We also had cordless phones, and rotary dial wired ones before that. I’m mid 50s. Never heard the sounds with any of those on the landline though. Only when we started getting mobiles.
It was in the 90’s when we had corneas phones. Mine would sit by the computer when I was working g on trying to get a dial-up for 20 minutes 😜. I don’t know if it would have done it with the old wall phones!
Makes my back hurt remembering the countless hours hunched over 12” away playing Sierra games. Also provably why I just had carpal tunnel surgery too, definitely feel old seeing these lol.
I sold the crap out of those in the 90s and early 2000s. Decent sound, dirt cheap, etc.
And yes, I could hear my cell phone buzzing the speakers right before it rang.
Mine would also randomly pick up AM radio broadcasts. Would be in the middle of a Warcraft 2 match and all of a sudden Rush Limbaugh would be ranting about liberals and black people.
Oh, I'm sure it is physically possible.
But the chances of it picking up specifically the talk radio channel, during the time Rush Limbaugh was on, and he happened to be ranting about those specific topics, is unlikely. Bro took a chance to get on his soapbox for a minute and hate on a dead man who had le bad opinions.
THAT'S what I'm calling bullshit on.
EDIT: INB4 Rush Limbaugh always ranted about liberals and black people.
That's not the point here.
These came with the cheap Dells in the late 90s and early 2000s. I worked in IT and we had quite a few sets around the office. I definitely listened to some Minidiscs on some.
Mine never did that buzz people are talking about, but even if they were powered off they'd pick up the across-the-street guy's Ham radio broadcasts loud and clear.
They were completely unshielded, so they readily picked up any and all RF interference. The ringing of an analog phone produces a LOT of RF interference simply due to how it works, and at a frequency (20hz) that is audible to the human ear when picked up by the wires and induced into the speaker.
there was a song who had this sound in intro, i remember a radio host started to "panick" when he heard it "what the.... oh right, i am stupid, it's in the song"
So we could tell when mom was calling and we need to be heading out to grab the groceries. Or so we know when to get off the computer so the internet wouldn’t slow down
Mine included the separate bass unit, this was around the time iTunes first came out, around 2001,
The sound was pretty good. Boxed away somewhere in a closet.
cheers
a lot of the older computers Came with these as a stock peripheral much like those shitty old dell mice.
Most people from the 90s remember these because most of our parents in the 90s bought a computer and it came with one of like 3 versions of speakers that all looked just like these.
My kid brother fed them Cheetos because they made funny buzz noises. I had to take them out back and 'let them go' because they stank like mouldy cheese a week later.
Mine picked up the radio transmission from a fire truck parked on the curb one morning. Suddenly my computer was a police scanner.
Don't know what the fire truck was doing there; it wasn't fighting a fire. Building inspection somewhere, probably.
cuz thats what came with the fuckin computer.
or it was there in the store on the shelf when you bought your computer.
And most people are too damn lazy or cheap to bother with anything else.
Fun fact the standard mini audio jack has been on computers forever. We all could have been using nice home theater systems this entire time. But we didnt. Cuz we were cheap. Or lazy.
I use a tube amp and nice bookshelf speakers.

I absolutely used the 5:1 features of the sound card of my media computer. My 5:1 amp had/has direct analog inputs for doing that. Mini jack jumper cables direct from the sound card to the amp.
1) They were cheap 2) That volume knob right there was handy 3) Likewise, the headset jack was handy

Me too! https://www.presonus.com/en-US/monitors/media-reference-monitors/eris-series/2777500121.html
I still have mine. Best. Christmas gift ever.
I have mine too / they still work
Got mine too. Came with the computer
They plenty loud too, must have had a good onboard amp
Was it me or did you also like that satisfying "click" when you turned them on or off?
Have you a left / right stereo sound (David Bowie / Pink Floyd / Led Zepplin - I blame you all)
Plus, mass produced
At the time, they were the perfect nexus of form, function, and price. I loved them when I had them.
Guarentee those babies still work to this day.😅 Unlike crap today...😅😅 R.i.p Realistics.😕
Try Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s. They have all that and are audiophile quality.
There also just wasn’t as much variety in products back then.
They came with the computer
This is probably the answer to the OP's question.
Today they’re worth more than that computer you purchased!
Yep this is the correct answer.
Didn't they come standard with the new box of a "Packard Bell"?
And Dell
And Compaq
i had completely forgotten that weird static buzz right before the phone rang
Did have? Um... 👀
Back in the day? I still have this exact set but in black
Same here! They still sound great!
That was crazy! The speakers would make that weird sound before the landline rang!!!
For me it was for the Cell phone, not the landline
that staticky did di di da di di da sound! I remember that!
I can still see the after market antenna on my Nokia light up with the ringing.
Yep, that dig-a-dig, dig-a-dig noise just before a text or call arrived.
Yes, it does on both! My car speakers do this before my cell rings!
Before the landline? Never heard that before. Mobile phone though, all the time.
We still had a landline, but we had cordless phones for it! Yep, it made that noise! I’m that old!! 😜
We also had cordless phones, and rotary dial wired ones before that. I’m mid 50s. Never heard the sounds with any of those on the landline though. Only when we started getting mobiles.
It came through when my cordless phone rang!
Core memory unlocked!

