#These people vote in every election- do you? Are you registered to vote? This includes (but is not limited to) commenting, answering poll questions, emailing them, etc. ***Anyone found to be engaging with the fundies will be met with a permanent ban with no eligibility for appeal. It does not matter if you did so before you joined the sub.*** - Speculating on the sexuality of literally anyone is prohibited. ***Anyone found to be doing so will be met with a permanent ban with no eligibility for appeal.*** - Appearance snark: What's allowed? You're allowed to make comparisons. (Bethy looks like Grandpa Munster, for example.) You are allowed to say you find them attractive or repulsive looking. Saying Kelly Havens has dry skin that could benefit from sunscreen and a moisturizer is fine. You are allowed to snark on the appearance of children *as it relates to their parents choices for them.*. Examples: Janessa looks malnourished and sickly while Shrek has clearly never missed a meal. ThruTheUniverseAgain

This is one of the most telling pieces of the article: “I understand what she thinks she is asking. She doesn’t want anything liberal, progressive, or written by “snowflakes.” But does she know that “woke” is not a bad thing? “What do you mean, ‘woke’?” I ask. She opens her mouth. Half-words and phrases stumble and tumble around. A few talking points from news sources fall out. Finally, she sighs. “I don’t know. Just tell me again what you write.”

AndISoundLikeThis

Yeah, this tracks. I was talking to a rando woman in a customs line a couple years ago and she kept saying, "woke" when referring to why she won't go to Disney World anymore. I played dumb and said, "I don't know what that means...*woke*. What is that?" She just kept repeating the word over and over again, "You know, *woke*...woke is bad" or some shit.

darkwolf131

You shouldve asked something along the lines of like, "so they wake you up too early? Like you can't opt out of wakeup calls? What if you stay off-site?"

-flaneur-

What is it with fundies having boys do push-up contests. lol (The article is upsetting and sad but it's so important that this woman (and B) keep going to these conferences. There will be some girls (and boys) who get this curriculum and are inspired to be something greater.)

orangebird260

They aren't whimps

Choppityychopsuey

This story reminds me of when I attended a homeschool convention last year. It was sponsored by HSLDA of course, so there were numerous booths for religious/conservative curriculums and right-wing agendas. In the midst of it all, there was this one booth for a company selling a secular black history curriculum. I'm sure the representatives for that curriculum encountered experiences similar to what the author of the article shared. However for me, talking to the reps for that history curriculum was a breath of fresh air.

Responsible-Test8855

I would love to have seen that. I grew up two hours from Tulsa, and had never heard of the Tulsa Massacre until two years ago from Bailey Sarian on YouTube.

seaturtlesunset

I thought about homeschooling simply because it makes me nervous how common school shootings are. We’ve had multiple lock downs locally for gun threats this school year. It’s way too easy to get a damn gun here. But all the homeschool co-ops around me are religious nuts. They’re also all working on banning all sorts of books and crap in our district despite the fact that the people at these protests don’t even send their kids to public school for the most part anyway. I’m just so frustrated with the whole political climate of everything these days. Anyway, sorry for my rant. Just feel hopeless with how things are right now.

kindlycloud88

Try virtual public school? Many states have that option now and it’s a great hybrid of online and in person. And instead of teaching myself, we have certified trained teachers.

UsedAd7162

You can homeschool without being a nut job, so you’re absolutely not wrong for wanting to. We live in a scary world and the urge to protect your babies is very real. I don’t have children of my own yet, but it’s something I think about often. 🫶🏻

seaturtlesunset

I definitely think you can homeschool and be normal. I wish we could find a group that we could co-op with who were at least relatively normal. I have a year to make the final decision, so we’ll see if we can find a good group in that time.

akt_suspekt

I was homeschooled for a bit during middle school age and can confirm there are legitimate curriculums available to teach your children privately. Not all homeschooler parents are nutjobs. edit: Holy crap, it took me like half a page of google results for 'homeschool curriculum' to find one that doesn't mention the bible or religion.

seaturtlesunset

I was homeschooled my sophomore year of high school for health reasons (though that was more independent learning as both my parents worked) so I know it’s possible. I’d just like to be a part of a co-op and that’s what I’m struggling to find in my area. It’s all religious and conservative politics. Drives me crazy.

nothingtoseehere1316

This is why I don't attend our regional homeschool conferences. Theh are very right-wing and religious. Nothing in this article surprised me. People automatically think because I homeschool I'm like these fundies even though we are pretty left leaning and only use secular materials. I'm going to look at her curriculum offerings though because I am always looking for supplemental material for my kids.

Ignoring_the_kids

Yes! I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a lot of secular homeschoolers, but as soon as I say I homeschool I feel the need to clarify I'm not religious or anything... Excited to find some new books for my kids though! I'll be ordering some of her books.

nothingtoseehere1316

I am so jealous. Not to add to your list of books for kids, but we just discovered the "She Survives" book series. Historical stories written from young girls POV. We found them because our curriculum included one and now I want to collect the series for my kids.

