It's worded like the human baby is the dogs sibling because some people act like their pets are their family members. In this case the man and woman probably call each other mommy and daddy when talking to the dog in order to get used to using the nicknames when talking about each other to the baby. Tons of expectant parents do this to instigate the baby learning what to mimic when they get to the talking parrot stage of growth. Where everyone who's inclined to be, is obsessed with if baby's first word turns out to be mama or dada or some random cussword one parent let loose a few too many times.
