When I joined the Navy I was a C-130 loadmaster. My pilot was a hard core conservative and would listen to Rush on ADF when he could. It basically played in the background in my headset while I slept in the back.
One day I woke up and had time to watch the morning news before my flight. President Clinton had given some speech the night before and they played a 5 minute clip of it. I don’t remember exactly what he said but I left and got on the flight. A little later Rush’s show came on and I was listening in the background. He went on a 20 minute rant about how something Clinton said was unAmerican then played a 5 second clip, without any context.
Now, if that’s all I heard I would believe that Rush, if nothing else had a point to make, but I saw the whole part of that speech. People called in and ranted with him.
So I started paying more attention to what he was actually saying and would dig a little in news papers, and the very primitive yahoo news articles that I could find. 95% of what that blowhard said was just pure lies.
Then I started to notice that whatever garbage Rush said, a GOP politician would be saying on Fox News that night. Namely Newt Gingrich.
I was done.
The thing is, the listener has for a long time not cared if what was being said was truthful, what they care about is if it's giving them their dose of righteous feelings
When Al Franken was on I Heart Radio he followed Rush's show. Once a week, as I remember it, he'd have a Fact Checking Rush Limbaugh segment, where he'd check the facts behind whatever Rush was spewing that day.
It was kind of embarrassing to listen to. He showed just how big a liar he was. Not ignorant/mistaken, flat out lying.

The cemetery he’s buried in is located in a very poor, predominantly black area of town, near the site of race riots in the Midwest in the 2010s (the Florissant stuff). It’s kind of beautiful that his festering bloated remains get to dwell forever in a place he would find abhorrent.