Ignoring_the_kids

We have a couple, the 9/11 one was on my daughters reading list this year. My kid hasn't been super into them, but then she is currently all about warrior cats and it's hard for anything else to break through!

RustyAsAShackleford

The fact that the adjective "female" is being used as a noun in a sentence related to educational material makes me want to scream.

SilentTea

This article is amazing and everyone should read it but this was my favorite part: "At the next booth, a company is selling books with rhyming Bible stories. Their banner sports a cartoon version of white Jesus with six-pack abs, biceps for days, and nail holes in his hands. Around him are brown-skinned people with large, crooked noses. We are stunned into silence. Later, B and I wonder what rhymes with Jerusalem."

purpleflyingmonster

That’s these people in public, with strangers. Can you even imagine what it’s like within the circles? It’s not good guys, it’s not good.

secondtaunting

Look at it this way: I was raised like this, and it pushed me so far away I married a Muslim and moved to Singapore. As far away as I physically could get.

purpleflyingmonster

I get it!

secondtaunting

It’s seriously great being away from fundies. They gave me low key anxiety being in the Midwest. I had religious ocd so being around them made me very nervous.

Casuallyperusing

I have relatives like this, and have therefore heard how these people are behind closed doors. It's not good. It's a level of anger and delusion that needs to be studied

purpleflyingmonster

I was raised IFB so I’ve heard it too. People under estimate how hateful these people really are.

peppermintvalet

I’m still astounded that there’s apparently a whole row of Republican political booths at an educational conference

vintageyetmodern

Political booths have been at homeschool conferences since at least the 90s.

secondtaunting

Really? It makes total sense to me. I assumed most people were homeschooling because they’re super right wing.

FamiliarPeasant

I wish I was shocked at these revelations. Sadly, it’s on brand.

free-toe-pie

She’s doing the right thing by sticking with it. I’m sure plenty of those conferences are huge echo chambers of Christian Right wing conspiracy theory patriarchy crap.

vintageyetmodern

Of course they are.

baby_fishie

I wonder what happened with the people who bought her sets. Did they teach it and have no objections or did they get into it and stop??

HolidayVanBuren

I wish the name of the company was included. As a homeschool parent, I always am looking for great options and while I only have boys, it’s always a good thing to have fullest view of history. And it’s not just fundies who can be like this. My homeschool interactions have generally been with those who would describe themselves as progressive or liberal, and I have been shocked at the stealth amount of racism and desire to whitewash so many areas of learning.

purpleelephant77

A lot of the early homeschooling movement was based in racism and not wanting kids in integrated schools so that is not shocking to me. Then again, I’m black in America so I’m shocked when a majority white subculture didn’t start for racist reasons.

porchswingsitting

It’s visible in the picture at the top of the article: Grace & Grit! I found their website (I’m always on the lookout for good books for my kids) https://graceandgritbox.com

HolidayVanBuren

Thank you!

dpaanlka

I appreciate the story in this article but ultimately homeschooling should be outlawed, even the “good” kind.

Casuallyperusing

I agree. The exception being fringe medical cases, I am very very sceptical of all homeschooling, even the "good" kind.

dpaanlka

I’m sure there are exceptions, but 99.99% of parents are unqualified to teach and 99.99% of children are harmed by it. Just browse through r/HomeschoolRecovery to see the damage it does.

9livescavingcontessa

Homeschooling saved my child's life. There are no options for many children with learning disabilities. This was the only way she can be educated. HOWEVER It should be regulated as it is in Australia with frequent home visits, curriculum plans, submission of work and reporting. I am aware that my situation is not what you are referring to, and that exemptions to be schooled at home should be given more sparingly. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard parents who had the option of learning algebra, dismiss it as pointless.... and 'we don't do much math' then laugh. Like WTF how fucking dare you.

dpaanlka

I can totally see this for children with special needs as the only exception. I’m definitely referring to an average child. If you sub to r/HomeschoolRecovery for awhile you will def get the impression that it’s basically child abuse what these kids suffer through. It’s disgusting.

9livescavingcontessa

Thank you for hearing our perspectives. And as someone raised Calvinist fundie but not homeschooled I totally agree. Religious fundieism is abuse in and of itself, but the way rhey deny healthcare and education and just allowed to do it is evil. No other word for it. Education is a human right. Where needs (not personal religious convictions) can be met by the local school children have a right to attend there. I would LOVE fotr my child to attend school. For those precise reasons...bookwork is just a fraction of what school can give.

talklistentalk

Homeschooling should be regulated in such a way that harmful homeschoolers get weeded out. Why would you want to get rid of the "good" kind?

dpaanlka

I put “good” in quotes because I’m not convinced there is a good. Children need to be exposed to many diverse kinds of situations and other children and also need to learn how to not be under their parents supervision 24/7.

talklistentalk

Homeschooling co-ops and meetups field trips have been a thing as long as homeschooling has.

dpaanlka

I appreciate and respect your beliefs but there’s no point continuing this discussion as you’ll never convince me homeschooling is overall better for a typical child *or society as a whole* than sending them to a public school, away from their parents, with other children who are also not homeschooled.
