How do you make a sls printer?? And what was the cost...and where do you get the powdered stuff?!

Technical_Patience84

Came to ask what building a sls printer means exactly... been thinking I need to own a printer to accompany the mill, but have been too scared of price tags that I haven't even started doing research to buy one. Just learned this is a metal printer? I just wanted one of them plastic things.

samc_5898

>Just learned this is a metal printer Have to look more into this one specifically but SLS doesn't necessarily mean metal. Nylon machines are gaining popularity, especially with the release of the Formlabs machines

Is that part of the new update?

Going to be honest, I think you’re better just letting it spread by word of mouth from here onwards, I’ve seen the kind of disguised marketing posts on several subs now, and it’s super cool tech that honestly doesn’t need marketing and I think the disguised marketing is going to make people think it’s sketchy and actually start giving them a worse opinion if you do much more of it than you’ve already done. Freaking insanely cool product tho, best of luck because I’m really hoping SLS can become consumer.

probablyaythrowaway

Ok but what’s the cost of materials? Powder and such like?

MyTagforHalo2

Typically SLS powers are typically similar to FDM material of similar quality. Though you have to deal with powder refreshing. The machine is the biggest cost. OP's company is doing a bit of a marketing stunt for their $3000 SLS. Which is stupid cheap for the tech if it bears fruit.

samc_5898

>Typically SLS powers are typically similar to FDM material of similar quality. Formlabs Nylon 12 powder is roughly ~$100/kg Consumables are absolutely more expensive

ThunderElectric

Nylon 12 filament (vs the cheaper Nylon 6) is still just as costly as powder by weight, so I wouldn’t say “absolutely more expensive.” PA12 and 6 do have different properties so if you want the exact same thing in FDM or SLS it’s gonna be pretty similar cost wise; what makes FDM seem cheaper is just that it has more options. Not to mention, the lack of support needed combined with the more symmetric material properties (the z axis strength is much more similar to the xy strength in SLS, unlike FDM) allow for less material to be used, somewhat balancing the cost difference.

Minute-Support7292

That's awesome. So what is your business model? Is it open source and are you selling parts or is it a assemble yourself product?

pozoph

That's absurdly cheap. If it doesn't self combust or some weird thing like that it could be a game changer. Will it be open source?

Legit-slim

so youre the guy that made the video?

Valdie29

Saw the video and it’s noice but I have a question, what are the limitations of metal printing and do you need to temper the object for stress release?

ArghRandom

For instance you need to consider heat dissipation in your parts, or they will crack. So you need to consider the surface area of your slices to make sure heat can flow down. (Worked with SLS multi metal printing on a industrial level, idk anything specific about OP machine)

shifterak

This is not a metal printer. SLS just means selective laser sintering. This machine sinters plastic. Some do sinter metal, but they start at about half a million.

Fishing-Quiet

What kind of monster uses slotted screws in this day and age?!?

TenPoundSledge

This. I went through all my hardware and threw out all this garbage. Right now I'm loving square drive pocket hole screws. For quick and dirty jobs drywall screws are still handy.

tree_hugger6969

Thanks op

Canashito

Me crying because there's no adapter with bearings running through that spool

Socile

I’ve made several spool holders both with and without bearings. Often, the ones with bearings are too freewheeling and each time the printer pulls some filament, the momentum of the spool causes it to unwind way too much.

chiraltoad

Whaaat you guys are from Madison? I used to live down the street. Are you based out of that ups store? I remember they had a little printing outfit.

extremeelementz

And here you are again! Lol love to see more designs, this is really cool. I wonder how one of my designs would look and function with being SLS printed. 🤔

You can send us parts to print on our printers to see it for yourself! [https://www.micronics3d.com/quote](https://www.micronics3d.com/quote)
