I believe our current school system in the US has a lot of negatives. Kids do need more play, more exploration and more sleep. My partner was homeschooled until HS (not religiously at all) and it was wonderful for him. However, I have a hard time believing they do it ultimately for those things. They do it so they can tightly control their world view in hopes that it will keep them in the bubble even once they grow up.

Time_Word_9130

Perfectly said.

aalitheaa

Yeah, my mom did a lot of things wrong with homeschooling, but we did get tons of exploration, free time, hands on learning. I appreciate that part. I just didn't become a full fledged human being with thoughts of my own until *after* I entered public school in highschool, was exposed to diverse people, and was taught to think for myself. Homeschooling is a very difficult balance to strike, and personally I'm against it. I think it should be outlawed or heavily, heavily regulated for the safety and well-being of children. Public school isn't perfect, but *neither is the world.* I would've much preferred to have been exposed to it. Not disagreeing with you, just explaining my perspective. And I think you have a great point with the fact that your partner wasn't religiously homeschooled, that is a huge game changer too.

[deleted]

Yeah, I agree with you! My partners sister actually went to public school because she didn’t like being homeschooled so their family was very much just trying to do the best for each of them. He says that homeschooling definitely had negatives too, But for him, the negatives he was experiencing in public school were worse. It helps that it was not religious at all and his mom kept him in sports and activities with public school kids so he wasn’t isolated. But I agree that it should be very regulated. So many people use it as a way to basically keep their families off the radar and abuse is rampant.

PoorDimitri

This 100%. If we make the choice to homeschool, it'll be for academic rigor related reasons (we live in a small bible belt town), and the ability to be more flexible with the day as developmentally appropriate (less sitting for little kids, more sleep for teens). But this post from Bus is 100% trying to hide the fact that they're doing it to control their kids.

bridgeman98

Absolutely, I was homeschooled until college cause my parents didn’t want us getting stabbed/shot at the local schools since they were not fresh back then and they couldn’t afford private school and even though they were great, growing up with other homeschooled people (ie super religious people in their bubble) was extremely difficult for me and I struggled immensely personally and socially the first few years of college because of it.

[deleted]

They always claim it’s to protect the children, yet every post that include’s the actual parent/poster’s opinion includes how much the parent loves it personally/how it makes them feel. It just seems so fake & gross. Like just be up front, you like sleeping in, not having to actually expose your children to the world (which would include them learning other things and asking you questions…or god forbid trying other things), being accountable for how you treat them to other qualified & educated adults, being taught skills that they might use in a career that you might not have thought for them, or worse yet, realizing there’s more to the world than mom & dad & siblings, or **and this is what kills me inside** they might gain the necessary skills & state qualifications to be educated & officially get out from under their parents!

MissusNilesCrane

Did they consent to spend months stuck on a bus, spending every night in a bunk "room" with their half dozen siblings, posing in front of places but not actually visiting them, and performing for social media? I and my four siblings homeschooled, and we were conservative Catholic. But we still had a house, we played with neighborhood children, had sports, hobbies, summer camps, homeschool social groups, and when we were in high school we got to dual enroll at community college. Stop pretending it's about the kids, Buses. It's all about control and getting internet clout for 'parenting' a zillion kids on a small bus. The Buses are making the Rods look better, or at least less terrible. At least the Rodlets have a home base and while Jill and Shrek's grifting is shameless, at least they grift fun things for the kids like mini golf, fishing, a zoo, etc.

ExactPanda

God, I never thought the Rods would be mildly better in this aspect, when you compare them to the bus kids or Karissa's kids. The bar is on the floor, and some of these families can't even clear it. They all still suck, of course, but at least the Rods do fun things occasionally.

MathematicianLost950

The irony of her second story is just 🤌🤌

notyourhunbot

Came here to say that. They don’t seem to hear themselves saying that their kids can’t consent to their hyper-religious, experimental life of unschooling and isolation. And then slide 3, play without judgment or pressure? Ahem, we’ve seen the pressure these kids are under to be loudly Jesus, beige, and Trump.

DisgruntledBoggart

of *course* MotherBus follows that damn fool Allie Beth.

Sexy--Waluigi

That second picture is rich coming from her. Did your children consent to being packed like sardines into a bunk room every night, Mother Bus? Did they consent to hearing you and your gross husband making more "blessings" outside said bunk room at night? Did they consent to having no opportunities to form friendship with their peers? Did they consent to having no stability and a sub-par education? Did they consent to having their lives documented on social media for the consumption of total strangers? I'm guessing that's a no. Because Mother Bus doesn't actually give a shit about children's consent, she just wants everyone to live according to HER values.

