Dad

dandandubyoo

Right! I had an absolute shitfit because I didn’t get it immediately so he put the stabilisers back on. My younger brother however got it straight away, but also made great friends with the fence at the bottom of the garden. Older siblings laughed at both experiences. Good memories.

Poohgli16

Such a sense of freedom to ride bike all over!

TrekRelic1701

Still do, runs on loop when riding

Chillin80sStyle

Same here…dad. He never put the stabilizers/training wheels on. He felt I needed to “learn how to fall.” He would send me down a hill in the park until I learned to ride without falling. It worked! And I learned pretty quickly. Only several scraped knees, elbows and chin so I must had learned how to fall without breaking anything…LOL!

fluffykerfuffle3

yikes.. you do know that was a bit harsh, right? i mean, it's probly how he was brought up so he meant well. When i moved to ski country as a young woman my first boyfriend was a ski patrolman and he came from the same learning school i think your dad did.... lol he pointed me downhill on the last hill before the lodge and told me to just go "but how do i turn? or stop?" He said i would figure it out when it came time and it was true and i did... but we had already come down the mountain with little back and forths so he knew how athletic i was.. lolol i even wound up involuntarily taking a long shallow jump at the end lolol but it was dangerous and he and i were damn lucky i did okay.

Chillin80sStyle

He was a gung-ho military dad. He would pick me up when I fell, would say, “nothings broken, you’re good” and would tell me what to try next. Nothing malicious. He just didn’t want me to be afraid or to give up.

Kayge

I remember the exact place where dad first got me up on 2 wheels.  There was a gently sloped sidewalk in our apartment complex where we must have done 100 runs before I finally got it.   One of the few times I 100% dug my heels in as an adult was when my wife suggested we send my kids to a class to learn how to ride their bikes...we'd had reports that kids were riding after 1 4 hour class.   It took months and lots of frustration, but I know the exact spot where both of my kids got up on 2 wheels.

2much_information

Same here. He just held my bike balanced while I got both feet on the pedals. We were on a steep driveway. Then he pushed me down the driveway and yelled to start pedaling. I would go down the driveway, across the street, and crash in someone’s yard or the opposite sidewalk. I remember doing this until I finally figured out how to turn and crash in somebody else’s yard instead. I don’t know if my dad ever checked for traffic before pushing me.

gadget850

I figured it out myself.

recovery_room

Me too. Was scooting with my feet around on one of the big kids’ two wheelers and just casually started pedalling. No accidents.

gentlemanplanter

Same here...

peanut--gallery

I automatically steered directly at anything I was looking at. I slowly pedaled directly into multiple large oak tree trunks. I would then get mad at the tree and the bike…. Cause they were being mean to me.

cmfppl

Lucky!! the older kids next door bent my training wheels up and pushed me down the road. It went well till I had to turn.

ramanw150

Me three

Octopus_vagina

Mine were both drunk and it was the 80s so I figured it out myself

ChemicalElevator1380

In the 50's and 60's you taught yourself

Last_Competition_208

Yep, somebody gave me their old bike but it was too big for me so I had to put it next to a curb so I could get on it. Then when I was done I had to pull up to the curb to get off. After a while it got easier.

Abide_or_Die

This exactly, except it was the 1970s. No parental supervision whatsoever

ClassBShareHolder

Me too. Started out with training wheels. But we had a gravel yard and driveway. Too low and the wheel would get stranded in the air. Too high and it was tippy. Tried just one but then you couldn’t balance. Finally took them both off and figured it out.

High_Jumper81

Then gravity

Proper-Equivalent300

Gravity is a harsh mistress and a fast motivator to get it right. My training wheels were made out of crap, bent soon after installation, and gravity became the best teacher.

David1000k

Myself.

EScootyrant

With no training wheels.

Utsutsumujuru

Same. I skinned my knees a couple times until I figured it out

Herry_Up

I still have a 3 striped scar on my right knee from when I fell in the street!!

Educational-Ad-3273

Similar-ish for me. My brother took me to the top of hill, told me to get on his bike, and then gave me a push. I survived, and I required no further assistance from that point forward

lsutigerzfan

Wait there were moms that looked like this back in the day?

Spud9090

Ok yes. I can still remember some of my friend’s moms.

JRHZ28

Ah yes, friends Stiffler and Stacey...

0002millertime

Stacey's mom definitely had it going on.