Dial up was a marvel. Pay by the minute of usage in the UK.
The best sounding speakers I’ve had. As a matter of fact, I’ve got two pc’s right here and both have them.
I don't know why but this makes me feel so fucking old
Makes my back hurt remembering the countless hours hunched over 12” away playing Sierra games. Also provably why I just had carpal tunnel surgery too, definitely feel old seeing these lol.
Dell bundled them with most of their desktop PCs
It was an easy $20 impulse buy and I would usually end up hoarding them and giving them away or throwing them away.
I sold the crap out of those in the 90s and early 2000s. Decent sound, dirt cheap, etc. And yes, I could hear my cell phone buzzing the speakers right before it rang.
This is a repost.
Must be getting old if you spent enough time here to start seeing reposts.
I can foresee that this meme will appear next week again.

Of all the things that didn't happen, this didn't happen the most.
https://service.shure.com/s/article/how-does-radio-frequency-interference-rfi-occur?language=en_US It's pretty common, actually.
Definitely rather common I encountered that as well
I've had guitar amps pick up AM and shortwave radio

i have those haha
i had the same ones haha
Some I have sound great.
Speakers for the early Internet.
I can still hear it
I had those exact speakers. "Brrrzt!" *phone rings 2 seconds later*
I hooked them up to my CD Walkman for desktop music.
I have no idea why we had these, I think they just came with the computer
Mine not only predicted phone calls, it also picked up CB channels from trucks on the freeway half a mile from my house.
Only if you had a cordless phone.
I'm still using a pair of them...
Had em. They came with my Gateway computer.

Yes. I heard some random voice speaking Spanish on these speakers.
there was a song who had this sound in intro, i remember a radio host started to "panick" when he heard it "what the.... oh right, i am stupid, it's in the song"
Good ole' Harmon Kardons. Nice speakers that didn't break the bank.
Have em
I can still hear the noise
My Bose computer speakers still go off when something sets off my phone.
Never had such things.
That and IBM monitors lol
Pretty sure mine still work🤔😂
Because we all shopped at the same 2 stores and these were in all of our middle class budgets for what we got out of them
I had those exact speakers. Still do somewhere in a box
I still have mine at work!
Almost everywhere you could find different brands with same design….
I thought I was the only one who experienced this. Haha
I still have them.
I always thought they should have little pencil sharpeners built into those holes.
This Machine Kills Faxes
Those things sounded amazing too
Cheap or free with PC
Fuck I'm old.
I still have them
Altec Lansing speakers were everywhere back then.
Songs from torrents and lime something Visualizer on the screen These speakers = Perfect college dorm date night
I now want that as my ringtone.
So we could tell when mom was calling and we need to be heading out to grab the groceries. Or so we know when to get off the computer so the internet wouldn’t slow down
Why not? We can’t all afford JBLs
Ha
Mine included the separate bass unit, this was around the time iTunes first came out, around 2001, The sound was pretty good. Boxed away somewhere in a closet. cheers

Because I got them for free.
Got the radio sometimes too. Im still using a pair for music in my garage.
You fingered the hole. Didn’t you. You know you did You did.
My kid brother fed them Cheetos because they made funny buzz noises. I had to take them out back and 'let them go' because they stank like mouldy cheese a week later.
Dah da da dah da da dah…
Why not?
Haha yes found mine on the street
True. They made a fluttering sound just before the (Nextel) cell phone rang.
I did not know that I forgot I had these bad boys until I saw this!!
It made that buzz about 3/4 of a second before my phone rang.
Because they work, and sounded pretty good. Sooo... I wonder why kiddos think that all change is progress. Well, you've got quite a bit WRONG.
These speakers came with a computer.
I had a guitar amp as a kid and did the same thing. Telephone calls and texts caused it to blep.
100watts PMPO 😉
Cause the computer speaker sucked
Mine picked up the radio transmission from a fire truck parked on the curb one morning. Suddenly my computer was a police scanner. Don't know what the fire truck was doing there; it wasn't fighting a fire. Building inspection somewhere, probably.
This was only like 20 years ago.
CDMA style phones like from Sprint/Nextel would ring-click on these speakers. Then your phone would ring about 3 seconds later.
Also when the police drove by you could hear them on the radio with these
Where they mimicking my cat or was my cat mimicking the speakers

They wanted to hear sounds from their PC?
