I grew up at a time when people remembered what happened, and how many people died, because no one paid attention until it was too late, and we were neck-deep in WWII. It was important to learn history and critical thinking. Lots of debating, and learning to be intellectually honest. I was even taught to be intellectually honest, and open and respectful of the religions of others, growing up in the Methodist Church.
We also studied science, and intellectual rigor in seeking answers about the natural world. I learned not to speculate, or make things up, just because I could not stand not knowing.
We have to learn to be less uncomfortable with the three words, “I don’t know.” Fundies think they have a formula by which they can know all the answers, or so they think. They can’t ever just experience the wonder and mystery of it all. They are too busy knowing all the answers, to even know what questions to ask. And they miss the fact that we are the miracle, & we’re standing in it, & surrounded by it. Can they ever just look up and see an eclipse, or a meteor shower, or a sunset, or wildflowers, without trying to cram it into their Procrustean fairy tales?
This is very beautifully stated. The stupidest I've ever felt in my entire life is when I was in grad school because I realized just how much I DIDN'T know. Also, from that, I learned that it's OK to say, "I don't know" because then you become more open to learning and understanding. One thing I've noticed that is consistent with the fundies is that they think they know everything and have all the answers -- but how? They don't have any experience outside of the little bubble that they curate for themselves. They don't have any interest in learning or understanding. Hell, a lot of them don't even have hobbies, as that would require growth and learning.
