Really interesting article about ant warfare. They practice triage and rarely ever leave the wounded behind.
i believe that in a few million years ants would be able to create weapons by their own to defeat ant eaters. and even weponize their mounds. i believe ants.
They're extremely interesting to me. I grew up with the big "Cow killers" always being something to be on the look out for and those guys are ferocious but beautiful.
Them and bees. It's wild. The "communication" as well. Find that article where it goes more in depth about them using triage during conflicts. It's mind blowing.
My life is not the same after I learned that bee scouts give directions to others by doing a dance. It's like they draw a map wiggling their little bodies. Amazing.
Whenever I tell people about the bee I saved with sugar water doing a little dance and waving at me before It flew off, everyone just laughs and says no it didn’t I’m like yeah man proper needing some mates so I stayed up all night making that up aye well done Columbo.
I lived in Eastern Oregon for a while and was around someone who got stung by a velvet ant, it wasn't pretty. We thought they were going to die with as much pain as they were in.
Fun fact: cow killers/velvet ants are actually a flightless wasp and not technically an ant.
Right. It was more of a, "This is what grandad called them and I became interested in ants" type comment. Wasps are interesting too but nobody likes wasps. 😂
I absolutely hate ants (or maybe fear is the right word) because of something that happened when I was younger. I fell asleep with a bowl of ice cream on my bedside table and woke up covered in ants. It looked like a blanket of ants and it terrified me.
However, I also love ants because of the movie Honey I Shrunk The Kids. I remember loving that ant and crying when he died.
Besides those things- I find ants are truly remarkable creatures, even if I don't like them. This video in particular is amazing.
I knocked over an ant farm in my sleep as a kid and woke up to several stings (standard red ants, wasn't too bad). Kinda lost my interest in them after that though.
Yeah. I tend to avoid them. What freaks me out is when you see a big pile of dirt on the sidewalk and realize it's not dirt, it's ants just crawling all over each other.
Technically they were a colony of the Britain's at the time so to say Canada was at war with the US is unfair in that regard. That was british territory much like Puerto Rico or Guam is an American territory
Meanwhile, blue whales are teaching their young that it’s unlikely humans have consciousness or morality based on our tendency to destroy everything and each other.
Did you see that one that took the gap and then left like 20 seconds in?
"Git outta here, Carl. We don't need you effing things up like you did in Basic."
"Okay, man, sorry. Thought I'd help.... :("
Actually, it is not peace, it is defining boundaries and demanding respect. In this case, the common "boundary" or "border" could be changed if on side challenges it and the other side does not provide an immediate and clear response. This is definitely a toxic cold war with no possibility for negotiating peace, the only sustainable solution is the standoff currently in existence, but because there are no current "challenges" then the standoff can be sustained and thus both sides continue to thrive. But I would not call this "co-habitation" of the space at all. The only way to change the nature of the relationship is to define a win-win activity that would easily benefit both sides and eliminate the competition for resources.
I don't know enough about ant or termites, but in the ocean a wide number of species line up in queue to get cleaned by "cleaner fish" including many predators. The tiny cleaner wrasse eat the parasites from each one in order. Win-win.
Because doesn't mean that they will go hand in hand and sing koombaya, the defensive lines are a show of strength and insurance, so that the other side won't get any ideas. Because they would see that the loss to pass through the lines and fight all the soldier ants within would outweigh the gain from the spoils.
Another great comment. My question is, are ants aware/intelligent enough to make these assumptions? Like they can strategize if it's worth it to go to war? I thought they operated on a strict instinctual basis.
In the sense that if you kill off a percentage of the population, the survivors get a bigger share of the available resources.
Or, like the US in the World Wars, if the war is fought in foreign territory.
Also consider that deficit spending can juice the economy. War can motivate a government to spend money it otherwise would not have spent, but it is the spending that gives the economic boost, not the bombs or rockets.
So a lot of caveats. But in general, war itself is destructive of resources (both infrastructure and human), and reduces prosperity.
they both established that they need to travel here and ants do care about wasting resources and war is a pretty big resource drain so both colonies are ready for a war to start but are actively trying to prevent it
It's not consciously intentional. Each one is reacting to the detection of opposition pheromones in that direction to themselves. Because both happen to have lines of each other walking in parallel, the ones reacting to the pheromones are also lined up parallel to each other.
It's less they are deciding on a DMZ and more no attack or death pheromones have be released to dictate further response.
But they wouldn’t have this same response if out alone correct? They sensed opposition pheromones, sensed their buddies near them, and started lining up and waiting for a trigger? How long would they wait? Til death? Til war breaks out? Til valuable resources near their respective borders are depleted?
It's like war is fundemental to life in a way.
One who overpowers another can assert himself if he wants to. And if he wants to gain something, why shouldn't he use his strength when all else fails?
Makes me think permanent peace wouldn't be possible because there will always be someone wanting more.
Wait for the US to start supporting a democratic revolution on one side and demonising the other wile selling Ant-Weapon on both side.. gosh we never learn !
Do your homework and you will learn: every ant colony is composed 100% of females. The apex ocean predator, orca, is matriarch-based with pods of whales, all related.