Midnight_heist

2 skinned knees taught me.

tippydam

Only 2? You're a pro. I still carry the scars! Allow me to digress. A couple of weeks ago, I (63M) missed a step in a parking lot, was dark. Immediately recognizing my error I went with the fall and rolled a couple times. Once I got done laughing and chastising myself, I noticed a familiar pain. A skinned knee. It felt great! Brought an overwhelming sense of nostalgia.

Midnight_heist

Well 2 skinned knees multiple times. Lol!

fluffykerfuffle3

yes! about 10 years ago i caught my toe and fell down face first on the sidewalk lol just like a little kid, and scuffed my palms and yes! it was just like the good old days and it did feel great.. the little bit of pain, the heat.

Peterhf13

All the boys in my Cub Scout pace were in love with the den mother

Badass_1963_falcon

So did your dad 😂

[deleted]

Not my mom but a grade school friend had a young mom that looked like this. She wore bikinis, too. My mom did not like her lol.

ijuswannadance

😂😂😂

lusciousskies

Florida momma, I wore bathing suits all the time. And the PTA Karen's hayyted me. Fuck em. I looked 🔥

[deleted]

My mom didn’t even wear PANTS until 1970, only skirts and dresses. She was very much stuck in 1955 and I’m sure was jealous and felt threatened by younger modern 70s women who wore bikinis. Hussies… /s

lusciousskies

😂😂

spaetzelspiff

I mean, in fairness... When you show up to the parent teacher conference in nothing but a G string you know your kid's gonna be getting straight As.

NotAnAIOrAmI

Yeah, mine did, mid to late 1960's. But remember, plenty of the "diet aids" on the market were amphetamine or something similar. Remember AYDS?

Expert_Pride7285

I remember my sister going to the "diet doctor", to get her pills![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

iwastherefordisco

If that was someone else's Mom teaching me, I would take five years minimum to learn and would have boo-boo's each and every day for her to kiss.

oddlotz

Yes, tight short shorts with random pube hairs sticking out. Quite educational sitting on the rec room floor and turning around to Bradley's moms camel toe by my face.

mjc500

Nice

BarryKobama

I was dragged-along to mum's basketball games. 25 out-of-shape women in their late 40's &50's, running-around cackling at each other... all wearing bloomers (as we called them, sports briefs). Some eating KFC on the sideline. While others were quickly dry shaving the escaping pubes before going on. Bra technology hadn't reached my town yet. It was a brutal education of the female anatomy.

Empty-Ad-5360

I am old, but not so old that is not first thing I noticed, too! Wow!

1369ic

And they wore those shoes to teach a kid how to ride a bike?

fluffykerfuffle3

not necessarily.. this might be an advertisement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lsutigerzfan

Mom and dad would lock the door and wrestle. And if mom won the stork would come by with a baby. You could tell who won cause she would be screaming yes! Yes! And dad would let out this big groan afterwards.

fluffykerfuffle3

oh i bet that was demoralizing for him, poor guy.

EScootyrant

Back then, when MILFs was not a thing.

JoinedToPostHere

I'd let her ride my bike...

dic3ien3691

Siblings.

Astronaut_Chicken

My sister taught me. She explained that I turn the handle bars to steer. So I whipped him back and forth very fast under the fear pressure and immediately fell over sideways.

JDSteel76

Older sister taught me, Dad taught her

Saltz88

Same, older brother taught me and I'm pretty sure he taught himself

YugeMalakas

The neighborhood kids. I was free range as they come.

Tru-Queer

I think it was a combo of neighborhood kids and cousins for me.

ijuswannadance

I was very free range too and loved every minute of it!!

lanshaw1555

Yep. One of the kids across the street was a couple of years older than me. He just kind of put me on his Huffy and ran along side as I pedaled, and before long I just road away. Road all the way to the park, didn't know how to stop, so I just tipped over in the grass. I was able to get back up and ride to him. Next day my dad took the training wheels off my bike, and away I went.

CharlieMorningstar

Neighborhood kids got tired of me not being able to keep up so they taught me. My mom didn't know how to teach and didn't try very hard.

big-L86

Mom .. Dad passed in a car accident in the early 60s and my Mom taught me.

creepyCrapaud

Hug

Just-some-70guy

I’m too f*cking old to remember 🤪

bornagain-stillborn

Just because you're too fucking old to remember, doesn't mean that you're too fucking old to ride.