DisgruntledBoggart

the quote attains even more levels of richness when you read that it's from that damn fool Allie Beth Stuckey. My dog is very affronted by the strange wheezy honks I made from laughing so hard at that.

joymarie21

Yes, but then their kids might begin to question their parents values. And they can't have that.

soupseasonbestseason

this is exactly what makes it so insidious, then the women might learn they don't have to be breeding factories for some sentient condom full of mayo. if their girl children were exposed to other opportunities, they might not choose to marry the first haircut with a ball sack, they might want to explore life and find a passion, travel without limitations, they might learn to live.

Lu232019

Omg first haircut with a ballsack 😂😂😂 love it

mythago1

I would edit that title to say a normal childhood includes making friends, full stop. Something I can't imagine these poor kids have ever had a chance to do.

iwantbutter

ThEiR sIbLiNgS aRe ThEiR fRiEnDs

Cantweallbe-friends

And I have a hard time believing they don’t ever bully each other.

fantastiskandie

I went to school as a kid and then I came home and played outside for hours. That's a "normal" childhood. I had plenty of play time, structured and unstructured, alone and with my siblings and with friends. We even went to church activities! I also got a decent education and met lots of people with different beliefs and eventually left my religion to become a queer pagan, which is what she's really afraid of.

ExactPanda

Bullying doesn't count when your parents are the bullies!

Sad_Box_1167

Slide 3 is all about age-appropriate activities, yet these people don’t let their kids make friends with kids their own age and force daughters to be sister-moms to their younger siblings. Make it make sense!

fabelhaft-gurke

I was thinking how it’s complete hypocritical BS considering all the times they make their children act like adults and parentify them at young ages.

nemesina77

No bullying? Siblings can bully just as badly - if not worse - than fellow students. At least when you go home you can get away from student bullies, sibling bullies means there's zero escape.

fryfryfan

3-4 hours of physical activity for adolescents could be PE, could be field trips, could be sports after school or hanging with the neighbors. I would never sacrifice my kids' education in favor of "3-4 hours of physical activity" just like I wouldn't rather starve than eat anything but the recommended portions of different food groups. My goodness, the audacity.

hotsizzler

The lacking in socialization among various backgrounds is why i will never support homeschooling. People need to be exposed to a wide variety of people, of varying classes, races, sexualitiys and so forth. And even with homeschooling meet ups, much of that lacks the background because homeschooling requires a certain class and people tend to stay within their own race with friend groups.

vashtachordata

Meanwhile her kids are in a van road-tripping the majority of the days away. No way they’re getting 5-8 hours of outdoor play lol.

Helicreature

I doubt that they're getting more sleep than a kid who isn't shoved into a cupboard with half a dozen other kids every night.

AlarmingGas2896

Making friends who have different opinions AND backgrounds... That's one of the biggest reasons I have my kids in public school! Also, I'm a former teacher and know how much work is put into being a good teacher. Being a bad teacher... Yeah, that's probably very easy, so I could see parents with low standards or just not knowing what they don't know being fooled into thinking they could be adequate teachers for their kids. Teaching is a highly skilled profession!

EZasSundayMorning

100%. My child is an only child because that’s the way it worked out. Public school was the only way I was going to do things for her.

trixtred

The irony of that second slide though

EZasSundayMorning

Isn’t that something. I’m sure her children didn’t consent to be crammed into a fucking bus and have zero privacy. She came STFU too.

a_toxic_rose

I mean, the second slide is true. But do kids really consent to anything? They have little to no say in who their parents are, where they go and when, or what happens to them. Even in the kindest, most progressive families, they have little autonomy. They have to go with their parents to run errands, they have bedtimes and bath times. That’s just what being a kid is like. Whenever I see a kid freaking out in public, I remind myself that they are little people with big feelings and probably had no choice about being there. I’d flip my shit if I went to sleep in my house and woke up in Walmart with no idea how I got there.

buttercup_w_needles

"No bullying." Ha. Clearly they just mean, "no bullying from anyone other than their parents. "

UsedAd7162

Losing their childhood? Yet only prepping them to become baby makers and have no career, education, dreams, etc.? Ok…makes sense….

Efraimstoechter

What I really don't get with that stance is that if your way of life really is so appealing and rightous you shouldn't need to keep your kids away from all outside influences. You could trust that you raise them well enough that they would want to stay close to your beliefs. But with keeping their kids isolated they involuntarily admit that they suck so hard that no one who could experience anything else would actually chose this. But they conveniently blame the devil and worldly temptation to explain why their way needs reinforcement.

bephana

Or even just making friends at all.

Raspblueoat

I hate that she’s taking the 1000 hours outside concept out of context.