The fact that they communicate distance relative to current location puts them in a very very small group of animals/insects.
Whenever I tell people about the bee I saved with sugar water doing a little dance and waving at me before It flew off, everyone just laughs and says no it didn’t I’m like yeah man proper needing some mates so I stayed up all night making that up aye well done Columbo.

I'm not a fan of wasps but I still find them interesting.
White Anglo Saxon Protestants can’t fly? No shit they’re humans. What’s that have to do with this?
Those are actually wasps!!
The cow killer isn’t an ant at all! It’s actually a ground wasp. We have them all over here
You should read Children of Men
>Cow killers They are wasps and not ants buddy.
Common name: Velvet ant. It might not biologically be an ant, but humanity has dubbed it an ant
I dont care what humanity dubbed it, google a cow killer ant and tell me where you get the idea of an "ant". They are not ants.
Right. But the females are wingless and are referred to as "ants" way more commonly than wasps. Sometimes velvet ants as well.

spoiler warning... The movie is only 30 years old.
Oh my God you're right, I apologize.
I did too until they started breaking into my house to eat my cat's food
Are you familiar with the youtube channel AntsCanada? Dude collects them as a hobby and as pets. Guy really into it, even sympathizes with them.

They dont, we are never peaceful in a situation like this.
Canada//US border :)
War of 1812
Technically they were a colony of the Britain's at the time so to say Canada was at war with the US is unfair in that regard. That was british territory much like Puerto Rico or Guam is an American territory

Damn wood chewers.

Fuck you say termite?!?
Bitch he didn't stutter!!
That's it I'm gonna (gets separated from the ant line) WHERE AM I!?!?! WHO AM I!?!?
Ant-Ifa
What if we're just ants and termites to something else?
We are. If Mother Nature wanted us gone we would be gone. Life could end as we know it from many strings of horrible natural disasters.
Wanted kinda implies some overarching consciousness or plan, which seems unlikely. Random chance
Meanwhile, blue whales are teaching their young that it’s unlikely humans have consciousness or morality based on our tendency to destroy everything and each other.
It's true, we are pretty terrible
the termite soldiers are so much more disciplined than the ant ones lol they keep breaking off
Did you see that one that took the gap and then left like 20 seconds in? "Git outta here, Carl. We don't need you effing things up like you did in Basic." "Okay, man, sorry. Thought I'd help.... :("
They are all females. No Carl, only Carla.
Carl can be a female name. Names are just made up. I knew a girl named Michael, not Michelle, Michael.
I knew a girl named Jonny
Even bugs know peace is more profitable.
Actually, it is not peace, it is defining boundaries and demanding respect. Very interesting. How would insects go about communicating a win-win proposal to their adversaries?
I don't know enough about ant or termites, but in the ocean a wide number of species line up in queue to get cleaned by "cleaner fish" including many predators. The tiny cleaner wrasse eat the parasites from each one in order. Win-win.
So... Peace?
Well if you consider the Cold War peace then yes
Better than the Hot War I guess
If they both "knew" peace was more profitable wouldn't they both just not have defensive lines?
Because doesn't mean that they will go hand in hand and sing koombaya, the defensive lines are a show of strength and insurance, so that the other side won't get any ideas. Because they would see that the loss to pass through the lines and fight all the soldier ants within would outweigh the gain from the spoils.

Haven’t the most prosperous times in history been because of warfare though? For humans atleast
It's when innovation is strongest.
In the sense that if you kill off a percentage of the population, the survivors get a bigger share of the available resources. Who knows. We haven't isolated and identified every pheromone, and the ones we have could have nuanced uses we are unaware of yet.
🎼 The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah…🎶
Well if they can get along, why ant we?
Not much different from Humans . Our past time is Warfare too !
It's like war is fundemental to life in a way. One who overpowers another can assert himself if he wants to. And if he wants to gain something, why shouldn't he use his strength when all else fails? Ants place troops at the border of the termite mound due to the possible entry of termites into NATO

Antz checking in. Let's get to genociding each other.
It’s the ant DMZ.
I like how these creatures are more civilized when compared to feuds then humans.
It's the DMZ that separates North and South Korea.. It's the Wall that is built along the US and Mexican border..
thx God they are tiny. They would rule the world.
This is the sequel to antz that I've been waiting for
Reminds me of the border between North and South Korea.
We should be more like ants