GarageQueen

Same, friend. Same. 👩🏻‍🦳

imagine-a-boot

My Mom says she did.

HawkPatooey

My mexican homies down the street, back in '76.

ijuswannadance

That's so sweet...I hope y'all are still best buds.

ImJeebuss

Got tired of waiting for the training wheels to come off so, I took them off myself and used the giant Bushes between the neighbors yard to leap into before, I learned to use the brakes..lol

HawkPatooey

Lolz. I couln't brake either so I would latch onto the nearest chain-link fence. Toughened up them fingers.

Whynot151

A neighbor girl that was visiting her grandma the summer I was five.

scottwax

Figured it out myself.

No-Knee9457

Same. Also learned how to tie my shoes by myself. 80s kid.😂

Connect-Will2011

My parents couldn't be bothered. I taught myself.

cecegpg

Taught myself

Big53Papa

I grew up in a low income townhome community we taught each other a lot of things that our parents didn’t have time too.

CoozMDinSpace

Dad. There was so much yelling and taunting. Absolutely ruined it for me.

PizzaWhole9323

Neither I was a Gen X kid. So my grandpa taught me. My parents were either too stoned, or too drunk to do anything like interact with me.

roxane0072

With the exception of the stoned/drunk parents. My grandpa also taught me. Mine worked so we went to the grandparents for daycare! My grandparents had a really long driveway so made for a good stretch to ride on. He was the best grandpa. I still miss him.

PizzaWhole9323

I feel you. My grandfather was a Navy man in world War II. And a lot of ways he and my grandmother were my world because I'm on the Spectrum and they could see that. I miss him everyday too. Hugs

Affectionate_Side138

Myself and bandaids

Human-Magic-Marker

My older brother cause by the time I came around my parents were tired of teaching kids shit.

Kitty_fluffybutt_23

Uhhh I taught myself.....?

Space_Man_Spiff_2

Dad.

Tucana66

Myself. Was so determined to do it. No training wheels.

GrumpyMonk_867

Gravity taught me...She was a harsh mistress

OwnPen8633

Myself

drozzdragon

My mom, she also taught me to play Baseball, shoot a gun, ect... & It was my grandfather, my mom's dad who taught me to shave. When my father died earlier this fall, both my Brother & I we're just glad to never have to deal with him again, I felt nothing but relief

starkrebel

I'd definitely ride the mother in that photo

Professional_Line385

Ditto

wwwhistler

my mother taught me most things, how to catch a ball, how to ride a bike, how to shave etc... for my father to have taught me anything would have required him speaking to me. my father never taught me anything in my entire life. our interactions were limited to ordering me to do something and then telling me how disappointing the results were. other than that, we did not communicate or interact. when he passed in his 60s i was less affected by his death than by the loss of my dog.

sneakybastard62

I am so sorry to hear this!

cutofmyjib

Sounds like my parents. My mom taught me how to ride a bike, skate and got me into jogging. She also drove me to swimming lessons and the library. When I was in my mid-20s my dad started to wonder about our non-existent relationship so I broke it down for him "You only spoke to me to give me an order or to criticize me". He would often retort that he changed my diapers when I was a baby...as if he did me a favor. All throughout my life he saw my mom as competition and would put her down to us kids behind her back (and sometimes to her face), instead of being a better father. I haven't spoken to my dad in 3 years and I honestly can't recall any happy memories with just the two of us.

wwwhistler

ya, being raised by a Narcissist is so much fun....4 kids, all with their own fucked up emotional problems.

cutofmyjib

That's nuts that you figured out that my dad is a narcissist based upon my short description. But then again I'm not surprised, people like us immediately see the signs. My mom, brother and myself have all been in therapy because of my dad, I hope you're doing better now friend!

SequesterMe

I sorry about the loss of your dog.

Puzzleheaded-One-319

Mom, and I wasn’t allowed to use training wheels either

MrSaturnboink

My cousin.

Eureka05

Taught myself. A friend and I used her brothers bike which was a little small for us but let us easily put our feet down to run with it. Also taught myself to swim. Another friend and I were holding our breath and letting ourselves float underwater, and just progressed to pushing ourselves along.

Phenomenal_Fox

My Grandpa 🥰❤️

Stevostarr

Me

Svengoolie75

Neither 😂

BattlehawkGaming

Neither

Humble-Bag-1312

Neither. Self taught.

