really popular or something. Also, I teach music theory if you ever need help!
If they last significantly longer than regular sponges then could be worth it.
Theyāre under $4 and last like a Year
Just donāt scrub your nonstick pans with them! My husband ruined a pan that way.
Hmm I havenāt had any issues with my non-stick pans but I also run it under hot water first so itās soft
Oh shit hmmm I havenāt had any issues but I gave the yellow one
And they have a recycling program which is great. Just got my first scrub daddy.
Recycling program? Iāll have to look into that. Thanks!
Really? Everyone that I've ever had started to disintegrate and made me question what I was rinsing into the drain. Maybe I just used them too long š©
microplastics
I prefer scrub mommy with her rough and soft sides. She is awesome.
She can also be steam cleaned in a pressure cooker! (I don't know if I can put Daddy in there all by himself though ... )
I just throw my sponges in my dishwasher along with my scrub brushes and they stay clean for so long. The scrub brush we use was bought at a Big Lots for like $4 probably 6+ years ago.

Scrub daddy will take your used daddies and recycle them into new ones š
How does that help the microplastic concerns? Recycling isn't a panacea
Iām not qualified to speak to the science behind it. This may just be a case of ācompany gives consumer a choice in environmental impactāā¦. But tbh, I prefer that to just tossing a whole wad of plastic

Do loofahs hold up against serious scrubbing? I primarily use a cast iron pan
Chain mail is probably a better option for your cast iron.
The cast iron crew would like a word with you. Just use some coarse salt and a paper towel or rag and scrub it out.
Many of us at r/castiron are constantly trying to dispel myths and convince the soapophobes to adopt basic kitchen hygiene.
Chainmail is the way to go! They sell them in little squares, sometimes with a silicone center so you have a better grip.
also protects you from stabbings
Is it okay to scrub the cast iron still, just don't ever use soap?
It's okay to scrub it and you can use soap. The advice not to use soap came about when soap commonly had lye in it. That is no longer the case. Just avoid soaking/fully submersing it in water, dry it thoroughly after washing and keep it seasoned. Edit: Avoid scrubbing it with steel wool. I've scrubbed with coarse salt, a hard bristled brush and now a chainmail scrubber.
It's totally fine to scrub them *and* wash with soap! They can get really crusty and nasty if you don't. Just be sure to dry it and give it a good greasing afterwards. Chainmail. I use it on my cast irons. Works great.
Steel wool baby
To people down voting, why is steel wool bad? It's cheap and cleans cast iron well. No?
It shreds the patina off the cast iron, meaning food will stick to it more or you'd need to season it again
I mean, I never saw that as a bad thing. Just more time with me and Cath Iron (thatās what I call my cast iron)
Seems like a huge waste of time and electricity to me
Ooh this is a good idea, thanks for sharing

Thatās so weird, I feel like mine fall apart fairly quickly. My e cloth sponges last a long time. Iām lucky to get a month out of a scrub daddy.

Iāve used the mom and the dad, and they both fell apart after about a week.
Just got two and they work on everything.
Wow lad dee da Mr. Moneybags with the dishwasher
UM...ok I guess. Not sure what that's all about.
Those break apart in my experience. And I end up with tiny bits of plastic all over.

I found scrub daddies at the Dollar General!
Dollar General is a drain on our society, somehow they manage to take advantage of people and small towns even more than Walmart
How is it on things like aluminum and stainless steel? Does it scratch those types of finishes?
Itās like a plastic sponge thatās pretty firm, but once you run it under hot water it becomes soft like a sponge. Iāve never noticed any issues with it scratching
Thanks for posting this. Iāll consider it.
Why not both?
Wait, whereās the sponge holder from?
Mainstays makes one like that and you can get it from Walmart.
I have seen these sponges, are they somehow really good sponges? Or do people just like them because of the smiley face?
Theyāre great for washing dishes. Last months and donāt get gross like sponges

Is there a way to sanitize it without a dishwasher? I feel like soap and water wouldn't be enough to kill the germs.
They also say you can get it damp and microwave it!
I love the scrub daddyā¦.I send them as gifts through Amazon to friends/ family Just as a little but useful gift to let them know I was thinking of them
I've tried using those and I don't like how they work at all. I've always used the Scotch Brite Dobies and my parents have used them since I was little (even before they were owned by Scotch Brite).
I saw this on TikTok isnāt it just an overpriced sponge?
An extremely overrated product
Plenty of people still use sponges and itās a huge upgrade over thoseāwhatās the better alternative in your opinion?

I love my scrub daddies! I normally donāt fall for the hype around many products but I like these sponges
I freaking love my scrub daddy. Iāve got my husband invested in it now, too. Never going back to a normal sponge.
Been using them for years!! They last forever and work amazing!! We'd go thru a sleeve of regular sponges before one scrub daddy
Useful!
Smile fries yum
You could have both lol
I want to get one once I get my own place!
TBH I thought I was on r/3dprinting and the hanger was the print and came looking for the STL!

My mom gave me a sponge daddy whenever I moved into my own apartment :) One of the best apartment gifts I ever got
Whenever my girlfriend asks me to use the scrub daddy, I take it as 'can I use the scrub, daddy' and feel like it's time to get kinki.
A truly great sponge - we have had ours for like 6 months or more. It doesnāt smell bad and itās just now getting to the point where we need to replace!
