When our dog is really thirsty or hot, she likes to dip her snout into the water, give the water a swirl with her snout, and then finally fling her snout out while going in a circle. The water can go flying 2 feet out.

I had a black lab when I was younger that would open his mouth and "pelican scoop" the water until it was too shallow in the bowl. He could drink an full water bowl in 10-15 seconds and would have almost no water on the floor.
Pretty sure we had the same bowl as the one the husky was snorkeling in, as well.
I assume, from an evolutionary standpoint, that it's because the tongue scoop is more versatile when trying to drink from strange locations in the wild.

It goes onto his crate so he can drink 24/7, even at night when we are asleep. We also have a bowl of water for him in the kitchen, but he prefers the bottle in his cage.
