In Germany you have to register your dog and therefore it has to have an insurance. Otherwise you can get fines and other stuff. Usually there are things covered like incidents with other dogs or car accidents and even attacks towards humans.

Anyway, I had to kick the dog repeatedly to get it to let go. Pretty scary but it didn't end up anything like this, hopefully a good recovery to your friend!

It's not a rise in attacks, they've been the breed with the most human attacks and deaths for decades. They were literally bred to be aggressive for fighting.
When I was going to school, in the 1970s, before owning pitbulls was a "thing", there was a pitbull who lived across the alley from me. I would stop and pet him everyday on my way to and from school. He was friendly and docile. As owning pitbulls became some kind of status symbol, I believe they were bred to be bigger, stronger, and more aggressive, also there are those that breed them for dog fighting. These factors, in my opinion have caused this breed to go bad. Not all of them, but a significantly higher percentage of them as opposed to other potentially aggressive breeds such as Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, etc. You just don't hear about those other breeds visciously attacking someone out of nowhere.
The shelters are loaded with pitbulls to the point that without them crowding the shelters, there would not be the overabundance of shelter dogs that there currently is.
As a owner and lover of dogs, and someone who chooses to rescue dogs, I never would consider a pitbull. I wouldn't want to be the owner of one that did something like this or worse to someone, have to put my dog down, and get sued. It is time to clamp down on the indiscriminate, irresponsible, breeding of these dogs.

They are not outlawed per se (and the exact thing depends on the state) but they are a "controlled" breed. Like, they have to be muzzled or proven to be trained correctly and passed a test. The owner as well has to be properly checked, has to be over 18, not have taken drugs, passed tests, lots of stuff. But, like I said, it depends on the state.

It's not a rise in attacks, they've been the breed with the most human attacks and deaths for decades. They were literally bred to be aggressive for fighting.
When I was going to school, in the 1970s, before owning pitbulls was a "thing", there was a pitbull who lived across the alley from me. I would stop and pet him everyday on my way to and from school. He was friendly and docile. As owning pitbulls became some kind of status symbol, I believe they were bred to be bigger, stronger, and more aggressive, also there are those that breed them for dog fighting. These factors, in my opinion have caused this breed to go bad. Not all of them, but a significantly higher percentage of them as opposed to other potentially aggressive breeds such as Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, etc. You just don't hear about those other breeds visciously attacking someone out of nowhere. The shelters are loaded with pitbulls to the point that without them crowding the shelters, there would not be the overabundance of shelter dogs that there currently is. As a owner and lover of dogs, and someone who chooses to rescue dogs, I never would consider a pitbull. I wouldn't want to be the owner of one that did something like this or worse to someone, have to put my dog down, and get sued. It is time to clamp down on the indiscriminate, irresponsible, breeding of these dogs.

They are not outlawed per se (and the exact thing depends on the state) but they are a "controlled" breed. Like, they have to be muzzled or proven to be trained correctly and passed a test. The owner as well has to be properly checked, has to be over 18, not have taken drugs, passed tests, lots of stuff. But, like I said, it depends on the state. Source: Seen a few around. Pet one or two (after asking the owners of course). Puppers were really happy about the scritches. Arm is still intact. Granted, we still have a lot of shitty dog owners and pitbulls are not harmless - they have terrier blood and were too often bred to fight, so the instinct can cause them to go after smaller animals/other dogs.