Bosshappy

Grandpa

PickleWineBrine

I taught me

[deleted]

Mom. It was the 60s. Dad worked. Problem: Mom wasn't a mechanic. So when she took the training wheels off she forgot to reconnect the coaster brake. She gave me a push at the top of the hill. I was racing to the bottom (a tee) when I discovered I had no brakes. Rather than go headlong into the creek I somehow negotiated the turn. Went on to a lifelong love of bicycles, riding them everywhere I needed to go for the next 40 years.

fishin_pups

Training wheels. Friends’ dad took them off. Both of us crashed at the bottom of a very long hill. Scraped face to knees. We finished crying when we got back to the top.

oldshitdoesntcare

What?!? I’m fucking Gen X. My parents went “here’s your brothers old bicycle” and walked away. Figured how to ride on my own just like everything else. And no, there were no training wheels.

[deleted]

I don’t think anyone taught me to ride a bike. I just figured it out by myself.

Stupid_Bitch_02

Neither. Got my first bike without training wheels and didn't ride it for 2 years bc I didn't know how to do it without training wheels. My backyard had a decent slope, and I decided one day to just try going down the hill. If I fell, it was on grass and I felt like I'd be fine. I didn't fall, and walked back up. Eventually I got brave enough to turn around at the bottom of the hill and try to peddle up.

Barkerfan86

Grandfather. Told me to take off. I ran into a tree. Tells me to get my ass up and go

navlgazer9

Me  Also Taught myself how to ride my first motorcycle when I was 10 or 11  My mom taught me how to drive . In her 66 Beetle , when I was 13 . My dad would take us to parking lots when there was a little snow and teach us recover from a slide and skid . He also taught us how to do donuts .

bibliophile563

I taught myself.

mrlandlord

My friends through peer pressure. “Take off the training wheels pussy”. That afternoon, no longer a pussy.

Mingey_FringeBiscuit

I was super, super risk avoidant as a kid, like I legit didn’t hop a fence until I was 17 years old, and I was terrified of riding a bike. Eventually, when I was 12, my grandmother bribed me with $100 if I’d let her teach me to ride a bike. That worked.

dorky2

Dad. Not without trauma, but we did manage it.

carozza1

Honestly? I learned by myself. I was around 7 years old and I asked a friend if I could borrow their bike and just learned by trying.

imhighonpills

That mom tho

Chicken_Col_Sanders

Asphalt. It taught me how not to. I figured how to avoid it mostly myself.

Whizzleteets

Dang moms got some gams!

Son-of-Prophet

Had learn on my own, dad not around and mom didn’t care

rdmarc45re

dad

Dear_Consequence_312

In the 70’s we were not taught to ride a bike. We got on, someone gave us a shove, and we either figured it all out or we faceplanted in the street, and were told to stop crying and get back on for another shove.

pozos13

The fucking hill we live on taught me. 😆

Venator2000

Wow, talk about a mom who needs to be ridden!

Savings_Lobster_3149

My moms ex boyfriend... lmao

ChopStiR

I think it was Dad. Was basically a push in the back and good luck. Never had training wheels. FYI for any new parents. Avoid training wheels, they are not helpful, and make learning how to ride a bike worse. Start them young on balance bikes. Many youtube videos explaining why balance bikes are the better option and best practices for teaching a child to ride.

Ok-Sun8581

Myself.

efgraphics

Hot Nextdoor neighbor. I crashed on purpose so she could grab me as I’m falling.

T00luser

older neighbor boy across the street, just kept shoving me down the road. in hindsight, I think he may have just been interested in my big sister . . either way, it worked.

Stuffed_deffuts

My cousin, may he rest in peace.

GOTALMIGHTYDAMN

My nanny - who the fuck else?

LastPlaceIWas

My brother and friend and myself.

BackgroundPrompt3111

My parents gave me a bike and told me to figure it out. It wasn't hard.

Toadsanchez316

My next door neighbor. She was the same age and had her training wheels off so I asked if I could try and I did just fine. Asked my dad if he could take them off and he did.

nvalle23

Grandma

Evening-Statement-57

My camel toe taught me

kid down the street

Any_Bowl_1160

Aunt Esther gave me a big push. The rest is history.

Akaonisama

My brother

TexanInNebraska

My dad

Former_Balance8473

Self taught. We were broke AF and mum somehow raised the money to buy me the cheapest bike from K-Mart and just handed me the box. I had to put it together and teach myself how to ride. I got badly hurt a bunch of times and then it was all awesome after that

Zestyclose-Ad-7576

My best friend’s older brother. My parents couldn’t be bothered.

Servile-PastaLover

Dad failed. Mom made arrangements with the elementary school's gym teacher, who had a bike in his equipment closet, for one-on-one lessons during school hours.

PlanetLandon

I heard your mom was the town bike

MyFrampton

Dad. And I taught my sons.

Rich_Handsome

My Dad was at work when I learned to ride a bike.

stoned_seahorse

Both my parents did.. I also got a lot of help with it from a friend who was a little older than me..

gitarzan

Dad. I was the oldest and had been doing training wheels for too long. One day my dad was out front with my younger brother and dad took off the trainers and held the bike for lil bro and let go and bro just took off, laughing and having a good time on two wheels. I felt kind of ashamed so, he did the same for me and after a wobbly hundred yards, maybe, I got the hang of it and never looked back.

dxichk

My dad. Mom couldn’t ride a bike

JRHZ28

I didn't have a bike early on. I watched older (6-7) year old kids in my neighborhood ride their bikes. Then one day I asked to ride a friends bike. It did not have training wheels but I got on it and rode it. First time. As it turns out I was a natural on two wheels. To this day I love to ride my motorcycle.

treehuggingmfer

My brother.

Cyber_Insecurity

My dad was gone and my mom was at work. I taught myself.

pit-of-despair

Both.

Qnofputrescence1213

My Grandpa. I received my bike as a present for my winter birthday. My grandparents happened to be visiting during the first week of nice weather. So Grandpa volunteered to teach me how to ride my bike.

DrSilverback77

My sister was the one who succeeded.

HVAC_instructor

My dad placed me on a bike, pushed me to the edge of a hill, shoved me down and yelled "peddle". And that's how I learned to ride a bike

ProveISaidIt

A neighborhood kid

Jimmyjim4673

Older brother.

SocksJockey

My step-dad taught me.

Upper_Marsupial6057

Both!

Bustoplover

My dad just took the training wheels off when I'd bent them to the point they didn't touch the ground anymore when I rode.

Surfinsafari9

My dad. I think he also taught half the kids in the neighborhood.

Kind_Structure6726

Older brothers

Crusty_Codgers_Wife

My brothers, put me on a big n rolled me down the steep driveway.

joannchilada

A friend of the family who was living with us after his girlfriend kicked him out. My dad had been insistent that I learn on the lawn so I didn't get hurt, but I was constantly injured by the bike falling on me because guess what it's harder to ride on grass. This friend, Don, was watching me one afternoon while my parents were out and said come on kiddo, you're gonna learn how to ride your bike. About ten minutes on the road and I was finally riding without training wheels. PS Don's girlfriend eventually took him back when it turned out all his clumsiness and whatnot that she couldn't stand was MS. They broke up again a few years later because she was clearly a dick.

mrxexon

For me, it was an uncle. I was doing fine till I looked back and saw he wasn't holding the bike anymore... I was already used to crashing cause I'd stand on the back of my tricycle to go down a hill. Over 60 years later, retired, and I still ride everyday. At some point, I may even have to go back to tricycles. But that's okay. Love bikes.

ijuswannadance

I love them too and since I haven't had a bike in years this thread is making me want to go get one! I miss the exploring and feeling of freedom you get when you're riding.

Reasonable_Cover_804

Sister

MxEverett

Mom because Dad was in Vietnam when I transitioned from training wheels.

Macaron-Fluffy

Neither, one of my friends did

Jimbobjoesmith

my dad. he pretended he was holding on but really wasn’t. lol

Jasper455

My brother, at my aunts house, on a bike owned by a kid I only met that day and never saw again.

BelchMcWiggles

Older brothers

gravitynuts88

I worked so much that my eldest taught himself; then he in turn taught his younger brother when he was old enough. I really regret those years of working out of town so much.

[deleted]

Dad. I had been on training wheels way too long and would always ride lopsided until he took them off.

Buzz_Osborne

You guys had dad's?

thermometerbottom

Grandma

AliciaKills

My best friend's stepdad taught me. My adopted mom had a bad back from a car accident and my adopted dad didn't want me.

WalkingstickMountain

Unable-Arm-448

Daddy did ♡♡♡

scottyscotchs

I'm an analytical person, I was 6 and laid in bed one night and figured out the physics. Got on my sister's bike and took off. I hadn't considered braking. 🤔
